About 5-6 years ago I pranked my class with the same bit on April Fool's day. I dressed the part, mispronounced everyones name while taking role, broke a clipboard, and shoved stuff off my desk. The kids who had seen this sketch before were laughing out of their chairs. Those who hadn't were totally befuddled. Man that was fun. I even had 2 A-arons that year.

@osama bin laden my bro "used for emphasis to demand an answer when asking someone for a reason, explanation"
@youcanlearnalotfromlydia2 жыл бұрын
@osama bin laden my bro Pray tell is an extremely old fashioned way of saying please which nowadays is almost exclusively used in a sarcastic or ironical way, as here. When people in English switch to an excessively formal and polite register not needed for the situation it can be done in a humourous way, as here where that is also done in a sarcastic and condescending way, to emphasise the teacher scolding the student. I pray you, pray tell me, would have meant please before asking a question in everyday language maybe in the 1700s, from the Early Middle English "prithee", meaning pray, i.e. please, used e.g. in Shakespeare in the late 1500s, early 1600s. The joke is that the teacher knows very high sophisticated language that is hundreds of years old, can correctly use and pronounce such terms, but can't pronounce any very common names correctly. (Exodus meaning leave is a biblical reference entering common English in the 1500s and 1600s with various attempts of the authorised Bible translation from the original Latin, in this sketch meaning to leave, leaving, exiting, it would never normally be used in this way, it is excessively, ridiculously over the top and posh and formal, in the Bible it, the Exodus, refers to the Jews who were enslaved in Egypt, fleeing Egypt with God's help for the Promised Land, i.e. Israel). So again the teacher knows really formal sophisticated language and is clearly very educated in terms of classical literature, history and scripture but is trying to sound so by using an excessively and oddly formal register in scolding the pupil, and so he sounds ridiculous. Premature also sounds oddly excessively formal, we use premature in specific ways like a premature birth, giving birth prematurely, so premature sounds off here when early would be normal and natural. "Why do you need to leave early" is what a normal person speaking normally would say, instead of the excessively formal, very old and polite and odd choice of words he chose, but he doesn't mean to be polite, rather to put the student down, insult and mock him, by creating this distance owing to deliberate excessive formality.
