I find this kind of reporting incredibly disappointing. In the context of sustainability of a keto diet, my wife and I are in our early 70s. Twenty plus years ago we followed the food pyramid regime closely and found we kept adding on weight. I peaked out at 83 Kgm (on a 170 cm frame). Finally we removed highly processed food from our diet and then came across the paleo concept. We moved steadily toward paleo then found information on LCHF and again adjusted our diet. Then we heard about keto and adjusted our diet further. We have spent at least the last 5 years on keto and enjoy sticking to the diet because it works! My weight is now around the 67-68 kgm and has been for years. I walk and cycle long distances at reasonable speeds (6 kph for walking and 25 kph for cycling) and never run out of energy. I no longer bother health practitioners. I guess non-keto eaters have trouble understanding how people like my wife and I stick to our diet but once your body no longer requires sugar or carbs to be edible, it can enjoy unbelievably flavoursome meals - and only need two each day. I say to non-keto eaters you don’t know what you are missing!

I know right? It's the only time in my life I've been able to take weight off and keep it off. Before I was yo-yo dieting for most of my adult life. Now that I've discovered the low carb and keto lifestyles, I find that I can keep the weight off that I've lost (25 lb). Now I'm working on losing more. And I feel so good! In fact I know exactly when I've gone into ketosis because suddenly my energy level increases, my mood mellows, and I just get happy LOL. It's so noticeable that I'll be trying to get back into ketosis and I'll be going along at work or whatever, and suddenly my eyes open wide, and I get a big grin, and I go "Ketosis! Yippee!" And the ketostix always confirm it. Fortunately for me, I don't get the so-called keto flu. I just go straight from carb burner to the feel-good fat burner that most people get after they've gone through the keto flu part. My triglycerides are normal, my a1c is normal now, now I just need to get a little more weight off my joints and feet, and I'll be good. So glad I didn't listen to the naysayers. Whenever I hear their nonsense I just ask them, "So it would be healthier for me to go around 50 lb overweight? Okay then! Put a lid on it!"☺️

I play ice hockey for Indonesia, 35 years old, we were on lockdown for almost 2 years and all trainings went down the drain, gained alot of weight really fast and random diseases started occuring, it was brutal. A young, open-minded nutritionist swore on keto so I tried it last year despite all the misinformation back then (it is worse in 3rd world countries believe me). Anyway, in less then a year my weight went down to normal, now at 13% BF, in a few months all diseases went away, no cholesterol, no high blood pressure, clear mind, etc. I even outperform half of the U21 squad in terms of energy, power, sometimes speed. It is mindblowing to say the least, it's like getting a hard reset for your body. Now that I think about it, it makes sense after 35 years of eating too much carbs and sugar especially here where white rice is a staple for breakfast, lunch and dinner + sugars in 90% of all our sauces. My wife followed suit 3 months ago and never looked back, her skin looks better, her hair loss stopped, her cholesterol and BP were great. And I learned from my keto journey that articles criticizing keto are most likely paid by the food industry or connected to it, also willing to bet that they've probably never tried keto. Remember to people doubting keto: all of your knowledge about fat, trans fat, cholesterol are fabricated, it was made back in the 70s-90s by the food industry. And to those who "tried" keto and didn't work, then you simply did it wrong because keto is very straightforward: no sugar, no carbs period so that includes sauces, fruits, etc

I have PCOS and was obese so my doc advised me to lose weight. Told me if I didnt, she was gonna put me on maintenance meds, and I'm just on my early 30s. Of course I didn't go back for follow up check-up until I lost significant weight. I tried to lose weight but in 5 months, I barely scratched 2 kg. So I did keto and lost 7kg in just 2 months. My cycle became shorter and back to normal, I wasnt sick as often as before, and my skin got clearer. So I went back to my doc, happy about my results, and told her I'm doing Keto. She frowned, said Keto's gonna kill me, look at my LDL levels, it's off the charts. She tried so hard to convince me to switch from Keto to Vegan, said se and her husband are vegan and it's doing wonders for them, but told her, "nah, doc. Only Keto works for me, I'm sticking to it. If I do vegan, for sure I wont last more than 3 weeks and will just gain more weight". I even had to strike a bargain with her, told her anyway, I'd come back after a month, I'd alter some of my eating habits, coz I was surely eating too much saturated fats (hello daily BFC), and test my LDL again. Havent had the chance to get tested again yet, but i'm pretty confident my LDLs normal now. Cant wait to prove my doc wrong about keto.

