My wife taught me most of this. She went with me to buy my replacement car for my junker. We told the dealer "we will take it" and went to finance where all this stuff started. She let him finish the spiel and state the finance rate of about 12%. She responded and said "No, the rate will be 4.5%" His jaw dropped and asked what she meant. She replied "I'm pre approved with my credit union, are you going to match, beat, or take a check?". Then she blasted off most of the fees. She was fantastic.

I had to do that, and my company paid the shop that I chose, and then went after the at-fault company for the money. BTW, the at-fault company gave me a check for $678. I did not cash it. Hi Kevin, here's another fee to add to your list. Back in 2002 I was trying to negotiate the purchase of a 2003 Ford Expedition from Redlands Ford. I had the gone through the process and was ready to close when they refused to remove their $300 "Alarm/Disabler Fee" for a device they added to all their vehicles at the time due to vehicles being stolen off their lot. The salesperson stated: "The Alarm has kept your car safe for you so you need to pay it. I refused. Then they agreed to remove the device and waive the $300 fee if I paid a $100 removal fee. It was late at night so I walked out agreeing to return the next day. I later decided to pass on this vehicle over the alarm fee.

if they are selling you a car and it has an alarm in it already its part of the price, its illegal for dealerships to give a car price then add things onto the car claiming they are already installed prior to telling you of this and the price. what you buy price is on the car installed at the time you get that price, if anything is missed, thats on them. seller of the car they cant arbitrarilly say something added installed on the car before hand and we gave you a price, then add extra after that is illegal for dealers to do, private / used car sales do this all the time though. a dealer will lose their liscence for price altering a car without full disclosure.

I friend of mine [now deceased] was told it was state law that it was mandatory for document fees. He reached across the finance persons desk and asked if he could use the F.O.'s phone and dialed a number. He then handed the phone to the finance person and said "Here you want to talk to this person". It as the State Attorney Generals Office, consumer fraud division. The buyer was an attorney for the A. G. Sure was a lot of stuttering right after that. Then he took a red pen and started to draw lines through all the ridiculous charges. The dealership never said a word. They were so happy to get him out of there.

The warranties they offer are actually insulting. Assuming you do want to pay for a warranty for any reason the ones they offer are ridiculous. First, the money you spend monthly will equal or exceed the cost of the anticipated repairs over the probably time you will need those repairs in. Second, the conditions of the warranty are ridiculous. You must use pre qualified repair shops and, as with most warranties, they will pore through the fine print to find a reason not to cover the repair. This is why I like to walk in to the car dealer with a realistic, but fake flamethrower. It stops the grift attempts before they start.

My brother is a salesman's nightmare. These are true stories. Several years ago my brother (Mike) went to a dealership for a Ford SUV. When they presented the contract for him to sign, Mike starting crossing out some listed items. One was the destination fee. Joe (saleman) said he couldn't do that; it was the cost of bringing the vehicle to the dealership. Mike pointed out to him: "nobody else charges the buyer to bring a business their stock. That's the cost of you doing business." By the time they had reached a figure with all the crossed out items, Joe says "nobody would be able to sell you that exact SUV for that low a price". Mike then went to another dealership in another town. He drove out with the vehicle for even less then the one Joe said nobody could do. To add insult to injury, Mike drove to dealer #1 and stopped outside their entrance, flashing them the lower price invoice that "couldn't be done". My brother was such a hard negotiator when purchasing another vehicle the salesman was all frustrated and said he wouldn't be making a penny on the deal. Mike was very persistent on what he would pay, pointing out these bogus fees. When he got up to leave, the salesman said he was the toughest customer he had ever worked with. And then Mike was offered a salesman job at their dealership. He said "No thanks. I have a conscience". Sorry for the length but I thought this would interest those who have had to put up with the BS as is shown in this video.

When I saw that the finance manager had put the loan for 84 months I inwardly smiled knowing what that slime ball was trying to do--maximize his kickback. He also told me that I had to make 3 months of payments before I could pay off the loan. The loan had to be in effect for 3 months before he could get his kickback. On the other hand, the saleswoman, Ms Scarlett was competent and professional.

