Cheers for this video mate. I was gonna change the driving belts myself and leave the timing for a mechanic but after watching this video and considering my car, a 2004 kia sorento, had achieved the 200k mark it gave me some inspiration to do the whole lot at once. Belts, pulleys, sensors, water pump and hoses all replaced. I'm a mechanic oriented person but never had the chance/confidence to take on a such big task but it all went well. Down under here in Australia labour costs are incredible high for this kind of job but I managed to save quite a lot doing it myself and learning at the same time. It was quoted AU$ 650 for timing belt kit + labour (note that water pump was not included in this neither sensors, hoses and driving belts). It costed me AU$ 395 for all the above parts (mostly off eBay) + around 7 hrs of work split in 2 days and some swearing on the way :-) Good saving, good learning! Much appreciated video mate. Keep it on coming! Thanks

great video was very useful. one trick i did was to cable tie the timing belt to the camshaft sprockets and use a needle nose vice grip to hold the belt onto the crankshaft sprocket, then release the hydraulic tension and was able to get the crank sensor out.

David Swymeler Hi David and thanks for the comments. Yes, I would say that I'm probably an expert on this particular job..lol!! Everyone that owns a Kia Sorento seems to hunt me down and make me do the job for them but all in all it's really not that bad of a job. I also have another video on the exact same job but with step by step instructions. Funny you should mention that, I've been in the car business for 25 years and I'm actually designing a website right now that will be getting into exactly what you need to be looking for when you're professionally buying and selling cars in an effort to try to help the average consumer get an edge on some of these shady car dealers, They just don't realize or perhaps don't care how it affects people's lives when they are lied to about what's wrong with the vehicle. Then, that poor individual has to try to not only pay for the car but come up with thousands of dollars for repair bills. I bet they weren't upfront about anything and they didn't give you any kind of good price either did they? Well, if you ever need anything car related ever again or on anything you just let me know because that's what I'm here for man. Good luck and if you need any help with this let me know.

Question.. I purchased the individual Camshaft-locks rather then rent tool. (Made well, appear to work JAG.? So if I mark Harmonic balance r/Crank Pulley/crankshaft,Realign Crankpulley to crankshaft. Lock Cams BEFORE belt removal, with cam-locks, Must I go thru the whole-deal of locating #1 Cyl. TDC on Compression stroke? Or should I do all? Must I remove manifold cover to get to #1 sparkplug hole. find #1 tdc with compression gauge. Just want to "Keep it simple as possible" All advice appreciated! Thank you in advance

Yes please... So Something I dont understand is; BEFORE I remove timing-belt, I understand to install camshaft-locks BEFORE removing belt. What Im not getting is, must I find/locate TDC of #1 Cylinder AND locate all timing-marks to their proper-spots on cylinder head etc, etc,?? Using the comp-gauge B4 installing clamps and locking camshaft gears in tdc location. THEN remove timing belt? Im confused because if all is "looked in place" with camshaft locking tool, in my mind tdc dont matter if nothing moves and you align belt-teeth correctly? Heres my contact info.. Id be willing to somehow help ya with a little $$ if ya could contact me with this or if I could call with questions..?? Im on facebook, David Swymeler, two emails; davidswymeler70@gmail.com or herrenvolk62@hotmail.com. I can also switch over to my laptop and get web-cam out to shop/garage. I AM pretty "well-versed" when it comes to car repair, (I am a machinist, mill/lathe, cnc/manual, aerospace, industrial, scientific, etc. so I believe I can handle it. A little beer or tool money would be worth it to me if It "get-stuck and !@#$ed" and need guidance outta ALL the advice/videos ive seen on this topic, (KZbin) this and your other vids are EXTREMELY thorough! THANK GOD! Take care my friend. This Sunday is the "Startdate" for this job... Take care. Thank Much!!! .

Ya i ended up having to use the good ol starter trick myself on my 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.8l v6. The Harmonic Balancer was in TERRIBLE shape and had to replace it. Someone that owned the car before me did some maintenance and when they re-installed the balancer they WAY over torqued the Crank Bolt and even a large truck impact gun couldn't get it off even after heating the bolt. Oddly enough though i decided to try using the starter trick and it came right off no problem.

