Keys to success everyone can learn from refugees | Liyah Babayan | TEDxBoise

How do the 68 million refugees worldwide rebuild their lives after wars, genocide, and natural disasters force them from their homes and countries? With fewer resources but greater fortitude, they begin afresh and not only rebuild, but also contribute to their
adopted communities both economically and culturally. They have three specific
lessons about success to offer the world. Liyah is a dedicated social entrepreneur with a passion for giving back to her adoptive community and country. After surviving the anti-Armenian ethnic killings in Azerbaijan, Liyah and her family were resettled in Twin Falls, Idaho through the CSI Refugee Program. She became an entrepreneur at age 22, served on the Twin Falls School Board and was the first refugee to run for Twin Falls City Council election. Liyah has been recognized as one of Idaho's Women of the Year, and featured in The New York Times. Azerbaijan has a large number of internally displaced people and refugees, mostly as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The First Nagorno-Karabakh war displaced 750,000 Azerbaijanis, with 600,000 of them being from Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts and the 150,000 of them being from Armenia. According to the stories of survivors, Armenian soldiers shot and bayoneted more than 450 Azerbaijanis, among whom there were many women and children who fled from their city due to the attack of the Armenians. Last night in the Agdam morgue at the mosque, 479 deaths were recorded, 29 of the dead were buried in the cemetery. I saw seven bodies awaiting burial, among them two children and three women. Aghdam hospital looks like a place of a bloody massacre. According to doctors, they have 140 patients who survived the massacre, most of them have bullet or deep knife wounds. But in Agdam they are not safe either. On Friday evening, the city underwent rocket fire, several buildings were destroyed, 15 people were killed. Refugees headed towards Baku. “The Armenians will not stop until they reach Baku,” one of the officials said, leaving the city. “Then the real war will begin.”

It’s true both sides died but nowhere near the suffering Armenians have endured for centuries since the arrival of the Turkic tribes. Our only problem is wishing to see good intentions in them where there never was. Be wise. Keep your eyes open. You are not here to pacify and please
