I wish there was a Triple Crown points system with a $5 million bonus for the points leader. Only way you can be eligible for bonus is if you run in all 3 races. And if you lose the K Derby, you can STILL win the bonus if you finish high in Preakness and Belmont, etc. Up til the middle - late 90s we often saw all 3 races have many of the same horses. Announcers referred to "rivalries". We don't just see that any more.

I Sierra Leone had gone to the 2 year old sale he would have probably sold for quite a bit less than $2,300,000.

That is correct - with a stride like that probably much less and since he developed late, he probably wouldn't have worked very fast.

That paddle could be tiring late in the long distance of the Derby. Closing late is not always a problem. Street Sense and Mine That Bird came up the rail saving ground around the final turn. For some reason the nation's best jockeys seem to forget that leaving the rail open is not a good idea. Charles Borel "Borail" took advantage of that and won a few Derbies. He finished first On Street Sense, Mine That Bird and Super Saver. It does not seem that Sierra Leone likes to run along the rail. He comes with a sweeping move on the outside losing lots of lengths wide around the final bend in the process.

There have been plenty of successful runners that had a not so straight way of going. I don't see it as an issue, unless it leads to injury. Side note: I got to watch Forever Young in his workout yesterday and I really like how relaxed he was. Literally starting off the ride on the buckle in a relaxed, loose trot way from everyone. Very different from years prior with other over seas runners I've seen. I don't think he's got the fastest times, but he has the right mindset.

Agree, Forever Young seems to be the first Japan horse over for the Derby that is not a basket case. He seems relaxed, his races have shown versatility. He arrived early. He should run well and I expect him to run well.

This gait abnormality is a major issue over 10F. It is my only concern regarding this colt. The last two paddlers that contested the KD didn't emerge the winner i.e., Essential Quality and Vekoma.

2 favorites still are not at churchill working out. don't like. even Japan horse got their april 13th.heard Chad saying take S. l . to churchill to learn how to break out gate better. Hugh red flag to me. realise he's not catch the pace from train tracks.😂

I think I’m going to approach betting the Kentucky Derby differently this year. With my recent bad luck since Maximum Security got DQ’d, I’m only betting to SHOW. I rewatched last year’s Derby. Do you remember how people on KZbin were so high on ANGEL OF EMPIRE? He ran a good race as the chalk but he moved a little too late. Mage moved sooner and he won it. This is my feeling with Sierra Leone. There hasn’t been a Blue Grass winner who won the KY Derby since 1991. And we’ve had some good ones recently like Good Magic, Essential Quality, and Zandon. Maybe Sierra Leone is Zandon Part 2? Horses like Zandon and Angel of Empire get heavily supported on Derby Day only to watch them finish 3rd. That might be Sierra Leone seeing the pattern. So I’m looking at the show payouts for Zandon and Angel of Empire. The odds for them is somewhere between $2.30-2.80 to 1. I might as well take that chance instead of losing on another win bet and Sierra Leone only finishes 3rd. If let’s say the show payout for Sierra Leone is $5 because Zandon was $5.60 and Angel of Empire was $4.70, I can go $60 on that. Take 5x30. That’s $150 net profit to me. I might just play it that way. I’m sick and tired of losing the Derby placing win bets on half the field. If I’m going to lose, I will simply pray that one of my horses finishes 3rd. I still win money even if my horses lose. $60 SHOW Sierra Leone $20 SHOW Stronghold Resilience Mage paid $9 for show last year. Or I’ll keep it simple: $100 SHOW on Sierra Leone. That could still net me around $250. It ain’t much but it’s better than being a -100. It’s tough to win a race like that. You can love a horse like Holy Bull or Point Given and they will mysteriously run off the board.

I agree with one of your points about Sierra Leone. He's a real deep closer. Recent deep closers who were backed and not able to get there....Tapit Trice and Mo Donegal come to mind.

The great mare Zenyatta took 19 races in a row as a deep closer. Unfortunately, in her 20th she failed to catch Blame on his home track in her last race. Blame came up the rail at CD and held her off by a nose.

Sierra leone is my best bet to show but, I dont like him to win. Even if fierceness doesnt fire I think a horse that gets the jump on Sierra Leone will hold him off. Just a touch could turn the tables on him in a 20 horse field.

@johnfrancis2979 if he can get up for the win, I'd be happy for him, but he seems like one of the most logical choices to hit the Superfecta, at least.
