Agreed. As I see it, fuel economy features on newer engines often cost more in the long run. A little fuel is saved, but repair costs skyrocket at higher mileage, say 120-150k.

Help me understand ... If BMW is aware of the issue on this new B58 version, and there is a TSB and the problem will be corrected, what is the issue here?? Is it because it's soon after release, or because it is unusual for other reasons?
@garyderian43506 ай бұрын
When the exhaust valves are closed, the Valvetronic keeps the intake valve closes. So the air in the cylinders acts like springs and little energy is lost. If the engine is pumping air energy is consumed.
@kern4176 ай бұрын
not sure about that one. even at minimum valve lift the cam should still be actuating the valves.
@garyderian43506 ай бұрын
@@kern417 If the intake valves opened even a little, and the exhaust were disabled, the air would pump back into the intake. This would consume energy and defeat the purpose of disabling the exhaust valves. By logic, BMW would have tweaked the Valvetronic to keep the intake valves closed.
@sonerozgur6 ай бұрын
When fuel and ignition is turned off the pistons are still moving air and it consumes energy. Blowing air from intake thru exhaust costs kinetic energy. Taking away heat from engine block is also energy loss. Closing the valves cuts this energy loss. Not sure how this helps with mechanical friction. Maybe frictional forces on cam are also reduced because of smaller spring force.
@garyderian43506 ай бұрын
@@sonerozgur Right. Pumping air takes energy. A cylinder with a cracked open valve will see pressure on the upstroke, which leaks out, then vacuum on the down stroke. Keeping both valves means the compressed air pushes the piston back down. Friction is unchanged, but this is better than consuming both friction and pumping air.

Look ma a made it into one of Kerns videos!!!! Yeah this gen 3 b58 “cylinder deactivation” is definitely different from the traditional variable lift lifter technology that GM used or still uses idk. Regardless whatever this alien technology cylinder deactivation is I’m not here for it if it causes increased unreliability and complexity. It’s cheaper and more environmentally friendly (if that’s ur thing) to spend a lil more on gas than to replace heads/engines. I was talking about this new gen 3 b58 and its issue with some of the 30 plus year techs at my work today (I work at Toyota as a beginner technician and my own b58s/bmws on the side) and we were all so confused as to why bmw would do this and couldn’t figure out how this new system works either lol. Gotta hand it to Toyota for never dipping their hand in this pot even thought they do make mostly boring cars, with several exceptions ofc.

The 7 series and x7 have been using a mild hybrid since 2021 on their b58 versions. Are those also considered gen 3? What engines are found in the 21 and 22 MY x7 ? It sems all of them are mild hybrid? Are these a gen 2 B58 with just a generator instead of alternator?
@mbradea6 ай бұрын
Can you pleaaaase please do a video on the new B48 mild hybrids? Thea IMO are the biggest news for BMW but man are they ever keeping the details under wraps. No fuel economy measures posted anywhere (US, UK, Canada sites), they list identical HP and TRQ measures - which tells me they are explicitly making sure they only pump electric power under the max hp/torque curves. Would be great to dig into the actual power delivery of these engines, do they shut off under coasting at ANY speed (like dropping into neutral on the ZF 8SP), how do you instruct the engine to “eat speed”/regenerate break now that the shifters are all gone? With the prior engines putting the gear level left would downshift aggressively so that you would engine brake, same thing on the i3 except it would bump up the regen breaking so that you can do that dynamically at every stop you make. How do you now do this dynamically (ie: not a drive mode) without a shifter?? 😫

On the oil issue, my 2025 X5 manual says to use either BMW LL01 FE or LL22 FE++. LL01 FE can be had up to 0W-30. The LL22 FE++ is the super thin stuff. Since the TU2 engine has port injection, low speed pre ignition is not an issue, so it does not require an SP oil. SL, SM, and SN oils are good.
@chrisbradley32246 ай бұрын
Whether or not it can have LSPI depends on a lot of factors and I don’t think you can generalize because you don’t exactly know how the DME is functioning and engine is designed in general. You won’t find an old API spec on a new BMW spec oil anyway.
@garyderian43506 ай бұрын
@@chrisbradley3224 The owner's manual specifies SL, SM, or SN. It does not specify SN+ or SP which are the low calcium oils intended to combat LSPI. The chance of LSPI is greatly reduced with port injection. Having both port and direct is the best of all worlds, except for the cost and complexity.
@chrisbradley32246 ай бұрын
@@garyderian4350 you’re using SP packages anyway. All recent LL01FE, 17FE, and 22FE are going to have low calcium and half magnesium additive packages. Try doing some actual research.
@garyderian43506 ай бұрын
@@chrisbradley3224 🙄 You don't have to be a jerk about it. My point is the TU2 has a low chance of LSPI if a higher calcium oil is used. Older oils have better wear properties. The first and second gen B58s should use SP oil.
