What people mean when they say calories don't matter is that on keto your hunger is suppressed to the point where counting calories is usually not a necessary part of the strategy. If you just eat until you are satisfied it is unlikely you will put on weight.

I get what you’re trying to do... but I feel your video is unclear. Maybe try placing a graphic that says “myth” before giving your “fact” to separate the skit from the “real talk” portion of your video. People new to keto May find this video very confusing because they aren’t aware of the myths. Maybe try adding the blue filter over the myth portion and adding a gold/warm filter over the truth. Not everyone has hormone issues though ffs . I'm 55 and have been in full on menopause for a year . Guess what ? I'v lost 100 lbs in 6 months eating keto And I'm totally counting calories . I tried the not counting thing the 1st few weeks doing keto , only eating VERY strict keto foods too so don't even ask if I was eating the right foods lol, because I was and am 100%, I still over ate and gained weight. So the hormone thing does not apply to everyone and probably not to most Those of us who have significant weight to lose usually have problems with portion control and binge eating and eating when not even hungry. so telling us to not count calories is ignorant to put it nicely. Keto does not work the same on everyone and telling people to not count calories is really not wise .Nor does it work for everyone . That not counting calories thing may work for people who only have a few lbs o lose and don't really over eat to begin with But it doesn't work for Many many people who cant control their eating or the amounts

I disagree with the counting of calories. If you're doing Keto correctly, you won't eat as much as you want because you'll be too full. I stopped counting calories when I started keto 2.5yrs ago. In fact, after fasting we should feast- get in a lot of Nutritional foods. Because calories are not equally burned, since the body uses it for everything that keeps you alive, it's misleading to tell people to keep counting calories. That's why I love keto, it frees us from the bondage of counting calories. We have more control over an intake of macronutrients and how it affects our bodies, verses controlling how calories are used (we can't make our bodies burn calories in our gut only for example). Dr. Jason Fung explains it beautifully and yet, you had no scientific or medical reason to back your argument about counting calories on Keto. It's a really easy lifestyle, let's not complicate it.

I don't believe they said "count calories", they said "calories matter". Because of thermodynamics, that's a fact. If your metabolic rate for your status is 2,000 calories and you're eating 2,250, it doesn't matter whether you're on keto or not, you WILL gain a pound a week. What people are probably unrealistic about is the number of calories they were eating *prior* to doing the keto diet.

I don't count calories, but I've never been extremely overweight , i think maybe people that have eating disorders or mental hang ups about food may need to watch their caloric intake. Yeah, but you make it sound misleading. He says that as his opening sales pitch all the time, but when he gets down into the details he admits the calories are fundamental in a couple of videos. It's fine though, because people tend to be in a defecit anyway with the lower hunger on a keto diet. It's not so much that calories don't matter, just that you don't tend to need to worry about them.

I really think it depends on the individual and the chemistry of their body, and it can change for an individual. I started with Atkins years ago and was very lazy/sloppy with it and the weight and inches still peeled off like magic for me. Those were the days! Not so much anymore. I had several catastrophic failures over the past five years because I got frustrated that things were not working the same as they used to. Even when I became super strict and counted everything I wasn't losing and would sometimes gain.This is partly due to the fact that I'm not a gym rat and even though I do 20 min of calisthenics and walking, I sit at a desk about six hours at work and more on the computer at home. I finally gave in and went to I.F. with the same amount of daily calories and BANG what an improvement! Not only in the weight and inches loss but in the way my body functioned and the way I felt. I even FEEL like doing more exercising. None of that is based on scientific evidence or anything I can directly measure as a correlation. It's completely subjective for me, but there does seem to be a positive effect for me...I can't speak for anyone else though, and I'm not suggesting it has the same effect for everyone. I'd like to hear from Megha and Matt in another ten or fifteen years and see if their opinion changes about I.F.

I love watching your videos, that being on some of the points you raised I disagree with. The body's physiology does not know or understand anything about calories, it only understands micro-nutrients, Fats, Protein and Carbs. This is a known fact and has been studied in depth by Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. Eric Westman, Dr. Eric Berg. These gentlemen are doctor's who specialize the Ketogenic Protocol. They have helped hundreds of patients and the first thing they are adamant about is not to count calories.

