Hi Dr. Simi, thanks so much for this informative video. I wanna ask what’s the best method of hair removal for someone with KP that will help minimise or even prevent further irritation on the skin. Will you recommend; shaving, waxing, hair removal cream, or laser? Or is there another way?

Hi Dr. Simi, I developed KP in my mid-20's, and after researching I opted to try chemical peel, which actually removed all of it. But then it came back after a couple of months with a vengence, and now it looks much worse than before. Do you think this is just KP or something else?

3:18 i don’t know why but I started getting emotional when she started talking about this. Because I really relate to the whole not wanting to show my body because of this condition. I have it all along all parts of my legs accept the inner thigh, and I always wear long pants because im self conscious about what others will think. I’m also always uncomfortable when wearing shorts so it gets hard in summer. I never really wanted to peruse a way to get rid of these bumps until recently. I had someone who commented on the way my legs looked and I said I have a skin condition, and they asked if it was contagious. This really got to me and I felt really terrible about it. But I hope by watching this video I’ll be able to self treat and get rid of them for good.

You're very good at explaining in detail and you educate people without being condescending. Thank you for giving a more thorough explanation! My boyfriend (who is hispanic) was struggling to figure out what skin condition he had because we couldn’t find anything that looked similar. We didn’t think it was KP at first because most pictures online were of lighter skin with red bumps but his didn’t have a color. Now we both agree this is probably what he has after seeing what it looks like on different people. Thank you so much for explaining how skin conditions can affect other ethnicities differently & can look differently on other skin tones! as a south asian teen with severe keratosis pilaris since childhood this video is so so helpful, thank you for focusing on the effects on skin of women of colour, i've got hyperpigmentation from scrubbing my arms in the hopes of getting rid of the condition but am trying to go through the chemical route from now. i find it frustrating that a lot of hydrating body cleansers and washes are so much more expensive in price though
@DrSimiAdedeji
@DrSimiAdedeji 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! As you've already noticed, scrubbing the skin leads to irritation and hyperpigmentation which will fade with time and can be helped using topical skin care products that contain tyrosinase inhibitors such as Arbutin, Kojic acid etc. Vitamin A (Retinoid) creams can also help and you may choose from non prescription formulations and preparations that are only available on prescription from a doctor. CeraVe does a great range of inexpensive hydrating body cleansers including one that contains salicylic acid which helps with KP. Most CeraVe products also contain Niacinamide which helps to clam irritated skin, improve the skin barrier and help to reduce pigmentation. I hope this helps.

I'm 26 and I have kp since I was 4, basically it's all over my body, even in the face, and it never bothered me personally, mentally or socially. As the doctor said, it's a harmless condition and it can be easily treated. I personally don't follow any clinical treatment, I just use a good body moisturizer and that controls any dryness. If that condition makes you feel uncomfortable, I recommend you to treat it with a dermatologist, but it shouldn't have to be an impediment to develop social relationships, so don't worry about that. Or you just can say you have crocodile skin :p that's what I said every time people asked me about my skin and it always made them laugh, cheer up!

I had it bad on my upper arms and thighs as a teen, very red and large patches of it. Now that I'm 33 it's mostly gone, except for a small patch under my chin (though I'm not positive that's kp, may well be something else). I think by my mid twenties it was gone. I used a lactic acid lotion from my derm, there's plenty of OTC ones though! I said this because it will go away eventually! I hope treating it works well for her!

I can't tell you how much it warms my heart that you discussed what this looks like on different skin types. I've seen several videos by dermatologist and they often describe it "red bumps" which doesn't apply to me because I have dark skin. I have other skin concerns as well and it's frustrating to look on the internet and find only pictures of light/white skin or to go to the walk in clinic and be prefaced with "You have dark skin so it's hard to tell but (gives me incorrect diagnosis). I feel #seen

I’ve had it all of my life, my father has it and we are Cherokee Indian. I’m 36 and it is at it’s worst. I’m seeing a dermatologist in a couple of weeks for the first time since I was a child. I’ve tried everything OTC and nothing has worked. All combos, all lotions, all acids, dry brushes, loofahs, etc. Summers and the sun have always been my savior as bad as it is as far as damage but it’s great for KP. Thank you for the information.

Thank you Tracey! On my channel, I address the difference between Black and Caucasian skin in my skin videos and I also address any differences in terms of medical conditions in my Women's Health videos. For example, certain skin conditions are more common in black skin such as DPNs, hyperpigmentation and keloid scarring and black women are more likely to suffer from certain medical conditions such as fibroids, certain forms of hair loss and Type 2 diabetes compared to Caucasian women. Even Bacterial Vaginosis has been shown in certain studies to be more prevalent in the Afro-Caribbean/African-American population compared to the Caucasian population. It's interesting to examine why these differences exist and what we can do about them whilst gaining control of our own health. Hope you find my channel a source of valuable information and education! Stay tuned for more videos on skin and products and ingredients that I recommend that work for our skin. Thanks for your support!

I had no idea at the time what it was, so I saw a dermatologist. Unfortunately I came out not learning a thing about this after she just told me what it was and sent me on my way. I know it’s a very common thing now, because I had to do my own research. But I thank you very much for this video going into depth of this because I learned way more about it. Thank you for this.. I think i realized that physical exfoliants were making my skin worse. I had it on my mind to pick up cerave so im hoping that helps. Would using The Ordinary glycolic acid be okay ? I have KP on my legs (darkskin) with bumps and the dark dots. Hoping to use a simple but effective routine. thank you
@DrSimiAdedeji
@DrSimiAdedeji 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Glycolic acid will help exfoliate the surface of the skin but doesn't exfoliate inside the pores which is where you really want to target. Opt instead for salicylic acid (BHA) which would be more effective as it can exfoliate inside the pores and help better with KP. I would avoid physical exfoliants as they can make your skin worse and cause hyperpigmentation especially in darker skin tones. The CeraVe SA (Salicylic Acid) smoothing cream contains salicylic acid and there is also a CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser too. I would recommend these products over The Ordinary Glycolic for KP. Hope this helps.

Hi. I'm sorry to hear that this is affecting your self confidence so much. if you have tried salicylic acid cleaners and creams and moisturisers containing urea you could also try retinoid cream. Some people report that microdermabrasion also helps although care has to be taken with darker skin tones not to cause hyperpigmentation. Failing that some types of lasers can also help with the appearance of KP. I hope this helps.

I had kerotisis polaris on the back of my arms, elbows, back of upper thighs and side of hips in HS. I visited a dermatologist and they gave me 2 medications which helped tremendously on the bumpiness. People told me it felt like I had goosebumps lol. Although it took the bumpiness away, it left some of the black spots behind on my elbows and hips, which aren't that noticeable. I do however still feel them slightly on my hips. But like she said, moisture helps.
