I remember how satisfying it was as a kid for Kim to be like after all of that bs to say to Drakken and Shego, “Boys? Dating? Oh it’s hard. But this, is easy” and proceeds to punch Drakken across the room. She is not saying that what happened to her was by any means to be taken lightly. She was dragged through the mud and came back fighting and for me, that was inspiring. It was hard, but she’s still here. Fantastic video!

Thank you for speaking on abusive relationships. My mother was in a very abusive relationship for 8 years and we had to move state to state to get away from him. I also remember seeing her get beat so bad that she was bleeding. After that, she became a single mother of three and we ended up homeless after she lost her job around the recession of 2008 and we were homeless for two years and had to stay with family until she got on her feet. I myself also in an abusive relationship back in college but it was verbal abuse and the SA abuse not domestic violence. I really appreciate you speaking on this. Also I was OBSESSED with Kim Possible back then and even made my mom get the Kim Possible sound track for me and the poster. I didn’t realize that Kim was in an abusive relationship once until I watched it as an adult. Just like I didn’t realize my mom was being abused and how dire her situation was as a mother of three kids because I didn’t understand what was going on as a kid.

Last time I saw the movie, Eric's behavior felt creepy. Mostly at the party when he keeps trying to gaslight her especially when Ron was trying to talk to her. I thought "Why is he so controlling now?" But now you mention how he was always like that just subtle. It is scary now that I think about how the movie went. This does need to be taught in schools because most won't get it until its too late!

Never thought about the Perfect Blue connection! Yeah being a cheerleader is also like being a Japanese idol if you think about it, too. Matches even better than ballet, used as an analogy in Black Swan. Cheerleading to me gets the spirit of idol fandom better, the fans being creepy and sexualizing girls, who are expected unrealistically to stay young and virginal forever. Since ballet is more "high art" than cheerleading, it doesn't attract similar crowds or a crowd at all, just a handful of theater snobs.

Steve Urkel hasn't aged well looking back x3 I could have accepted him ending up with Laura had he genuinely stepped aside when she asked him to and perhaps later on in the show, they got together. But he's practically there all the time, so Laura never has time to be away from him. It probably also doesn't help that Steve Urkel became a main character rather than the minor character he was meant to be. Had he been a recurring character instead, the show might have gotten away with having Urkel gone for a while and perhaps Laura realize she does like him and make their transition to a couple more believable.

Education is so political (I’m a teacher), sometimes teachers hands are tied as to what content we are “allowed” to teach. I also teach in a conservative state and I teach 6th graders. Please do talk about race in KP, also maybe a breakdown of the common trope of the "Black best friend"? I see it in a ton of movies and shows from this time period. They were afraid, I think, it was too "risky" or "controversial" to cast a main character who was Black. So they inserted diversity into the cast by having a sidekick be Black. So for much of my childhood, it was a given unspoken rule for the main character to be white, the main love interest to be white, and only supporting roles can be POC. This is changing, but notably now there's still a lot of backlash whenever anything has a main protagonist or antagonist be Black. (I hate the internet.)

So I do like that. But I'd never call him a main character, he's a sidekick and secondary Black Friend (TM)... It is progress in having more than one prominent Black character in the show, and he is a well-written character IIRC. I'd like to hear a take from a Black person about how they view characters like him as representation.

As a person who used to rewatch this film as a kid and recently rewatched it for nostalgia sake, I always remembered the reveal that Eric wasn’t real and so on my nostalgic rewatch, I was waiting for the moment that it would happen as his actions got subtle more aggressive because he was meant to keep her from foiling Drakken’s plan. So if I ever rewatch, I will keep my eyes open for the stuff you listed. Speaking of uncomfortable, yeah, I agree with the stuff on Shego, like on rewatches as an adult it is very creepy. As a kid I always thought it was villain and hero banter, but then you realize Shego’s an adult?? Half the time she’s with the new hip thing, so I don’t know if the wanted her to be at most in her 20s. Her characterization at times was all over the place. Honestly about the live action movie, as a long time KP fan, I never hated it and it is the most accurate cartoon to live action film I’ve ever seen. Sure, Drakken isn’t blue, who cares? To me, the film is a reboot and not a remake as some people would claim as in the original series, Kim was 15-16 at the start of the series. In the film she was 14, I think and was already fighting Drakken and Shego while in the series she meets them in first episode that was made, “the Tick”. A criticism that always grinds my gears against the live action movie was that it was ridiculous for Kim to be jealous. Like? Huh? Have you not watched the picking of the new cheer captain episode where Kim can’t let go her controlled perfectionism against Bonnie, who is to me just sadly subject to racism not that I realize it as an adult. Or the episode involving the jacket where Kim is jealous of Ron getting ahead in their part time job. Or the Driver’s Ed episode…I honestly never understood that one criticism against the movie because it felt accurate to me knowing Kim as a character. She can save the world three times over, but things like a part time job or driver’s ed were hard things to master. The aspect that was my favorite is she would always get back up and wasn’t always a hundred percent perfect. Thank you for this awesome video.

Loved the cat in the hat switchup! I remember when this movie was new! I saw it twice and it always made me uncomfortable. Eric was clearly very manipulative and nobody actually noticed (Ron was only upset that Kim wasn't with /him/). It didn't seem dissimilar to what I was going through at the time, and I'm not even old so OOF. Was glad Kim won in the end, as she would, but I guess that's what I liked about fiction. The best of heroes can be what we can't. Real life didn't always turn out so good. Another great documentary/film! Thanx for the food, cap!

