One thing I’ve noticed about keeping Discus is the more you have the better. I once had three in a tank and the most dominant one killed off the other two. But if you have 6 or more the aggression is distributed out more evenly and not as stressful for the fish, especially the less dominant ones.
@martyborst5645
@martyborst5645 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Game Changer. Everything you said is accurate in my opinion. I had only 3 discus in a 90 gallon and boy did the dominant one terrorize the 2 less dominant ones. So I set up a 150 gallon 6 foot long with 6 discus and things are going better. I am so tempted to purchase 1 or 2 more. There is still plenty of room for 1 or 2 more. They are constantly spawning. I keep my water parameters good and the temperature at 86 degrees. I also keep my ph steady. It is nice to run into a fellow discus keeper! 🐟😀 Sincerely, Marty Borst

I built my way up to keeping discus. I did research and found that Angel Fish are cousins to the Discus and are a little easier to keep, I started out with 6 quarter size Angels and kept them for about 8 years with great success.... I was very afraid of the price if I missed stepped with the Discus. So after keeping those 6 Angles successfully for over 8 years I went out and got a new tank and 6 discus almost 2 years ago, got 3 and then waited a few weeks and got 3 more. All of them about 2.5 to 3 inches long (2 red pigeon blood, 1 yellow pigeon blood, 1 cobalt blue, 1 red checker, and 1 red eagle) I first fed them 4 times a day and then have now cut back to 3 times a day. I do 1 water change a week at 20% and change the filter once a month. I have just added 3 panda cory's and 3 otocinclus cats and 1 hillstream loach to keep the bottom clean. (Discus are very slow and messy eaters).

Honestly, i have a 110 community aquarium with Discus, Angels, Tiger Barbs and Bueno's Aires Tetra's (all fin nippers) and they're fine. The key that I've found is to get the stocking right, most fin nippers are projecting stress and interspecies behavior onto other species in your tank. You need to make sure you're fin nippers have a large enough population to keep that interspecies behavior contained to their group (in my experience thats 9+ tiger barbs, and 7+ Bueno's Aires. You also need to make sure they have room to escape and places to hide, so they don't stress nip, if your tank is too overstocked, fish get stressed and will be more likely to nip.

I love these true and false videos 👍😁 Part of my story as a fish keeper began years ago keeping Jack Wattley discus. Over 20 years ago, I really got into the hobby Head over heels keeping these amazing fish. The only resources I had was just one aquarium shop in a very small town and as many books as I could find on the subject!! It was very rewarding, but also very stressful because I loved my fish so much and It was a lot of work!! I had them for many years until I had a heater fail.. I have to admit losing my fish was one of the reasons I kind of got out of the hobby for so long!! I'm so excited to see how much things have changed in the keeping of discus!! Thank you for sharing, it's really piqued my interest for keeping these fish again!! Happy discus keeping and I hope you all have an amazing day!!!🙏🌿🐟🌿💚

Hi Mary Paige Flynn, I remember you stating in Prime Time aquatics that you lost your discus awhile back. I didn’t realize you were thinking of getting them again. That would be awesome! Just have a backup plan so you don’t lose your discus. A extra heater stored away and something that keeps your heaters running in case of a power outage. I bought a small generator for $450 just a year ago. I realize that is a lot of money. I am definitely not a wealthy man. So what I did was make a generator fund account and put a little money from every paycheck into it. It really adds up after awhile. Sincerely, Marty Borst 🐠🙏🏻

@@TW_Chizm To be honest, that has always bothered me as well. In the wild they eat small crustaceans, copepods, mosquito larvae, baby fish, insects, that sort of thing. Hey John, can you tell us "Why" you have a preference for the German species over the Asian other options? Also, can you tell us why you personally wouldn't mix the discus from different origins? Assuming buyers are doing their due diligence and quarantining them fish prior to adding them to the school/shoal, they should have adapted to your water parameters by the time they go into the main tank. What am I missing here? As always, thanks for the info. You can never get too much, especially when it's coming from people who are successfully keeping them.

I´ve over 30 years in the hobby, and if you just want to keep discus, even wildcaught discus will do fine in harder water. Just make the transfer/change to harder water slow (like in acclimatizing them in soft water, then do water changes with harder water). Even wild caught discus might breed in harder water, but the eggs will not develop. Keeping discus in harder water is fine, but when breedng them, they need the lower pH. Also consider how to keep the water clean - the nitrifying bacteria prefer a higher pH. At a pH around six, the nitrifying bacteria will have a hard time. With a pH just above seven, the bacteria thrive. Do not forget plants - floating plants are very efficient in removing ammonia. Ceratopteris is easily controlled, but even with the "nuisance" duckweed, the water quality will improve. This is especially true with soft water.

