Kendall Rae i think he killed his grandpa and mom was getting suspicious or maybe confronted him and Nathan killed her when they were out on the boat🤷🏼♀️ why would he drill holes and cover them so poorly right before taking off? And I don’t believe for a second that his mom “vanished” when the boat started sinking, so he never even heard her scream? To me, he is guilty.
@shannon72765 жыл бұрын
I think he did it the only doubt I have is why would he risk himself for 8 days at sea. Maybe he killed Linda on the boat and waited awhile to sink it but that doesnt really add up either. I think he made sure to tell a lot of people that they were supposed to be back by sunday so that the coast guard would find him. Also think he killed the grandfather just got away with it because they didnt think he could do it. If the family suspects he did this stuff then I believe them. Who knows what he could have been doing behind closed doors only family members would know about.

Cynthia Valencia “his portion” isn’t the whole thing. The money would still be split amongst the siblings and next of kin, then they’d donate what he would be given to charity. Don’t let that statement fool you into thinking they’ll donate the full inheritance to charity.

Cynthia Valencia I don’t think you understand what I was implying. They do not actually think he killed her. They want to make it seem that way because they want the money. That’s it. They throw around the “donate” and “charity” words because they are trying to appear to be genuine with their suspicion, when they truly are just using him as a way of getting their hands on all that money. It’s pretty obvious that they think pinning a crime on an autistic person is gonna be their ticket to millions of dollars. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if they all also killed their father and tried to pin it on Nathan too.

I agree. As a health professional who has dealt with children with Autism (I know Nathan is not a child) I see what you’re saying. I do believe that there were mistakes that he made unknowingly that made the boat sank. One thing that was not reported was if Nathan’s mom could swim or not... Cause if you think about it, let’s say that hypothetically she doesn’t know how to swim or is not good at it, she may have panicked and drowned. First rule of thumb when drowning or just simply in the water, don’t panic. With all that’s happening, Nathan also panics, get the life boat going and then searches for his mom. Autistic people tend to think of themselves first, then others. His behavior and the order of events are not surprising for someone like him. Also, autistic kids tend to be very truthful in regards of how they feel, that’s why we see how genuine he seems.

It’s definitely very possible. Think about how fast the titanic sank! A 52,000 ton ship sank in under 2 hours so it is more than likely true that his little fishing boat sank in just minutes.
@angelbrumfield61345 жыл бұрын
A boat can Definitely sink that fast
@FL07305 жыл бұрын
So the way he describes the sinking is accurate to how boats sink. They don’t sink slowly until the final tip gently dips below the surface like they do in movies. The boat will take on water until it’s buoyant force is zero. The more water that enters the boat, the lower the buoyant force will get until there is more ocean than boat to keep buoyant and it will sink FAST (think of when you were a kid in the bath and you would hold a cup in the water and slowly let the water in until it suddenly sank). It’s perfectly reasonable and not even that unlikely for the boat to swallow his mother if she was helping him try to fix the engine and was below deck. It took the Titanic only 5 minutes to be completely below the surface but the entire sinking process was 2 hours and 40 minutes. And that’s the TITANIC. Their small little boat would have gone down quickly. Also, one thing people with Autism tend to have in common is their difficulty lying. They don’t feel emotions or social pressures the same as others and they often don’t feel the guilt that makes people lie, so they don’t. I think they were both inexperienced boaters and his mother babied him and wanted to do whatever to make him happy. I don’t think he intentionally killed her but his actions and decisions definitely contributed to the accident that did.
@nikkinicole49904 жыл бұрын
Lauren Hayes Yes, My brother has Aspergers and he’s told me a couple times that, he feels emotion and he feels guilt but he doesn’t see any reason to express them or act on them because it wouldn’t aid in the situation. He’s very logical and to him “crying doesn’t make the situation better” and neither does guilt when something is clearly an accident so he just doesn’t and he holds these emotions in. Obviously it’s good to cry now and then but it doesn’t fix anything when you think about it and that’s how he is, everything is very logical and he can come off as rude or sarcastic because of this so I definitely think that’s what happened in the interviews with how the sinking happened. Also my brother in particular laughs when he tries to lie, you just gotta give him a what I like to call “mom” or “teacher” look. but other people on the spectrum get nervous or fidget or tick so definitely not very good liars.
@spookycloud4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for clarifying that. I figured a small boat would go down pretty fast, but I didn’t realize the titanic was under water in five minutes! Even if the boat took a few minutes to go down, it could have felt like an instant. My mom passed away unexpectedly in June and even though she was in the hospital for just over 3 days, it still feels like it all happened in the blink of an eye. When your brain is trying to process that level of trauma the timing can get lost in the mix.

