Any prescription drug has potential side effects, some worse than others. When a prescription drug can raise your blood sugar, and indeed your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, you should know about it. This video reveals 7 drugs that raise your blood sugar
Here are 7 prescription drugs that will raise your blood sugar. There are others, but these are very common medications.
If you find yourself taking one of the listed medicines, please don't stop taking it, go see your doctor and discuss switching to another option. Chronically elevated blood sugar is one of the leading causes of chronic disease, best to make sure your medication is not the cause.

My doctor has me influenced by FIVE medications that EACH cause diabetes and keeps trying to pile on more of them while telling me "see? Keto doesnt work!! It's killing you!!" Every time I turn around, another one gets added to my regimen.

I was hoping you can answer this question. Does Seroquel cause diabetes itself? Or is the weight gain by using Seroquel that causes diabetes?

I spent 11 years on metoprolol. I suffered regular dizzy spells, on several occasions I lost consciousness. I asked one doctor after the next what was causing the fainting spells and dizziness. I had no idea until recently that the drug was causing my blood sugars to rise then suddenly drop causing the dizziness. I recently weaned off the metoprolol. The weaning process was a nightmare. I was having 5 or 6 dizzy spells a day. Now I have been off the drug for a month. and I am so much better. I have had only one dizzy spell and that happened after I had eaten a carb heavy meal. If I avoid too many carbs I am just fine. 11 years and not one doctor could tell me why I was having dizzy spells.

Here's a good one. I was on HRT and asked my gynocologist couldn't I take a bio-identical hormone instead? He said that's what I was already taking. Being my skeptical self, I read the package insert and it said right there in black and white that it could CAUSE DIABETES. So I quit taking it. This is the kind of thing we patients are dealing with out here Dr. Berry. I think you must be in the 1% of 1% of the top 1%.

KoiPondPeppy , I totally agree with you! Some doctors don't like to be questioned/challenged and will " discharge" you from the practice if you make too many waves and label you as a "difficult" patient! They will send you the dreaded letter of "Termination of the doctor/patient relationship" where they tell you you have 30 days to find a new doctor.

i started metropolol about 8 years ago, along with a statin. After that, I gained considerable weight, and no matter what I did- dieting, fasting, working out- nothing seemed to make any difference. I also had trouble getting into ketosis. I cut back on it, then stopped it at the first of the year. I am in full ketosis, and have lost a considerable amount of weight already. I always felt that there was something wrong, but I couldn't figure out what it was. Today I ran across this video and it confirmed what I had already began to suspect.

So thankful for all your videos and your book. I was pre-diabetic and reversed that with keto. Just bought a glucose test kit to monitor what's triggering any insulin response and searching your videos here to learn more. Turns out I take one of seven you listed here for hbp. But after roughly 8 months on keto, my bp might be low enough to let that med go. All ground work before my next physical coming up soon. Thank you for all you do. God bless.

I recently had an endoscopy, so I had to fast for 12 hours. I take metformin for insulin resistance and PCOS, and my fasting glucose is usually in the 70's. That morning it was 97. I had been on keto for a month, and it really helped me not be so grumpy from fasting, but I have no idea why my blood sugar was on the higher end like that. Now I'm on prednisone for 3 months and I'm actually losing weight. My body makes no sense anymore 🤷🏼‍♀️

I started this diet over a year ago to see if it could help with seizure control for adults. I had already learned decades ago in college how this diet was successfully use with children in the 1920's as a therapy to control seizures. I have been taking either primidone or mysoline for decades (both have phenobarbital in them) and I was never told it would raise my insulin levels. I can see how powerful this diet is in controlling seizures. I can really tell if I've eaten enough fat or not by how clear headed I am in the morning, and my seizure control is fantastic. I haven't felt this good since I was a teenager, before I was diagnosed with epilepsy. My theory at the moment is that ketones are effecting sodium channels on the axon hillock where most studies believe action potentials start. It took 5 or 6 months for me to actually start seeing the good results of this diet, but I'm glad I took the time and stuck with it or would have never found my answer. I still am taking primidone, but in about a month I will be completely off it because this diet really is powerful and I would rather do what Hippocrates said "let food by thy medicine and medicine by they food".

Hey Dr Berry. I am a 38 year old male with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, acid reflux, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, obesity and probably a couple more things I'm forgetting. I'm a veteran of the US Army and get my care through VA. I am a big/broad built fella at 5'6", 270ish. Of course, I've been prescribed almost every medication you've mentioned and both long/meal time insulin (50 units twice a day each). I've recently (10/12 days) adopted a lifestyle that I am trying to structure to be a combination of Paleo and Keto. I've stopped all my meds except Metformin and started most of your suggested vitamins + MCT oil. Seen some good results so far and lost around 10lbs (261.2lbs now). Keeping checks on blood sugar and am usually around 200 first thing in the morning but after I eat breakfast, I'm around 160 to high 120's the rest of the day. Similar to what I was seeing even on all the meds but was only checking in the morning before. I messaged my Dr to get an earlier appointment but was told regulations won't let her schedule me earlier than 6 months. I was trying to get a 3 month visit to check labs. Not sure I really want her to continue my care but my choices are slim. I know you have to be careful so without stepping out of your comfort zone, I'd appreciate any help/advice you can give. Thanks.

Prednisone made everyone I knew taking it retain water & make em bloat. Caused edema & pneumonia like symptoms in a family member. Top pulmonary physician at the Cleveland Clinic called it a "mystery pulmonary disease". When the steroid was removed along with other disease causing drugs the mystery disease disappeared. A large part of medical practice is a scam that causes diseases & iatrocide.

