The ketogenic diet is all the rage, but is it really ok to eat so much fat..? Well, depending on the rest of your gut function, microbiota, and nutritional intake, the answer might be no! Unfortunately, high-fat diets are well known to cause leaky gut, metabolic endotoxemia (think: leaky gut on steroids), mast cell degranulation, and a decrease in Bifidobacteria (good bacteria) and an increase in Proteobacteria (bad bacteria).
Some research:
- Keto aggravates colitis and increases Proteobacteria (bad guys)
- pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34542...
- Keto increases Proteobacteria (bad guys) and reduces Bifidobacteria (good guys)
- pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30701...
- Increase in Enterobacteriaceae (bad guys) and decreased Bifidobacteria (good guys)
- pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34180...

I did a high fiber veggie full keto for 6 months, however it was not aimed at staying in ketosis and instead I prioritized food diversity (tons of nuts and seeds and diverse veggies). I think it's all about how you do it. There are very strict and not nutrient dense versions of keto. For me, I noticed massive improvements in mental health, cognition, focus, energy, and better sleep. It massively helped sibo symptoms: bloating, constipation, etc.. One caveat is that candida survived through all that and initially subsided but came back with a vengeance after 6 months. Once I fixed that, I was able to have the metabolic flexibility to weave in and out of keto/low carb. I don't think keto should be seen as a fad but rather a short term medicinal treatment (it's in studies for treating schizophrenia and i've seen this in clients myself), or can be healthy long term option when done right.

I started keto recently for my mental health issues after reading the work of Dr. Christopher Palmer and Dr. Georgia Ede on the ketogenic diet’s potential to put all kinds of mental health conditions into remission. I was a keto hater for a long time and very skeptical of this, but it seemed really promising to me when I heard what they had to say. I did start to notice mood and energy benefits soon after starting, but I’ll admit that I am conflicted about how it requires me to restrict fruits and vegetables and curious about the effect that might have on gut health as that is very important to me. Ultimately, I am desperate to do whatever I can to find relief from my mental illnesses that I have struggled with for almost 20 years despite eating what most would consider a healthy diet, exercising, and taking various medications for it. I don’t know if it is right or not, everyone is saying different things, but I have followed most conventional advice for mental health and not found substantial or long-lasting relief, so I am giving it a try.

I think You are on the right track. You have given the AMA time & trial to heal You; time to try something else 🤩 You realize they get rich giving You medications that require more medications to cover the symptoms of the current medications? 🤔 All the while NEVER actually healing Anything? 🤨 That's what I don't understand; if taking this or that actually ever healed You - Great. 🎉 But how many are taking 1, 2 or 3 'meds' for acid reflux, high blood pressure etc but it Never goes away?!? 🤔😱 Dr Eric Westman is a research scientist & breaks down a lot of these type things & I will be sending him this video to see of he will break it down for us. Dr Ben Bikman is also a research scientist & has a lot of helpful data driven scientific facts. Highly recommend Dr Sten Ekberg. He is a Very great Dr with easy to understand, clear low carb instructions, science, & data where there is no decrease in consumption of veggies & advocates whole foods & eating of certain lower carb fruits. ANYTHING can be keto; it's the dose that makes the poison. She is not allowing for food & sugar addicts - of which I am one. I am Not a moderator. I can Not eat 1 cookie or chip or donut & stop. NO! I eat The Whole Enchilada & look for More!! I Must abstain from sugar, dairy & grains or my weight goes up literally daily! OUCH! I Finally found a lifestyle that allows me massive variety & as much as I want to eat & my brain fog has lifted, my moods are more stable, weight is stable. I am happy & feel better. I do have treats, I just need to make them low carb using alternative ingredients & natural non-nutritive sweeteners. I went 1 mo with zero sweeteners & my taste buds changed so I hardly need any sweetener & things are sweet enough for me now. It's a Miracle!! I am SO happy! 😍 They say - Don't eat protein for a while & You will die. Don't eat fat for a while & You will die. Don't eat carbs & You will live healthy. I think You owe it to Yourself to work slowly toward a clean, whole fresh food, low carb lifestyle & see how much better You feel. 😍

