We often hear that we need to eat our "fruits and vegetables" to be healthy. But is that statement backed by science? You may be surprised to hear the answer. Don't get me wrong. Vegetables can absolutely be part of a healthy diet and most people should eat an array of veggies. But does this advice apply to everyone and is it a health requirement? Let's dig in to the science!

It’s bizarre how complicated this has all become. I grew up in the 1950’s. Most people were slim. The exact opposite of today. We ate bread, potatoes, peas, meat, vegetables, and occasional fruit. We ate fat. I never ate at a restaurant until I was 19. Take away food was fish and chips once a week. We ran around a lot. There wasn’t much else to do. We ate fat on toast with salt. In the 1970’s and 80’s we were told fat was bad and carbs were good. We had more sedentary entertainment. Processed foods became much more available. And then the obesity and diabetes epidemic began. We got richer, lazier, and fatter.

I have struggled with digestive issues for years, three weeks ago I completely cut out all plants and haven’t had any digestive problems. Bloating, nausea, pain, constipation gone within three days. Obviously I have a dysfunctional digestive system, I’m not advocating everyone does it, but for me it’s worked. So grateful for folks like you, before being exposed to the actual research I would have NEVER thought about excluding the “required” 30-40 grams of fiber from my diet. i still like to put it this way. plants are less digestible than animals and don't contain as wide of a nutrient profile. however, a lot of plants contain high amounts of certain nutrients, which can make them beneficial for supplementation. if you are lacking in certain nutrients, you can use plants high in that nutrient to try and make up for it. there's also different methods of making plant nutrition more bioavailable as well as reducing any antinutrients present in them. so no, you don't need them, but they can still help in their own way. (not to mention some of them even taste good ;D)

A year of Keto took care of the majority of my health issues, many I'd just caulked up to getting old, but, I remained on methotrexate for my RA. 30 days of eliminating all plant foods and tapered off methotrexate in 2 weeks. Another week and I tried a small salad and my hands cramped up terribly the next day. Another week and I again tried a small salad with the same results. I continued carnivore for a few more months and at that time was able to tolerate a salad with no problems. I now switch between carnivore and a meat heavy Keto.

I’ve eaten a plant-free diet for about two years now and have had almost no digestive issues. Prior to that I always ate lots and lots of fruits and vegetables thinking that they were so healthy and wondering why I was running to the bathroom five times a day. I had bloating, cramps, diarrhea, and gas all day every day. Since I have eliminated the plants, I have never felt better. Meat, eggs, and dairy is the way for me. It may not work for everybody else and sometimes it’s difficult to wrap your head around not having any produce, but it seems as though it works for quite a few people that have suffered from specific elements such as auto immune disease and gastrointestinal disease. I started this way of eating with Graves’ disease/hyperthyroidism and have come off of the anti-thyroid medication and my thyroid levels are all normal. I have also lost about 65 lbs.

Fruits are natural but are not eaten naturally. Some animals eat fruits in the fall to get fat and prepare for winter when food is scarce. We have it all year round. Also some fruits are modified to be very sweet. The fructose is processed in the liver and too much causes fatty liver disease (not mentioned)

It's also possible for a fruit to taste sweeter not because of an increase in sugar content but through a decrease in acid. Granny Smith and Golden Delicious are both apple varieties with a fairly equal sugar content, yet the Golden Delicious apple is far sweeter to the taste because it has a much lower acid content than the Granny Smith variety. Also, the ironic thing with grapes is that the higher sugar varieties tend to get used for wine-making whereas table grapes are typically bred to have less sugar and acid than wine grapes. When it comes to breeding affordable, mass-produced fruit, traits like crop yield, storage, and resistance to disease take far more precedence than a higher sugar content. If you see some inclusion of words like "sweet", "sugar", or "honey" in the name of a fruit, it's not as much of an indicator of a wildly higher sugar content as much as it's a marketing tactic. It's important to remember that when calories are equated, studies have shown that actual fat loss is pretty consistent among ALL types of diets and no one diet reigns supreme in that regard. Some people just don't like fruit that much and low-to-no-fruit diets pander to those palettes. When people are gaining significant amounts of fat on a diet full of highly processed junk and fast food, the last thing we need to tell those people is that the reason why they're gaining weight is because of the unprocessed, whole fruits they're likely rarely eating to begin with.
@donaldevanshennings7732
@donaldevanshennings7732 2 жыл бұрын
@@kevind4383 I agree with a lot of what you say but if you compare a granny smiths with a crab apple you can see the difference between a wild fruit and a cultivated one. The traits you mentioned are important but sweetness is very important to the consumer. No diet intending to benefit people includes processed foods. If that is your diet the maybe the nutrients from fruits could be important. The sugar in fruits is fructose and this is the worst sugar you can consume. Its also the main sweetener in high fructose corn syrup used in processed foods. Fructose can only be metabolised by your liver, resulting in fatty liver disease if you over consume. If you try to lose weight by cutting calories you will fail. To lose weight you need to appreciate how your body uses what you eat. When you eat carbs your insulin rises causing your body to stop burning fat and to store more fat. This is the most important thing to understand if dieting for weight loss. I have changed to a low carb high fat diet to improve my metabolic health. I am 69 and the same size I was at 18. My blood tests show a great improvement over last year. I'm sure you could get similar nutrition from a vegetarian or vegan type diet but that seems harder to do for me. I was on a mainly plant based diet until 9 months ago. I suspect you know this.

