Yachiru is his blade manifested in outer world, thus you could say Yachiru is his bankai in a manner of speaking. So while not even awakening his blade in the inner world (thus still considered sealed) or even sensing that his lieutenant was his zanpakuto spirit manifested unintentionally is very impressive. Kenpachi awoke Bankai halfway in a short time with a sword he stole (that was in a sealed state) and yet could not release his Shikai or even know his sword's name.

A huge part of this achievement is his monstrous spiritual pressure which was so potent that it damaged his blade, but a part of issue of the damage was some disharmony between his power and his blade's. A neat detail that i think goes under the radar is the fact that the OST 'What can you see in their eyes' plays as gremmy sees kenpachi cut a meteor and seeing his shikai. the lyrics of that ost go along the lines of 'i can feel, their too strong, there is nowhere to hide from force that can tear them apart and banish their souls'. I like to think this is actually whats going on in Gremmy's head,as well as that he calls him a monster right after. After this point, kenpachi was never going to lose, because any doubt gremmy has in his head will turn against him.

Having Kenpachi’s inner child come out in the thrill of battle was an excellent touch not found in the manga. Its even cooler, cause I remember reading Lubu vs Thor in Record of Ragnarock a couple years ago, and I remember thinking that LuBu looked just like Kenpachi, and in his final moments his inner child came out too.

Gremmy kept digging himself deeper and deeper into a hole by trying to impose some sort of limit on what Kenpachi was capable of. Saying that there was "nothing you can do" sort of inherently shows that Gremmy's imagination was just far too narrow. Because if cutting a meteor was something that should be "impossible," it just meant that Kenpachi's abilities were beyond his imagination. He eventually just imagined Kenpachi as undefeatable.
