Bolts under high stress and vibration should be stretched beyond the load they would ever expect to see. They should never be allowed to stretch and rebound under use because they will stress fracture. This is why there is a torque spec. Also there should be at least 2 threads showing past the nut. Yours was flush indicating something was wrong. Rod bolts and aircraft wing bolts are good examples. Great fix.

Check with Eric O., but 2 lane roads have a lot of "crown" (higher in the center) to promote water run off. Some perfectly aligned vehicles will need so left bias to compensate for this. If you adjust the toe for this you will increase wear and then the vehicle will want to drift left on truly flat road (interstates). You can get that left bias by adjusting the caster angles. Caster angle has no affect on tire wear.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
Great tip. Interstates have crown too!

Steady even pulling on the torch wrench jurking or quick snapping makes the wrench give fails readings it pops to tell you your there at. Spec's jurking make it sound off at the rong time and your torch spec's will be off. But good work finding the problem and giving good explanation. Good work also not making your friend look small. The bad news was the wheel lug nuts never got tightened correctly the last time the wheels were off. There were too many of them loose to blame it on other things. Good news is no damage happened. That oil looked to be both engine and trans fluid since there was "red" and "dark" oil. Brandon, don't park in anyone's driveway until the leaks get fixed...just say'n. Enjoy your trip.

Brandon probably made the simple mistake of grabbing the in-lb torque wrench rather than the ft-lb one. LOLs. :) The oil / tranny leak should help keep the rust down. I swear cars rust out faster now because the engines don't leak nearly as much. Bring back the rope and leather oil seals!

Nice video, Ivan, these kind of experiences make us all wiser. I've seen loose lug nuts once before, it's a wake up call that there are risks on both sides of the equation. In the ball joint, I wonder if final torquing might be better done with wheels on the ground, to firmly seat the new joint in its sleeve with the weight of the frame compressing the joint....
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
Actually with the MacPherson suspension design, the only "load" on the joint is sideways, and a bit from the swaybar. Otherwise all the weight is on the actual strut through the steering knuckle :)

I suggest he check that ball joint again at the end of his trip. If it's loose again, the taper is damaged and you'll need to do the knuckle again and the ball joint. That's a pretty classic taper joint failure. The JY knuckle might have had a loose ball joint at some point in its life that slightly changed the angle of the taper. Even that one being loose for a bit probably killed the machining in that taper. They never stay tight after that.
@cojones85187 жыл бұрын
There is a taper reamer that can true up knuckles with slight damage, but if it's to bad the taper goes to far and you have to replace the knuckle. xkut-reamers.com/

@stinkycheese8046 жыл бұрын
Rodney you couldn't be more backwards. Using an air impact rench to pretend you're getting the right torque is wrong. The goal is not to tighten something as tight as possible which can damage studs, nuts, and make them impossible to get off later, especially after some corrosion.

Another great video Ivan and you done well, to get your friend back on the road in a short time. The ball joint taper may still be a bit loose in the knuckle, due to worn taper or the knuckle hole enlarged? At 21.06, it looks like the knuckle is moving more than nut, in your rocking test, when they should move the same amount, if the taper is fully locked to the knuckle.

Yeah, "holy shit" sums this one up Ivan! He's lucky for sure. Thanks!

I would say ball joint was not fully seated in taper when fitted, few flakes of rust or grit would be enough . Hope you covered that under your guarantee lol . Loose wheel nuts a shocker, can loose a wheel real quick or wallow wheels holes and damage studs/nuts in couple miles . Torque um right - good n tight ...
@charlese.malone25947 жыл бұрын
Morning Ivan, I'm sure the wheel lugs could be explained away but the Ball joint is a bit odd. I've only seen it once before but I personally caught it where it was hung up during install and was not fully seated into the tapper. For the joint connection to open up like that after a bit of time or miles on the clock is odd and would concern me. Did you try tightening the joint up and torque to spec and then loosen/remove the bolt? If the joint popped out after loosening the nut then I would say the Tapper in the knuckle is worn out and the joint is only being held in via the nut. The lower engine bay is going to need a wash for the leak source to be found. Looks like there are two both Trans & Oil. After the Vehicle was pulled out in the video. I could see both Oil and trans fluid. Hope your friend had a safe ride home. Take care Ivan.

