What are Kerbals made of? Human emotions! They are 100% the embodiment of our emotions. That's why their reactions are always dialed to 11, regardless of what they're experiencing. Joy, Fear, Awe, Bewilderment, Confusion, Melancholy. Which, to play off of Matt Lowne's comment: I feel that's why they don't need sustenance, as the energy OF the emotion is what sustains them. Therefore, in my mind, a stranded Kerbal could only ""die"" if they were to stop being excessively emotive. As soon as the fear or panic (what have you) subsides, they are no more. To that end, I don't think I've seen a Kerbal be rendered unconscious, that could just be my inexperience with KSP, but IF that mechanic is not in the game, it only helps my 'theory' about them even more. Because when you're rendered unconscious............ you are unable to express emotion! ;) So for a Kerbal, to be rendered unconscious is equatable to death; thus, my justification for its absence! :P _(I'm not sure I can qualify g-LOC since it sounds like it's rather brief? If not, then I'll happily take back that aspect of my 'lore' lol)_ - *_ALSO_** ..... KSP2 PLEASE DON'T RUN ON UNITY, PLEASE DON'T RUN ON UNITY* 🙏🙏🙏 I really don't want KSP2 to have all the limitations of KSP1 due to Unity Engine's horrible (lack-of) multithreading at the Engine's core, like is the case with LITERALLY every single Unity powered game I own, where when things get too complex (ie physics calculations), the game grinds to a halt... :( KSP, People Playground, Planet Nomads, SimplePlanes, Valheim, Besiege, Universe Sandbox... Those are all successful/popular enough _(maybe not People Playground)_ and properly illustrate my point. Unity was/is great for its designed purpose of easy to make games during a time when computers were only dual core and a serial threaded application worked just as well, only reinforced by smartphones where it really took off, which remained single or dual core for a looong time. Sadly, the engine evolved and gained popularity, being available as cross-platform, and it is certainly capable of making GORGEOUS environments... But sadly the code at its center seems stuck in 2005 and my understanding is that to give it modern capabilities (ie parallel threading) down to the *core* level would simply take way too much work. (Presumably the Unity group feels they are doing fine as is and that effort is too monumental. So please don't make another great game that uses Unity, which ultimately gets hampered by the engine's limitations! Which is there's physics involved, the engine will be unable to keep up by trying to calculate it when it has to track """too much stuff"" (for a serial thread to handle), and thereby cause framerate to suffer since it can only refresh things after those thousands of other calculations are finished. :( _[NOTE: Graphics _*_settings_*_ are irrelevant, which is why I included People Playground and Universe Sandbox, being almost purely physics based games]_ /RANT _EDIT: I see YoutTube hates line breaks. Yay :( So hopefully I was able to make it a bit less of a word-wall now._

Here is my version of how a life support system could be implemented: Let's take inspiration from the CommNet system. That one also makes the game harder, but improves realism and challenge. The main component is a "morale" value for each crewmember. This can change by several conditions, including food supply, "comfort" of habitat modules (bigger free space, artifical gravity or better views means bigger comfort) or if the atmosphere outside is breathable. Morale ties into the existing bonuses the crew provides, like converter efficiency - higher morale means bigger bonuses, while low morale will substract bonuses. There should also be more things that need the presence of a crew, to accomodate for the extra complexity with them. This system approximates relatively well the real problems of tending to a crew, while being simple and forgiving enough. There could also be tweakable modifiers to this system for those seeking extra or less challenge, like losing reputation for each crewmember that has low morale, or turning the system off entirely.