I would argue that its not that people are too lazy, but for beginners its too difficult to get the perfect water parameters that a discus needs. Maintenance is obviously a huge part of it, but just cleaning the filters and doing water changes wont keep them in the water conditions they need. You should do the same amount of maintenance as you would with any other fish, but granted i am saying all this assuming the person ISNT lazy.

Great video here is a topic for you. Do you really need to climatise your fish over long periods depending on the fish. I have discus fish always got them from the same place when I get the home put bag in the tank water for 10 minutes then scoop them out the bag straight in the tank no issues none of this acclimatise for an hour or so.Just look at how fish are caught in the wild the water parameters are constantly changing from being caught from sea for example to holding tanks then put in bags for shipping you got wee in the bags maybe poo in the bags all this is altering the water parameters then they go to the shop. It's an extremely stressful process. Personally all this about climitising your fish dont make sense considering there journey. Personally as long as your own water parameters are in the range for the fish your keeping I don't see the need. There are people that will disagree but it's common sense.

Good for you for rescuing your discus. Sincerely, Marty Borst. 👍😀🐠

I have one centerpiece discus in my tank, it's not really extra work just the usual water change and tank maintenance

Great infirmitive video ,but nothing was mentioned about water changes. I hear they need 2 or 3 time water change( 25 to 50 percent each time) a week. Is that correct?

Discuses have no particular environment other than the tank itself. Where they are located is adaptable to your situation. Discus can adapt to almost any environment as long as that environment has consistent elements of traffic, noise and your interaction with your fish. Maintenance, Water changes and feeding are all import activities that build trust. If you are netting your fish and scaring them more than necessary, each time you approach the tank your fish will be suspect about why. If you make the experience a good one you build trust. Plan long term for your fish so that they can continue throughout their life cycle to experience the same environment and not disrupt their life experiences and patterns. This is True with all Tropical fish but some more than others. Discus fish are in that category where great care in planning a safe and stable environment yields the best results. They are not that fragile, they just need your trust. Good Luck!

Having raised Discus for 5 decades, I can safely say that Discus are a-holes and tank bullies. But I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Years ago I bought 2 discus. Both died from hole in the head disease. Seemed to me it was because the parasite was present in those wild caught fish. Just bought 2 discus. I haven’t heard of that disease being a problem for years.

Need help!!!! New tank owner and I am currently cycling my tank. It has been roughly 3 going 4 weeks since I’ve started this. No fish have been added, however I have live plants and drift wood in my 10 gallon tank. I boiled the drift wood before adding to tank (was told to do so) and after about a week and a half I have noticed some cobweb type material growing between plants and drift wood. What is this and how does it need to be treated?

but the discus in the wild swims alongside other popular fish in the same water, like cardinal tetras or neon tetras, angels etc.etc.

I had a discussion pair out of 8 originals. They basically tormented the other 6 so had to sell them. A month later the female jumped out of the tank. Parameters were perfect. Male was lonely so bought 4 youngsters. One ended up pairing up with him. So had to sell 3 fish. Now they both live in a breeding bare bottom tank making babies.

Sounds like the hardest part would be having room for A large enough tank and also the electric bill for heating!!! Maybe someday ill have them, for now ill stick with the shrimp and neon tetras haha

Hi , need some advice please guys. Got a 300 lt(65 gallon) tank and got a fluval 307 external canister, which filters 1150 lt/ hr, but apparently thats not enough, what filter can I add on to the existing one. Plan to keep discus fishes in there. Please advise as I heard they need calmer outlet.

I am having a custom built tank to get started in the discus fish hobby. I want to have live plants and real tree stumps from a lake as decor. is more important to have a longer wider tank or is it better to have a taller tank. I asking because I wanted it in the corner of my front room I was thinking of 36"x36"x90" is that a mistake? I would like to have a 5 to 6 German discus in the tank with fancy tail guppies and neon's fish too

So what's the reason people prefer to keep their discus from the same suppliers? I know we touched on water parameters but that got negated somewhat by the statement that the temperature is the most important thing.

I have kept fish for 10 years but always been to scared to keep Discus. Don't get me wrong I do my weekly maintenance gravel vac, water changes all that good stuff but something always tells me I'm not ready for discus. I have a 180 Fluval with Rummy nose and Cardinal, after watching this I'm tempted to go for. Couple of discus. How many would you recommend for a 180 liter? I have 12 rummy, 12 cardinal, 3 Corrie, 3 Assassin snails.

I love discus but I won't keep them simply because I can't always keep up on water changes, and they are to exspensive to risk it. I'll just stick to angels for my feature fish in my community tank. They are tanks that can handle anything.