When I bought my car in 2017, the dealer finance rate was 6.99%. I went through most of the things listed....no, no, no, no, and so on. Almost at the end, when it came to financing, I told him that I had already gotten preapproved at my credit union for 2.99%. Suddenly, the finance guy said that the dealership could meet that. Told him sorry....to late...that he should have offered it two days earlier when I first talked to them. He had those sad little puppy dog eyes.

Several years ago I was helping my fiance buy a car in SanFran. Her 3 boys were with me and wanted to be important. After test driving the car I told the salesman I would give him $23500 for the car. Good discount and he made money. Salesman came back with a contract that had those fees added to my 23500 offer (about 4500). I asked if he understood English and when he said yes, I reminded him I would give 23500 and how he divided it up was up to him ( all those fees you list). The look on her son's face and on the salesman was priceless. Said he had to charge those fees by a state law. I laughed and said ,let's go there are other dealers. Her son's were aghast until the salesman chased us to the car and said the manager wanted to talk to me. If I promised not to tell, he would meet my price. He still mssde a profit and we got a good price. If you are not prepared to walk away, you can't negotiate.

I just smiled and said no, but they've reviewed thousands of them. Then after having four of these maggots run around like chickens with their heads cut off, after the Edmunds comment I walked out with a huge smirk on my face. Here’s one you haven’t mentioned: I have friends who went into a dealership and made a deal. The salesman left and came back with the paperwork. Without saying so, he had increased the price of the car, hoping they would just sign. They caught it. He explained that his sales manager would not agree to the negotiated price… So, from the dealership they called another dealer, left and bought the car elsewhere. Lesson is read the paperwork carefully before you sign. Very often the charges Kevin lists are there without ever being mentioned. Caveat emptor.

A car does not give you freedom. A car is an illusion, a lie, a con game. You are enslaved by car payments, depreciation, tires, gas, repairs, inspections, emissions tests, insurance, registration, plates, taxes, theft, traffic jams, parking fees, breakdowns, highway deaths, speeding tickets and more. In addition, you add needless pollution to the world, waste. Most of the time you live, you are at home or at work, and meanwhile that car sits outside costing you money, doing nothing, depreciating and rotting away. You are only ever as safe as the stupidest driver on the road around you as you travel, because you cannot control their actions. Cars are moronic. Gasoline comes from oil, and oil comes from overseas, which means the USA has to spend billions of tax dollars on a military to protect the overseas supply of oil.....that cost doesn't show at the gas pump, because of the oil lobby, so you see it in inflation, and higher prices for everything. Only sociopaths love cars. It doesn't have to be that way. A car DOES NOT need to be a necessity to survive, that is how corrupt politicians and greedy corporations have designed life to be, and you, as a voter, can change that. Do not buy a car. Live where you don't need one, and FIGHT to make ALL living places the same. Cities can and should become Arcologies, where you can live, work, shop and play all in one place, everything within walking distance, all indoors and climate controlled. All supplies brought from the countryside via efficient rail. Bring things to people, don't force people to run around chasing things. Oh, you want to live out in the country like a hillbilly? This is approximately 16 percent of recent DoD base budgets. Spread out over the 19.8 million barrels of oil consumed daily in the U.S. in 2017, the implicit subsidy for all petroleum consumers is approximately $11.25 per barrel of crude oil, or $0.28 per gallon. A more extensive estimate by two highly-regarded economists suggests the costs could be greater than $30 per barrel, or over $0.70 per gallon. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHSzgoOti7yVibc

It is scary! Looking at my wife's car purchase documents from 2014, in addition to the $795 Delivery fee included in the MSRP, we paid a $25 Title Fee, $295 Administration Fee, and $440 GAP Insurance. I went back about a year later and was able to get a pro-rated $350 refund on the GAP insurance. Total hidden fees: $410. Could have been a lot worse. Fortunately in my lovely state of New Hampshire, we don't have tax on cars, and we get temp plates and go to city hall ourselves to register the car (so "tax, title, and license" just becomes "title"). For my 2018 car purchase, I bought directly from the manufacturer, not through a dealership. The "Destination and Documentation Fee" was $1,000 baked into the MSRP up front. There were NO additional fees and everything was clearly labeled on the purchase agreement. 🙏💰

Just negotiate total price plus TTR (tax tile registration) Never focus on fees and be sure to read what you sign. You should be able to research the TTR in advance.. Also, NEVER discuss financing until you are set on a price. Don't intermingle financing with your price. If at all possible, just pay cash. That way you pay NOTHING to the finance division. You probably want to avoid selling your car as a trade in. If you do so, get your fixed price first and then find out what they will pay for you used car. You can probably get a realistic price for your trade in from your auto insurance company. Remember.... Negotiate a TOTAL price. Never let them add anything to that and the fees simply cannot be a problem If the dealer will not negotiate the total price, walk away.

