There are so many ways to help make the Nintendo Switch more comfortable in handheld mode, from full body controllers that fit the system tablet, to larger joy-cons and dedicated grips. So lets look over some of my favorite options including a Satisfye Grip, Hori Split Pad Pro, the Retroflag Handheld controller, and most recently, the Nitro Deck. Lets figure out which is the best fit for you to use with your Switch or Switch OLED.

Nitro deck as a wired controller is a great feature for everyday players. Most people just don't have tons of switch controllers lying around, and even if you have extra joycons, the odds they're charged when you have people over trying to play Kart are low. With this, a pro controller, and the joy cons, you have 4 decent controllers for 4 player gaming.

I mainly use the Satisfye grip for the comfort and keeping the slim form factor while traveling. The right side of the grip is wider, giving my thumb more room to work with as opposed to the other options. Can't wait for the Ronin series, where I can set my Switch in the dock for the night without taking out the grip!

I like the retro flag one but the deal breaker for me is the charging position I love how the nitro deck lets you charge the switch from the back instead of the ridiculous uncomfortable location of right in the middle front of the device like it usually is. Will probably get the nice mint coloured one

My favourite case for playing the switch is the Plenbo G-Case. It does everything else besides using Hall effect sticks. It has Bluetooth for other controllers, extra battery packs using a magnetic connection, it can convert to a tabletop mode and the handles transform and connect together with joy-cons to create a controller like experience similar to the grip that comes with a switch. It also has two slots to hide game carts and three options for grip styles. My only gripe is that Plenbo make a slimmer version of the travel case just to carry the switch with g-case, cables, and their dock.

Great bit of comparison! Just ordered the same purple nitro deck and am interesred how it feels. I've always had the Fixture S2 and the pro controller as a permanent setup with the oled switch which I think is the most ergonomic way to play in handheld, but I'm still interested in trying out an all-in-one slab to carry around.

Anyway that works best for each individual. The best for me is a docked oled with a spice orange retro fighters pad. I don’t need to worry about grips or third party joy cons or whatever. There are so many variations that there’s a solution for everyone. Hell, if you’re on a budget and all you can afford is a second hand lite then you still get access to a massive library of games. Such a great console.

When it comes to the larger joy-con alternatives I actually have a pair of Nyxi. And they lasted around three months before they started making constant disconnects while playing after I accidentally dropped my carrying case with the switch in it and the joy-cons attached. Anything not using the side slits for connecting I'd say is a major bonus when it comes to longevity. So to me that is a major reason for getting the Nitro Deck or the Retroflag.

I put hall effect sticks in all of my joycons even my boxypixel shelled ones. The new nyxi hyperion pro also feel nice. I also think the stick come off to easily on the nitrodeck. The tranparent purple plastic on the retroflag also looks just awesome. Update: Ok I have tried using this exclusively for a few days and I am not liking it. The triggers are driving me NUTS I can't rest my fingers on the them AT ALL. Here are my preferences in order by confort all of which I switch between regulary based on how I feel. I got the Satisfye grip a while back and I have to say it's been so much better for portable play than not having a grip. Haven't tried the Nitrodeck though so can't compare against that So nice to know having it in a grip I'm not going to accidentally damage the Switch's connecting rails on the joycons, and it's so much sturdier for putting it on a table than the original Switch's built in kickstand.

So far my favourite switch controller is the 8bitdo pro ultimate. It has fully button and stick remapping (including stick axis inversion which is now my top optional addon), has gyro, halleffect sticks, and is closest in form factor to a switch pro controller which is legit the most comfy official switch controller. Nitrodeck have just launched their updated nitrodeck, the + version which now includes button/stick remapping, and has both sticks on top which is my personal preference (as a WiiU tablet lover, i think that is still the most comfy controller cuz BIG, like bigger than the Xbox Duke!), so hoping the deck+ lives up to all those features working without issue for me. Tho ideally, my perfect switch controller would be more like the Hori splitpad pro, but with all the features of the 8bitdo ultimate (wireless, gyro, halleffect sticks, full button/stick remapping). Hoping CRKD or other companies make something like that for the Switch or Switch2 soon

The Scull&Co. Grip option just gets a side mention? And not even a link in the description? I think their interchangeable grip feature with different grip styles to suit different scenarios/tastes is great -- that and it has always been possible to dock the Switch with these on. And in addition to their grip option, their ecosystem of accessories is awesome too; I have their thumb stick grip/extenders to alleviate the range of motion issue with the joycon sticks, their 'Joygrip' which also has the same interchangeable grip options to facilitate a more comfortable docked-play option for those who can't get a pro controller for any reason (on top of enabling one to charge the joycons separated from the system), and their 'Max Carry' case which fits the Switch with any of the grips attached while also having a compartment to store their awesome Switch Dock, the 'Jumpgate' (which has it's own list of amazing features). I would've expected them to get a talked about a bit more in a video like this 😅