@ David Garth I have been on a keto diet for 19 months, lost 73 pounds, and reversed all my health problems related to metabolic syndrome, but when I try to explain the benefits to others, even though they can see the change in me, they always refute my claims, by saying, " You are not a doctor." I have helped 2 overweight people with type 2, and one with Crohn's disease, but many people either don't care, or give me the " you aren't a doctor" argument. It is really frustrating, as I can't even get my own family to listen. I got a brother dying from Parkinson's and he still insists on eating a SAD diet.

This is very true. However, it seems the average person does not know how to look at the validity of the material being read nor of the sources being cited. However, high school classes do not teach this sort of advanced critical thinking let alone how to evaluate source material for factualness.

@@tonyawalters6606 Not all research is biased, but yes, much is. This is why when someone is doing their own research, they have to always take into account who conducted and sponsored the research pertaining to the report or article being read. As in this case, the report was sponsored by a group that had an obvious agenda and a bias against what they were reporting on. Then, one must look at what methodology (or methodologies if more than one was used was used.) Again, this shows factors such as whether the people writing the report conducted their own experiments, and if so, exactly how these were conducted. If they are compiling a metanalysis of data, then the individual studies being used need to be examined. All of these practices can help someone determine whether the data being used to show evidence is being deliberately picked to be misleading. Again, this was demonstrated in this video. Finally, one should always look into the sources provided to provide evidence of the statements being made- exactly as was done in this video. If no source is provided, automatically discard that information as it cannot be verified. Then, look into the sources that are provided, If it is not relevant, or if the material is misleading, again, discard that information, as it is unreliable. Continuing, I must admit the last part of my statement is somewhat redundant as it was partially stated above. Still, it bears repeating as this is how someone can see through a lot of bias in reports they are reading, and find the actual facts.

I laughed out loud at the 'vegtable' comment, in my head I was thinking "but I've never eaten more vegtables in my life than I do now I'm on Keto", and then you said it! I believe this is pretty key in why there is often confusion in many news report on the ketogenic diet and even in referenced studies where details of the 'type' of ketogenic diet used isn't given, or is ignored, and it's often not the version most of us are using - that isn't to say that more strict ketogenic diets don't also have their own place in certain circumstances e.g. epilepsy, some specific cancers etc.

I saw this headline a few days ago, and there were a lot of misleading statements in the articles: First, most of the articles I read on this take didn't even link the study at the end; they just paraphrased a lot of the content and had other doctors essentially agree with it. Second, they rehash the same claims that have been debunked by other studies concerning diabetes, calories, and cholesterol (ie, they say that keto is dangerous because it's a diet that raises LDL (bad) cholesterol, but as we've seen, LDL cholesterol doesn't have much practical bearing on cardiovascular health). Third, the statements made unrelated to the study are, frankly, opinionated and don't represent actual data from the study. This whole headline reeked of conflict of interest before I even got to the opening statement.

Similarly in the current era, you can't say you don't know how to use a computer like back in the 1990s. The minimum requirements for the knowledge is getting higher and higher. If you snooze, you lose. In this case, your health. Good Luck everybody. *I'm not against Vegans, but the group of vegan advocate that smear and twist facts just to influence to their benefits, shame on them.

😍 LOVE this! A full hands-on tutorial on how to detect bias in science. 👏 I would like to add that also fasting induces ketosis and temporary "insulin resistance" (IR). This is a physiological process as the body becomes better at burning fat than glucose in a low-insulin environment. For this reason, people who practice intermittent fasting should avoid breaking a fast with a high-carb meal (unless this is after a high-intensity fasted exercise thanks to the benefits of NIMGU). This is the only potential concern I have around the transient IR, but as Bret mentioned that's not a problem in the context of a keto diet when insulin spikes are avoided

Thank you. Thank you for a clear and concise response to those articles. I had 3 people reference those to me within 12 hours of the articles coming out about why I shouldn't be following a low carb lifestyle....I'm not completely keto (a few different fruits and tart cherry concentrate), but my macros fall within the keto guidelines most of the time. Having faced breast cancer two times in recent years, I took a hard look at my diet. The meds I'm currently on, and will not stop taking, cause joint pain, GI issues and a host of other side effects. After switching to this type of diet, I have little to no joint pain, the GI issues that are typical of my medication are almost nonexistent for me, I sleep well, I'm losing extra pounds that I've struggled to lose since these meds.... I eat cleaner, healthier foods with this lifestyle than any other "diet" I've followed before. I can't believe the people who knock it without researching it, or trying it. Your podcast has been one of my go to resources through this. I can't say thank you enough!!!