Please can someone explain what's the difference between a boat being below the surface and it sinking?
@sdrkelley4 жыл бұрын
Chelsea xoxo Sinking would be the process of the boat starting to take in water and go down; being under the surface would be the end result of the boat sinking when the boat is completely under the water.

Awesome explanation! Getting yourself in a life raft when panicking in bad weather isn't all that easy either, did he even have a survival suit the Atlantic would have been freezing, how did he even survive swimming to the raft and not succumb to hypothermia? All manner of things go wrong when boats sink. I feel bad for Nathan I think he has to live with a lot of guilt and responsibility for his mother's death but I don't buy that he did it on purpose, unless he has nerves of freaking steel, this is an extremely risky way to murder someone.

@@charlieravin385 Yes totally agree with you, sorry you do not like the term high functioning however people are using the term to try and describe Nathans abilities on the spectrum, as you can gather i do NOT think he even has autism, he comes across as a psychopath to me, even top barristers would not come out of a court after loosing a case and start going into detail about how they intend to appeal, but Nathan did without any friends/family or legal team to guide him. 1, He worked for his Grandad in his business as right hand man. 2, he was not spoilt or was he given alot of money before his Grandad died, Nathan lived in an average house with average car, 3. Nathan brought a shot gun the same as what killed his Grandad two weeks before shooting, that went "MISSING" as soon as the Grandad was murdered. 4, Nathan was the only person on CCTV seen entering and leaving Grandads property during the time he was shot, without the gun the police could not prosecute, as Nathans was always in/out the Grandads house as the office was there. 5, When Grandad dies, Nathan is then given money from his mum to buy luxury boat/cars. 6, Mummy dies in mysterious accident and Nathan inherits and gets the lot from his mum. 7, The rest of the family hire 24/7 bodyguards as fear Nathan will kill then for their inheritance they received. 8, When Nathan was a young man his horse died, no one says how, however the police put out a national bulletin to warn public to not approach him, this is because Nathan had a temper and was a danger to the public. 9, Nathan is no fool, he is extremely clever and can defend himself in a court of law and also run a multi million pound business on his OWN. 10, It is my belief Nathan hides behind the privately funded diagnosis's of autism to explain away his psychopathic behaviour. When i used the term "high functioning" its been in reply other comments people made towards me, as i mention above i do not think he even has it as his behaviour exhibits no signs at all on any level !. I do not know what you mean by "we all have the same brain functions", as we do not, everyone thinks differently, however there are certain behaviours and traits that can be categorised. I personally am offended and outraged that Nathan is so devious as to hide behind autism as NO ONE with autism has ever behaved or acts the way he does. The are people saying ridiculous things about Nathan like - i’m not lay the sequel 4 months ago as somebody with autism myself, i feel like i can understand him. i don’t think he did it, i just don’t think he can properly express his emotions nor does he want to around all these strangers and attention he’s getting. he needs time to heal, probably by himself I say - Nathan expressed himself well in court and in front of the cameras, Nathan initiated the court cases and attention and went back for an appeal, how "i’m not lay the sequel " can think poor Nathan is beyond me, but throw in the word autism and she's assumed "he cant properly express his emotions ", and "does he want to around all these strangers and attention he’s getting", his actions say differently, hes calling press conferences, then Nathan "he needs time to heal, probably by himself" Psychopaths can not be healed they just learn to fake it and hide there true intentions.