Dr Sten Ekberg here on yt gives extensive lists in many of his videos that cover many. many types of veggies & fruits etc that are clean healthy lower carb options. He gives meal ideas & even shares what he eats while covering scientific studies & data the whole time. Excellent source for Truth. Also Indigo Nili here on yt has amazing recipes & makes The Best virtually no carb bread EVER! She also has variety in her diet. Steve at Serious Keto says he eats more fresh veggies now that he ever did. Keto done right emphasizes fresh whole, unprocessed, clean foods with lower carbs over processed franken foods that are nothing but carbs & sugars. Now that I look at what most ppl eat most of the time, their whole diet is wheat, dairy & sugar as the bulk of every meal almost exclusively. Look around.... is that really working? It is for big pharma for sure! Off my soap box now 🤪 I truly hope You find relief from Your struggles & I believe it will be found in a healthy, varied low carb lifestyle free of sugars, grains & unfortunately for me dairy is one of the key things to avoid; very inflammatory & addictive for me. Listen to Your body, it will tell You over a month or so trial of this or that how it feels about things. You are on the right road!! You are worth the work! 😍

I started carnivore last week after a colonoscopy found microscopic colitis. Things were really inflamed. I am not psyched about eating this way, but I also had salicylate show up on the MRT. Up until then I was eating organic vegetables, no gluten, berries, prebiotic fibers, and organic extra virgin olive oil. All things that are healthy but high in salicylate. So carnivore will give my hyped immune system a break and hopefully shed a few sensitivities while focusing on healing mucosa. Hopeful but frustrated.

I've been eating keto for about 2 months now with intermittent fasting the last couple weeks. I wouldn't call the diet "high fat". High protein, yes. Tudca increases bile. I take one in the morning. I feel great since on the diet. Inflammation in my body is way down. I can finally breath through my nose at night.

According to Ayurveda and many ancestral dietitians, especially ghee and butter are healthy fats for us and because of the butyrate content also very beneficial for the gut microbes, even the butyrate content is marginal from what I have seen. I did a bit of research and it seems like besides raising LDL cholesterol, saturated fat, especially palmitic is linked to all sorts of health issues and diseases and palmitic acid also induces leaky gut and alter the gut microbiome and it is the fatty acid that raises LDL cholesterol the most. That’s what study’s have shown. I don’t have any degree and I’m not a dietitian and I have no idea if I can interpret science correctly. I’m just interested in nutrition and I also don’t have a bias towards a specific diet whether from a health or ethical standpoint. I ask myself why these people claim that ghee and butter are healthy fats when palmitic acid is the primary fatty acid in both of them and when both fats are the fats with highest amount of saturated fat and the highest amount of palmitic acid right after palm and coconut oil? I would really appreciate if someone clarify and explain if I’m wrong or right, where these claims come from and seperate fact from fiction. Thank you very much

Healthy saturated fats from well raised animals are not bad for you. The sugar industry started its huge campaign of unfairly villainizing fat back in the 80s and most people still believe that BS today. Humans have eaten and evolved with animal fats since the dawn of man. Your brain, hormones, gut all need healthy saturated fats. Big agriculture, Kellogg, frito-lay, etc are not watching out for your health.

Loved your video. I have had a painful auto immune disease for nearly 10 years. I tried everything through modern medicine. In desperation I turned to diet and was vegetarian and then vegan for a few years with no improvement. Finally I landed on the Gaps diet a few years ago. Almost straight away I was in the ER with gall bladder attacks. I cut back on the fats for a bit and the gall bladder settled down - preventing my doctor taking it out. A scan showed 4 small stones. It seemed the 'no fat' diet had made my gall bladder collect the bile it didn't need to secrete. I had to try something to relieve my auto immune condition which had me on the couch most of the day. I discovered Carnivore which others have used on auto immune disease with success. I followed a mostly carnivore for the last two years and have had incredible success with no pain. I recently have gall bladder pain and now worried that I'll lose my GB.

I'm very curious if a Carnivore diet with proper homemade milk kefir could be a way to begin rebuilding the gut after years of metabolic dysfunction. Then gradually introduce more specific plant foods and fruits as fit. Do we really have to "eat the rainbow" to stay healthy. Considering we didn't have such a wide array of foods before international transportation took roots, and people were more healthy back then. Is it maybe enough to eat locally, seasonally and proper foods. With fermentable foods to keep the gut population up?

@@melissak7798 Man I'm really sorry to hear that :( Did you try no-plants GAPS? Maybe look into that. It's designed to heal leaky gut and to get moving over to more foods as it heals. I already have HI, MCAS, CIRS etc from mold exposure 14 years ago, CPTSD +++. And I've tried going more vegeterian with increased amounts of starches and fiber from legumes, nuts, starchy-vegetables, etc. More gut feeding food and it has not worked. If anything it made me worse. Even though I went incredibly slow and tried to build up over months. So I don't know what to believe any more. It's why I'm gravitating towards trying no-plants GAPS Carnivore.