@kevind4383 2 жыл бұрын
@@donaldevanshennings7732 Thanks for the response. First and foremost, I'm glad you've been able to improve your health, that's also a path I've gone down in recent years. In May 2018 I was around 180 pounds (BMI over 28), by August 2019 I dipped under 130, and now I'm just under 120 and holding steady. However, the path I chose to go includes less dietary fat, more whole fruit, a reduction in calories and an increase in cardio. I was most definitely cutting calories during the four months in which I lost the bulk of the weight but ever since then I've just slowly trended down when others would be experiencing the "back up" part of the yo-yo. I simply made modifications in the carbs I consume, but it's almost always been swapping a simple carb out for a more complex one. I replaced things like french fries with grapes/melon/papaya, I eat more quinoa as opposed to white rice, and l almost always use chickpea pasta over wheat. People have been breeding fruit for a long time, yet the obesity epidemic is only 40-50 years old. Fruit has been bred to be sweeter for far longer than just the last 40-50 years, so if that does play a role, it's likely a minor one. Removing the fructose from the fruit and adding it to processed foods that also likely contain fat (unlike fruits that contain fructose, fat and fructose is a combo not seen in nature) is the main culprit, but it's orders of bad above being something like table grapes. For fat loss, the most important part of any {insert prefix here}-diet is the "diet" part, and that's just a fancy way of saying "cutting calories." Similar to when when the body is running off of carbs, the body has no reason to initiate lipolysis when dietary fat is sufficient enough to maintain a certain caloric threshold; it will only begin lipolysis when a caloric deficit is present. Don't get me wrong, having lowered blood sugar is certainly a good thing, and fat loss has been shown to have a positive impact on insulin tolerance, but the body can still lose fat even on a diet that includes a modest level of carbs. Insulin's primary role is to take blood glucose and convert it into glycogen for use in the liver and muscles, but the insulin won't convert glucose into adipose tissue if those glycogen reserves are low (like they would be after exercise or fasting.)

I appreciate the balance in your discussion points. I personally eat a meat-based diet including specific fruits (kiwifruit, bananas, occasional berries). My reasoning for kiwifruit and banana is that I can easily control my daily consumption levels. I have the occasional berry or cruciferous vegetables when it is offered at someone's home or at times when dining out, but those instances are minimal at most. I utilize these habits simply because they aid me in feeling my most optimal (no present or previous illnesses/deficiencies). I am able to maintain my physique year-round with minimal fluctuations. I have never struggled with cravings for anything not in my current plan, though I will not deny my childhood affinity for assorted pasta dishes. I am sharing this because I think it is important that those of us who choose a style of eating without preexisting issues often stay silent and do not contribute much to these discussions. And if others can relate, then maybe they will not feel at odds with or ashamed of their choices. If you read this far, thanks, and I hope this message resonates with you in some capacity.

healthy protein's & fats will do that, more so then what you just described! Plus its not about maintaining weight, other elements matter too... such as fat within your body, sugar spikes during the day, what your body chooses to run on ect... carbs is not a sufficient source, it burns quickly & converts to body fats, upping your internal fat stores, cholesterol ratio ect... if you don't burn it off! If your body can not handle high carb intake. (like when you were younger) Carbs are sugar & sugar is carbs, as is fructose... the only difference is the amount of fibre to counter act net carbs! Ie: subtracting fibre from total carbs to get net carbs of a food

Dr Bret explains this very well with real critical thinking. Notwithstanding avocado as being a fatty fruit, the anti-fat sentiment thereby promotes fruits and vegetables as a sacred healthy food group. Since most proteins are with meats, they will also be associated with fats. That leaves fruits, and vegetables, and to a lesseer degree grains - until the anti-carb movement is now starting to replace the anti-fat. I still like fruits in moderation although sugars are a concern for me, and I still believe in cruciferous vegetables to give me fiber and other macronutrients. But I look forward to seeing more research in this area. Great topic by Dr Bret.

