I absolutely love that Murphy the Eagle has been given another Eaglet to care for. It would be awesome if all Eagles who are no longer able to be out in the wild can also be able to foster parent an Eaglet in need so the Eaglet will be able to go back out into the wild and live like an Eagle and hopefully be able to also have a family of their own too. Thank you sweet Murphy and humans too for helping this Eaglet get love and the care that it needs from an Eagle rather then a human.👏🏻👏🏻🥰❤️🙏🦅🦅❌⭕️

It’s Murphy’s advanced age and strong nesting instincts that made him the ideal foster parent - which is the extreme exception rather than the rule. Fostering eaglets from a brood other than one’s own isn’t instinctual to eagles - or even something they’re interested in. Except for the bird they’ve pair-bonded with, they’re quite competitive for food and territory. Among wild eagles, parents generally put themselves before their offspring. Just this year, Big Bear’s Jackie ate two of her own eggs (though non-viable) - and in Shepherdstown WV, a father killed two of his own eaglets and ate them. Viewers also watched in horror on KZbin’s livestream as PA’s famous eagle “Duke” killed and ate his first-hatched. Eating one’s own hatchling occurs because eagles often don’t recognize their own young. Eaglets are defenseless against adult eagles - and there is ordinarily a very high risk that an eagle will view an eaglet - especially not of their own brood - as prey. So providing captive eagles with “the opportunity to foster an eaglet in need” would prove utterly disastrous - if you’re hoping to raise that eagle for future release. The professionals know what they’re doing.

Go Murphy! 🦅 Dad Eagles seem quite hormonal and capable of raising young; one in SWFL raised his chick alone after the mother disappeared, another in Big Bear was hesitant to stop incubating 60-day-old nonviable eggs, even after the mom gave up.

They probably has strong parental instinct as a mother since most birds raise chicks together. Some species more than others, eagles turns out to be that.

Big Bear has a cool camera stream of nesting bald eagles! One thing I learned from watching it--eagle dads care a lot about their chicks. They come up with strategies to distract mom so they can get time with the eggs and the chicks. If mom comes back and they're not done, they let it be known before they take off. And they love their mates. They bring whole fish right to her to keep her happy and the eggs warm. Eagle dads are a role model!