It was HCTZ that likely put me in the hospital with acute pancreatitis. I don't drink; I had no gallstones; my triglycerides were normal. So the medication was probably the reason, although the hospital staff just couldnt' say. Doctor I'm hopefully replacing soon actually wanted me to go back on it recently, and I'm pre-diabetic!

Started keto due to being very close to pre diabetic(A1C). I check my blood glucose before bed and it’s always below 100. Then I have been taking my statin 1/4 of a pravastatin pill right before sleep. I wake up and check glucose before anything and I’m 105-110. I have been so confused and finally make the connection - has to be the stupid statin. I skipped it last night - glucose in the 90s. I’m going to test it by taking in the morning and not taking it over time and see if that’s it. I react strongly to any meds - lowest dose is always enough (for anyone saying that low of a dose couldn’t be doing that). Thanks for confirming my suspicions Doc. Already dropped my blood pressure pill after 4 weeks of keto. Looks like the statin is next on the chopping block! Pharma is causing more illness than healing. Starting to think that people are right about pharma wanting to kill us instead of help us.

I was given a statin at the same time as Metfirmin for Type 2. I did my homework and month later stopped taking a statin. My cholesterol was not high. Less than a year later my cholesterol took a dive down and went down significantly on it's own. I had a radical hysterectomy and stage 1 uterine cancer was caught. I'm on estrogen, but bioidentical estrogen gel. In August my cholesterol was at it's lowest...no statin needed....

Another question you can ask your doctor is: how much of a kickback do you get from the pharmaceutical companies for every prescription you write from these drugs? I did, and I got the look like he wanted to kill me! It got him to the root! I'd rather die from NOT having his drugs than FROM the drugs they prescribe. I have a new doctor now.

Slightly off-topic here: Will you please talk about hypertension? I cannot take bp meds because of serious side effects. I was diagnosed when I was 14 yrs old. Systolic will go as as 200-300. Diastolic will range 100-160. I totally understand the risk because of my former profession and what I've been through already. I suspect a possibility of renal involvement or a remote possibility of adrenal. No doctor has been even remotely interested in doing any investigation and just want to throw pills at me that leave me almost completely non-functioning. I've given up on allopathic medicine because it was killing me and the dismissive, condescending, and sometimes obnoxious, treatment that I've received, I'd rather die than go back to them. I've been spending the last couple of years, especially the last year, intensely searching for better alternatives to manage it. I finally have made a little bit of progress by nutritional means, with keto and supplements, to where the bp will drop to 150/100 range, which is very exciting to me. Still pops up sometimes. No, it's not stress related. Yes, I'm overweight but losing with keto; however, even when I've been at my ideal weight, my BP still gets high. I do have a lot of other co-morbities. I've made good progress with some of it but need to do more. Life is more than having normal vital signs. On bp meds , can have normal vital signs but no quality of life. I'd rather be at risk and feel well enough to function and be productive in life than spend decades rotting away at home, unable to do hardly anything at all.

Our relationship with your doctor is a two way street. I write down my questions and I tell him that have questions that you need to answer before you leave for the next patient. He likes that I stand up for myself. Come to think about it my last doc took blood test twice a year to check.

I've been taking Atenolol since 2001. They couldn't get it for several months and I was switched to Metoprolol but I swtiched back to Atenolol since it came back. I didn't like how I felt on the replacement. Not too thrilled to hear this could give me Type 2 Diabetes. I'm into my 3rd week of Keto. I'm 58 and only need to lose about 20 pounds.

nancymarieg..........I too have been on Atenolol/Tenormin for about as long as you for SVT's (supraventricular tachycardia). About the past five years I have watched my A1C creep up one point each year getting more and more into pre-diabetes. This past year it went from 6.2 to 6.9!!!!! Granted the previous three months before my A1C were the holidays and I admit I didn't really watch but still that jump was significant!!!! Just turned 62 and have been cutting out sugars and carbs where possible. My doctor said three months and a repeat A1C. If it's still high, I need to consider Metformin.........no thank you! I'll fast and do low carb until it comes down. Need to consult with my cardiologist (who I'm overdue to see) on this new info about beta blockers! UGH! It's always something with meds!

Hey doctor Berry, can you make a video about : how much protein will spike your insulin ?
@Kuato
@Kuato 3 жыл бұрын
10 or more grams

@prepperjonpnw6482 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kuato I think your number must be off because 10 grams of protein is less than one bite of steak lol. Also I believe the question is concerned with causing a “spike” of insulin which would be described as an out of the ordinary extreme high not simply any rise in insulin.

I’ve been on prednisone since the middle of May. I know my sugar level is off but I need this to keep my platelets up. I am also on a high blood pressure medication for high blood pressure. So far I haven’t had that much of a problem. I also have to watch my sugar as diabetes runs in my dad’s family.

I was given a Bayer Contour next meter with strips and lancets for free at my doctors office and my insurance pays for the supplies with no copay from me. I really like it especially because I can hook it up to my laptop and it has very good software for tracking everything. You can see all your readings along with specifics like was the reading before a meal, after a meal, fasting, day and time, date. And you can share with or send to your doctor all the data. That way when you go for your next dr visit your doc has it all in your file already. I upload/update mine monthly and 3 days before my appointment. Cheers

I was diagnosed with PMR last July and put on 15mg of prednisone. Tried to taper off 3 different times w/o success, so my doc added Leflunomide. I have never had issues with my blood sugar, but I will probably be on the prednisone for at least another year. Should I still check to make sure I'm not high?

This is so true about steroids, I was in the hospital with a chronic sinus infection, they were giving me lots of steroid shots, my blood sugar shit up to 720 and they wanted to give me an insulin shot. I told them no that I was not diabetic, that I knew it was from the steroids. Once I got off the steroids it went back down.