Charles E. Malone Charles I totally agree. I have never seen play with the split pin in place unless the ball joint had failed. It should have been removed and inspected. You know there is a problem. John
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
My theory is that when we installed the junkyard knuckle 4 years ago, the taper had some surface rust on it from sitting who knows where without the stud in place. We torqued it properly, but then the rust got worn away to bare metal, and BOOM, stud is now loose again!
@aussiebloke6097 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with Charles and sportshatch. The last time I saw a ball joint come loose without disturbing the split pin, it was the plastic socket that holds the ball turning to dust. The rust scenario Ivan suggested is a possibility, but that was very loose...I can't imagine he wouldn't notice that much rust when doing the installation.
@charlese.malone25947 жыл бұрын
Just got back home from another long day at work, Had to cut my Vacation time this week to get ready for our audit but get to carry over, even more, this year. :) As I said in my first post, I've seen this happen before only once but during an install and was able to catch it. If you look at the video again guys as I did, You can see the difference between the threaded shank of the Ball joint loose side vs the driver side. Where the Castle nut ends and the thread count to the end of the threaded shank of the ball joint. It was not seated fully, I'm sure if the Tapper didn't seat (After tightening and a torque) the ball would just turn in place and the weakest link as we know is always the ball end. The Castle nut and that shank can hold a lot of tension, its meant to draw the tapper together. Could have been Rust, or a Burr. That was the issue I saw once. Not sure how much damage could have been incurred during the trip if anything noticeable If it were to happen again, you'll need to whip out some Permatex 80038 Persian blue and check the Tapper fit on both. The Tapper might even be a bit warp in the knuckle. Or... Ivan, I would keep an eye on your buddy Brandin. Wifey might be wanting to take him out. Lol :) Let this be a lesson to all of us, Always take notice of how your ball joint seats and take good care of your better half. She might not know how to work on a vehicle but it could come in to favor. :P

You could probably do an entire video on the foibles of depending on factory torque settings in relation to vehicles that are exposed to road salt and how the resulting corrosion will screw with a torque wrench reading. There's a reason most North Eastern auto-techs rely more on feeling than settings. Thus the "ugga-dugga" torque technique.
@andrewthompsonuk17 жыл бұрын
Had that problem with a ball joint. It would loosen after a few months. When I replaced the ball joint I found out that the rubbish aftermarket joint actually had the wrong angle on the taper. The hole it goes into was fine with the taper on the top quality new joint locking nicely.

At the same time you will get an idea of how the rear axle is tracking from the front.

@arielatom036 жыл бұрын
Stinky Cheese not every trip, but i bet nobody had been under that vehicle in years
@stinkycheese8046 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't have mattered. Remember, it was fine before the trip started. All that was needed is pull the heck over when something wrong is detected. There isn't even much you need to inspect under a vehicle until it is time for a long trip. If you're losing brake fluid you should see a puddle or have spongy brakes and low fluid gauge warning. Tire condition you can see without crawling under. Exhaust you would hear. O2 sensors you'd get an OBDII code. Any fluid leaks of significance you'd notice low fluid except differential. I guess in this case yes, do check to see if your differntial is leaking every so often but you'd tend to have a puddle where you parked. Otherwise, no I wouldn't get under a vehicle to check there for 1-2 day road trips. I'd check resting battery voltage, check oil level and give it an oil and filter change, check other fluids, check belt(s) and hoses, wiper blades, tires... nothing that needs crawling under the vehicle. Think about it, how many times does one crawl under a vehicle onlyl to find nothing, then once a wheel gets loose or a ball joint bad, it's still the same thing you should do either way, pull over right away and THEN see what's causing the problem. I suppose part of my point is that if you have a vehicle in good running order you don't have to keep inspecting things that give you a little warning to pull over for.

I have had lugs come loose after what I thought was hammering them on with the impact. Happened once, and ever since then, I use my torque wrench on ALL lug nuts. Just for my own peace of mind. Takes a bit longer, but time well spent IMO. I do 100 ft. lbs. on most cars, except for my 940 (it's really low spec on that - like 65), and anything else with tiny wheel studs. My '07 Silverado (GMT900) gets 140 ft.lbs., and older trucks get 120. One tons I do 150. I have a Dorman chart, lol. Haven't had a lug problem since. I don't trust my impact. No. That shouldn't damage the rotor or pads, "maybe" the bearing and likely the studs if driven that way long enough.

Is it some american thing - 4wd and summer tires in winter? xD
@jimzivny15547 жыл бұрын
MrBorntoroll The tire manufacturers here use the term "All Season" too loosely. On all the cars in my family I have extra sets of wheels with Bridgestone Blizzak tires for winter use and good quality tires for the rest of the year. I love the Blizzak tires and they make a big difference over the "all season" tires. I'd rather spend a few dollars and take the time to swap the tires to help keep us all safe. Very cheap insurance. On the two Tahoes my son and I drive they have good All Terrain tires (Toyo & Firestone) and they handle the bad weather without being too noisey on the highway. I think people who aren't car guys or mechanics here have gotten complacent believing the tire advertising and the auto manufacturers don't want to miss a sale by telling the truth that most of the all wheel drive suv's aren't all wheel drive. They are controlled electronically to direct power to the wheels it thinks need it. I know I rambled on a bit but I hope this helps.

Tires are expensive. If you want winter tires for that prob $600-800, plus you have to swap them over 2 times per year at a cost of $60-80 per time or buy another set of wheels.
@stinkycheese8046 жыл бұрын
Intelligent people only buy winter snow tires if they need them. Granted some idiots don't buy snow tires when they need them, but if you were observant you would have seen that the roads were fine, so you may be one of the idiots for your comment about summer tires when clearly the all season tires on the vehicle were appropriate for the conditions.

