Since we're playing armchair psychologist I'll tell you what I see here. I see someone who has struggled with their self image and self esteem throughout their life and gotten sucked into a society that is obsessed with body image and weight to give people their self worth. Because you got sucked into that worldview and hated yourself for your weight you became obsessed with it. And when you beat your weight issues you felt the need to: 1. Show off and humble brag to the world how great and beautiful you are now that you've achieved your goal, and, 2. Shame other people and villify their lifestyle to feel better about yourself and give yourself praise and validate your acheivements. Which I think is just toxic all around. I think it's great that you acheived your goal but I think it's toxic how obviously obsessed you are with body image and your obvious need to continue to obsess over it and make it your entire personality and show everyone how great you are. This is not an unbiased, scientific or objective view on weight and weight loss but the viewpoint of someone who desperatley needs validation and praise for their own struggles while you tell fat people what is wrong with them and how much better you know than them. Which for any field or any point of view is just not a good source of information. I am not fat nor am I attracted to fat people but the way you feed into our societies obsession with weight and body image feeds into the problem.

@@levelojaune have you seen some of her other videos? she cites scientific studies all the time when its necessary and most of what she is saying is about mindset, not necessarily the science of why one's metabolism and brain chemistry allowed them to succeed. She is trying to objectively break down the situation and explain why one sister is successful and why one sister is not successful. She is not disparaging any of the sisters and honestly if you view it that way you are not ready or willing to think honestly. What's actually exploitative of our culture is TLC making a reality TV show about people struggling with being overweight and airing out their whole life for the world to see.

@@ashalexandra6514 That's because she has a severe food addiction. Food addiction is similar to eating disorders, like binge eating, but is comparable to a drug addiction. Forget her sister. Tammy's weight means she gets disability and therefore has never had to have a real job. Her weight also means that she has always lived with someone who has to take care of her. The family said it themselves. Tammy lived with each one of them as an adult until they either had too many kids to care for her too or there was no more room for her or until Tammy couldn't get along with said sibling anymore. So if she lost weight she would lose her disability payments and have to get out in the real world and get a real job. And she would have to take care of herself. She doesn't want to do any of that. Its in her best interest to stay fat and rake in the free paycheck and attention. Being fat also got her the show, and the show money. I am telling you that any weight she loses she will put back on bc she will only lose weight in a rehab, where she is being forced. She needs long term therapy and she has to truly want to be independent. THEN and only then will she lose weight.

For someone as far overweight Tammy it was obvious she had deep emotional and psychological wounds that needed to be addressed. It wasn't just a matter self-control and discipline, she was a woman in pain and she needs healing in her heart and mind before any progress can be made externally. As frustrating as it was to watch her I sincerely felt bad for her. Overweight children are bullied horribly, and often sexually abused. They only talked a little bit about their childhood but the little that they said spoke volumes and combine that with the words and actions of their mother I can only imagine the trauma that she has faced in her life that was never addressed.

