I'm married to a Filipina now for 16 years. When we were courting, I took her to Thailand and she absolutely fell in love with the place. We will retire in two years in Thailand. This is where her heart is. So why not have the best of both worlds? Marry a Filipina and live in Thailand. She'll love it. You are only 3 hours from Phils if you want to go back and visit. I prefer the Philippines because it was the first country outside the United States & Canada that I got to see the interior. I met my late wife of 31 years in the Philippines on January 16,1975 when I was 21 in the U.S.Navy on my fifth Navy cruise which was my first Westpac cruise. I married my late wife after I got stationed in the Philippines. My late wife & I had 3 children during our marriage. She passed away on March 6,2010 in Tucson,AZ. My late wife is, was and will always be the true loves of my life. If I were to move outside the United States, I would move to the Philippines.

If I had to buy in Thailand or the Philippines, then I would agree as the currency exchange along with better options on resale options tend to lean towards a lot of places outside of Manila in the areas where tourists go on vacation. If I had more options, I'd seriously consider Japan as your investment would be more secure if the property is in a high demand area where local buyers would be more likely to buy than tourists.

I've been to the Philippines (4 times) and I have had the greatest experience there. It is no exaggeration that they are very welcoming. I have never felt more welcome anywhere else in my entire life. There are a few things I would like to point out: 1. It's not a big deal that Thailand has 40+ world class hospitals and Philippines only has 4. If you get sick, you will only need one. I went to the hospital on my first visit there and it was actually a better experience than going to the hospital in the US. It was a private hospital but the cost was 1/10 what I would have paid in the US. Also, they had way more staff (nurses), than a US hospital to take care of patients. I basically had my own nurse. 2. The internet and electrical grid there sucks fat donkey sack. There's not much else to say about it. I spent most of my time in the province though, in places where there was no electricity or internet. I loved it and I blended right in with the locals, taking cold showers outside in my clothes, squatting around a large community bowl of rice and fish and eating with my hands, and making two hour treks on foot up the side of a mountain to go into town to buy supplies. Oh yeah, I was roughing it in the Phils baby. 3. If you decide to stay long term (months at a time like I did or longer) you could actually live there rent free. I met people there that really liked me and I was invited to stay in their homes for the entire duration of my stay. I pitched in and helped with chores and bought food but no one ever ask me for anything in return for staying there. They were absolutely thrilled that I was there and everyone in the village was super kind and treated me with respect. Out of the four trips I have taken there (a total of 12 months in the Philippines), I spent $0 for room and board. I spent money but it went to the people i was staying with, buying food and supplies. I've never been to Thailand, so I'm not familiar with the culture. But I can tell you this from experience, if you don't mind the crappy electrical and internet, go to the Philippines. You will meet the most amazing people that you have ever met. Especially in the provinces. God bless the Philippines.

Lets put it this way. If your a foreigner and an introvert. You can easily choose thailand coz you don't feel the need to surround yourself with that many people. But if you're outgoing and wants to build connections and perhaps a career, then go to the Philippines. You can easily make friends here. Only advice I can give is that choose what makes you happy. If you're happy with the people around you then its great. If fancy stuff gives you happiness then its amazing. But at the end of the day Your fancy house or car can't talk back to you. I'd rather live in poverty surrounded by people whom I can interact with rather than live a luxurious life alone.

I'm not sure what Philippines you went to, but the PH I went to lacked what I equated with love in the west. I was hoping to meet a girl with empathy not narcissism. A girl who brought contraception not babies to the table. A girl who was worldly and valued self-actualization over religion and family. My wallet got a lot of attention and I was told money = love; but that's not the "romantic love" I experienced back home in college.

In the Philippines most women I met see me as a way out of poverty and that is it. In Bangkok most women I met have a proper job, make enough money to travel on their own etc. and genuinely look for a partner in life, not a ticket out of poverty, because they are already out of it. Also Bangkok is a proper city with meetup events and where you can pursue various interests and hobbies ( way more than Manila ). Do that and you meet good women there. I met great women at board game meetups, libraries, language exchange meetups, conventions etc. Your chances to find this are even higher in Kuala Lumpur, where I currently am. Educated, intelligent, well travelled women with money in the bank galore here. Oh and basically everyone speaks English here. Cheers and good luck.