I think this is your best video to date. It just felt really organized and well-thought out. i love listening to video essays on shows i used to enjoy as a kid! although it can get a little saddening, i find them very insightful and i learn something new cause 1) it's been a while since i've watched these shows and 2) there's always something that someone else picks up that i might not have noticed; so you picking up on this has me rethinking about the movie and the show overall. like thinking back on it, it's scary how kim was so popular that people from villains to randoms on the street knew who she was?? where she went to school?? like i didn't pick up on it as a child but now that i'm older that's.. alarming..?? what you pointed out with erik and ron is also interesting because when i was younger, i assumed that ron was freaking out about erik cause he saw through his facade - but it was actually because he was jealous. that's wild cause they (kim and ron) were besties, but he wasn't really thinking about kim during this, he was freaking out cause she was with erik, not because of what erik was doing to her. i'm also super excited for your shego video cause i loved her when i was younger and i'm so interested in seeing your dissection of her and her character!! (while on the subject on shego, she wasn't initially part of this plan in so the drama. shego gave drakken the idea unconsciously (if i recall, she was reading a magazine and that's where his idea stemmed from.) there was a scene where she even went to him wanting to know what was going on with his plan and he didn't fill her in)

The funny thing is I loved reading paradise kiss as a teenager, I thought miwako’s relationship was chaotic but only because they were not mature enough to handle the emotions in what comes with adult relationships because they themselves were just teenagers. Wow that’s good that’s real good. Very good point about Eric and the fact that no one suspected very proves how brilliant Dr Drakken’s plan was and how much research he did. It makes it even more scary if Dr Drakken succeeded in distracting Kim with Eric, considering what Eric was possibly going to do to Kim and if Dr Drakken won and how close was in winning. Kim Possible is such a good show and Kim Possible Movie So The Drama is one of my favorite movies. Just to be aware I’m male.

Man to me, Kim is kinda stupid with love. Like I know he manipulated and lied to her but if she’s our smart main character then I feel like she should have at least a scene where she was questioning Eric? Also I feel like Ron wasn’t the “best friend” Kim needed or wanted in this movie because nobody called him out except Ron but the only reason why is because he liked Kim. That to me is selfish because Kim was in danger and he was concerned about her in a relationship? I love Kim possible but this show had a little bit too much problems with it.

I could see why Ron was into Kim, but even as a kid I couldn't see any reason why she would be interested in him. It was around the time when people were trying to push the idea that dorks didn't have to change their behaviour to get a hot girlfriend, like Scott Pilgrim Vs the World (if I remember correctly). But this is just not true. If Ron was going to be her boyfriend, he needed some character development that stuck. Ideally you would have seen him grow over the course of the series prior to that point, where he strives to be a better person and grows more confident in himself. And that Kim has time to notice this as well. He can still be a bit goofy and have moments of dumbness and bad luck, but he needed to stop being a whiny selfish oblivious loser, and start to self-actualise in a more meaningful way. In the show, he never left the friend zone, but the show lies to you. Which is a disservice to the young men watching it. It should be giving them a role model on how to improve yourself - if Ron can do it, you can see the positive change, and he gets the girl as a result, you can do that too.

When I first started watching Harriyanna: [rarely swore]. Watching Harriyanna now: Fuck this shit, it's straight ass cheeks. I love it. Anyway, I watched this movie one time when it came out. I remember being unimpressed because I really didn't care for the Kim/Ron ship. I was already very tired of the trope it represented. That said, I'd be willing to give it another chance.

I wholeheartedly disagree. I see nothing wrong with Kim and Ron's relationship. It's not toxic. They cared about each other since preschool. Their relationship isn't perfect, but no relationship is perfect. That doesn't mean it's toxic. They cared more about each other than any other guy or girl they dated. You wanna know a toxic relationship? Look at Naru and Keitaro's relationship from Love Hina. Those 2 should have never got together but they did. It's fine if KimxRon isn't your thing but I like it. In my personal opinion, it's much stronger Than other love relationships in the media who were randomly put together despite not knowing each other for very long, or it's called love despite abuse, physical and emotional for comedic reasons there.

Kim & Ron should've stayed best friends. It feels forced. I feel this same way with Harley & Poison Ivy in the Harley Quinn series. These writers need to stop turning best friends into lovers. I feel like people only ship Harley & Ivy together because they're hot women, and it appeals to the male gaze.

No, Harley and Ivy got together in more recent times cuz they were always depicted as good friends. And Harley was in an abusive relationship with the Joker. So somewhere along the line they made Harley leave the joker and get with her the best friend. Basically they wanted to make Harley step away from a bad person and find someone better. So less about attractiveness and more about character development. Not all lesbians relationships are for men, plenty of LGBTA love the show. The trope exists cuz more often than not ppl who are already friends get together. In the Ron and Kim case, it was one of the earlier examples of such a thing happening. Overall, it didn’t get in the way or was overly detrimental story wise (unlike couples like Danny x Sam and Star x Marco), so ppl regard it as one of the better examples of friends to lovers. I can’t think of a single love story that wasn’t “forced”. There’s nothing inherently wrong with bf to lovers so long as you execute it well and many consider Kim x Ron a good example of it working. Esp with having a full season to allow them to adapt to the new normal

@@truteal Are you sure? She liked him since preschool. In the episode homecoming upset, when Bonnie kissed Ron without his consent, Kim would angrily go it took Ron 12 years to kiss her. Plus, they're going to be married and I think they'll have a healthy relationship. Ron loves her for her and vice versa. If you're not into the pairing it's fine, but I like it.

Honestly, friendships like theirs that turns into romance does seem out of character/nowhere and feels very forced. I personally headcanon Ron as a gay man with comphet and confused his admiration for Kim as something romantic and attraction. It does happen with every m/f friendships irl.