In Arizona the tax is based on price minus trade-in, so depending on that offer, it could be worth trading in your car. E.g. get a price from Carvana (in minutes) before you go car shopping, and if the dealer offers you within the tax rate, trading in makes sense.

First and far most; Always remember, you the consumer is the one in charge of the purchase, till you give up your control. The car dealership is at your mercy, they want you to buy from them. However; they are in business to make money. They are NOT your friend. They have their fees and they hope you just pay the fees asking no questions. It's not illegal what they're doing, remember it's a business, they're there to make money. Because you're the one in charge of this whole deal, you're the one who decides if yes, you'll buy and play into their rules, or you walk away and go shop somewhere else. You're in charge. I learned a while back, you (the consumer ) are the one in charge.

Like it's not illegal when the Police tell you, just sign the paper and you can go home with your mother--she's sitting right there in the hallway crying, waiting for you. They teach that at the police academy. Then you sign the paper, do a decade in prison for a crime you didn't commit, until the Innocence Project, or EJI takes your case and gets you out. (Please see The Central Park Five, in which the first five people with brown skin the police saw were arrested. Each served at least 10 years in prison (or I think one may have turned State's witness to get less time by saying "they did it!") They got out after DNA was invented and they found the actual perpetrator was a man in prison for rape already. When confronted with dna, he confessed. He already wasn't going anywhere because he was convicted of a series of rapes, AROUND CENTRAL PARK, at the time. But once the police pick up some suspects, oftentimes their work is over. Coerce a confession, and it's off to Dunkin'. Oh, and Trump paid like $85k to run adds in all NYC papers, full page, saying "Bring Back the Death Penalty" for Central Park Five. When asked about it during his orange presidency, Trump means never having to say you're sorry said, "I stand by my actions." He don't give a fuck if some black people are innocent when they go to prison. What does politics have to do with the price of a car? Some people are good con men. Then they are trained to become better con men, and they make a lot of money selling shit to you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHS3ZJ2jZqZga7c

My shop teacher got me a job before graduation at a local Cadillac dealership and The body shop. They had me do all sorts of jobs from disassembly of wrecked front ends and replace them with new parts which was all insurance jobs sometimes they would even use used parts which I disagreed when the insurance was paying for a new parts. We had a customer come in one time he had a scratch on his windshield of his 2-year-old Cadillac at that time, the dealership told him that they would replace his windshield with a new one and had me buff the scratch out and charged him big bucks for the new windshield and labor

After them showing me the ropes and trying to mold me into their new shiny finance crook, I couldn’t take it anymore. I quit and started a career in banking. It’s been almost 2 decades I been in banking, on the origination side. I can sleep at night. The credit manager said their best rate was 1.9%, as well. I pointed out to her that the manufacturer advertised 0.9% financing. She said that was only for certain models. I pointed out it was for the exact model I was buying. She was "surprised" but agreed. At the signing, she tried to sell me all kinds of crap that was 15 to 30% of the payment. No thanks. @@RadioStaring Yeah they been working for decades to solve this and auto theft has only gone up 82%. I don't even this it is a crime in a lot of states anymore, a misdemeanor at most, one notch above a speeding ticket. Stealing a horse was a hanging offense. The car replaced a horse, so stealing a car should still be a hanging offense. Bet it would reduce the car theft. But it is all an economic racket. The car dealers and manufacturers love car thieves. So do the insurance companies, and the government. Why? Well the government get to collect taxes on the sale of every car. Manufacturers sell more new cars, dealers sell more new or used cars. And why did I include the insurance companies? Well it is like this. The states regulate insurance companies on the amount of profit they can earn. That profit is based on income or a percentage of it. So say they are capped at 7%. Basic math says 7% of 2 billion is more than 7% of 1 billion. Since they get to increase their policy prices to cover their claims, this causes more and more inflation of policies, so they make more money in the long run because there increases cover all cost plus 7% profit. Plus most car parts are manufactured overseas, so why give them the business.