Nice content. Me and my partner would want to retire soon, and we choose Philippines specifically Davao City. We are contented with the following: 1. White sand beaches in the nearby islands just 10 minutes to 1 hour boat ride from Davao City. 2. We can afford to live comfortably in a nice 24 hour guarded subdivision. 3. Cost of living suits our budget. 4. Safer place. 5. We don't need to spend $50 for a seafood...Seafoods here are a lot cheaper than other highly urbanized areas and in your 500 pesos, you can already buy mix seafoods in the public market. 6. Davao city is a booming metropolis, new restaurants that also cater international cuisine have built up. We also eat outside sometimes and try new restaurants. 7. Beaches and beaches and beaches....white sand beaches in many islands are just endless. 8. The nearby Bukidnon offers breathtaking mountain sceneries and resorts...so we also go for road trip. We couldn't ask for more. Infrastructure is improving here, so it is now more convenient for road trips. 9. Medical services are good (in which, Filipino medical staff are globally known for). We have our health insurance that are accredited to all hospitals here, and the staff speak English from the guard to the Doctors. 🙂😉 10. Simple life but comfortable, Urban life but laid-back, modern structures and amenities here but still, the beauty of nature surround it. Been in Thailand too, but I love there for shopping and food only. :-)

I've lived in Taiwan for almost 30 years, and am from Canada. I have travelled quite a lot in Thailand, and thoroughly through Philippines. This was a great run-down, generally. I'd suggest that Cost of Living is MUCH cheaper in Philippines, when utilizing grocery and hardware stores (general living), while you compared more like restaurant meals, for example. Philippines takes the cake, EASILY, if you're prepared to cook for yourself, or even have that "special someone" you've found cook for you; either way, both in home and going out are cheaper in Philippines, but day to day living is WAY cheaper. As for Safety, I think something you overlooked was the crime in each country towards people LIVING there, or just travelling there (which can include WHY and WHERE they're travelling. I've found myself generally feeling safe in both countries, but... A - As a fit white male, I'm not too scared walking down a street in the middle of the night, as I might be if I was either less fit, or a woman; as well, I suspect it works both ways, in that people who want to commit crime are going to look for the weaker targets, so... Our personal experience isn't always an accurate indicator. B - Another safety concern is being able to 'CALL FOR HELP', and here, Philippines, due to English speaking community (*but don't be swayed by that argument EVERYWHERE! There are MANY Filipinos whose English if VERY POOR to NON EXISTANT! This is primarily found in the far reaching Provinces, of course... "English being a National Language" is a bit misleading in that respect). If you need help, anything from a lost bag, to getting something stolen, etc., it's going to be a lot easier to get help in Philippines, for this reason. That's going to make your at least FEEL more safe, and sometimes that can be as important as the reality. Both countries have their share of impoverished people, and so crime exists, a lot, especially on the petty-street robbery / swindling / money-changing / added-costs levels... If you're smart, and act safely, however, then I have rarely had a problem in either country; and when I have, authorities have been generally happy to help, as the government (as well as a large percentage of the public) know that tourism is A SIGNIFICANT SOURCE OF INCOME for EVERYONE there, and will generally "protect" 'tourists' from such swindlers. And a benefit being who you are, allows for most people to FOREVER consider you a 'tourist', no matter how long you live there. (I'm still just "a foreigner" to most Taiwanese, and often treated as such, despite my living here for close to 30 years! Only the closest people around you, or the people of a village / town, get to know you're actually a resident!) Lastly, I'll have to HIGHLY recommend Philippines over Thailand for the beaches / water sports / outdoors activities generally. The main reason is, there are some great destinations in Thailand, but most are well know, well populated by locals, and... LOOK at the tourism numbers you listed in the video!!! There are just SO MANY MORE people going to these places, creating everything from cost increases (I found scuba diving prices in Thailand resort areas 3~4 TIMES THE COST $$$$$$$ than in Philippines), and there are COUNTLESS places to get away from EVERYONE in Philippines, compared to Thailand, and still be comfortable. Maybe it takes a little more travel, but compared to what travel you'd have to do to find similarly remote and sparsely populated locations in Thailand, it's really not. Anyway, not trying to be 'critical', but rather, adding to your information. Great video otherwise, given the time you had to go into all the subjects. Cheers!

