they will never forget because they lived it. Most people remember where they were and what they were doing when they first heard about the Emmett Till's Slaying. Those people, and the Civil Rights Movement from the 60s will never forget it. Because they lived it. However, were it not for the continuous documentaries, books, Social Media, newspaper and magazine exposure of the Emmett Till murder over the last 65 years, this tragic story could be lost from time. It was a bygone era where a mother or father sat their children down to teach them the trial and tribulations of living under Jim Crow. Unfortunately, this, and many other important parental duties, have been relegated to the class room. Where the Emmett Till account has been taught in every high school in the US for 50 years. ____________________ My point was that, unfortunately, these books, documentaries, and print media have been written and produced by whites. I can't even imagine how much worse Emmett must have looked before the mortician tried his best to repair what he could of his face. Until I read the comment Kittynakafima made about Mamie's interviews, I had only heard that the mortician didn't do any work on Emmett. All of the other videos I have watched said that his mother didn't allow the mortician to do any work at all on him. It is really disgusting that two grown men could do this to another human being let alone a child. The fact that they cut off one of his ears, pulled out all of his teeth, gouged one of his eyes out, fractured his wrist and caused skull and leg fractures according to the 2005 autopsy all before shooting him in the head, tells me that these men were monsters. They obviously tortured this poor child for hours. They obviously left a lot out of their story after already being found innocent of the crime. What they did tell was bad enough but I guess they didn't want to look even worse than they already did. I think that the Mayor at that time should have been prosecuted for trying to conceal evidence for trying to bury him the day he was found and the funeral home for getting his uncle to sign an agreement not to open the casket. Man am I glad that I live in a time that something like this isn't socially accepted.

This is so hard to watch, knowing some of it is so very accurate. That a child was tortured to death and thrown into a river with a cotton gin fan barbwired to his neck......I just don't have the words. I don't know about the rest of the world, but _I_ will never forget about Emmett Till.

Yes, it was hard for all of us to have in this film. I spoke about this issue with current national NAACP president Derrick Johnson back when he was president in Mississippi before I wrote it and after, felt better about using it in this historical context. In the context of this film, it strikes a nerve with us when we hear it and compounded with the other horrors in this film, it stays with us and hopefully this word and these actions will cease to exist.

I love the framing device in this film. The story being told through collecting the testimony of the murderers reflects how the details of what happened were and still are a mystery, because it was being gatekept by unreliable narrators. They believed what they did was right, and so did the system that acquitted them. Yet they are also terrified of revealing details that would hold them accountable. It's almost like they knew what they did and what they believed was evil, and decided (consciously or not) to suppress that knowledge.

According to an interview I once saw of Mamie Till, Emmett had a cousin in Money, Mississippi who was jealous of him because of all of his bragging about how different his life was in Chicago, and how he had actually been with a White girl. Supposedly, this jealous cousin is actually the one who told Roy Bryant about the incident in the store between Emmett and Roy Bryant's wife, Carolyn. Roy then confronted his wife about the incident. It was rumored that Roy was abusive towards Carolyn, so maybe she was afraid to go against the rumor, plus, according to Juanita, (the wife of Roy's half-brother, JW Milam) Carolyn hated working at the store, and she suspected that Carolyn used the rumor as a way of getting out of having to work there. Juanita was also there, but she was in the back of the store with the children, so she didn't witness anything. Juanita said that she never believed the story of Emmett Till whistling at Carolyn. She said that Carolyn never said anything to her about it until after their husbands learned of the incident. After the trial, both the Bryant and the Milam families were shunned, and the two sisters-in-law grew apart. There was actually tension between them. Juanita felt as if she suffered the scrutiny because of what she thought was a lie. They actually exchanged words at a funeral.
@Biggdoom3443 жыл бұрын
There was definitely jealousy towards Emmitt from his cousin but it was one of the kids at the store that actually told Milam. Evidently the boy was picking at Till, who in return clowned the boy and embarrassed him. Emmitts cousin actually told Uncle Mose so they knew what had happened, but they didn’t tell him the entire story. Untold is that there was another cousin from Chicago who left the next day. Emmitt s mother never forgave her family for not getting Emmitt out of there.

@@lb8471 there are so many twists and questions that don’t make sense. Why did tills cousin egg him on knowing the repercussions. Why didn’t uncle Mose get him out of town when he heard what had happened. Why did a black person turn him in knowing what would happen. Why didn’t the black men lie and say they didn’t know where Mose Wright lived. Why did till ignore his mother’s warnings not to get into it with white people. Emmitt did actually whistle at Bryant. What made him lose his senses like that? If Bryant was so offended by till, why didn’t she mention it to her husband until confronted. Why wasn’t Bryant’s sister in law, who was also in the store and had told the fbi carol was lying, ever caller to testify. So many unanswered questions. However Ms till was correct in her book...those I trusted to take care of my son betrayed him.
@lb84713 жыл бұрын
@@Biggdoom344, remember, the kids decided not to tell Mose what happened. But, wasn't he supposed to put Emmett on a bus the next day? Emmett wasn't used to the South, so he probably didn't take the warnings from his mother all that seriously. You have to remember, Blacks were afraid of Whites, and depending on where they were (and are), they were too afraid to lie for fear of being found out. Also, I understand how Ms. Till felt about the family failing her child, but she knew how the South was. She knew the dangers there. She knew the Blacks had no voice. After the trial, the Blacks that testified against Bryant and Milam left town because they knew the dangers that faced them afterwards had they stayed. Just as she pointed the finger at them, they could point the finger at Emmett because his actions changed their lives, too. Yes, he was a child, but they could have argued that he was still old enough to know better. My point is, there was enough blame to go around. As for Juanita Milam, she probably didn't speak up because she was a White WOMAN. You didn't go against other Whites, especially your own husband. Supposedly, it was HER husband who insisted that something must be done to Emmett. Even though she blamed Carolyn for the rumor in the first place, Carolyn could have blamed the Milams because it was J. W. who hyped Roy up to "retaliate" against Emmett. The other Blacks who helped Roy and J. W. probably felt they had no choice. Again, this was the South. They had to live there. Ms. Till said that she taught Emmett to whistle when he felt himself stuttering, and that maybe that's where the whistle came in. Regardless, what happened to Emmett should have never happened, and God has the final say.
@Biggdoom3443 жыл бұрын
@@lb8471 in the book the blood of Emmitt till which is probably the best and most comprehensive documentation of what happened, they did tell Mose but left out critical details which I guess is the equivalent of not telling him. Another thing they leave out is that there was another cousin visiting w Till. That cousin left the next day but I’m assuming that’s when he was supposed to leave because nobody questioned it. But as I studied the case I have come to the conclusion it was a higher power in charge. It was time for black people to stand up and Till was sacrificed. It got worldwide attention and infuriated people to the point it was the seed that started the civil rights movement.
