Most of these games were invented in rural India where means of entertainment were limited. Hence the use of no or few props. Gilli danda, Sattodi, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi (and many more) are all games that every kid in India would have played during PT (our version of PE - Physical Training) or during free periods in school. The pole, if I remember correctly, is for this reason: a chaser can only run in one direction - the direction s/he decides when they get up from. They can't turn around or cross to the other side unless they touch the pole. And since that takes time, it's strategic to tag another chaser to change either direction or side.

The pole is there for the chasing team. Since each chasing team player is facing one side of the court, they have to go to the end and cross the pole to go to the other side of the court, they can't go between the players to go to the other side of the court. But the defending team player can run anywhere they want to protect themselves.

We played it on bare ground and mostly players were bare feet. Our House remain champion for many years and we used to get samosa party after each win. You will notice that these games don't need much of equipments or resources making them so popular for us kids.

We have tag, hopscotch, marbles and hide and seek here. And a lots of other games children play(or used to) like -pitthu phod (you have to make a stack of 7 stones with a ball), -Chappal chor (one guys has to defend a pile of shoes inside a circle), -gola gola which is similar to cricket, -Gilli danda (also somewhat similar to cricket) -Murti ghoom (everyone rotates until the 'it' then they have to freeze and make sure it doesn't see them moving. And variations of tag like... -Chain-chain( whoever gets tagged joins the chaser and they hold hands making a chain), -Vish-amrit/Barf-paani (whoever gets tagged is frozen and can be revived by other untagged runners), -Kati patang ( it names a colour which other guys have to find or theylll get tagged, -pair pair(odd no of people run ans chaser has to tag the guy who's not holding hands ie in a pair) This list is not extensive, im sure i forgot some and might be unaware of some.

Indian sports are generally played for fun and people understood that the activity for the children is more important than the outcome. That is why you won't see people getting hurt during the Indian games. Even professional cricket used to be played without any safety issues and safety gear except the knee pads for the batsmen and the gloves for wicket keeper. Safety issues came to the fore only about 2-3 decades ago when Australia developed fast bowlers and they started throwing very fast bouncers with intention to injure the good batsmen of the other team to get them out of the game and the trend was picked up by Pakistan and subsequently by the others. There were many discussions wether to outlaw fast bowling or bouncers. In the meantime the batsmen started wearing safety gear and subsequently all teams trained their own fast bowlers so it became a level playing field. Now no one dares to deliberately throw bouncers or full throw with intention of hurting the batsmen as they know the opposing team can play the same game and no one wants their best players in the hospital. Therefore about a couple of decades ago you will see in the statistics, Australia winning most of the games and subsequently Pakistan too before the other teams got their own fast bowlers.

Kho kho and kabaddi are the most basic PE sports in middle and high school right from 1980s till now in most major states in India. And they are very commonly played on muddy fields in schools.
