Big ups to Ken & Bill. They are old, slow but they have many years of sage advice...
@TheSuburban155 жыл бұрын
Sage Dynamics posted a 20,000 round RMR video yesterday. I won't say that the tiny optics are as reliable as iron sights, but they're getting real close. When Aimpoint removes heads from rectal cavities, and increases battery life of the ACRO, then they'll be a contender too. It would probably help if pistols were made for optical sights, rather than adapted as an afterthought. A reciprocating slide is not an ideal mounting point for optics.
@DavidLLambertmobile5 жыл бұрын
I'd add too the Aimpoint ARCO 1 is $600+ 😬. Its not like 90% of the US gun buying public or even sworn LE agency buyers would spend that $ on rear sights. My city's PD(900+ sworn 👮🏻♂️) got brand new 9mm SIG P226R sidearms in 2009 by going & saying: we need new pistols but we will buy new SIGs so we can save $ on duty gear, training, ammunition, etc. The city council approved it 📑💲🏛. They still issue, use SIG classic models; 2019.

Because of where the optical site needs to be located for it to be useful, there's not much choice but to mount it on the reciprocating slide. Semi-automatic pistols would need a major redesign for that not to be the case.

My CC pistol does have an optic and I feel the positives out way the negatives . My sights are visible through the red dot and the batteries last a long time for me. I’m use the holosun 507 which is dual powered. The RMR, Holosun, and Aimpoint are all durable and reliable. The industry needs to go the RMR pattern as the Leupolds are not. Yes near a big window but they are not that durable. I’m not a millennial but it is easy to see why striker fire polymer frame guns are so popular. They are simplistic, easy to repair, low maintenance, and to customize. I believe the polymer frames flex and reduce recoil some. For steel guns they have to be Heavy!!

My primary carry is Glock (19, 17, 43, 26, or 30). I enjoy the simplicity of Glock, plus the aftermarket support. However, I love and respect the 1911 platform. As for a vehicle gun, I prefer a dbl action with a safety, and a pocket gun in dbl action only with a 9-11lb trigger pull, so I actually cover the most popular type of gun to the least commercially popular. I'm the odd one in a way. My guns are tools, and I employ different tools for different jobs. I agree on the red dot thing. I don't have the best eyesight, but keeping both eyes open and keeping good point shoot techniques helps a lot with plain sights.

Great men and video. I love the 1911 design. The only negative thing about Wilson Combat is the price. They start at $2200 and top out at $6000 on a average. You have to be rich to own one. The middle class can't afford one of these guns. Like owning a Rolex. I own a budget 1911 between $500-$700 and works great! And I don't need fine tuning ($$$) to make it run proficient.

I agree with some of the things said here but not all. I recognize that with some, there is no brand loyalty but with many, there still is. Even with many of the younger generation of folks. I personally, love almost all firearms but when it comes to my conceal and carry firearms, Glock is my first choice followed just slightly behind by my Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0’s. With Glock, those are the firearms that the department that I work for uses. The G22. I have trained with them for 13 years and they are insanely reliable and durable. Many of our range Glocks have in excess of over 50k rounds put through them and everything on them is still the original components from what they came with from the factory. I absolutely love them! I’ve trained with them in every element and weather and have exposed the entire weapon to water, snow, ice, sand, dirt, mud and have trained in weather that is below 0, and as hot as 120 degrees. My personal Glocks have never malfunctioned in training and the Glocks at work, I have only observed malfunction on only a handful of cases in my 13 years. But in ever malfunction, it could have been ammo related. With many folks now days, information is almost instant and at the fingertips. Many younger folks research stuff before buying. It’s not always about getting what is the least expensive, otherwise, every millennial, Gen X, Gen Y, and Gen Z, would only buy Hi Point and Taurus then but they aren’t. I do agree that MOS’s, and laser and/or light rail attachments are probably the future of most handguns. Same with them being polymer frame, center fired as well. I know that with me personally, I do prefer them as well, over DA/SA hammer fired handguns or even just SA handguns, as well as revolvers. Don’t get me wrong, I love those firearms too but the polymer framed, center fired modern style of handguns offers a lot more advantages over the other types of handguns.

Mr. Heckathorn truthfully sir I agree with pretty much everything you said. I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1982 and of course I was there when the Beretta M9 was adopted and replace the Beloved m-19 A1. My MOS I had a choice of retaining a 1911 or being issued an M9. Throughout my career I enjoyed having this option. Largely out of tradition I retained my 1911 during the course of my service. Now as you stated with the adoption of the Sig Sauer P320 AKA m17 and the M18. I personally I am still befuddled bye Sig Sauer winning the competition. Yes it was largely about money. As the old saying goes Money Talks bulshit walks. The part that is funny to me and all this is that Glock 19s have been in the United States inventory for close to 20 years and already had an established a foothold within our military. My former MOS recently adopted the Glock 19 Gen 3 to replace the colt m45a1. In light of the current atmosphere on the battlefield or down range as we like to term it it was a smart move. And one last thing when the military went to Optics for there combat rifles. To me personally it was the end of Marksmanship proficiency. Iron sights to this old war horse will always be superior to Optics.