You didn’t mention ketones and their roll in health/disease prevention. I “chase ketones” for their neuroprotective benefit (family history of Alzheimer’s disease) and, hopefully, to reduce the risk of the return of colon cancer (as per Thomas Seyfried). I also had all the traditional treatments. The higher consumption of plants could interfere with that, right? Would be very interested in your (and everyone’s) thoughts about this. I am currently more “ketovore” than straight carnivore.

Apparently the body creates all the glucose it requires via gluconeogenesis. That eliminates the need to eat carbohydrate. Dr. Georgia Ede has provided research/evidence that fruit and vegetables contain a collection of toxins that are either not found in meat, or are found in extremely small amounts. The body makes anti-oxidants, too, so it is unnecessary to consume plants for their "anti-oxidant" value. Meat with fat contains all the nutrients a human needs, in roughly the correct proportions, and it is easily digested by our extremely acidic stomach acid. We don't digest plants, bacteria digest plants and we digest their excrement. If you tolerate plants and don't have any health issues, consuming some plants is probably not going to harm you. When I switched to pure carnivore a collection of health issues cleared up very quickly and I lost 40 pounds over 4 months, then weight stabilized and has remained constant since.

@@zlmdragon., I'm not sure what you were trying to tell me through that doctor's advertisement. For 300,000 years our ancestors were carnivorous and occasionally ate some vegetation. Then, during the last 15,000 years, our species has been experimenting with plants and farming. The Maasai in Africa and the Inuit in Canada's north eat a diet that is almost entirely animal based. To their detriment, most of the Inuit now have Western food shipped to them, but that is a very recent problem. An almost exclusively animal based diet is what we evolved to eat, all other diets are, by comparison, short term fad diets. I didn't mention salt as it was not part of the question. Salt is very important and with any luck you will know when you have either consumed too little or too much. Also, salt comes as a single item, salt, or as a refined product, salt with anti-clumping agents. The anti-clumping agent is poisonous in any quantity, so it is better to avoid those products. Vitamin D is necessary for regulation of the immune system, which is critical at this time. Vitamin D can be made by exposing sunlight to skin but you need strong sunlight, from betwee the equator and 37°, if you live north or south of that, you probably will need some dietary source. Vitamin D is consumed in about 15 days so you have to keep making or eating it. Vitamin D toxicity is extremely difficult to achieve. Since vitamin D is stored in fat, the fatter you are, the more vitamin D you need. The RDA is for rickets, you need a much higher level to achieve a "sufficient" level in your body.

My grandmother lived in a massive home at that time, but somehow when I saw it as an adult it was much smaller. So those cases might have been smaller as well. Yuck In reality their diet is high in fish, pork, and vegetables cooked in lard. Until the last few decades rice was rare because of their location. The book would also have you believe that the people who invented pepperroni, salami, feta, mozzarella, suvloki and cheese sauces for vegetables eat a mostly plant based diet. The Ansel Keys school of science. Cherry Picking 101. Make it fit. Forget the facts. I am personally a person who does fantastic on dairy. My genetics. If I am ill, I make real egg nog. Something my mother always gave me when ill as a child. It works for me. Always feel better. And there is nothing nicer than when the cows get outside in the spring and eat the fresh clover. You can taste it in the milk. You can also tell the difference between a cow fed hay in the winter and a cow fed the left over sludge from human crops. I have lived in a lot of areas. I understand in P.E.I. they feed them potatoes in the winter. I have never had the milk from there, so would have no idea how that effects taste. And as it turns out if you have looked at Allen Savorys work, they fix the damage of crop based agriculture. Add carbon to the soil. Fixes its ability of soil to retain water. And unlike plant based agriculture do not cause red tides and desertification. But I am much better off keeping the grains out of my diet. Not just the gluten ones, which really do me harm. Also need to keep the lugumes out as well. Not just the dried ones, or peanuts. Even things like green and yellow beans. I love them, but they are very abusive back. I never got sick even once in my 52 years of life. neither my 46 years old bother, nor my parents who also never eat vegetables. our families live at least 90-95 years old and are top fit physically and mentally to the last day of their life. they simply die out of very old age. I did go for 30 days vegan challenge couple of years ago, to please some people and to check it out of for myself. I had zero energy to train or to work. I felt like my cognitive capabilities were severely impaired, I wanted to sleep all day to preserve the energy. I felt dizzy and unwell. bloated, farting uncomfortably all day. I also had diarrhea the whole month. I never managed to form a solid stool in the vegan month. I actually could hardly swallow the vegetables, I had vomiting reflexes while eating vegetables. no matter how much I ate, I was always hungry and weak. I feel like eating vegetables is a form of punishment. after a month of vegan punishment, it took me 72 hours of eating raw meat, to fully recover from being malnourished and unwell. I also drink a lot of real cow fresh milk, and I eat 4-6 eggs a day. I drink 1 real ground beans coffee in the morning without sugar or milk. I drink water with real lemon juice squeezed into it (half lemon for 1.5 liters of water). there you have it. go vegan! NOT!