I think she says that about Amy because if she believes Amy will cheat, the one who is so motivated and strong, then Tammy 'knows' she "doesn't even have a chance". IF even my strong sister can't do it, I definitely can't. But she doesn't know Amy IS cheating. She just assumes it's happening. I think it's more a reflection of sabotaging herself than trying to sabotage Amy honestly. But the self-sabotage obviously comes out as sabotaging Amy. Yea, once you start feeling like you don't care anymore you still have to do it. You just have to be consistent. Maybe do less that day, but always come back to it. Force it to be a routine. Also food is really the main culprit to weight gain. Even if you can't work out or find it hard, just keep an eye on your calories and you can lose weight. Food is honestly the main problem.
@zalamael3 жыл бұрын
Losing weight is actually very easy if you know how to do it. Discipline is important, as is motivation, but what it really boils down to, is having a strategy, a plan that will guarantee success. The problem is, most people are ignorant of how to go about losing weight, and the mainstream advice is completely wrong (intentionally so). So when people who are overweight/obese decide to lose weight, they follow what is essentially a plan that is doomed to fail. And that plan is usually based around 'eat less, move more', where they restrict calories and attempt to exercise (both of which make people miserable and make it harder to follow the plan). In reality, the best way to lose weight is to understand how your body works, and then use a strategy that takes advantage of that knowledge. For example, insulin is the hormone that drives your body to store fat, which of course prevents you from burning your stored fat. So a diet that keeps your insulin to a minimum will allow your body to use its fat stores. That means you need to completely stop eating refined carbs that digest quickly, as they drive your insulin levels up to extreme levels, resulting in almost all of those carbs being stored as fat. Additionally, you will feel hungry again sooner, which will test your willpower, and often result in eating snacks that are mostly carbs, so the cycle repeats. Another example, is leptin, which is the hormone that regulates your hunger. Eating carbs wont stimulate leptin, so you wont feel satiated afterwards (so you feel hungry sooner). Eating fat and protein will make you feel fuller sooner, and it will last longer. So instead of eating carbs, eat a 16oz steak instead, cooked in butter etc. Not only will the insulin response be lower, the leptin response will be higher. This means you wont feel hungry for a long time after, and your body will start using fat stores if it needs energy. Another tip, is reduce the number of meals you have, and fast for longer periods (called intermittent fasting). When you aren't eating, your insulin level drops and your body will start using fat for energy. The longer you go without eating, the longer your body will be using its fat stores for energy. So eating one large meal a day, consisting of protein and fat with no carbs, will keep you feeling full all day, and gives your body a long period to start metabolising your fat stores. Contrast that with the traditional advice, which is to continue eating 3 meals a day, the bulk of which should be carbs, and do more exercise (based on the false notion that energy in = energy out + energy stored). That is a recipe for misery which will quickly sap your motivation/willpower, because it doesn't work and it can't be sustained if you are feeling hungry all the time. It will drive you to eat more. And the truth is, it isn't designed to work, because if it did, the food and pharmaceutical companies would lose billions. So they intentionally manipulate the recommendations (for example, the mainstream media relies on advertising revenue from the corporations, so they aren't going to write articles that would cost the corporations billions, they wont bite the hand that feeds them). So in other words, weight loss doesn't need to be torture, you can eat delicious foods without exercising and lose weight steadily (it still takes time), if you know how your body works and which foods you should be eating (foods high in animal fat and protein) and which ones you should be eliminating (which are anything with sugar, vegetable oils and refined flour, which can be found in almost all processed foods). Having a plan that will work makes all the difference, you just need to ignore everything the mainstream advice is telling you (the mainstream advice is the reason so many people are fat and sick these days, it if worked, we would all be slim and healthy). A keto or carnivore diet is the best way to lose weight, combined with intermittent fasting. It is all about controlling your hormone levels, and although losing weight is a good thing, the real reason you should change your eating habits is for your health, because almost all of the diseases that are killing people these days (cancer, diabetes, heart disease) as well as the 'age-related' diseases (loss of memory, loss of vision, joint pain etc) all stem from the same source, which is junk food. If you stop eating sugar, vegetable oils and refined flour you will lose weight and your health will improve dramatically. Our bodies are simply not capable of consuming large quantities of of these unnatural foods. That may be good for the food and pharmaceutical corporations, but it isn't good for us.

Then I met my husband got married and had two babies. ( gained a lot of weight and now I’ve lost it. 106 down! ) Things have not been the same for us ever sense I lost the weight. We are still friends and we never had a fight or anything dramatic but I can tell it kinda hurts her to see me now. I’m back down actually lower weight per babies. Thank God. Her life is the same as it was then. She had gastric bypass surgery and lost some but has not kept it off. I feel very sad for her. I know she’s unhappy and can’t see away out. I’ve figured out I can’t be the one to help her. She’s not open to it. I know a lot of people don’t like Tammy and don’t understand why Amy doesn’t cut her off but I get it. The feeling I get from her is that abandoned her.

I just don't understand how Tammy being told she will likely die in the next 5 years, lose the ability to live on her own or even walk, that her family is thinking about putting her into an assisted living facility because they can't give her the same amount of their time anymore, etc. isn't enough motivation. If being able to ride in a car normally, walk to her mailbox, and so much more isn't enough, there may never be anything that does it for her.