Part of the reason that many promoters of "the" ketogenic diet are vulnerable to straw-man criticisms like the ones in this article is their crude categorization of very disparate foods into "carbs" and "fats" as well as their failure to acknowledge that intermittent fasting itself is a type of ketogenic diet.

Standard American Diet: Meat, lots of carbs, lots of sugar, processed food, vegetables, grains, fruit (No problems in the medical field with this way of eating) Keto Diet: Meat, minimal carbs, no sugar, no processed foods, vegetables, seeds, some fruit.(Somehow THIS is 'disease promoting'?? Two reasons why people hate on the keto diet: 1. They are vegan or 2. They are hung up on the fact that keto is 'high fat' and therefore according to those that are still stuck in the nutritional advice of the 1970s and 1980s, 'fat is bad for you'.

The mainstream resistance to low carb is actually shameful. There are powerful lobbies against a perfectly natural way of eating. So It's up to YOU as an individual to do your own research and find resources such as DD, which is a great guide you can trust. But truly, once you go keto and lose like 60 pounds of FAT in one year, and feel fantastic (as I did) you know you can trust your body.

Thank you for this video Dr. Brett. This should be shared by everyone who watches this so that we can debunk the article that has the keto world all abuzz. As soon as I read it, I immediately discounted it because the mentioned studies were cherry picked or not expressed in their entirety. I knew so much more than the authors of this article because I have watch and listened to countless Diet Doctor and other’s videos and or podcasts. I sensed a real bias right away and felt it was sincerely lacking in actual facts. Very upsetting that many people will use this ridiculous article as an excuse to continue to eat cookies, cake, ice cream and “healthy whole grains” and discount people following a healthier lifestyle because it’s called keto.

I love your reviews and appreciate your hard work in debunking misleading studies pertaining the ketogenic diet. I would like to comment on the IR part, because I think Dr Ben Bikman explains it brilliantly. IR is a state of high insulin level in the blood where the tissues are not responding well to insulin. It could be pathological and physiological, but hyperinsulinemia is always present in IR. Symptoms of IR on ketogenic diet are symptoms of glucose intolerance when the body is accustomed to burn fat in a state of low blood insulin level, so oral glucose tolerance test is assessing what it says, glucose intolerance and not insulin resistance in that case. The term of IR is not appropriate for the symptoms of glucose intolerance during ketogenic diet.

Nice review. I switched to only beef and eggs and buy nothing with ingredients. I do consider fermenting vegetables and eating them while fasting for 7+ days, but I will never go back to cooking them with my meals and mixing them with meat. Beef + eggs + salt + (sometimes raw unpasturized butter) + water is perfect. Let the body do it's normal feed/famine cycle so that you can build a strong ketosis and nourish your brain, bones, and other organs. Get some sun, get some resistance training in, and remember to breathe slowly, especially when you are feeling stressed. Not keto, but it works nicely for me and fixed all the problems I was having eating plates full of broccoli an kale and rice and quinoi before...

Dr. Bret, I wonder if you consider writing the publication of the study you reviewed and contributing pointers to your video or including a summary. As you know, we are in a crisis with "Science" which wants to paint itself as a trusted authority when, in fact, most of what they state is mere supposition. And, as you point out, likely not just wrong but intentionally corrupt. I'm concerned for the truth in our modern world as some have seen opportunity to "take over" the truth business and paint everyone who doesn't agree with these truthsayers as heretics (or worse). I applaud you making this stern video (as I've been critical in past with some which have been milk-toast). Thanks for your work! Best regards, Mike

You can still be vegetarian and even vegan whilst following a low carb lifestyle (although it can be challenging). The problem here is that there are some scientists who act in a disingenuous fashion to line their own pockets or push a personal agenda. This sort of behavior happens in various situations. On the opposite end of the spectrum I've also seen some strange cultish comments and plain hateful comments from carnivore dieters about people who dare to eat some veggies. Extremism happens on both sides which is something you have to be on the lookout for.