Out from the mechanics down the driveway to the city surface street, smooth road and motor shakes, loss of power, rpm gage jumping from 0-700 check engine light comes on, I take my foot of the gas pedal and the motor seems to go back to normal and the check engine light turns off, and will repeat again when trying to accelerate

Mr. Jones!! Fellow mechanic here and love the channel, the tips and the humor, It's becoming more and more rare to find mechanics that know the cars beyond the books! Id love your opinion on something, have an 06 Sorento 4x4 3.5 that I believe needs a waterpump assembly, however the coolant in leaking into the valley under the lower intake from the reaf of the water pump housing area. Have you ever heard of this?? Ive checked the bypass hose, its good, the orings are intact, the y pipe through the heater hoses is sealed (common problem of course) but It strongly seems like its flowing from behind the water pump, not out the weep hole, which is weird. It was taken to the dealership as it has extended warranty and they refused to work on it saying the head gaaskets, valve cover gaskets and 0 rings were bad. Believe me, they ARENT. so wondering if you have ever seen or heard of this. Thanks and keep up the good work!!

Hey, I loved your video and it helped me to install a time sett in the crank shaft. It runs perfectly except after a couple thousand miles the crankshaft seal is now hemorrhaging oil. Beyond getting back down to it and pulling the crankshaft timing gear, how difficult of a job is it to replace the crankshaft seal? I’ve searched and am not finding info on it, which is concerning.

You do not need to pull the timing belt in order to do the Crank sensor. If you jut slide the belt forward about 1/4 inch and get a wrench in there.

Thanks for the video! Good to see someone else under the hood of one of these. A friend and I are doing a similar job on his dad's rig, which decided to impersonate the exxon valdez. We're doing cam seals so locking the cams hasn't really been an option. One thing we noticed when we opened it up, the cam sprocket marks weren't dead on to the marks on the heads. It ran fine, but one of them looked to be a tooth off. On my Nissan the marks were wrong and the tooth count was the thing to go by--these Hyundai motors are entirely by the marks, correct?

Over here in Australia we call the sedona the carnival. But we never got this engine. Instead they suckered us with this 2.5 litre rover copy engine AND THEY WERE NIGHTMARES. They had bore sleeves (like trucks) that separated from the block, hit the head, blew head gaskets and overheated. Some of them had gone thru 3 engines before they were 18 months old. Cost them millions for the warranties bad gave kia a bad name. They waited right thru to the 06 model year before we got the big thirsty 3.8 with a timing chain (the one were the chain guides go brittle). They ended up as wheelchair taxis and they got HUGE miles out of them (660 thousand kilometers).

So, I talked to the boss man, and conveyed to him that I thought it was a good idea to suggest some options to the car owner. I suggested that at the very least, we should replace the pump. I also showed him that the belt, even though only slightly worn, wasn't properly tensioned... then I removed the belt and was able to show him that the idler and tensioner pulleys were a bit sloppy. This car had just under 127k, and I'm guessing by the condition of the belt it had been changed around 90-100k, but only the belt and pump were changed and the idler and tensioner, as well as the hydraulic part of the tensioner mechanism, all appeared to be original parts. I also showed him the sensors and suggested giving the customer the option of replacing those at this time. In the end, we ordered in a "kit" which had the water pump, belt, pulleys, and hydraulic tensioner. We didn't however change the sensors. This delayed the process by a day as the shop I work at is in a small rural town and parts are almost always a day out, even common parts for common vehicles. In the end the job all went well, customer was happy and car fired up running much more smoothly than when it came in. This was my first time getting into one of these particular engines, and your video was a great help. Thanks!

Do a quick compression test on all six of the cylinders and see if you've got low compression if you've got low compression in one of your campuses off if your compression is good then you have either a reluctor wheel or cam sensor something's off a little bit but the first way to save a bunch of time as just do the compression test cuz you know if the compression test is good your timing is good so then you're just dealing with electrical problem

Big Jim! Great job on the video & a Big Thanks to your wife too! I've got 176,000 miles on my '05 Sorento 3.5 liter. Never had it in the shop, never changed the belt or the plugs. Still get 22 to 25 mpg. I plan to take it to 200,000 before I change the belt. Is this a good idea & what is the longest mileage you've ever heard of someone taking a timing belt. A guy I talked to said 180,000 miles. Also, where in hell are the spark plugs? Thank you!

