I have been caught in conversations like this, where I thought I was so confident in my views. I couldn't stop thinking about what the other person said for days after, checking their facts, and sloooowlyyy accepting the new information. It's hard when one has a huge ego ;) and we consume unnuanced content. Whatever the topic, articles/pundits/etc. will conveniently ignore or grossly exaggerate the arguments against their position. When actually talking with someone with a different belief, their words are twisted in our ears to ring the bad-faith catchphrases we've already heard. This is why Swayze's activism is so effective. She doesn't brush away the problems with veganism, she openly and calmly talks through them. We're much less likely to say, "veganism is all bad" if we've never been convinced to believe (then found out it's not true) that veganism is a panacea or that we don't actually need B12 or that meat is toxic.

The sad thing is, this student probably had no clue just how HUGE an audience Earthling Ed has when she sat down to debate, and that the video was going to be viewed by hundreds of thousands of people. I can pretty much guarantee she's read the comments on the original video, which are mostly pretty critical of her. Hopefully she can take it as a learning experience and not get too bogged down about it. I said some pretty stupid shit when I was younger too tbh so can't really judge.

That’s the thing, it’s good that she’ll recognise using poor and indigenous people as a shield for her own actions is not acceptable, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she panics when she sees the video and the responses. She might feel she was maliciously tricked into embarrassing herself for a publicity stunt and double down on her anti-vegan sentiment out of spite, or she might be heartbroken when she sees a stupid debate she had on a whim has now been immortalised online for millions of people to scrutinise. Ed was right to interview her and post it and I’m glad people are seeing her being challenged, I just can’t stop imagining myself in her shoes, being overconfident and saying some stupid shit and then never getting to forget it… Maybe it’s the boot up the ass she needed but it would have crushed me

Oh gosh...I'm a practicing Muslim and am also a vegan. Therefore, I still don't eat halal meat. Ultimately, Islam encourages treating an animal with as much respect as possible, whether you're eating it or not (if you have to eat it, it should not be tortured or unnecessarily traumatized prior to death), but killing a sentient being will cause suffering. There's no great way around that. More significantly, and what I try to remind fellow Muslims about, is that to combat the inevitable suffering, Islam also encourages that people eat less meat...which no one talks about. The religion allows one to eat meat and outlines a sanctioned way to keep, kill, and process the meat for consumption (which definitely makes it near impossible to mass produce); but nowhere does it say you have to eat meat (or even that it's highly encouraged outside of holidays). At the time in which Islamic guidelines were being written, meat wasn't being consumed anywhere near to how most Muslims consume it today. It was a special occassion food because it had the capacity to feed not just several families, but also be provided as a form of charity during times of celebration to families experiencing poverty or other hardships. (Also notably -and obviously- folks had fewer means then and had to eat nutrients where they could find them.) This goes back to what Swayze said in part one regarding why traditions believe certain things about killing animals. It's not enjoyable, so let's try to find a way to make it as merciful as possible. So it basically follows, if you have other options, the most merciful thing would be not killing it at all. All that said, I hope this student grows to understand that she's hanging her hat on other people's traditions instead of really ruminating on what she believes. And I hope she's able to grow into herself and figure that out.

Interesting! I have an oxford book on how different cultures and religions have thought about the relationship between animals and humans, and found a very striking and inspiring perspective in old islam. It was something like "humans should emulate the greatness and mercy from Allah to humans in their own relationship with 'lowe animals' by treating them with mercy." Sort of like the "humans have responsibility for animals because we have power, and what will define our greatness is how merciful and good we use that power over others." I thought that was wonderful.

Do Muslims also have specific food limitations during Ramadan like the fasting time in Orthodox (vegan) and old Catholic (vegetarian) Christianity? @sarahnaithammou
@sarahnaithammou 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThingsYoudontwanttohear you're right. The only real limitation would be not eating or drinking from dawn to dusk. There are other things that are considered advisable regarding types of food to break the fast (e.g. dates and water) as well as being mindful of not overeating at night, but as far as types of food goes, anything that is considered permissible every other time of the year would be allowed while not fasting during Ramadan.

@sarahnaithammou
@sarahnaithammou 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThingsYoudontwanttohear that's an interesting question but one that I wouldn't really know the answer to. Most long-term vegans I know aren't very religious, so it'd be difficult to say. Christianity and Islam have more in common than not, so I'd imagine whether or not a Christian or Muslim might be vegan would have less to do with traditions in their religions and more to do with the relationships individuals have with animals and their ability to sympathize with non-humans.

So true, people who are vegan already have the belief that their purchases matter and influence the world around them. A lot of people scapegoat the responsibilities of their purchases on those companies (i.e. I'm not the one killing the cow, putting kids in dangerous factories etc). At least vegans have already overcome the hurdle of recognizing the power of individual purchasing decisions; this makes it much easier for them to hold themselves accountable for human rights issues related to foods. Why would she care about Halal meat/slaughter or respect/indigenous practices if she doesn’t believe animals aren’t sentient? Even when I ate meat, I never tried so hard to justify it, I just said I’m not interested in changing lol. 7+ years vegan now!

I’m from Texas and I’m not sure what she’s talking about when she said we’re taught fast food meat is worse compared to other meat. But I do remember one year in our English class we spent a semester studying factory farming. Instead of reading a classic novel like we usually did, we had to read The Omnivore’s Dilemma for our assigned reading and we watched Food Inc. in class. This was back in 2012.