OEMs tell you to re-torque alloy wheels 500 miles after installation. They know these relax after the initial tightening.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
So why not just over-torque them a bit from the get-go? No one has time to re-torque their wheels lol ;)
@Mtechthewise7 жыл бұрын
The CYA statement in the owners manual helps with avoiding liability after services performed and customer doesn't come back for the re-torque...and you being a good mechanic would never over tighten a critical fastener right? :o)
@jimzivny15547 жыл бұрын
I have a few thoughts to add. You reused cotter pins!!! Huge mistake. Also after the ball joint stud has been flopping around in the spindle for unknown amount of miles you really should have checked if the tapered stud and hole were damaged, if they don't mate properly they will loosen again. You mentioned the trans needed 1quart but on screen two quarts, trans fluid doesn't evaporate, it went somewhere. Lastly I would determine which torque wrench was used to tighten the ball joints and lug nuts and throw it out or braze the adjuster solid and use it only as a long ratchet. Buy a quality torque wrench and get it recalibrated periodically. A bad torque wrench can wreck an engine or kill someone. Just my thoughts after 40+ years in the business.
@Tedybear3157 жыл бұрын
He checked the trans fluid with the engine/trans cold for the first quart. Clearly he learned from his own vehicle and checked again once back from the road test for a final top off. All shops in my area require lug nuts to get re-torqued after 50 miles for this reason. All to easy for the "Mag" wheels to give a false torque reading for the first initial torque, the 2nd usually brings it into spec. I would suspect in this case however- The shop that did the tire rotation just zipped things with the impact gun and didn't get enough "Ugga Duggas" on it (To borrow Eric O's term). Now THAT problem I have seen all to often! Either to loose...to darn tight... Seldom does an impact gun get torque 100% for a lug nut. Even with torque sticks? Always follow up with a real torque wrench.

He used a weak-sauce 3/8" torque wrench dialed to the upper limit. Definitely NOT the right tool for this job!
@jimzivny15547 жыл бұрын
Tedybear315 Re-ch is something a lot of guys and shops skip cause it's time consuming. Yes, it should be mandatory, a steel wheel will probably be ok if torqued properly but aluminum and mystery metal wheels can flex, also if the wheels are hot or cold can act differently.
@jimzivny15547 жыл бұрын
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics That's a recipe for failure, 3/8" torque wrench has its place but not on those fasteners. Good point

James Zivny i can't believe he didn't do a quick front end check since the vehicle was in the garage before the test drive. I would of got fired if something like that happened and the wheel came off during test drive

I owned a car where if you didn't religiously clean all rust off the rotor and wheel the lug nuts would loosen. On a forum for this vehicle I found it was a universal problem. I now own a later model - same Japanese brand, and the problem is gone. A better method for toe is a trammel bar. You'll see these used at race tracks. Ssimple to make with three pieces of junk lumber.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
What brand?
@lorrinbarth19697 жыл бұрын
I owned a 1992 Mitsubishi DSM. The rotors would also rust and become VERY difficult to remove. The stock rotors on my 2003 Evolution (I'm still running the originals) don't stick at all and people with this second car don't encounter loose wheels.
@stinkycheese8046 жыл бұрын
Improper technique. At the first sign they were rusting up too much they should have had some thick silicone grease put on to prevent that, thick meaning viscosity, not a thick layer and obviously not on the braking surface.

Yes we should never reuse cotter pin but I’ve never seen or heard of anything fail because of a reused cotter pin.

@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
Jerking torque wrenches is one of my favorite hobbies xD But good point on the cotter pins. I wouldn't reuse one if the legs were snapping off from fatigue, but the ones in this vid were super solid, so it wasn't a safety issue or anything.
@stinkycheese8046 жыл бұрын
Meh, you can usually tell if the pin has enough metal left (minus corrosion) and whether it's too fatigued or not. If we want to talk about what's safest, the ball joint should have been pulled out of the knuckle, the knuckle hole examined, and the ball joint examined. Plus for the low cost of a ball joint and that the local auto parts store probably stocks them, I'd have gone ahead and replaced it while it was taken apart that far.
@cccdetective7877 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivan Your torque wrench procedures make me cringe every time I see you JOUNCE the wrench!!! I would guess that your wrench is no where near accurate any more. Steady pressure my friend or you might as well use a breaker bar. Also tell your friend to wath that ball joint for further loosening as sometimes prior to full failure a ball joint starts pounding insde the joint creating a loose fit. Have a happy New Year and keep the videos coming in 2018. It looks like your starting to need a bigger shop???

Only on base model vehicles, which tend not to have 4wd for one thing. Whether the lug nuts need to be flat or tapered depends on the wheel design. There are aluminum wheels that take both types.

Ivan it's not about us viewers it's the law be safe you was driving a vehicle with 4 loose wheels and ball joints that were loose. That's why you wear your seat belt so you don't get thrown out on the road. I live your videos keep up the good work.
