Great info, thanks! I hope folks do watch all the way to the end, because your last point is **critical**. With watering, KBG does as well as the TTTF. But the latter is much more resilient in drought conditions. You can get away with a lot less water with the modern TTTF varieties. A useful test (not better, but different information) would be to have plots that are watered the bare minimum to keep the grass from going dormant, and plots that are watered the bare minimum to keep the grass from dying, and report on those minimum amounts of water (in inches or gallons/area, whatever). My experience with blends is that the bluegrass and rye die off much quicker in hot & dry conditions, leaving patches between the fescue that wind up having to be reseeded (there's no spreading grass left alive to fill in on its own). Some places will enjoy monsoon-like weather in the summer as the climate continues to warm and change, but for much of the US, hotter & drier summers are going to be the norm (and already are for that matter). We're already seeing water shortages, and that's only going to get worse, so trying to keep large areas of lawn with grass that require huge amounts of water to stay alive is less and less practical. Quantifying the actual water requirements not just to the extent of "well, this grass can be kept alive", but more along the lines of "this is the _least_ amount of water you will need in order to keep the lawn alive" will be critical information for people maintaining lawns (whether homeowners like me or professional lawn care folks like you). For my own part, in the Pacific Northwest: I just can't justify the amount of water it would take to keep KBG or ryegrass alive in the summers we are having now. Breaking heat records every year, it would take literally ten **thousand** gallons of water per week to keep my half-acre of lawn alive if it were KBG. With TTTF, I can do a single heavy watering before each heat wave (so far, the hot 100+ conditions only last a few days before we get back down into the 80's), and that's plenty to keep the fescue alive (though not necessary active...much of it still goes dormant), while the KBG and ryegrass that's been in the blends still die off. I've switched to overseeding with TTTF only, so over time the lawn will shift to being much more drought-tolerant, something sorely needed since as a society we've failed to protect the planet from the warming we've created.

You should have no problems growing Kentucky Bluegrass in Upstate South Carolina, especially if you have an inground irrigation system and light shade (Bluegrass prefers full sun to light shade). If you pick the right cultivar, you will not have fungus issues. I will pick the following cultivars: Midnight, Blue Coat, or Turf Blue HGT by Barenbrug. You can order those cultivars online or if you are in the NC area you can pick them up.

@@Kenzi9098 That's crazy. I overseeded with rye last fall. Pete's rye seed. It was the darkest green lawn I've ever had.. And my lawn was the best in my subdivision. So I don't have to overseed with rye every fall. But was a little discouraged when Pete told me it may be too hot for it through a summer out here. Then I saw your comment and thought maybe I could take a chance... I know my humidity is way higher then what you get there in Cali. But the temps through summer is about the same. I can see where KBG on the West coast like California or Utah does well even with the high temps they get but no humidity but for it to do so well in the Carolina's is amazing. In Michigan, the Greater Detroit area, and alll the towns and cities, in the suburbs, when a new home is built,everyone gets Kentucky Bluegrass sod. We have several huge sod farms and they all grow Kentucky Bluegrass, then cut, rolled up, palletized, and shipped to all the homes. The sod farms are beautiful, and that grass will be ready to be shipped in the next several weeks to months. That being said, all the homes that have KB sod also has an irrigation sprinkler system. That's huge here in Michigan. I've never seen a sod installation tthat didn't have sprinklers. If you have KB then you must keep the water flowing, and that's usually every other day for 10-12 minutes to keep it green and healthy, otherwise it will burn, scortch, and not look green, and will show signs of stress.

I've put in KBG lawns but TTTF and KBG blends are what I plant for the most part. KBG loves the humidity of Northern Ohio. The problem is when it's hot and the humidity drops, you have to pound it with water. My Yard is 100% KBG that is irrigated. Right now it's sunny and pushing into the 90's with moderate humidity. I'm running 1 1/2 hrs per zone, twice a week. I've been pounding polymeric resin, humates and kelp this year. Looks killers but your stuff looks like the bomb!