Around the 7:00 mark he was talking about the people being exploited from plant based, NON animal farming. Like if he does or does not buy from companies that treat migrant workers unfairly and such. Ed is saying he unfortunately cannot say for certain if for example the company that produced a potato he bought from the grocery store might have exploited a migrant worker to harvest it.

When he was talking about supply chains, I think he meant like, yes we know where beyond meat comes from, but do we know where all the pea for the pea protein for the Beyond meat comes from. Or just buying any produce at the grocery store.

I have huge respect for Ed Winters - Earthling Ed, I think he does a fantastic job debating people and challenging their beliefs around veganism and slaughtering animals, etc. but I also like your points in regards to things he could have said instead. Nevertheless, it's probably harder to address these things in the heat of the moment. But, I think he did great, and I am fangirling lol. I admire you both, from what I have seen from both of you, you are both fantastic. Keep up the good work and critical thinking! I think you would do great in these types of discussions as well, however, I understand not having enough patience for this kind of thing, and that's something I am working on myself. It's different having these rational thoughts when you are not in the heat of a passionate discussion.

A large company in Germany (Rügenwalder Mühle) that mainly produces meat products entered the vegan/vegetarian market in 2015. This year, for the first time, they sold more vegan/vegetarian products than meat. The company's CEO said he will see Rügenwalder Mühle go completely vegan.

At 6:53, I think what Ed is saying is that we can't know for sure when we buy plant-based products that the company didn't harm animals in production or transport, but we CAN know for sure when we buy animal-based products that an animal was harmed. Using uncertainty in one case to justify knowingly doing harm in another is intellectually dishonest.

The only thing I can think with texas school thing is it's a misunderstanding of things Temple Grandin has talked about. Temple Grandin brings up that some fast food chains and chains like costco contract with factory farms and slaughterhouses that exclusively supply them. But that doesn't imply those conditions are worse and she actually states she finds those conditions better than average, which says alot.

I believe at 7:13 Ed is saying that for any given product, whether it's a pure substance made entirely of only pea protein or only fermented soy beans, or a mixed substance incorporating spices and different proteins and coconut oil and whatever: All of those components have the potential to be made by sub-contractors beneath the main company that you see on store shelves. I'm not as aware about food supply chains as I am automobile ones, which should be flipped, but with automobiles a lot of the big American manufacturers, Chevy, Ford, GM, Chrysler-Fiat, get parts of their cars from other specialist manufacturers. For Electric Vehicles specifically, a lot of Li-ion batteries come from LG/Samsung/SDK/3M/etc. For motors, I think a good portion come from Bosch and others. The main body of most cars however are made at the Ford/Chevy/Chrysler-Fiat manufacturing centers though. The car is assembled by those companies, but the subcomponents may come from elsewhere. So, *if we were to speculate* , for a Beyond Meat Italian sausage for instance, the pea/rice/fava bean proteins in that may come from Beyond Meat themselves or from 1 or 2 or many different farmers/growers. The coconut and sunflower oils may come from Beyond Meat themselves or 1 or 2 or many different producers. The potato starch and lesser compounds might come from Beyond Meat themselves or from 1 or 2 or many different producers. Etc. So what Ed is saying is that many companies that sell plant-based and vegan products don't make it transparent right down to the soil/water from which they grow from the ingredients in their products. And any link along the chain from production to assembly to distribution to point-of-sale to waste/destruction offers the chance for humans and animals to be exploited and harmed.

Just wanted to quickly chime in and let you know that when he was saying the companies are murky, I felt that he was responding to her question about whether he chooses vegan products that come from companies that treat their workers well. He was saying that there isn't transparency about that so unfortunately he can't know whether he is or isn't, but that if there was transparency, he absolutely would and believes that most vegans would also, considering veganism is foundationally a stance on compassion for all, and it would be a natural extension.

I'm pagan/Wiccan and many of us believe in animism. It has nothing to do with what she's expressing at all. Animism is the belief that everything has a soul/spirit, including animals, plants, and even inanimate objects. It doesn't have anything to do with eating or not eating meat, however; you could make the argument that if you do believe in animism, then you would probably not eat meat for both ethical, planetary and environmental reasons lol. But again, it's not a relevant argument. Animisim may come from indigenous peoples, but that includes both Celtic, Saxon and Norse peoples who, historically, were Caucasians. She's obviously coming from a hugely ignorant place about this assuming #1 that all indigenous people are BIPOC and #2 that they all believe in animism or that any of it has anything to do with her?

I think you will agree Swayze, people have a hard time reconciling that bad/negative/unfortunate/icky outcomes can come from benign feelings. I think alot of people like this woman think that if people are responsible for a bad thing they are deliberately acting badly. I think a lot of lefty jumping around comes from a need to state a morally right feeling position so they don't have to face that their benign actions can have icky outcomes.

I live and grew up in Texas and I was never taught that fast food meat is factory farmed and that grocery store meat isn't. I don't believe is even touched on in the curriculum. The only thing I ever knew about animal agriculture came from my dad owning a dairy back in the day and later renting his land out for cattle grazing (before being sent to slaughter...) so yeah idk.