Throwing my two cents in: 1. The mother on the boat -- if the boat was in an emergency scenario (sinking fast) two things are likely: first that he was hyper-focused on fixing the problem, which from my experience with neurodivergent friends and family usually means they miss very obvious solutions or other self-preservation things (think grabbing the hot burner you just used because you can only think about cleaning the stove - real thing that happened to me). Second that it is highly likely the boat lurched in some way, knocking the mother unconscious which would make it easy for her to get lost in the current and she wouldn't be able to respond to any of his calls. 2. I think the aunts are HIGHLY suspicious, and should definitely be looked into. From the information presented here, it sounds like they are greedy and see him as an easy fall guy. Mother dying on the boat was an accident (IMHO) and they are using the mystery as a scapegoat to get all of the money. It sounds like they never really liked him; and it sounds like he still cares for them in spite of everything. 3. Memory loss or confusion - especially in relation to time and activities - is fairly common in neurodivergent individuals. Not being able to establish an alibi in the case of the grandfather is not really suspicious to me. He may honestly not remember what he was up to in the time after; he didn't sound like he had many friends or family so no one else who can vouch; trauma has a habit of locking up even good memories. Obviously there may be things we don't know, and Kendall's right in saying that people with autism are also capable of murder, but I just don't think the facts line up this time.

If he was able to get on the raft himself then he was able to determine that staying on the boat would be dangerous so you would think he would have helped his mother get on the raft. Why would she stay on a sinking boat? It just doesn't make sense as to why she never got on the raft, there has to be reason why she did not survive and he did.
@Simplyjasmaine4 жыл бұрын
@@LandenLaliberte well since he said he repaired the boat and it had holes and he said she went under. Depending on how fast the boat sink and where he was located which to me seem like he was at the top so he would very much just grab a raft and jump into the ocean. Also, since he is autistic you have to take that into consideration like my brother he has it so i understand if you wouldn’t understand the different way he would react in this situation then us “normal” people.

I'm sitting here screaming!!! What about all the shady ass evidence against him!? The hunt magically was lost!? The chances of losing a gun are so rare! Unless you have a wild life with tons of sketchy people around you who may steal it from you...or you carry the gun everywhere and just set it down and left it. But I dont think Nathan was like this at all. I dont believe he just LOST the gun and then never made a police report. Also the hard drive and stuff...he got rid of it!? Why? Because he had shit to hide! And the holes he drilled in a BOAT before they left!? You only drill holes in a boat to sink it. Period. Hes no boat expert so he had no business "working" on a boat and making changes to it. He only knew that drilling holes would sink it. I honestly believe hes way smarter than people give him credit for. I think hes got a killer mind and he killed his grandpa and then killed his mom. I believe hes manipulative and has everyone fooled and feeling bad for him. I watch just about every crime show and nothing surprises me anymore. Linda and her sisters all passed a polygraph test, but Nathan refused to cooperate with investigators. When police searched his apartment seven months after his grandfather’s murder, they found a gun locker in his bedroom closet with a Remington shotgun and a pellet gun, neither of which was linked to the murder. But the next day, they got their biggest break in the case: Before his grandfather was killed, they discovered, Nathan had purchased a Sig Sauer Patrol 716 assault rifle, which was the same caliber as the gun used to kill Chakalos. When police asked Nathan why he hadn’t told them about the assault rifle, he said he’d forgotten about it. When they asked him where it was, he said he’d lost it.

He's now in a very vulnerable position because he doesn't have their support. Call me crazy, but I feel like this guy's being set up to some degree. My dad then received a 3 page hand written letter going off saying things like “how dare you come to my property and tell me what needs to be done with it” and “who the hell do you think you are?” Just the fact that something as small as that made him fly into such a rage shows that he had a lot of screws loose.