Being in Minnesota with Kentucky bluegrass, I don't think it's the heat as much as it's the relentless heat that you guys might get down there. Our July and August gets in the mid-90s, but the nights cool down to the low 70s in upper 60s. That is the most stressful time for the grass, but it likes those cooler nights. In May and September it's freaking gorgeous.

I'm slightly north of Richmond, VA, and our temperatures and humidity are pretty neck & neck. I also have a 650 sq. ft. test patch of Rye and Midnight KBG. I'm renovating my soil in the back which sucks. 5.3 pH, iron less than 1/2 the minimal acceptable rate, but the Rye/KBG is still looking good and thickening up, and it was put down last fall. I have 2 dogs so I'm trying to figure out which would be better for the back yard with my 50 and 65 pound dogs. Between the two, I like the Zoysia because it doesn't clump and stick under the mower deck, not at all. I can clean my mower deck after mowing the cool season stuff in the back, then mow the front, and my deck is even cleaner after mowing my Zoysia.

Thinking of going 100% KBG when I move into my new house. If I do I hope I can get it looking like yours.

Here in SE Michigan, there are a few Zoysia lawns that do very well during peak heat and humidity. Survives the winters too. Doesn't look that great spring and fall, however. I haven't seen one around here properly mixed with kbg or rye either.

About 2000 sqf of KB grass I planted last fall looked fine this past spring but has died by June. Now it’s not only “looked dead”, it is pale yellow, dried like straw and matted to the ground. If lightly raked, it’d be pulled right out. I’m only to replace my lawn with Black Beauty Ultra this fall. Transitional Zone 7.

Did you have fungus problems with your kbg, or irrigation?
@o_o4320
@o_o4320 3 жыл бұрын
@@Johnny53kgb-nsa Being in N. VA, we always treat the lawn with two types of fungicides several times from early spring to summer, along with two different grub, insect controls and moss ex. As for watering, we have had enough rains this past couple months, and we watered early in the mornings after more than 5 days without a drop between heavy rains. Although our KBG lawn is dead, there is very little weeds because we take care of it. The rest of the yard is beautifully landscaped, that’s why the dead grass is such an eyesore.

I live in Montreal and I can assure you that my KBG is exposed to very high temps and humidity in the summer months...Worse than that, is the fact that we increasingly have watering restrictions for extended periods of time..... The only way my KBG survives is if I mow to 4+ inches..... A lot of my neighbors keep it short and we see mostly yellow grass (but not dead) or dormant KBG. However, come cooler temps in fall...and wow! the grass comes to life with a rich dark color... IT REALLY IS A COOL SEASON GRASS..... If I lived in transition area...I am not sure I would have KBG Unless.... I could freely water it anytime!

Well Pet I was going to got with the TTTF but I sure do like the look of that KBG. If you move your finger over to Kansas SE from where i think you are i'm right on the same line (don't remember what that's called without looking it up. LOL) I got to make up my mind soon don't I if I want to plant this fall. hummmmmmmm LOL I should burn my front yard up really but don't know if the city would let me do that. May have to ask. They both look great, let me ask you one thing witch one would do better in a shaded spot? I have two large shad trees I don't want to lose. If you have time I know you go 500 MPH all the time and about to get into 1000 MPH time of season for you. God bless and thank you for all your help brother.

Pete...... I put Tall Fescue Sod in last September. It has done well. But keeping it at 4 to 4.5 inches is a problem. My mower just doesn't cut that well at that height........and I can't afford to go back to a Zero Turn (like I had at my old house......just don't have the money in retirement). I was thinking about over seeding the Tall Fescue with your Blue Heat mix this fall and start converting the lawn over Kentucky Blue. I would like your opinion on whether that would work out. I live in Southern New Jersey and our summers are much like yours. Ultimately, I'd like to get my cut down to about 3 inches. Thanks.