JamieJones TheCarMan ......Change the belt every 80 to 100,000? I would love to Big Jim but my Kia dealer wanted $770 just to change ONE valve cover gasket. After choking on that, I didn't even ask about a timing belt quote! Knock on wood, my Kia Sorento (05) has been incredible. When I said its never been in the shop, I mean exactly that. I'll post on here if I make it to 200,000 with no belt change. I'm going for 200k.....at 176k now.

Wow! I appreciate an engine lasting past it’s stated life and maintenance schedules. Mainly it’s a thing with KIA being renown for having weaker parts and a very low mileage maint schedule I believe it s70K on almost all. But this is not a bad repair even at $700 of all is done water pumps timing tensioner seals etc. Reason being a full mechanical interference timing and rotation system. Which means when that belt or tensioner goes and slips even or breaks. Those components are going to test metal to metal impact at high velocity and damage as much as. Heads and block when those pistons hit some of those 24 valves. Easily that whole engine could be completely destroyed. At 200,000 I guess you should be contemplating a new engine but trying To keep a fairly proper maintenance schedule might have saved you about 3 grand on a motor. Just be aware that a timing breakage is almost 30% of every major failure on a vehicle nowadays and ppl that don’t heed doing the extras like big guy says water pump, sensors, I even did oil pump (but was moving engine To another vehicle). They end up seeing a major repair and abandon it. Now your talking new car altogether money when $800 might have given young another year or so and still have a vehicle to trade in. Good job J J

Brad Cunningham Brad....I understand & agree with everything you said. Here's my so-called reasoning for going the long haul on a belt (etc) change. At 177,000+ miles the Sorento is only worth about $2,000 if that. So if I do destroy the engine, all I'll have to pay is a tow charge then buy another KIA. That versus doing everything it needs (roughly $2,500) and ending up with a car that is still worth $2,000 & may soon need a transmission & other expensive items. But I do appreciate your advice & thank you for taking the time to reply!

I replaced the timing belt on my 05 Kia Sedona. What A PITA. Same engine as yours but even harder to get at. The car is at the point now that if I ever need to change the timing belt... or any of the stuff you listed again... I am going to just write the car off as junk or pull the engine to replace the belt. That is the problem with Kias. I can change the water pump in a dodge caravan in 45 minutes, 10 hours for a Kia sedona. They really just aren't designed to be worked on.

Hey Jamie, Excellent video with great explanations!! SO I changed the TB on a 2005 Sedona and all went as planned thanks to your videos, however as I turn the motor to check my alignment marks are good, I can hear a tinny scrape sound that wasnt there before. I put the HB back on and ran it and sure enough it became louder and more pronounced while idling. I initially thought it was the crankshaft reluctor, so I changed the gear and while turning the engine by hand i can hear it again. There are no visible scrapes on the sensor, reluctor, or engine. So I then unbolted the cam sensor and nothing changed. Ever run into ths before? I just cant see where or what is making this noise. Thanks Jamie!!!

Ahmed Dari so the flat blade is called the reluctor wheel and that's what passes through the crank sensor to tell it when the fire that signal but as long as it was nice and flat and was not loose that should not be a problem you should be able to check the pulse where it connects out of the top with just a simple test light as long as it has a pulse the crank sensor is not your problem

Hello Jamie, update as to what I have done, I changed the mass air sensor and the car still had the misfire but it went away, ran great for the evening, the next morning at start up the rpm needle stayed almost at zero, and when driving the misfire was back and the rpm needle jumping from zero - about 300 rpm, went I let up on the gas it seems to recover to normal and misfires when again pressing the gas. Then when the rpm seems to be working normal so is the engine, please help with ideas, thank you
@jamiejonesthecarman
@jamiejonesthecarman 8 жыл бұрын
ok are you sure the iac is working , idle air cont. on side of the throttle body , when the car is acting up unplug that iac , if no change thats your problem its getting stuck , the iac controls the air flow at idle by being open just enough to let the right amount of air into the system. If the IAC is the problem you should be able to put your foot on the accelerator which in turn would bypass the IAC and the car should run normal until you let your foot off the accelerator and let it go to idle and then if the IAC is stuck the car would have an idling problem. Also a stuck PCV valve can also cause problems they're very inexpensive probably 3 to $5, have you check the air filter just to make sure that its not clogged up also are you getting any kind of code for the TPS throttle position sensor

If RPM reading is associated with the crank sensor, wouldn't you think that the problem (misfiring) *is* caused by the crank sensor, as you mentioned before? Sensor failing as it is getting hot?