He bought a gun, he "lost" it, and the same type of gun was used to kill his grandfather. Isn't it just as likely--or possibly more likely--that someone who knew he had the gun stole it from him and killed his grandpa with it in order to frame him? It seems like he loved his grandpa very much and I just don't see the motivation there. It also seems like he had a close relationship with his mom. I don't believe for one second that he killed them.

Not only that but when Kendall says "same type of gun" she likely means same "caliber", considering tge murder weapon was never found. If he had a rifle in say .223 and his grandpa was killed by a .223 rifle, that really wouldn't be all that strange. Lots of "calibers" out there but there are the main, most popular ones.

I just relistened to the podcast of this episode and looked Nathan up only to find that he died by suicide while in jail awaiting trial after being charged for his mom's murder. He was also being held accountable for his grandfather's murder even though he was never charged. My heart is shredded. As someone who has recently begun to understand my autism, I see a lot of myself in Nathan and how I would've reacted to such an absolutely traumatizing event with zero family support. There is a very particular type of fear autistic people feel around being misunderstood or not believed because other people believe their interpretation of our words/actions is more valid than what we actually say, and I can only imagine his terror at realizing that he was trapped in a broken system surrounded by people who fundamentally didn't understand him. To feel that the only acceptable way forward was death. I imagine his mother would be heartbroken, this whole situation is truly a tragedy.
@alorarichards41225 жыл бұрын
I'm suspicious of him hearing how sketchy his grandfathers death is. Nathan was the last person to see him alive & police couldn't confirm where he was for the rest of the night. He'd recently purchased the same gun type that was used to murder his grandfather AND the next morning he conveniently discarded his GPS from his car, hard drive from his computer & his gun just so happens to be missing! That's crazy suspicious! & with his mothers likely death, experts believe there's no way he could have survived on that raft for 8 days, & he was seen tampering with the boat before they went out & it sank. But if that was his plan, it was way too crazy & risky. I know family can be really weird about inheritance, but I think they have good reason to be suspicious of him, especially with the evidence concerning him & his grandfathers murder. But theirs just not enough evidence to convict him.

As someone recently diagnosed with ASD, I found this case incredibly interesting (and very sad) and I'm thankful you presented it in such an unbiased way. Just from my own personal experiences, I can easily see how someone on the spectrum could get so focused on fixing an engine that he lost track of everything else. Including a boat sinking out from underneath him. I have no temporal perception when I'm like that. Even the way he spoke was very familiar. When I'm distressed, I have so much going on in my head that I don't have any energy left for making sure my voice has the right inflection or figuring out which expression is appropriate. That also makes it difficult to lie. It's like opening yet another tab in my browser and I simply don't have the bandwidth! I find it incredibly unlikely that Nathan planned to sink his boat. IMO, he just overestimated his knowledge and abilities and didn't see the bigger picture until it was too late -- something many of us are guilty of.

They also refused to acknowledge that I’m chronically ill and disabled. I’ve always tried my best to be the best person I can be, and even though they’ve never known me, I’m sure they would have nothing nice to say about me. I’ve gotta be honest with you, I think you’re bringing a lot of bias into this case. Why would he murder his mother in such an inconvenient and personally life threatening way? Especially since, if he did kill his grandfather, he got off Scott free for that. I don’t think he murdered his grandpa, but wouldn’t you think that if he got off for that he would find a similar way to kill his mother? Why go through all of the hassle of taking her out to sea, sinking the ship and risking his own life, losing his 80k boat, sitting out in open water for over a week all without the guarantee that he would be rescued? It doesn’t make sense at all, so I don’t see how you’re torn about this.