Agreed. I love my NeoGrip, especially the way the green and white one matches my TOTK Switch. It’s also so satisfying to have that sort of grasp on the device and eliminate the joycon wobble, then still be able to just slide the whole thing right back into the dock. I also love the joycon caps. I don’t even heighten them, just use them to make the sticks more “grippy.” I’ve been considering getting a third party dock for a secondary tv and travel. You say the NeoGrip has served you well? No issues? I just get scared over the chance of it messing with the switch
@kylesanders9543
@kylesanders9543 9 ай бұрын
@Virishking You mean the Jumpgate dock? If so, yeah it's definitely served me well :) no issues at all. I also use it for my secondary TV and it's awesome for travel - even if the dock is too big for certain scenarios the actual functioning part of it, which they call the "Core drive" can be detached, which is basically just a USB/HDMI Hub the size of a twin Kit Kat bar that works with not only the Switch but my laptop too! I understand your worry with third-party docks though, but after doing a bunch of my own research I can offer some advice: All you need to make sure of is that you're getting the right charging brick/cable. The majority of cases where a third-party dock has killed a switch has come down to the Voltage/Wattage/Amperage of the third-party charging adapter being incompatible with what the Switch needs / accepts. The jumpgate doesn't come with its own charging cable (or HDMI cable bear in mind) so I'd say the safest option is to just purchase Nintendo's own official Switch dock charging cable. The official option is pricer than other options though, so you can get a third party one - like I did - and be just fine but... and I cannot stress this enough... you neeeed to make sure it has exactly the same charging specs as the official one or you could brick your Switch.

@Virishking Oh also to add to my previous reply - Scull&Co. have made two version of the Jumpgate, one for the first Switch and a newer model for the Switch OLED, just get the one that matches the Switch you have. I don't know if anything will go wrong / be incompatible if you don't... but better to be safe than sorry haha

The fixture s1 & 2 or nyxi joy cons are the superior way to play
@crestofhonor2349

The main issue with the switch is the joycons, Much of it stems from Nintendo wanting the joycons to be used in one hand so adding in large grips would make it worse for single joycon games despite very few people using this feature. Same reason why the d-pad sucks and is just 4 buttons instead of the usual cross style they used in the past. Personally my main is the Hori Split Pad Pro as I don't have any other controllers besides my standard Joycon. Wanted to check out the Nitrodeck or the Retroflag. My left joycon does drift so the satisfye isn't really a great option for me

As much as I want to buy a pair of split pad pros for my switch, the fact that it doesn't have gyro makes it a deal breaker for this Splatoon player.

And the Hori Split Pad cannot be used wirelessly. And according to Wuff Den, the Nitro Deck can be used when the Switch is in dock. It comes with a USB A-C cable which allows you to use it through USB.

Why is literally no one talking about the Skull & Co. grips? Some sort of conspiracy at works? ;) I found their grips are the best for me: Very subtle, I can just take off the handgrips themselves and it still fits in my old switch case and I can dock it just fine (screen protector is advised though!).

Totally get the vanity stance. I tend to just use my binbok controllers. I like the lights, they offer all the features I’m looking for and they don’t need to be removed to dock it. It bugs me though because I swapped shells on my tablet and joy cons and never get to see them now. As much as I like my satisfye grip though I still find the basic one licensed by Nintendo to be plenty comfortable too and a bit easier to put on and remove from the grip. The satisfye one likes to grab the joy cons and detach them. There’s also the durability issue to consider too. Aside from the notorious drift problem. Joy cons are super fragile. Right after replacing the shells, buttons and thumb sticks on my joy cons, one fell off my lap. Dropped maybe 2 feet max on to a carpeted floor. Thumb stick broke and needs to be replaced again. I did buttons and shells separately so I had to open 4 joy cons twice each already and am not too eager to do it again. I’ve dropped nearly every other controller I own in this same manner at some point and this is the only one to ever break from it.

I use the Retroflag (the clear blue/purple GameCube inspired grip) and absolutely love it. I can't deal with anything that still requires use of the Joy-Cons, i find them to be total junk. Tiny analogue sticks and no proper d-pad, just rubbish.

I bought the Nitro Deck and it's very close to being perfect. However, the placement of the D pad and right joystick ended up giving me some serious hand pain. I've had to return mine even though in all other respects it's a joy to use and makes the Switch feel so nice and chunky.

i always find this kind of thing fascinating because to me, the switch being flat is what makes it comfortable, as soon as any grip at all gets introduced, my arms, my shoulders, my wrists, my hands all start hurting so bad lol. (i'm aware i'm a huge minority, i have eds and i hold the switch by it just kind of? sitting on top of my middle fingers, its hard to explain, but imagine using absolutely no grip to hold it at all) (edit for spelling mistakes)

Ummm I don’t think so. And also I see them over $50. To get the full set which has an adapter to play in dock mode through USB that’s like $100. And you cannot buy the adapter separately if you already have the Split Pads.

I still can't believe that videos like this do not mention the Fixture S1 and S2. They are definitely in the conversation for the best handheld experience. With that said, my favorite thing about the switch is its modular Frankenstein design where you can physically change the feel and controls. I don't think there is any one "best" mobile experience. I like having options based on what game I'm playing.

Still use the pro controller play a lot of switch wife family me. Still think the pro controller is the best and GameStop with the 2 year plan. So after just swap it out for a new one get a new plan. Keep it fresh also for nfc reader if your grinding first party games with amiibo and someone who has every Zelda amiibo. Also living in a home where the family takes so much space plus with the wife being at home. Play my switched personally docked but on my iPad Pro 12.9 mini led tablet that’s also like my computer and media consumption device. Works good flawless just with a nicer mini led liquid renta XDR display.
