Kidney anatomy and nephron function of the renal system lecture. Learning the anatomy of the kidney is essential when trying to under how disease processes affect the renal system.
The kidney is a vital organ that filters our blood. Various parts of the nephron are found within the renal cortex and renal medulla. The proximal convoluted tubule, distal convoluted tubule, and parts of the collecting ducts are found in the renal cortex. While the Loop of Henle is found completely in the renal medulla which (as you will see in the nephron physiology lecture) this plays an important role for how the urine becomes concentrated in the Loop on Henle.
The nephron is the functional part of the kidney that creates urine. Each kidney contains millions of nephrons that filters the blood to produce a substance called filtrate. The filtrate flows through the renal tubules of the nephron is reabsorbed and secreted back into the bloodstream (reabsorption) or out of the bloodstream into the filtrate (secretion).
Filtrate is created by the renal corpuscle which includes the glomerulus and Bowman's capsule. The glomerulus is supplied with blood from the afferent arteriole. Once the blood is filtered it leaves the glomerulus through the efferent arteriole which then turned into peritubuluar capillaries.
The filtrate then enters into the renal tubule where reabsorption and secretion occur in the various sections of tubules. Therefore, the filtrate flows from Bowman's capsule to Proximal Convoluted Tubule, Loop of Henle, Distal Convoluted Tubule, to the collecting ducts and then leaves the kidney as urine by flowing out of the nephron through the renal papilla to the minor and major calyx to the renal pelvis, ureters, bladder, and out via the urethra.
Other important structures of the kidney include: renal artery and vein which supply the kidney with blood and remove filtered blood from the kidney, renal pyramid (found in the renal medulla and contain parts of the nephron), renal columns (contains blood network of vessels), minor and major calyx etc.

I know your videos are directed towards nursing students but I have been really struggling in my A&P class and comprehending the material. I decided to look into videos to see if being shown/taught different would help me understand. I stumbled on your videos and took notes/drew pictures, followed along and not once did I lose focus or not understand anything. Thank you so much, this has really helped me!!! I love how you break down everything, this is exactly what I needed.

My dad was diagnosed with polycystic kidneys at age 17 (he's 48 now) At age 46 he had a bilateral nephrectomy and his kidneys weighed 4kgs each and were 43cm long. He was on Dialysis to filter his blood (he has a fistula). Today he has a transplant kidney and he is alive and well :) He was at 5% KF when he got the call and unfortunately I was working so I couldn't see him go, I honestly thought he would die.... Worst shift of my life but I'm glad he's ok now. I also have kidney problems, I had a double ureter partial nephrectomy. I almost died from toxic poisoning through the blood/lack of oxygen. The worst part of my life, I suffered from pneumonia and anorexia after surgery but I'm ok now apart for the occasional UTI and kidney infection. Strict diet though because I'm sensitive to some foods and still getting tested every 6 months for PKD Because of my history and my fathers history, I am currently studying to be an RN and I would like to work in the renal ward. Kidneys are life, treat them with respect !!!! Awesome video .xxx

Great video. Well explained, but my favorite part was how you brought up questions that a lot of people are probably thinking but wouldnt know the answer to, like why its called REabsorption as opposed to absorption. Breaking it down and keeping it simple while expounding and elaborating using easy to understand language. I swear these dang textbook authors are just trying to make things as complicated as they can sometimes to show off their expansive vocabulary! Well done, and I look forward to watching your other videos!