From what I read about Thailand, is that you can own or buy land there. And trying to start a business there is outrageous due that you need a Thai partner, and they get 51% of the business right from the start. This is a big no, and a good way to go broke in no time.
@Zonfeair

You can but land in Thailand but you don't own it. Only Thai citizens can own land. Buying and owning is two different things. That is a scam many expats fall into buying land for their girl friend or new wife only to find out that in either case the one who really owns the land is the girl friend or wife. Which many will dump you shortly after you buy the land. however you can buy and own a condo because that is not considered land ownership.@@mfayant

I’ve spent a lot of time over the last 18 years in the Philippines and a few months in Thailand over the last few years. I think living in the Philippines and taking trips to Thailand once or twice a year for a month at a time would be the ideal retirement for me. I like that the Philippines isn’t so structured around tourism and feels more like home if that makes sense. Thailand feels like you’re constantly on vacation which is only good for so long. Thai food is better and the hotels are cheaper. The Filipinos are generally more open and happy you are in their country. Dating in the two countries is where I noticed a HUGE difference!! The women in the Philippines want to be loved in every sense of the word. Thai women tend to look at status, the way you dress and how much you’re willing to spend as a deal breaker. Thai women are not so different than women of the West if you are trying to avoid that situation. I prefer the Philippines options for peaceful trips to remote islands. If you have more money or are going for a shorter stay like 2 weeks or less I would choose Thailand hands down. The food and transportation is a clear winner and you’re more likely just there for fun not to find love.

I did it in Thailand. I'm Dutch and the dentists in my country, where I lived just sucked. Never liked their attitude. I never suffered any pain in Thailand and though I paid myself, it was cheap enough to do so. During the years I worked I also, if possible, had my hair cut in Thailand and I bought my clothes there. Having three days off in Bangkok I was often busy doing those things... now I live in Thailand, already since the end of 2012.

I've never been to the Philippines but I went to Thailand in 1999 to learn Thai massage and fell in love with everything. I retired to Bangkok four yeas ago and never had the tiniest regret. I live far from the tourist areas so I am treated as a privileged minority. Thais have the lowest English proficiency in ASEAN but I have English-speaking friends and learned some basic Thai that lets me find things. I walked into my nearby private hospital and complained of chest pain. Within a half hour, I was in the catheter room being readied for balloon angioplasty. The total out-of-pocket bill, including 4 days in private room, was $6,050.00. It would have been half that at a government hospital but that was 30 minutes away by taxi. (Bangkok has the cheapest taxis on the planet) A visit to my heart doctor costs less than $30 including bloodwork. 500 MB fiber internet is $18/mo. Thailand is known as the "Supermarket to the World" so the food is fresh and plentiful. There is two things I would say to contrast the Philippines and Thiland: First, there are no hurricanes/typhoons in Thailand and I read where the Philippines get hit regularly, and second, the population of Thailand is just under 70 million compared to almost 111 million in the Philippines and Thailand is 71% larger so there is much more empty land in Thailand.

This was the best review I've ever seen, I've lived in Thailand for many years and loved it but eventually I got so fed up with the visa rules and the condescending attitude of Thai people in general, I'm actually fluent in Thai and had a Thai driver's license when I lived there, but I was always treated as a man of the West anyway. I then moved to the Philippines and this was and became the land of smiles for me, everything was so much easier here, when you are a retired man who wants to relax and avoid stress and hassle then you move to the Philippines. And everything is cheaper here too. For me this meant little as I have enough money, I lived centrally in Makati and shopped what I wanted. But many times I should have wished that I traveled out to the Islands. Now I live in my home country with my 25 years younger than me Filipina wife and we had a daughter during covid so now we stay here as I want her to grow up here, so my traveling days are over but I wish everyone a good trip and travel to the Philippines it is 10 times better

Now I don't know if you are Thai or where you come from? But I'm from Norway and we just don't treat foreign people the way Thais do, they look down on us and they're distinctly racist, everyone sees men from the west as sex buyers, I lived in the country outside Udon Thani, i hate pattaya and all it stands for, i have never bought a lady in my life and will never do anything like that. And when I say I speak the language Thai fluently, I mean it just as well as the 6 other languages I also speak fluently, And despite this, I have never been treated badly in the other 6 countries that I speak. Thais just ignore you completely when you speak to them in their own language if they don't want anything to do with you and most do Mate, But you know so much more than me about this don't you? After all, I've only lived there for many years and you probably have 10 times more experience than me, don't you?

