This drives me crazy on long journeys with my Kona. I would not have a problem of charge time lived up to Hyundai's marketing (54 min. 10-80%). However, most of the year where we travel it is lower than 10 degrees. Then the time increases drastically and it is paaaaainful.
@computerbob062 жыл бұрын
I've heard you can do a manual pre-heat of the battery, by hard acceleration followed by hard regen (pull on the left paddle) for a few miles before your next charge!?

@@computerbob06, not so easy to actually do if you get stuck in slow moving traffic before your next charging session :/

This is why the New Niro EV could (and I say 'could') be better. Its disappointing that the max rate won't be increasing from the current Niro / Kona / Soul EV rates. But battery conditioning and a flatter charge curve could make it much more predictable and keep it in the 'acceptable' range.
@Mtatc12 жыл бұрын
Normaly you just have to start with 100% and drove it about 300 km with 120/130 km/h. Then the battery should be warm.

@@Mtatc1 under ideal traffic conditions it's possible. But if you get stuck in a slow moving queue for at least 10 minutes then the battery cools down too much when outside temp is 5 degrees or lower.

If you are have 16 C° battery temperature and SOC is 20% or more, the battery heater don't start. Then you get a very long charging stop. The first time, I thought something is defect, but this is a bad feature of the KIA EVs.
@Richard-io9xe2 жыл бұрын
Fascinating stats - thanks. The new version of the Nero EV will come with battery conditioning, if you navigate to a charger on the in built nav. They have apparently also flattened the charge curve to stay high for longer. So even though the max rate has not increased, based on these findings, those 2 changes could make a world of difference, yeah?
@apocrypth2 жыл бұрын
i would not, i repeat, NOT, trust this, unless confirmed by Bjorn or somebody else... they state exactly this for eNiro since the beginning (winter mode), but reality is far far from it, minus "navigate to fast charger preheat"...

@AsekiBekovy2 жыл бұрын
Assuming it is precisely being controlled according to the different battery chemistry at least. I am not sure about that. On a cold day above 70% soc our nissan only pulls around 10kW or less. I think it is a bit over regulated in that case.

I’m sure the Tesla “afterburners” makes a big difference when it’s -20C compared to Kia system. I think people will happily pay for the few extra kilowatts to speed up their charging speed. You could save at least 30 minutes or more at a charging station.
@apocrypth2 жыл бұрын
well if they made preheat button, simple as that, if battery above 10% preheat for x minutes button, it would solve this easy, but kia declined this...
@derMaulwuff2 жыл бұрын
Kia did optimize the charging curve in 2021. Hopefully they will do it again to get better charging times. This stingy behavior is summing up badly on long trips - and that is where you need the speed.
@apocrypth2 жыл бұрын
on which models they did that? As far as I know, not on eNiro, Kona, Soul...
@thomasczylok22692 жыл бұрын
I have Ioniq Electric 38 kWh - when having cold battery I figured out to "preheat" the battery with AC charging until minimum temp reaches 25 degrees C. When charging AC, the heater runs unitl 25 degrees C. After that I can switch to DC and enjoy faster charging rate. Question remains if this would be fast overall anyway.

Hadn't noticed the battery heater cutoff temp probably because I almost always charge on 50kW units so the 25C threshold isn't needed. Perhaps they focused on optimising 50kW charging speed
@austin2planks2 жыл бұрын
Update: just charged e-Niro on a 50kW and the heater appears to cut out when the min battery temp hit 15C. Mind you on a 50kW that's fine. 18 minutes of charging later temp was 22C :(.
@M0rd7ust2 жыл бұрын
To me, it's the combination of early cutoff of active heating and the lack of pre-heating which makes the car a questionable choice for cold regions. My suggestion: when you start a long trip at 100% SoC and just finished AC charging, the battery would be over 10 °C due to active heating, and it's going to be over 20 °C when starting DC charging after first ~300 km, so it's not that bad then. Go full speed on an Autobahn and the power will be with you⚡but you'll have to start charging sooner 😉. A plus when coldgating is that it doesn't make a big difference whether you approach a 50 kW or a 350 kW charger, so it makes for a simpler choice 😉.

Charging speed is one thing, but a similarly important factor is battery degradation. It's definitely not a good idea to start charging a cold battery, as degradation processes such as lithium plating of the electrodes will occur. Ideally, the battery should first be brought to an operating temperature of at least 20 degrees Celsius before charging and then maintain an operating temperature in the range of 25 to 35 degrees.
@stephenholland59302 жыл бұрын
That's why all EVs should have battery pre-conditioning as standard.