I really love seeing these compassionate comments. Keep being empathetic, we need more of us :) People act like Tammy is evil for not being able to kick an addiction. It's just another sign that our culture is STILL not ready to have open & honest & RESPECTFUL conversations about severe mental health issues. And food addiction is a severe mental health issue. Idk, maybe it's bc my dad was an alcoholic/drug addict for 35 years before getting sober, but so many people who watch this show and comment are some of the most ignorant people I've ever had the misfortune of knowing exist. I've also been obese and have nearly had a food addiction. I was eating probably 5000cal a day at some point, all unhealthy candy, chips, chocolate, fast food, cakes, whatever you can think of I ate it and just insisted everyone should love me the way I am and I do not need to change. Thankfully I healed from some trauma and kept the weight off - now I am at the top end of healthy BMI. (I don't solely use BMI but its a good place to start) Addiction is addiction no matter the substance. Ugh. I just wish people who don't know anything would shut their mouths (at least on judgment - encouragement is great) and let the people with experience speak.
@leifmeadows37822 жыл бұрын
Frankly, I think Tammy's concerns are valid. Weight loss is HARD. It's HARD to put down the soda when you've been drinking it every day for the last however many years and it's your go to. It's HARD to learn to enjoy healthy food. It's HARD to think about being hungry all the time (though I maintain that a proper weight loss diet will mitigate this, but set that aside.) I feel like people here are jumping on Tammy's negativity but that negativity is valid and it needs to be addressed by a mental health professional.

@Andrews cool 'numb the brain'. Do you even know how serotonin re-uptake works? you're regurgitating alternative-health, quackery-based propaganda that is hurtful to others. Many people have been helped by anti-depressants, even after they stop taking them. I would know because i'm one of them. Maybe it's not the solution for these people and I would agree. Usually SSRIs don't help with overeating. Therapy combined with appetite suppressants like amphetamines are way more effective. I feel like Tammy really needs psychiatric help before she can begin to lose weight. It sounds like she only feels safe when she is full and the idea of not being safe is so scary she can't experience it. This makes sense because it seems like the sisters went through a great deal of trauma and coped with that through food. I think for Tammy, without food she has nothing. Amy has a partner, a life, aspirations and goals. If she is hungry she can distract herself.. But Tammy is basically bed bound. She's alone with her hunger. And then when she's hungry she's alone with her trauma. I think she does have a bad attitude, but I also think she needs serious psychological help.

I think the dynamic of the two of them being that big did not help Tammy. It's almost like she had to absorb all the "being fat" and hang onto it, while Amy somehow freed herself and was able to lose. Whatever happened to those two women as children, that set them on this path, it must have been very traumatic. How Amy managed to get that nice, supportive husband is something of a miracle. I'm sure that helped her immeasurably, while Tammy not only has no partner, but is losing her partner in disability and obesity. She must feel so alone, abandoned, and scared.

@kamatari12204 жыл бұрын
I recently took on losing weight. I feel like what stopped me before was the same as Tammy, "I'm going to lose out on foods that I really like!" But when I started being Amy, when I decided my future and happiness matter more than that food, I was really able to commit to a healthy lifestyle. That food will always be there! I do not say I am on a diet because I want to train myself to live a healthy life, not start and stop something. I started buying healthy prepared meals so I have no excuse to get crap on the way home or eat crap at the hospital I work at. I get one dessert portion a day and I get one portion of an unhealthy food once a week so I'm not depriving myself. I've lost almost 9 pounds in 5 weeks! Next, I'm going to improve my water consumption and add in exercise. I've always had thoughts of "You need to lose weight" and "You are so disgusting!" but what really solidified my desire to lose weight was when my pilot cousin wanted to fly me on his 2 seater plane. He said he didn't feel comfortable taking me up if I couldn't buckle the seatbelt, which I absolutely understand! My cousins loves planes more than life itself and wants more than anything to share that love with everyone. When I started, I weighed 270 pounds. I am 5'5, so a healthy weight for me is ~130 pounds. I don't care how long it takes me! I will reach my goal!

The sad thing about dieting is people think that they can't eat what they like. They can eat what they like, just eat half of that. Then eventually eat less often. It's that simple. It's not what we eat, it's how much. The recommended daily caloric intake is 2000 calories. Less if you want to lose weight. Why is that so hard. Eat less, not more healthy.
@victoriawhite36624 жыл бұрын
Because she’s probably been eating 8000 calories a day, no joke. She did cut back and stopped gaining for the first time in her life and lost 13 pounds. But she was supposed to loose 50. Losing weight is simple(math) but that doesn’t mean it’s easy, she has physical and emotional addictions, I don’t think she will be able to overcome them on her own. But I hope I’m wrong
