On a side note, female bettas are less prone to mood swings compared to their male counterparts and are fine with other female bettas AS LONG AS THE TANK IS BIG ENOUGH. Those tanks are known as "sorority tanks" when they have multiple female bettas

Oh boy did you really peg the "angel" fish! I got 5 babies from an aquaintence and new breeder when I was just still pretty new to the hobby (early high school) and those little twerps were awesome until two decided to become a breeding pair. They killed the other 3 one at a time then moved on to my established colony of danios, plattys, etc. and got rid of them. It was cool to see them lay eggs on the rocks and see the newly hatched fry but dang.... Didn't know I was trading a pair of angel fish for my established community tank. Baby angels are beautiful, but nothing remains a baby forever. Lesson learned.

Angels will also eat fish small enough to fit in their mouths... this tends to happen with young neon tetras and adult angelfish. Breeding angelfish are fascinating when you get a pair with the full parental instinct. We had a breeding pair at work, in the plant tank. When I had to reach in to clean the glass or grab a plant and they had eggs, they'd attack my hand, never mind that I'm a scary monster many times their size. They were all 'must protect the eggs!' It was a bit inconvenient, but also quite endearing.

Heh, your mention of Oscars eating anything small enough in their tank reminded me of the only time I've seen one in person. Way back when I actually had a car and could go places, I used to visit a pet store near where I worked and look at the various critters. I had multiple cats at home at the time. (I still can't actually have an aquarium because of family issues, so I watch vids...). But, to get back on track, one day while I was there, an employee accidentally dropped a box of feeder crickets while I was looking around the fishtanks and probably distracted by things more brightly colored. Until I heard a little sploosh, and I looked, and there's this huge (I think about 7-8 inches, but this was a good 20 years ago or so, so even with my weird memory for odd little snapshot-like visuals I can't trust that) dark grey fish just looking happy as can be as they snap up every cricket that got in their tank. After the employee caught as many crickets as they could and left the aisle, I happened to find a cricket they missed. And, I have to confess, promptly dropped that bug right in the Oscar tank. I have I have never forgotten that fish. That Oscar was not colorful or flashy, but remains the only fish I have any clear memories of looking at when I used to visit that place.

Male bettas don't grow more than 3 inches long, and the females are smaller and more docile. Like most territorial fish, bettas don't usually mind distantly related fish, although they are renowned for aggression toward their own kind (among males, anyway), and toward the related gouramis, as the video says. Otherwise, I've found there are plenty of community fish I can keep them with, but there is one interesting exception, which is not even a fish: African dwarf frogs. I have never been able to successfully keep bettas with African dwarf frogs for very long. Sooner or later, the betta kills one or more of the frogs, and I have to separate the survivors. So even though bettas are not uber-aggressive like many cichlids, I can see why they are on this list of "murderers."

It totally depends on the Betta. One of mine had to be moved to a tank by himself because he was being harassed by a violent gang of killer ember tetras. -_- Sarcasm aside, embers are peaceful little fish, but they are on the busy side, and one of them was getting kind of nippy. Some Bettas would have rained down utter carnage on the offending fish, but Boo (yeah, the name is personality-based) was just getting stressed out by them. He's much happier in the company of just a few snails.

Ha, I had a great laugh at your list...., many years ago I owned a petshop and use to import tropical fish into Australia from Singapore. There was a very intriguing fish on the list (and a good price 🙄), it was called a "" Greenish Panther Angel", 5cm. The description was stunning. A beautiful angelfish with an iridescent green/bronze tint to them whilst covered in black spots...., 5cm (2") overall. Thinking these fish were cool, I ordered 20..., just to check them out. 5cm (2") was their body size...,, these fish were huge..., and STUNNING looking..., but man no fish had been more perfectly named. These guys were vicious with an appetite to match. They attacked and ate everything that was put in with them, needless to say I never ordered them again. (I even told our fisheries inspector (All fish had to be inspected at the airpport) to NOT allow these into Australia...., yes they were THAT nasty).

I had a male betta that liked to attack the aquarium thermometer because it was glass and I think he could see a reflection if he was at exactly the right angle. He also displayed threateningly at small snails. Gorgeous fish, but stupidly over-aggressive. When he got older, though, he developed a large tumor and couldn't swim as quickly. He was then a lot less aggressive and not dangerous, and got along fairly well with glowlight tetras and a pygmy cory (there was only one left at the petstore, and I never managed to find schoolmates for him though I tried) in a somewhat larger tank. He didn't like the honey gourami I introduced near the end of his life, but it could easily outswim him and did just fine. None of the other fish picked on him - it was purely a case of picking tankmates he couldn't bully. I'd never have tried the honey gourami when he was young though - he'd probably have killed it, and would definitely have tried. So a lot depends on your betta. If you're going to try somewhat questionable things like I did with the honey gourami, you need to keep a very close eye on the fish, be able to read fish behavior and tell if they're getting stressed or sick, and have a backup plan for if stuff goes wrong. I don't recommend putting male bettas with other fish for beginners, or if you have a healthy young male betta who's aggressive. And really, a gourami in with a male betta is asking for trouble. I tried to divide the tank, but the divider failed to work properly, and then I realized they were actually okay together given how lumbering the betta now was. So I watched carefully, and lo and behold! they were all right.

