The first time I heard this song it was 1989, and I was driving out in the middle of nowhere on a dark night with no other lights than my own headlights. I'd never had anything like this to accompany me while roaring down the highway in the middle of the night. It was PERFECT. It's the only time I ever heard it on the radio, which was surprising. Probably because it was so different, but that's why I loved it. What a great story!

I had been in radio and met Kenny on an elevator in Dallas. I told him I played the Hell out of it on our radio station and I loved it; he said " You and about 20 other people, unfortunately"!! He was a very nice man, and I thought that song was very innovative!! (Gotta admit, it didn't have a great beat and wasn't easy to dance to! ;-)

I was 19- years old and had a job as the 6-11 pm DJ at a small country radio in Kentucky. I knew very little about country music because I wasn't raised on it. My Dad.was.into Rock, my Mom was pop Rock and easy listening. My experience with Country was limited to stuff that crossed over into pop charts like "Elvira" or "Devil Went Down to Georgia" and I did like some of the Alabama music. It was 1989-90 and we had a playlist that followed a.color code where Red was Top 10 chart songs and we had to play four of those per hour so one of those you'd hear every 2-2.5 hours and yellow was the rest of the the Top 40 and they 6-8 plays an hour and then we had a Blue which was 2-3 rotations in the hour and it could literally be whatever we pulled from the library, either a classic hit or something that had been released in the last couple of years. I found "Planet Texas" in the blue stack and it was so weird and different that I played it at least once every night. I didn't know if it had been a hit or not but it was in my stack and I played the fire out of that song from winter 1989 to the summer of 1990 when I left.

My father has this song on an old Kenny Roger's cassette tape, I remember hearing it growing up. This is one of the songs with many others that gave us the idea to take dad over to America this spring. My husband and I took my parents to see parts of Texas, Arizona, and a bit of New Mexico. The American Southwest is so different from the West Midlands here in England. I never really understood just how big America is till riding on your lonely motorways in the desert of west Texas to Arizona. Thank you for posting this song.

I see a lot of shared sentiment on old vs new music these days. You don't know how right you are. With an industry that now only caters to whatever draws the most attention and money, the lack of ethics and good old-fashioned morals is astounding. Personally, society has become morally bankrupt. It can't be said any plainer than that. And I'd gladly go back 15-25 years, just to be back when things were just that much better than today. Peace, people.

I was in the Astrodome at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo the night that Kenny unveiled that song. He had laser light show going on with it and the thing I remember the most is the entire Astrodome erupted with screams yell shouts Hoots clapping stomping her feet when he said the biggest thing in outer space of Planet noticed Texas. The Astrodome honestly rocked in vibrated back and forth! That song should have gone on to be one of his best but too many people just didn't appreciate Kenny Rogers at that time. Rest in peace Kenny I know where you are you're in heaven right next to the planet notice Texas

First time I heard this and saw the video was at my grandma's house, in central Virginia. They had cable, and had CMT, which is where it was playing. I remember being fixated on the video anytime it came on, the spurs being my favorite part. This brings a lot of good memories back to mind. There's nothing left of that farm anymore, it was sold and turned into multiple subdivisions. Without knowing it was there, you'd never know it once was a pretty big dairy farm for the area.

I wish there was a better quality online, I looked for an entire day to no avail. :( I do now, however, have a crystal clear FLAC audio version. :) Rarely have there been any media that inspire me to do much research LOL. I think this was a bit ahead of its time. If it were first released today, it may be better received than it was in 89.

I didn't remember the name of this song at first...saw Rogers perform it live on the Tonight Show sometime during 1989-90. Then I saw the video form on KFVS-12 Cape Girardeau, MO in 1994 or 1995 during overnight on a Saturday, as a filler sometime around the time they were replaying the Rush Limbaugh TV shows of the previous week.

You could be right about the timing, but I've never understood why it wasn't more popular when it first came out. Perhaps some radio stations and video channels were a little scared that listeners would have a racist interpretation of the line " I knew they were the good guys, 'cause their cowboys hats wuz white" - which would be trifling and sad. But, I'm just glad this quality music reached you in Japan.