As stated in the video: VIN etching is a $15 kit. Many insurance companies give deductions. It is etched into the glass, can't be scratched off. I did every side window and sunroof. Got $50 off per car, per year for that $15 kit and 1/2 hour work. The dealer etching is a code number and decal of an 800# to call. That company only puts that code into their data base for a year or two. Then you need to pay $$$ per year to continue to keep your code in their database. Ripoff.

We recently bought an Infinity from a used car dealer. Wish we had seen this. He charged us Gap Insurance for 895 dollars. I called my car insurance agent the next day and he was appalled that we were charged that much. Our agent got us the same insurance coverage for 875 dollars LESS! Yep, that's right, 20 dollars a year! Get your Gap Insurance (if you need it) thru your car insurance company! It'll save you hundreds of dollars! The dealer also wanted to charge us $2995 for "extended warranty" when the manufacturer warranty (thru carfax) CLEARLY shows that we still have at least 5 years left on the original warranty. My wife ripped them a new one and demanded they take it off. This dealer has ripped off so many people to the fact that the local police department has had MANY visits to their establishment because of irate and bad practices!

I tell my members to instruct the dealer to show them the alarm system they installed and to give them a list of all the vin etched parts for verification, they always take those fees off after getting called on their blatant lies. It would be nice if there was some way for dealers to be held accountable when they outright lie and deceive people. And if you don’t go into a dealer prequalified for a loan then you are asking to be taken.

But....we drove up North, I looked at the car & the the ceramic wasn't done. We went back and forth & they agreed on refunding $1750 of the cost. I wrote a review. They contacted my wife. Said a full refund if I take it down. We agreed. Then we canceled the gap & the warranty. This was also supposed to be a full refund but only refunded $2600 out of the $3,000 for the warranty. However, so far that's &5,600 back from 6K of rip offs! Plus the $600 for low jack. Imo, they still owe us a thousand dollars. That's 31K total...plus tax title and "fees" = 34k -13k down = 21K still owed. Of which we just refinanced through my credit Union at a much lower rate for 48 months. And lower payment. We Will NEVER buy from a dealer again. Maybe tell my story. His name was Bloomfield. They also did 13 hard inquiries without telling me.

Thanks for the great advice Kevin. Luckily the dealership where we bought our car didn't try and add on all of the Fake Fees but it was such a relief going into the dealership with the knowledge that you provided. And just like you outlined in your video, there was a salesman 1 then a salesman 2 and then the third guy (finance guy) salesman 3. My wife and I laughed at how the whole process played out just like you said in your video. We can't thank you enough for the knowledge that you provided in this video.

It's a line up of sales people from beginning to end. Even when they introduce you to a manager, that's just a professional "closer" they get involved if you get too smart and start saying "no" too often. Dealers understand the psychology involved in a sale, and they use that knowledge all the time. For example, it's human nature for us to give back when we think someone has helped us or been kind to us. So, when person after person gets involved in our car deal at a dealership, we are just "amazed" that so many people are making sure we get taken care of. We appreciate all this "effort on our behalf"... when in fact, every step is part of the set up, and everyone you talk to conditioning you for more things you "need" in order to "protect your investment." That last comment is used all the time... "protect your investment." Let me give you a different example which helps to understand how stupid this comment is. You're buying a rapidly depreciating piece of machinery. If you had an "investment" like this at the bank, here's what would be happening: You put $20,000 on deposit at your local bank. The day you deposit the money, it drops in value to $16,000 By the end of the year, your account balance is at $12,000 without you taking a dime out of it. You're down $8,000 in one year with this banker of yours. But, the day before you signed those loan papers, the guy said, "You should spend an additional $3,500 on these other loan products, because you know, you have to protect your investment." You had agreed to spend the extra $3,500 to do exactly what they recommended. Yet, this extra protection did not increase your account balance, not by a single cent. It also did nothing to help slow down the loss of an extra $8,000 that first year. You do the math and wonder: Why does anyone call this thing that loses you $11,500 in a single year.... an INVESTMENT?

finance guy went bananas when I told him 10k of my down would be with a credit card (1 1/2% cash back) but they weren't going to lose the sale over it. Then I got him to lower the finance % by agreeing to the Honda extended warranty for $3500. Once the paperwork is signed, they cannot change finance rate but guess what, you have time under CA law to go back in and cancel extended warranty. I did purch through another honda dealer (lots of very expensive tech on ridgelines) for about 1/3 the cost. Hope this helps....