Came out with a one eyed alligator gar. 10in big, thought my 80 gallon tank would be fine, within 3-4 months it destroyed alll my plants and hated anything in the tank with it. When I got the fish, day one relocated all other fish into a separate tank. When I went off to college, had to donate it to a friend who had a 250-300 gallon tank. Be smart, do some research.

Congo Tetras, which definitely don't count as tank-m*rderers (and just happen to be perfectly suited for my 50 gallons / 190 litres). I anyway have had Bettas and my father have had Angelfish when I was a kid; about the first, male expecially really are unpredictable to the point I'd rather keep them alone (and anyway, in a tank the size of mine, I just have come preferring species like the Pearl Gourami, which I find much easier to manage); while about Angelfish, I remember them having gulped down whole schools of Neons and Rummynose, which for someone like me which has always loved small schooling fish have been sort of a "trauma". I'd like to try some Cichlid once I'll have more time, but I think I'll rather go with Apistos or Kribs, or even directly with Discus than Angelfish; sorry, but I've had sort of a bad "imprinting with them...

With their vivid colors, rowdy temperament, and with respect to their alkaline pH preferences, I think African cichlids are the nearest thing to a freshwater “marine” fish. Like, if you wanted a saltwater tank but without the additional requirements of saltwater setups….

I have two female bettas with 7 Glolight tetras, 1 Clown Pleco, 4 Ottos and 5 Nerite snails. I also had hundreds of cherry shrimp in a 20 gallon (which sprung a leak Christmas morning). Now they are in a 37 gallon aquarium minus the Cherry shrimp. I relocated them to other aquariums in the house. I'm going to get blue dwarf shrimp in the near future for the new aquarium. My female Bettas are pretty chill and well fed so I'm lucky I suppose. I may add some Celestial Peral Danios if I can breed the ones I have.

Female bettas arent territorial, only males are. Ypu can have 100 female bettas and they wouldnt do much to each other. Male bettas are territorial so its in thier nature to fight/defend their area.

I'd add another category you can't, or at least shouldn't keep with bettas. Fish with wailed fins, anything that can be mistaken for another betta. Fancy guppies, small fancy goldfish, some killies. Basically anything with long fins.

Yep, bought a marbled goby not long ago, only 5cm long, just to find out after they are predator fish and also get massive. A week after he had another fish in his mouth half way through. I was about to also buy a pikehead fish until I found out they get pretty big and they also are predatory with a big mouth. Lesson learned, do research before you buy a fish.

Kuhli loach (believe it or not) I have a few of these little "peaceful non-snail eating loaches" in my tank. Well... they attacked a mystery snail and a rabbit snail just last week. Luckily I caught it in time to get the snails into another tank, but yeah... I'll never combine snails with kuhlis again.

Peacocks for sure. I have a red shoulder peacock that has killed several fish. Beautiful but mean! He now lives in a 60 gallon with 10 tiger barbs and 10 buenos Aries tetras. Oddly enough it works! He chases them once in a while but they ack as dither fish and he has not killed one yet. It’s been 3 years so far so good.

Yes big predatory fish can bite off more then they can chew, I saw a fossil of a giant extinct fish that had died choking on another fish close to its size, also saw on tv a payara that was floating, it was choking on another fish it tried to eat, the payara recovered after its meal was removed and it was placed back in the water,

I just started, don’t know if they’re mentioned, but South American Pufferfish. I was impulsive and uneducated, and made the worst decision ever. I had brought home 2 of these puffers and added them to a tank with a male betta. I eventually stopped seeing the betta, and found him with no fins remaining.

For my 13th BD I got a 6" Arawana (sp?). We had Frozen brine shrimp to feed but my older brother had to buy5 small guppies to feed it. He added all 5 guppies at once & 4 were eaten quickly, but my arawana, it's belly distended like he'd swallowed a marble, had no interest in the 5th, so, my brother scooped his 4" long Jack Dempsey cichlid out of its tank and dumped him into my tank with my new BD present. The guppy died quickly and I told my bro to get his fish back in his tank, but he refused & A split second later my arawana's eye was in the cichlid's belly & a split second after that, so was the arawana's belly. I was so bummed that I left the arawana in the aquarium after 4 days it finally stopped swimming & floated! A month later we got home from a weekend camping/fishing trip to find Jack Dempsey on the floor dried up and stuck like glue to the linoleum floor. To our amazement, we noticed his little lips were moving and its gill was flapping. My brother tried to pick it up to no avail, so he got a glass of water, and a spatula and dissolved the fish glue, scraping it up with the spatula. He got it back in the tank for several more years! Talk about a survivor! Eye Of The Tiger!

I remember I was taken with Bala Sharks when I first saw them. I was sorely tempted to buy one, and I am very glade I didn't. A 125 gallon tank is much more than I bargained for. I probably would now, but again 125 gallon minimum tank size is too much. Very pretty fish though, and apparently not a killer.

Over all it's about space and balance . Yet I still tell me buddies only 1 male per tank I'm just fortunate with all my aggressive and non aggressive fish .. .😊