All I found from studies that with the more fruit the better. Yet no veggies = bad. Much veggies = also bad. Probably due to pesticide load. But fruits usually do good, even for diabetics. Sugar isn't rly any issue. Fructose isolated obviously is. As much as I personally love low carb. The data isn't that in favor of it at all

siriusisastar asked and I repeat How about exploring the plant defenses/anti-nutrients found in most vegetables such as phytic acid, oxalates, lectins and other endocrine disruptors? Also, the lack of bio-availability with most. More and more data is skewing this way.

After eating "normal" balanced diet for 60 years my outbreak to oxalate and lectins forced me to stop eating especially green vegetables. A painful and serious health crash, my main meal is all carnivore. Thankyou for your video. I'm sure it's not some can & some can't do vegetables, It's how long your body takes to sarcoma to the toxins in vegetables & fruit

When I was eating the SAD American diet I was eating lots of vegetables. Always has irritable bowel problems bloating and constipation. I developed prediabetes and so I switched to ketovore elimination diet. I eat mostly meats eggs cheese. Cut out every thing else. My health improves within weeks, bloating gone ! irritable bowel symptoms gone! I started introducing some grains vegetables and started to get bloating again. found out i can only eat asparagus artichokes and a few low sugar berries. Absolutely no grains, or high suger fruits or high fiber hi oxalate vegetables. I feel my best on a ketovore diet and my blood tests are excellent.

I can count the number of times I've eaten fruit (Not including fruit culinarily called vegetables) over the past decade on my fingers. Not a lot of times... and I'm doing well. Don't really need natures candy bars.

I love berries in season. Even the odd bit of homemade apple sauce on pork. Pineapple on the ham at Easter great. I limit fruit when I do have it. I consider a treat, nothing else. I have also gone months without fruit and do just fine.

I went carnivore about 16 weeks ago. It took 12 weeks on carnivore for the IBS-D to stop. I added almonds into my diet and my IBS-D returned. Back to carnivore. I am testing re-introducing foods now, so far meat/eggs/dairy are things I can handle. I went 13 years with IBS-D and the specialists and medications could not help. They would have me stop eating one thing (say eggs) for 2 weeks to see if that helped. Turns out it was all a total waste of time as it never would have been long enough or strict enough to determine anything of value. So far on carnivore, I have not been this healthy in decades and my research shows meat only diets give me 100% of all my RDA for all vitamins and nutrients (vit C is sometimes low, but sometimes I get over 100% of rda as well - way more than a carnivore needs - I mix in some spleen/thymus/testicles/lungs into the diet to get more than enough Vit C overall). There are certainly plant foods (like Almonds or sunflower seeds for vit E) that have much easier and efficient access to large amounts of some vitamins (C,E,B9) and I would prefer some more flexibility in my diet, but it hardly seems like it is necessary to add in plants (of course, who would not want to add in some chocolate every once in a while!).

@@krayziejerry As noted, I had severe diarrhea for 13 years. I have zero constipation and my severe diarrhea has been cured. I go once or twice a day. I can still have loose stools, or hard pellets range, depending on the amount of fat I eat the day before. FYI, fiber causes constipation, a lack of fiber returns your bowels to optimum.

Fruit has not the toxins of many vegetables so I think replacing fruit with vegetables can be harmful. Plants don't defend fruit with toxins because animals eating them help spreading the seeds. Still they need to be eaten with moderation.

Some fruits have poisons like deadly nightshade for example. Maybe the plant only wants certain animals to eat them. Modern fruits have been selectively bred to increase the amount of fructose.