One of the primary reasons why I chose the Philippines because the people are genuine compared to those who are more concerned about the flow of cash from the ATM/wallet. I have been an expat for 18 years, and have had experiences in both places. Another reason is the language is written and spoken in English (as well as Tagalog - the Filipino language). Acquiring property is easier in the Philippines. Thailand is nice and some things are superior, but Integrity is paramount - I need to know I am supported even when I am not watching.

I have been traveling to or living in SE Asia for over 33 years. Each country has its advantages. Food and healthcare, Thailand, beaches, natural beauty of the country, Philippines over Thailand. I have lived in both countries' and can say for expats that have places in both Thailand and the Philippines', all pick the Philippines as their primary residence. I live in and prefer Bali Indonesia over both. Why: Cost of living, a lot better retirement visa options, and I am a surfer and Indonesia has far better surf than the other two countries. Indonesia matches the beauty overall of the Philippines and both exceed Thailand. I travel to the 3 countries and enjoy all for different reasons. As far as friendliness, the Philippines is by far the winner.

Thailand has better beach infrastructure by far. Thailand has better overall food, but the Philippines has gems of food if you know where to look for it such as bamboo shoots and dried fish (or shrimp) in coconut milk. Or the Bicol express dish. Philippines is less expensive but the hassle and noise factors far outweigh the savings by country mile. Philippines is place to go if you want to rough it and have a very raw (and often annoying) experience with locals who are extremely communicative and jokers. Philippines healthcare is horrific based on my horrible experience (some people disagree with me). Starlink is already available in the Philippines.

I spent 5 years visiting Thailand before venturing over to the PI ...and then spent the next 5 years traveling there. Your comparisons are spot-on and would make Thailand the choice for anyone. However, I find your personal rating on the beaches and VISA amusingly skewed that reveal your bias, which, hey! We all have them. I have them as well, which is why my choice would be the PI. I would only add that while I agree with all the scores (and even your biased ones), the one point I would like to make is that the English language component in the PI carries a LOT of weight for me ...and frankly, is THE determining factor. The ease of which to communicate in the PI versus Thailand is HUGE, and it is a day-in, day-out, constant factor. Medical/Health Services is also another category that carries a lot more weight than others. But Safety is too close a call, and things like Beaches and Culture are not as weighty, and it's splitting hairs when both are gorgeous and fascinating. Loved you exercise, though. Well done!

Your reactions are as sharp as mine. I fully agree on most of the comparisons and the pros n cons discussed between these two countries but same with ur analysis, tho the author may seem to say he was RIGHT FAIR & SQUARE, I did still find some biasness on the way he delved the comparisons. Category 2 BEACHES & ISLANDS, he hands down said Philippines wins in this category globally but for him he picked Thailand. The category was solely BEACHES & ISLANDS ( not accomodation n ease of transport as it has a different category later ) and yet he really didn’t highlight the endless abundance of magnificent pristine n turquoise waters of the Philippines but rather mention the lack of good accommodations n amenities there and he focussed more on the Thai aspects. I’ve been to both n there’s no way u can compare the beauty of Thai beaches to Philippine beaches yes Krabi was stunning but we’re talking on the general aspect BEACHES & ISLANDS. Most Thai beaches are murky n only few with immmaculate condition. He also didnt highlight that Philippine beaches have recently won awards n notices by many international globe trotting travel magazines etc like Conde Nas and Philippine beaches are predominantly mentioned and winning. But hey in the food category the author easily jumped to Thai world renowned recognitions and awards barely mentioning one aspect of Philippine cuisine it sounded so bad n nowhere near to Thai food quality. With regards to safety, ease and comfort he didn’t really highlight the rampant SCAMMING TRAPS happening in Thailand particularly in touristy places like Phuket and the Grand Palace area. I was scammed there the very first time I went to Thailand and now in KZbin a lot of NEW scamming techniques are in exposes’! I get it this a comparison and the author is obviously pro Thailand but this could have been more balanced and transparent. Just saying!