ADVICE PLEASE.. I do have a 2004 Kia Sorento with a knoking noise two weeks ago I replaced the spark plugs and ignition cables two days later I was driving home and I hear that nocking noise whenI look to the cluster I saw the check oil pilot flashing immediately I stop to pull off road, called my friend who happens to be a mechanic and he told me to call a towing, the car has been in yard since them many have come to tell me it's bearings, lifters or something else like pistons slap anyway everyone tells me engine is done, I've research around and cannot believe it's bearings since the engine sounds good while idle but knocking noise it's when accelerating one more thing yesterday i removed left side timing belt upper cover and noticed that one side of the timing belt had no tension at all (inner side) my friend and I will be taking it apart sunday to see if the nocking noise can be due to a bad tensioner, bad timing, or something else easy to repair than bearings, any advice is greatly appreciated. I had my timing belt break on a 2003 kia sorento, took it to a shop and had the waterpump and timing belt kit put on. They told me it went straight into time but would not crank. They think it might bent valves, dropped it back off to me without putting it back together. How can I tell if it has bent valves? and could I buy the complete cylinder head to fix it?
@jamiejonesthecarman
@jamiejonesthecarman 9 жыл бұрын
Vicki Adkins are you kidding me, if the valve was bent the car would not turn over in most cases, trust me you would know the valve was bent , now the reason its not starting is going to be 1. the timing is not done correctly, if you can see the timing belt you should be able to tell if all the marks are lined up if you need help with that I can tell you exactly how to do it, neck do a compression test it should be pumping over a hundred twenty pounds per cylinder that way you know that the car should start if it has over a hundred twenty pounds. 2. the crank sensor can also cause a no start situation and usually goes bad when the timing belt does, when it goes bad the fuel system will not work on your will the spark plugs fire so the vehicle will not start if the crank sensor is bad. 3. the reluctor wheel could have been damaged when they pulled the bottom pulley off to do the timing belt there for the crank sensor is not reading it either or the reluctant wheels only about 30 bucks and the crank sensors about 60 or 70 both of them are quick easy fixes Please let me know how i can help you , i will be looking forward to hearing from you

elmer bico you can do it without taking the timing belt off, but it all depends on where your tensioner is located as far as how far over it is,if it turns out you have to release the tensioner its really not that hard of a job to reset it and put it back on , def try to do it without removeing anything first if you want to see a more detailes video i have one that goes step by step if you want some more detail

i have the same engine on a hyundai xg 3.5l engine as the one u did here. my car dies while driving on the highway or sometimes driving it around the parking lot and restarts everytime. elmer bicotks for the sub , ok so if you have a crank or cam sensor failure it going to throw a code , it will say crank or cam signal failure , so not likely it's a cam or crank sensor based on the fact that you can restart the car , usually if it's one of those sensors it'll be hard to start till after it sits for a long while then randomly start , so does it only stall when it comes to a complete stop, if that's the case then we're dealing with something involving probably airflow, the first place if I was you I would look is the PCV system, sounds like a pcv valve stuck open or vacum leak , also make sure your airfilter is clean , but let me know anyother symptomswe will figured it out jj

Jamie hopefully you can help me out... my 2006 Kia Sorento V6, it is multi random misfiring problem, it started while driving on the freeway (check engine light came on, loss of power) I exited the freeway and stopped the car, once I started to drive again it was fine, and then came back again and then ok again, Changed the plugs and wires with a local mechanic, picked it up was fine then 2 blocks away the multi random misfire is back again. Back the mechanic he now changes the coils, car drives fine for a little while then goes to multi random misfire again check engine light comes on during the misfire, as I let up on the gas it seems to recover and check engine light goes off, and does it all over again as I drive, please help, the mechanic says it could be many things wrong and does know what it actually wrong...

the first place to look is the grounds on the body , if u hit a bump causes random misfire , do any dash lights flicker when this happens
