10 things to know about keeping Corydoras. There is so much conflicting information on them
@alexgnav25155 жыл бұрын
The dropeye is actually not caused by activity on the bottom. It is caused by your tank lights, the light can irritate the arowana's eyes, causing it to drop to protect it from the bright lights and sometimes you need to cut down their food because the fat will build up behind the eye causing pop eye.

I love the summer time. I get alot of locusts and the rains bring up the worms and there are just bugs everywhere. So my arowana gets alot of natural snacks. For the tank i never fill to the trim i have 5in of air space and the trim is cushioned with the same foam used for filter so if he does jump it wont cause damage. Sides of my tank are painted so even if he darts hell know theres a wall and is less likely to hit it super hard. I made my acrylic cover to have latches so hes unable to budge it when he does smack into it. The things i bought are definitely worth it and really cheap.

Based on my experience, drop eye is not caused by the fish looking down a lot of times in an aquarium environment. Drop she is caused by eating too much food that are high in fat. I used to own a silver arowana in Vegas for 10 years before I gave it to a friend of mine. But during my care beginning when I bought it as a small fry, I trained it to eat just flakes and pellets. It might be hard at first so I had to starve it for a week but eventually they will eat it. I NEVER feed it with krill, mealworms, crickets, shrimp, or anything live such as guppies or feeder fish because of several reasons: 1) arowana do grow rapidly regardless of what they eat...stick with the basics..flakes and pellets are fine 2)live food cause water to accumulate ammonia because they get dirty, 3)live food could injure them during feeding because they have to chase it all over the aquarium thus injuring themselves from the glass and decor, 4)you are teaching them to be aggressive among other fish. Best if you buy them when they are all young(2 or 3) so they can be tank buddies for a very long time. Like I said, I had mine for 10 years and it never had drop eye.

Think of having a "drop eye" as a random genetic occurrence in all Arowana. An individual in the wild with a pair of dropped eyes would be like a *severely* handicapped fish that's unable to hunt food like a normal one on the top layer so, unless they can manage to scrounge enough food to live off the bottom (competing with natural bottom feeders) that individual won't live long enough to mate successfully and its genes will die out. If an arowana has a *single* drop eye then it will have impaired binocular vision for top feeding but can still manage to top feed enough to live. Plus, that fish may use the dropped eye to supplement itself by doing some bottom feeding if it's lucky. So single drop eye is a slighter handicap. Evolution would generally keep down the drop eye genetics in a wild situation but, in a hobby situation with feeding provided to each and every fish regardless, the drop eye trait is now being artificially propped up in the gene pool so it has become a "thing" in the pet trade. The aquarium environment is playing a role but not the way you may think. It's not acting so much on an individual fish in its lifestyle but on the entire arowana gene pool by interrupting the natural selection pressure *against* having a handicap. Nature would keep the trait rare but hobby-raised fish get fed by their owners so the drop eye trait is flourishing in captive fish. That's my two cents anyway.

Hello. I just ordered some Chinese food and while waiting I sat next to a tank with three full-grown Silver Arowanas inside. I fell in love with them, totally. I felt quite sad watching these beautiful two-feet long fish try to swim around each other, back and forth in a way-too-small tank. It broke my heart. After I asked what kind if fish they were I told the woman the tank was way too small for them. She said something and gestured at the space they were in and intimated she didn't have enough room for a bigger tank. It's full-on fish abuse in my opinion. These beauties need help. I thought of offering to buy them from her and investing in a proper set-up for them. To their credit, the tank was clean and the fish seemed healthy. I began researching what I'd need to rescue these guys. I don't know how big a tank is needed for these three large fish. Plus I live in a small studio. But I thought of donating to the school I work at. I am so troubled from watching these awesome fish try to swim in a place where they have to turn around almost immediately to avoid either end of the tank. Are there any fish rescue places near Seattle, WA? Maybe I should let this go, but it seems so wrong. I watched this video and dreamt of rescuing the fish. Please reply with any ideas or help you can offer.