I have been doing keto since 2015. I am wondering if current carnivore-ish diet ruined my gut microbiome. I say -ish because I eat beef 2-3 times a day and rest of the days I eat seafood, chicken. I do use ghee everyday for fat. I do not get much fiber unless I eat raspberries which is not everyday. I noticed for about 6 months that my stool is really dark brown. It used to be medium I guess. I had introduced sauerkraut and organic greek yogurt into my diet. Since then every time I eat or drink water, my stomach makes noises for a while. I stopped the sauerkraut & yogurt once this started. I do not have diarrhea often. May be once every 2-3 weeks. I have no clue if there is something seriously wrong. What is the way I can get more fiber into my diet? I am more likely to eat fruit compared to vegetables.

I largely agree with this -- well said. When I'm working with clients and feel the need to use "a diet" for regaining metabolic control, weight loss, etc., I have found the Slow Carb Diet (Tim Ferriss) to be a great compromise between low carb and the need for keeping fiber in the diet. I warn against slipping into a total keto template (must eat the beans) and I also provide instructions for using the veggie mashup with the Slow Carb Diet in order to retain plant food diversity. This approach has worked VERY well -- almost always better than keto/low-carb. Easier to follow, and no constipation. 😂 I do use keto in therapeutic contexts but discourage it as a general approach.

Encouraging people to eat junk food like grain and seed oil laden treats is not a good recommendation. SIBO (both methane and hydrogen) is made substantially worse by lots of sugar and glyphosate-y grains. I know fruits and veg are more of a debated area depending on keto/paleo/carnivore but I think anyone with real passion in nutrition can agree that grains, seed oils, added sugars are bad no matter what. Normally I like your videos but this one was a bit off the mark.

You really need to look into Andreas Moritz body of work concerning Liver and Gallbladder Flushing protocol before coming down on Keto-carnivore. The root cause for bile malabsorbtion, etc could very well be linked to blocked &/or bile ducts stones of various types, not just the calcium oxalate stones that show up on scans. Many times there are dead parasites enveloped inside these stones when cross-section examined, which leads to a person having a possible parasitic infection. Parasites as well as candida and other pathogens make their own oxalates, btw, as part of their biofilms. Heavy metals also can play a part in gut dysbiosis and oxalate formation. Genetics like having the MTHFR Gene Mutation can also affect the way your gut behaves (especially your liver) when environmental damage occurs in your body, like overuse of antibiotics.

The “stones” described in that book are basically soap made by passing so much olive oil through your low PH intestines at once. There is absolutely no physical way stones of that size could fit through a bile duct. The book is made up. I was disappointed too when I learned this, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Does this person know what she’s talking about ? - you can eat all the greens broccoli , cauliflowers , spinach , kales anything really - Avocados and olives are great prebiotics - who said you can’t have fruits ? You can have things like blueberries - should we talk about the fibers in nuts high in GOS ? - what about fibers in coconut ? So all you ll be missing is sugar , grains , gluten and some starch mhhhh right … This the typical one sided propaganda video to attract audience and attention which just show bias without giving full depth to such complex topic like diet and nutrition. Not sure what the aim of this video is but is failing in the premises of giving useful information.

And this is the kind of response given by a person who, rather than simply following a diet that works for them, saw it necessary to track down and negatively comment on a video that offers and alternate opinion (an opinion, by the way, based on actual study and clinical observation rather than one based no doubt on watching KZbin videos). Perhaps if you watched and carefully listened to what she had to say, you would find that many of your objections (re: fibre on the keto diet, for example) are actually addressed in Dr. DiNezza here. Disparaging her this way in an anonymous comment speaks more to your shortcomings as a person than it does to her competence as a practitioner.

@@Eridorrr It is not just a matter of disagreement, nor is it 'healthy' to disagree on this topic. the issue is far more complex. the honesty of anybody who counts only misses but not hits is, understandably, called into question here. as the OP correctly pointed out, neglecting very key factors, which is certainly not the first time noticed on this channel, led to the full cup effect. besides, the self-proclaimed queen employs bad science to defend her position, in which, in my opinion, she profoundly fails. her bias, but not herself as her motives are not yet clear enough, should be penalized in this way: by unsubscribing.

Uh oh, you will anger many keto and carnivore fanatics with this one. I thought keto was extreme (you should never take away one of the macros or drop it extremely. It’s just common sense), but then carnivore has now become like a religion and I am shocked people actually eat like that long-term. I get people trying these diets to ease symptoms of a messed up gut, but it’s just a band aid and isn’t addressing the root issues as to why they struggle with things like fiber and carbs. The lack of understanding how important fiber and carbs and veggies are sort of blows my mind. There are so many variables these days as to why people struggle with veggies and carbs and fruit but everyone seems to immediately jump to “those foods are bad and we shouldn’t be eating them.” The problem is usually the gut (or genetics), not the food. All the blue zone areas show how important healthy carbs actually are.