I totally agree with this vlog. That said, there was one circumstance in which I paid a junk "car security" fee of around $250 to a used car dealer in 2018. Here are the circumstances: l. This dealer had priced a white late model Hybrid Lexus for the cheapest price I could find this side of the Mississippi, literally $1,000s less than any dealers around. 2. the car was in perfect condition with low miles, no serious accidents, and I had it independently checked out. I knew that this was a wonderful price, so such a relatively small fee was ok to pay since the dealer was not willing to negotiate. I walked out the door with the car after paying cash and the car is doing well, almost four years and about 50,000 miles later. Sometimes the junk fees are worth it when the final price is till a bargain.

Once when I was buying a car, I played dumb and asked what the "documentation fee" was for. The salesman said 'That's a fee the state says we have to charge you'. I said, "No, it's a fictitious fee that the state says you can only charge up to a maximum. I noticed you are charging the maximum. You're going to remove the fee or reduce the negotiated price of the car by an amount equal to the fee or the deal is off. And don't lie to me again." Even after catching him red-handed, there was still some doubt whether they'd make it good. They claimed they weren't making any money on the deal as it is and all the usually BS. Right...like they stay in business by giving cars away for no profit. LOL.

The salesman should have said what I say to my customers which its profit. Now I take my selling price plus dealer fee and also show how at that number, my price is fair based on book values. Because of the internet, dealers need to advertise a price that beats out the competitor and since you're not required to post your dealer fee, the sales price is what brings the customers to the store.

My daughter financed her car for 84 months and paid it off in 36 months. She wanted to keep the payments as low as possible so that if she couldn't double up on the payments every month, she wouldn't have to. Other than random emergencies here or there, she split her payment biweekly so that she would have one extra payment per year, and she doubled up on payments when she could.

Excellent advice. Reminds me of when I worked at a chain of tire stores in Los Angeles in the early 70s. This place paid us tire installers a low wage, and commission, so that we had to get the customers to buy stuff they didn't need. Then, we'd make a couple of extra bucks on each sale of over priced shock absorbers or service for their car. I didn't feel right about ripping off the customers who trusted us. I was vocal about this to my fellow workers. Eventually, the management came down on me, and I quit. I felt vindicated about my attitude towards the store, because shortly after I left, the salesman who had me leave was caught stealing from the store. Then a few years later, the entire chain of stores was indicted for charging customers for unnecessary repairs. The police had so many complaints about them, that the "bunko squad" set up a sting, and nailed them for fake repairs. So... I was right! The company went out of business a few years later.

That is why they call car dealerships “Stealerships! “. You best protection against getting ripped of for car repairs is word of mouth from friends and neighbors who can recommend an independent auto mechanic. DO NOT go to a Stealership for an oil change, tires or repairs. Only use the Stealership for warranty work. They are paid by the manufacturer to perform the warranty repair.

Thanks for your great advice in this video! Unfortunately I didn't get to use any of it lol!!! My 2012 Chrysler needed a heating/radiator repair that far exceeded a logical decision to spend that kind of money on a fix. I had to shop around a decent amount to find a vehicle that was even in-stock under $32k in my area. I ended up at a Family owned Buick/GMC dealer. The owner's son was the financing guy but definitely taught well to be honest with customers. Not 1 of your fake fees showed up and all the legit ones were there and explained well. He offered the extended warranty and did not "make you feel stupid" for not taking it right away. When we wrapped up I told him I was disappointed that I had watched this video and he didn't try any of the fake fees. He chuckled and you could tell he had pride in his family business. He said he has had people in the past bring in their paperwork from other dealers and even explained to them that those are fake fees that are up charges. Keep up the good work helping people Kevin.

Gap insurance is there if you finance retail price plus most / all the taxes and fees or negative equity being tacked onto the new loan. The rule of thumb was if you are financing anything more than 80% of the retail value, GAP maybe wise for you. BE CAREFUL when buying it as some contracts cover only 120% of retail value which may end up not covering anything in the event of a total loss early into the loan