Telling obese people who eat 5000 or 10,000 calories a day its ok to NOT count calories is setting many up for failure, I can eat the same amount of calories in steak bacon and broccoli with butter as I can Non keto food Thus resulting in not losing weight . I restrict my calories to 1200 to 1400 a day and have lost 100 lbs in the past 6 months eating keto . I tried the no calorie counting thing the 1st 3 or 4 weeks and gained weight So that "dont worry about calories" does not work for everyone . and BTW Im 55 and have been in full blown menopause for a year or more So I call BS on the hormone thing too . Good news is I'm pretty sure Im done with menopause now lol Seriously though Keto doesn't work the same for everyone. Many obese people like myself have no control with amounts when eating, We eat out of boredom, and eat emotionally. So telling us to not count calories can be a slippery slope
@johnnyrayellison2724
@johnnyrayellison2724 6 жыл бұрын
From my experience the people who eat 5000 to 10000 calories a day are usually getting most of it from Carbs. Carbs affect your insulin levels, which can cause carb cravings and overeating. Fat calories do in fact cause satiety much quicker and feel fuller. Also you can loose weight because your in a calorie deficit, but that is not sustainable for the long term. I recommend reading the Obesity Code, by Jason Fung MD, that gives a lot of the science behind removing carbs from you diet as your primary means of becoming healthier, not just loosing weight.

No way in hell I could have lost 110 lb in 6 months without counting calories and staying under 1500 . maybe that not counting calories thing works for people who don't binge eat or are already thin But it wont work for many morbidly obese

I’m glad you pointed out that people doing keto for therapeutic/medical reasons do need to keep track of their ketone level. I do keto for epilepsy and aim for 86-87% fat, 9-11% protein, and 3-4% carbs. Weight loss isn’t a goal, but otherwise I agree. I started at a lower ratio, (basically lower fat and higher protein), and lost weight, but it didn’t help my seizures until I upped the fat to the 80 percentile.

Fasting cures a lot more than metabolic issues. It's kinda ridiculous how much it cures compared to what were told to do. Even simple acne is mostly cleared up by fasting. Hormone issues, general body pain etc. Fasting is for everyone as it's literally normal for us to do for our body composition.

Also your body on keto burns more calories using fat for fuel than using carbs or sugar, IF also has a considerable increase in burning fat and calories, also calories are not created equal and calories from low carb foods and calories from sugar free foods get burned easier and more efficiently

Same. Especially for people with diabetes or prediabetes. Fasting heals you by lowering insulin for long periods of time, which will help those people lose weight. If you are already thin and healthy it may not matter as much, but that is not true for a lot of us. You don't lose weight to get healthy, you get healthy to lose weight. And Fasting gets you healthy and makes you lose weight. You guys may have lost me with this.

@@Twiznoy They are not trolling intermittent fasting as such but they simply saying calories still matter in that if you eat 2000 calories a day and fast, and I eat 2000 calories and dont fast, there would not be any difference in terms of weight loss. I am on OMAD, and totally agree with them. When I started with 2 meals a day intermittent fasting on a 6hr eating window doing strictly 20,000 steps a day without fail which consisted of 1 hour non-stop running first thing in the morning, I would eat more during the 6hr eating window than when I was not fasting. When I realized after 3 months that I was not loosing weight, I gave up sugar including fruits, and ate very low carb foods (lettuce, cauliflower and broccoli) and more fats (fatty nuts and seeds, fatty meats, avocado, lots of eggs, MCT oil, extra virgin olive oil). I adopted a low carb-high fat diet with zero fruits but its not a keto diet since I do not track my macros or strictly count calories. I already know what is healthy/unhealthy and no longer crave junk foods. I eat less than 2 handfuls of a meal. I used to suffer from brain fog and migraines but they have been gone since I started the diet. I always have tons of energy, clarity of mind and my skin is even prettier. I do not take any supplements but intend to start soon. My everyday drink is lemon water with himalayan salt, apple cider vinegar, and erythritol to sweeten and 1 cup of coffee with half a teaspoon of cinnamon, half a teaspoon of turmeric, 2 tablespoons of MCT oil and 2 tablespoons of ghee or olive oil) with my meal. I eat at 12 midday and I am full until the next day, and have been loosing weight like crazy. I started the diet in June 2019 and I have lost 55 pounds. My body is getting trimmer and my tummy is super flat. I have even stopped running. I walk a lot at work. I watch what I eat since calories definitely matter.

One thing I dont think a lot of people have mentioned when it comes to starting off is the fact that excess carbs and protein dehydrate you. Breads and starches especially are very absorbent of any liquids surrounding them in the stomach, hence why its so tempting to reach for that nearby soda. Protein molecules generally need liquid to unwind and excess nitrogen from eating too much of it often causes kidney pain that's confused for thirst. All sodas (including diet ones) are heavily carbonated, which causes it to zip through the body and quench thirst quicker than anything else. That's why it can be so tempting to get one when you get say a chicken sandwich from the drive through; the bread, salt and lean chicken leave you feeling parched unless you get something that has added fat (say guacamole and bacon) and fills your hunger before you get to that point. Diet sodas are problematic to me because they'll ease the discomfort of eating foods you shouldnt be eating and enable you to eat them more. Drinks like tea and lemonade actually have helped wean me away from those kind of drinks and thus sodas as a whole. When you get into the swing of what you should be eating (less carbs, more rich meat like chicken thighs instead of chicken breast and wings) then you can wean off of those too.

