Keychron Q1 Pro Review and Mod Sound Test

The Keychron Q1 Pro is a great update to the original Q line, with a better out of the box experience in my opinion. But I think it also still needs some light modifications to sound its best (and to make it suit your personal taste). In the video I test out force break, tape, and foam mods with different switches and keycaps.

Loved your video - thank you! I purchased the Q3 Pro (SE!) with banana switches and I've been hunting for a video just like yours since then! I have never modded a keyboard before and while i love the look of my new keyboard i wasn't overwhelmed with positive feelings about the sound (banana switches) out of box. Now i feel inspired and also justified in learning more and spending time on improvements. It's all new to me and i wasn't sure if it was just me - your video had helped immensely. THANK YOU!!

I applied Keychron's acoustic upgrade kit and it indeed has a much better tone with tape and without the foam going into the bottom case. Thank you!

Just got this barebone in Shell White, still waiting for switches and caps though. But man, straight out of the box this feels like a tank! The rotary encoder and knob feels amazing, very smooth and precise. I will never buy a mainstream pre-built plastic Ducky, Corsair or Logitech ever again, this is so much better! Hopefully this trend of highly customizable boards will just increase over time and larger companies will jump on it too.

I have a Q1 Pro with the banana switches as well, mine sound a tad deeper out of the box but definitely plan a few mods. Still trying to decide for now if I want cheery profile keycaps before I start pulling things apart. I've been using it on and off the past week or so on my Mac and so far I've really enjoyed it. Great video with some nice simple mods to get going!

I got the acoustic kit with it, and that made it so much thoccyer (you still have to open up the keyboard even if you do the pre-build) I like the bananas, I'm going to switch the keycaps to something way less tall. I feel for these tall switches I want feet. but the case doesn't come with feet.

Keychron makes the Q5 Pro, which has the same features and build of the Q1 Pro but with a number pad, so that might be worth checking out!

Honestly if you only care about sound and VIA isn't a requierment, there seems to be some great sounding budget options coming out lately, like the Yunzii AL71 or YZ75. Monsgeek also seems to sound less pingy than the Q series.

are you at all concerned about doing the tape mod in a keyboard with a battery that could get hot while charging?

It does have a sheet between the battery and the PCB still and it doesn't seem to get exceedingly warm - I put my hand on the front of the case occasionally and never felt it getting warm enough that I was concerned. You did make me wonder though if there is a kind of thermal tape out there that isn't super sticky that you could use if you're concerned about potentially melting regular masking or painter's tape.

If there were heat, the entire keyboard case is aluminum, so more than likely the heat will move towards the metal first. Also you are likely only charging the battery once a month or two (ie 6-10 times a year) so no worries.

I feel Keychron sound profiles are always somewhere between meh and actually disappointing straight out of the box. Then there's those comically tall keycaps to boot which has me think going with a barebone is the way to go until you happen to be in love with the stock combo. But... instead of a barebone you might as well go custom and get something much nicer at a similar price point. It's not 2019 anymore after all and 200 €/$ go a long way even looking at in-stock custom kits. I think they're going to have to try harder going forward tbh.

You are right. Jris and QK are better. The only downside is those are not in stock year round, so for instock option I guess either akko or keychron. But those who are patient should get Jris or QK boards.

@@grumpysquid I have akko pc75b plus and that one has a switch for windows or Mac. So it depends on the model. You can check. They also had a white Air series that also has the Mac keycaps.