2 things make me believe this was an tragic accident. 1) Im on the schizophrenic spectrum and we share alot in common with autism. I can honestly say I would probably be just as awkward and emotionless if placed on the spot while still under high stress. He seems to have dissociated while talkin, ya can see the 1000mile stare in his eyes that says his mind is else where. 2) I've spent time on boats and large open water. This is a situation they trained us for in sea cadets, its that common. It doesn't take much for something to malfunction and next thing ya know you're under water. I mean a 40ft fishing vessel can sink in under 5 minutes, and they were on a rinkydink boat half that size. Plus neither has formal marine training or experience on the open channel. Its a recipe for disaster.

but hold on...if he planned to kill her he also planned to be trapped at sea for 8 days??? and luckily being found??? He's 100% innocent

Yo listen to his voice at 20:47 when he was talking about the memorial! You can hear how sad he is. Like his voice was so shaken. Not in a scared way he was sad. You can tell
@Misscutieful15 жыл бұрын
Exactly! He may show his emotions in a different way but you can still tell he feels genuine sadness for his mom’s death. Like she was basically his only friend and support, he doesn’t seem like the type to kill someone who’s all that to them for money. He doesn’t seem like a flashy guy or one who even splurges on luxury items. I think the aunt may have killed the grandad and weren’t expecting his share to be so big so with his mom’s accidental death they saw an opportunity to cast blame for the grandad’s death onto the ‘suspicious acting’ man with autism to draw attention from themselves.

Nathan sounds like he's trying so hard to not cry in every single interview, it's so distressing. Of course anyone can kill, but I seriously doubt Nathan did. Also, it feels to me that his family was just *waiting* for an excuse to shut him out, presumably because they didn't want to deal with him. It's so tragic that he lost the only family members who actually tried to connect with him, and now he's all alone.

Exactly. Some people said he didn‘t show any emotion, but for me is clear that he is devastated. His eyes, they show so much sadness.

One thing I want to point out is that relatives get REALLY weird when it comes to the money or items of someone who's just passed. Easy to blame the kid on the spectrum because he has no "emotion". Unfortunately when it comes to being on the spectrum not a lot of people understand what it is and that can cause deep rooted issues within a whole family. That could explain why there's so much bad blood. I am not saying he's not capable of murder, I honestly feel like if he DID do it I feel like we would see different behavior socially from him. Thats a big secret to hold and while he is " high functioning", socially it does not seem like he is. There would be a change in him holding something like that in.

I agree 👍 I wish there was more back story.

I agree. When my grandpa passed away I saw a lot of true colours from family members and how greedy and toxic they were being

But he drilled holes in a boat and didn’t patch them. Maybe he’s a sociopath?
@hayleyc11005 жыл бұрын
@@ylabea he did patch them. I read another comment saying that maybe when he drilled the holes he didn't realise that part of the boat would go under water when actually out in the ocean, and then what he used to patch the holes didn't hold up when they went out
@ylabea5 жыл бұрын
Hayley C looks like he didn’t wait for the patch to cure, so it’s like not patching them at all. It’s just going on the water is pretty serious, it just doesn’t make sense for anyone who owns a boat and has a boat license to not patch holes properly and not take preventing an accident seriously. It’s like drilling holes in a car tire, not waiting for the patch to cure and then trying to blame & sue the manufacturer when a fatal crash occurs. He might not feel empathy and that’s why he can keep the secrets.

I just watched this episode and i'm super frustrated. There is no way Nathan killed his mom. She was the only person he was really bonded with, who he loved, who he knew was there for him. Autistic people can kill, anyone can, but the idea that he would kill and loving, nuturing, trusting, person in his life doesnt make sense. He was irresponsible and thought he could handle more than he could, working on his own boat, and thinking he could go tuna fishing. These were mistakes he made, but there was no ill intention. And I will be the first to say, just because someone is family, doesnt mean they know a situation better. Absolutely not. Sometimes people in your family just suck and are toxic and evil. His family is shit, and they dont know anything.

This is exactly the kind of thing my little brother would do. He's always fixing things and building things himself, even when it's probably too dangerous, because he just gets hyperfocused on what he's doing and doesn't always think about safety precautions or risks if he hasn't been explicitly told how to stay safe. Also--Nathan was 17!