I have a different take on “calories don’t matter”. On every diet I’ve ever tried, my struggle was not getting ENOUGH calories. I ate lots of veggies and don’t eat gluten so I have very few pastas, breads, and other high calorie junk foods. I counted ww points and calories, etc but always struggled to get to my calorie goals. I was always well under. With keto, I’ve been hitting my macro mark for the last two months but I’ve continued to focus on hitting my calorie mark… EVEN IF I WASN’T HUNGRY! This is what I’ve always been told. As of yesterday, I heard you say that my hunger would go down when my body was being fed the right way. Of course this happened a few weeks ago but I was eating when I wasn’t hungry to hit a calorie goal. My current theory is that if every meal I eat is in the proper macro percentages, the calories don’t matter…. As long as I eat when I’m actually hungry and stop when I’m satisfied. I am only pointing this out because, while it seems obvious, it goes against what many of us have been told up until now.

Im the not keto food guy , why? Because the carb amount you consume in a day is way less important than the Glycemic Index , you can eat 30 carbs of almonds or cream and you have way more chances to stay keto than 30g of dextrose or maltodextrin they Glycemic Index is higher than sugar or glucose itself.

It's not that calories don't matter, but metabolic rate is partially determined by caloric intake, a feedback loop. You got it only partially right when you brought up the 100-calorie advantage for keto diets. The part you missed is the hormonal effect for those with extreme insulin resistance. For those folks with insulin levels always high (i.e., 30-40+), it will be nearly impossible to lose weight. Restricting calories will result in the body lowering basal metabolic rate, which reduces or eliminates the caloric deficit. Eating keto allows insulin to go low enough so that BMR doesn't have to drop.

So something that spikes your blood sugar just like sugar does is ok? I thought one of the main points to keto is to keep blood sugar stable so it doesn't spike insulin which causes fat storage. Dextrose is horrible, many people who are diabetic have issues with this ingredient because of the glusose response. Disagreeing with the dextrose thing completely. It's sugar without being sugar. I would suggest anyone who eats dextrose to test their blood sugar after to see how they respond. I love your videos and admire your mission, but I've been finding that a lot of your videos are more opinion based and less science based.. Like how you said sucralose is ok in a previous video, without mentioning anything about the research that shows how sucralose effects gut bacteria. If your videos were more like how High Intensity Heallh's videos are, and much more science based, and not opinion based, it would just be better for everyone.

Its the same as many people thinking its ok to eat as much cheese or heavy cream as they want then wonder why they aren't losing weight. Just because the label says 0 carbs per serving does not mean there are 0 carbs . food companies are not required to put carb or sugar content on labels if grams are under 0.6 g per serving . All cheese and all heavy cream has 0.4 to 0.5 per ounce or serving lol. and those carbs in both are lactose which is sugar . All they are saying is its ok if you eat certain things once in a while that have these things in them , they aren't saying its ok to eat every day, all day at all

But my calories are perhaps 900. is this bad, should I make myself eat more. And you would not believe the arguments that happen when all the schools of thought on Keto come together for this question. It's nearly half and half that... No, do not over eat! Yes! I agree with you on calories. As someone that has been morbidly obese, 500+ lbs, I can easily over eat. I have to count my calories and stay under a certain # if I want to lose weight. I love Jason Wittrock and everything he does but he just doesn't know what its like to have an eating problem or a subpar metabolism. Telling a morbidly obese person that calories doesn't matter and just eat intuitively isn't going to work for the vast majority. I can still be completely full, but still want to go eat more and from what I can tell, a lot of other people are like this too. The are more factors to consider: stress, depression, comfort eating, etc. Jason is right that there is no magic formula to tell me how many calories I am burning at any given time, but there are formulas that can get you an idea of what you are burning and taking in and can adjust accordingly. Its not perfect, but it does work. I have lost 280 lbs counting calories on keto. I am almost at my weight goal and I am still counting. When I get to my goal and feel comfortable there for awhile, maybe I can stop counting and eat more intuitively.

Sounds like if you want to eat more after you are full you might want to seek advice from a doctor there may be some issues from your childhood you are suppressing, Exercise builds metabolism , so if you stick with keto, but regulate your fat intake then your body will go burn up your fat cells, try drinking a glass of water or eating a low carb salad before your meals and cut the fat. Eat high fiber.

I heard a joke on the radio the other day: How can you tell if someone is on a keto diet? Don’t worry... they’ll tell you.

This was my least favorite video that I've seen from you. I get sarcasm.. but it's more helpful to state the myth and counter it. Your sarcasm bled into your explanations and I really didnt know what the final message was on ANY of your tips 🤷‍♀️