Racespec that’s not true, I have taken 5 Rock Island GI models, and re built them into fine service grade pistols, however that’s something I did for fun as I have long retired. Wilson already offers a complete line of G.I style “Factory Plus” parts. Basically building the equivelant of a Springfield Mil-Spec or Colt 1991. At a $650. Price point it would sell competitively against Colt, Springfield, Para Ordinance... it could be done, a Wilson Combat G.I. Service Grade. Use simple combat checkered wood grips, lanyard loop, etc.

@Racespec there is no reason it couldn't be. That seems more like marketing talk that has been out out there to make you buy a higher priced gun. With modern machining there is no reason a serviceable gun cannot be made at that price point. It won't have Wilson tolerances but it sure good enough for duty or defense.

Ken and Bill, MANY THANKS for this outstanding and very insightful video. I wonder if you’d answer a simple set of question regarding red dot sights for handguns. We all know the overwhelming majority of defensive handgun engagements occur at ten yards or less, often at approximately three yards. What’s the real advantage of a red dot under those circumstances? Furthermore, doesn’t reliance upon and acclimation to red dots create a potential vulnerability - the damn thing fails to work properly when the “chips are down” - that is far less probable with normal iron sights? I’m absolutely not anti-red dot, however (and I’m 73, with slowly deteriorating eyesight, and I’ve been shooting for over five decades) an accurate 30 foot shot is no marksmanship feat with traditional sights.

Wow... lots of respect for Ken, but the red dot he described... needing 10000 rd cycle life, 3 year batt life, etc. already does exist... it's called rmr...

Ken is talking about one that is integrated into the slide in the same way irons are - no screw tightening required.

I'm not an expert, but I believe these "grey area" guns (pistol with a brace, .410 pistols, shockwaves, straight rifling firearms) will cause firearm laws to change. Will the new laws be more permissive or more restrictive? That is the big question.

Polymer guns sell as well as they do based Inn"good marketing"... Not because they're the better choice. They're"compromised'... With a huge aftermarket making parts they can swap in for"better shootability.. When they face is they will never approach the shootability of a stock 1911.. Production guns even... No matter how much money is spent. If you could only have one Paul..1911

Ken, you weren’t all wrong about the glock I don’t own any plastic pistols. There seems to be the 40cal has run its course. Many used ones for sale lately. You weren’t far off.

I certainly respect Ken's opinion and think he really is a great part of the gun community and partially responsible for carrying on Cooper's torch of practical shooting and firearms training, but I disagree with him regarding red dots on self-defense handguns. For one, there already exist red dots (particularly the Trijicon RMR Type 2) that have long battery life, good durability, and maintain zero. Secondly, he did not mention the main benefit of said systems which is that it allows the shooter to maintain focus on target rather than the front sight. This is very beneficial as first of all it is natural instinct to focus on a threat in a dangerous situation and secondly it allows you to be more situationally aware of what your threat is doing. How many times do you hear law enforcement or civilians in defensive shootings say they didn't see their sights? Red dots could very well help that, in fact there was a study conducted from a training facility that did a lot of force on force training with sims and compiled the data on percentage of hits and critical hits with RMR equipped pistols vs ones with traditional irons. Let's just say there was a significant statistical advantage with the RMRs. Shooting moving targets? Forget it, red dots make it simple. None of this to say that you shouldn't run backup irons though, regardless if the dot is on a rifle or pistol. For a good summation of pros/cons of pistol mounted RDS one of the best videos is from John Lovell. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKW3ZZeaaJ5lras

I want a red dot optic on a handgun that is crystal clear like my ACOG rifle scope ... all red dots for pistols look blurry to me.
@sqwk25594 жыл бұрын
That’s irrelevant. You’re supposed to open both eyes when aiming.

Why is the RMR better than lasers. I don’t even need to have pistol near my face to land the shot, and it is immediately visible for all practical self defense distances.

With all respect Ken, the 9MM was invented in 1902 the 45 ACP was invented in 1904, i personally like the 45 alot more. The problem is the public follows the military, 9mm is so much less expensive than 45, training has become a very expensive proposition. When i first started shooting 45 was 5.00 a box of 50. On the other side of this is , i would take a 45 into battle before any 9MM. Thank you for your video!!

Great-thoughtful videos guys. One thing that I think you are going to have to prepare for is the shifting left when it comes to gun rights. I am in the middle politically, but I am noticing a lot of my left friends expanding their minds about gun ownership. Right now we are seeing the difference in how people that are presumed to be defenseless are treated vs. how people that are presumed to be ready to defend are treated. Additionally, we are all aware of how divided the country is right now. That historic spike in gun sales is the left finally using their rights.. and it's good for all. They should be embraced.. Gun culture has pushed the idea that an armed society is a safe society... The left is at the table...

@@markcurry3083 I tried a sig 365 xl brand new about 6 months after that post Mark and had problems with striker drag on my primers and 2 FTEs. I was done with sign after that honestly. I traded the gun in for a Glock 26 and had zero problems since. I like Sigs 226 and 2022. I would try and buy one of those but soured on Sigs newest platforms.