This is actually nice. The lesser the tourist the lesser our country Philippines will be polluted. We as natives wanted our beaches and nature reserves more regulated and preserve for future generation. We have our own problems with the locals so we don't want more foreigners to add. Thailand is richer so that's not a wonder or a contest for first class infrastructures. Thailand is also catching up with English language and they have more first-class beaches accomodation than our humble local accomodation, we don't stand a chance when compared. As we have been exploited by many western countries before, we just wanted a peaceful country now and rebuilding our new own identity as we lost so much in the previous colonizations.

One thing you neglected in the food category is that normal Thai food (the food that Thai's eat all the time) is laced with sugar and salt. It is quite common to see on the table little jars of sugar and Nam Pla (very salty liquid) and the Thais smother their food in both. There is already salt and sugar added while cooking. That being said in the Philippines portions tend to be American in size. IMHO it is not fair to compare top eateries with what the common people eat.

For those who are looking for a more Touristy destination and a faster paced lifestyle vibe, I would agree that Thailand is the place for you. Personally, I am down with the Philippines for the more family oriented laid back local lifestyle AWAY from the tourist areas. The only thing I would critique, is the food category. The "40" restaurants that Thailand has, that gave it the win on your list, are all in Tourist heavy areas, and you will pay Tourist heavy prices. so from a "Retiring" perspective, Not the kinds of places that most retirees would be frequenting . A better comparison would have been cost and variety of foods at markets or at local none tourist eateries.

This means if a person was involved say in drug trafficking, then next year he goes for renewal, he will instead get picked up by police. If's for everyone's protection. No because where expats are staying is a sign of their personal preferences which is as diverse as there are people. To really see what is best is to see the facts from each country, regarding where they rank in the world in different areas and get cost of a basic living. Most people who retire in those countries do not stay at a hotel, but actually get a house or buy/rent a condo, so it should be somewhat easy to make an estimate on how much it costs to live in both countries that is comparable. Yes costs of living depends on what luxury you want, but you can make a basic living with only a house, one car and normal everyday food for two people and a child, and stick to that. That way it's easier to really compare the cost of living and it would be more scientific valid and accurate.

Here in the Philippines we don't need alot of retirees we only need more visitors because we are protecting our nature and culture...so come and visit and enjoy the nature and culture of the Philippines and leave. ..then go to Thailand and enjoy your retirement period👍😅✌️

I guess so that is why foreigners visit Thailand more -- they are more welcoming of retirees so they visit it more often prior to retiring in order to scope and immerse. It's the expat retirees who has the pensions AKA money anyway - money to create more local jobs, to protect nature, to improve economy which lessens crime. The Thais figured it out but Pinoys hadn't hence their progress is very limited. More local Thais meanwhile are able to afford their own condos while condos in Philippines remain just a dream for local Filipinos. Majority of them still rent.

I spent a bunch of time in Thailand and the Philippines back in the 90s. I have been happily married to my Thai wife for over twenty-three years. She is a little more bossy and "take charge" than I would imagine a Filipina would be, but for me that's probably a good thing. 😉

@@alanpercyveron5798 I don't need your sympathy. I am 100% happy with my Thai wife. Also, she didn't try to move her entire extended family in with us.

It is probably one of the very best comparison videos (Philippines vs. Thailand) I have ever come across and watched. Outstanding! I am married to a Filipina and have two homes in the Philippines and the third in the United States. I have spent more than half my adult life living, working, and investing in the Philippines and visiting other nearby Asian countries since 1980. The primary reason why I selected and live in the Philippines is because I am married to a Filipina and because of the healthcare I receive from Saint Luke's mentioned in your video. Foreigners living in the Philippines are not allowed to have firearms.

Excellent summary of all aspects of where to go for retirement. I didn't make a real conscious choice. My choice of the Philippines was just just driven by the fact that my loved one came from the Philippines. I traveled many many times to Thailand for business and visited all the hotspots. And oh my Thai woman are gorgeous. And food is so much better. But somehow Philippines took my heart. Only if your choices are really a white sheet ypu can make the comparison you just made. And I think it is dead on.

The visa situation is the Philippines big plus - which is Best has been debated for decades whipped to death. I vacation in Thailand but live in Philippines about 40 60 is for me a good mix. I got pretty fair money.
