The Charismatic Voice

I had not known how much Manowar had influenced the heavy metal scene. It seems this song is the unofficial anthem of so many artists, and I have finally listened to your pleads! Eric Adams has made the list of vocalists that have graced my ears, and I understand why. Bring on the loin cloths, swords and fur! Warriors, Unite!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Manowar for the first time, performing "Warriors Of The World United” Live.

Manowar are quite over-the-top in pretty much every aspect, and that's what people love or hate or love to hate about them, but one thing can't be denied - Eric has a tremendously powerful voice with insane highs and lungs like a pair of bellows. In the studio version of "Black Wind, Fire, and Steel" he holds a G#5 for 33 seconds straight. Not bad for a guy who's pretty much self-taught. And let's not forget these guys once had a 5+ hour concert. I should know, I was there :)

@@lexsodz Well, I'll try to explain it: I am a hobby DJ and when I play this a 2 in the morning, it doesn't matter of you are a "true" metalhead, poser, glamrocker, actual satanist or secret Scorpions fan - ALL of them enter the dancefloor, raise their fists and sing along together. The song is cheesy as hell but nobody minds. It is beyond being a parody of metal, it encapsulates everything metal is about in a comical but good way. It's a common interest, a guilty pleasure we all love to share, it has become the one song where you can do all kinds of postures without anyone making fun of you. I mean, the lyrics are all about uniting for a common cause and there is nothing more primordial in this world than warriors gathering to fight for a good cause. When this song is on, we are all brothers, regardless where we come from or how we look like. Again, it is as cheesy as it sounds but it is SO rewarding to participate. It could probably be a different song but this one started it and it will never stop to recruit new believers.

the artist known as Eric Adams had a 4 octave crystal clear vocal range at 17 and had so much power that in alot of places he didn't even need a mic. I remember his sister came into homeroom with a first pressing of Manowar -Battlehymns". I still have it after all of these years . While they were on tour for Battle hymns,. the band I was in would play "Metal Daze" as a tribute to the band we knew and loved who left the small town we were from to go to England and take on the Metal World with something new and exciting. They really worked their asses off since day one and after 40 years STILL deserve the respect they earned the hard way.

@@vladdracul1769 he absolutely does retain his range. the band downtuned since Warriors of the World from standard guitar E, down a whole step to D in an attempt to keep their sound relevant in a world of metal bands down tuning and using 7, 8 and 9 string guitars. one step is not a big deal for some people but in Eric's case its on the limit of his lower range. clearly he still pulls it off, albeit with a stylistic change on the lower notes which in metal is the scalar root and the most sung note in the song. he soars as much as ever when the music calls for it. always tasteful and within the realms the song and key/scale requires. my favourite metal singer of all time. ive been a metal musician since the 80s and nobody delivers the goosebumps like Eric and Manowar do \m/ theres Rob Halford who can produce some crazy vocals in the studio and i love dearly, Dio and more, but for me there's Eric and daylight second. I heard Manowar for the first time when i was a young teenager, what was over 30 years ago. The atmosphere, lyrics and specifically that vocal, all that together was one of the best musical experiences i had in my life. I find Eric Adam's voice unrivalled in metal scene. Combined with those lyrics about myths, heroic deeds and warriors from times long gone he creates something unique. It's like a journey through ancient times and lands. For a fantasy fan like me it is something wonderful.

I'm truly glad that you, at last, had decided to analyze some Manowar music. Nevertheless, although this is currently the main "official anthem" of Manowar you should cover other songs that are far better than this, as some people are recommending you, as: Mountains, Gates of Walhalla, March for Revenge, Revelations, Secret of Steel, Bridge of Death, Battle Hymns, Spirit Horse of the Cherokee, Master of the Wind, Defender, Heart of Steel and many others. Additionally, I wonder if you have heard before of another band very like Manowar called Virgin Steele. That's Barbaric Romantic Metal, as they say they sing. Very bright singer with a nice voice, with a very high and very low vocal ranges and very symphonic and epic and operistic songs.

It's even better, when you realize that the character Eric Adams is playing here is (probably) Conan. Like, the actual barbarian created by Robert E. Howard in the 1930s. Here is a quote from "The Phoenix on the Sword": "Rush and die, dogs - I was a man before I was a king!" Anyway, Eric Adams is my favorite singer and he has been my favorite singer since about 20 years ago, when I stumbled upon "Kings of Metal" - which, btw, is an incredible work of art. (Power metal is what it is - to a huge extent - because of that album.) If there is one thing that any young metal singer can and should learn from him, it's that if you take care of your voice, you will still sound great in your 60s or even your 70s. He's lost some of the high notes that he could reach in his 30s, but, other than that, he's kept his voice just as powerful as it was back then. Maybe the fact that he's never lived the life of a rock star helps. He is a professional hunter. He's never attracted attention with partying, doing drugs, etc.
@Crytica.

Eric Adams is in my opinion one of the best "word painters" there is. He sings the emotion behind words very wel. When he says 'angry' he actually pronounces it in an angry way. When he sings about something glorious he sings it in an epic way. He literally paints the meaning of the words with his voice and that's something not a lot of vocalists do or think of doing yet it adds so much to the songs, very captivating!

There are more bands that are influenced by Manowar than would admit it. Bathory pretty clearly borrowed equal parts of Venom and Manowar in forging what would become "viking metal" - a lot of bands would credit Bathory for that shtick, but Manowar did it first, would have been the first band most metal musicians over the decades heard doing it, and is still one of the best at it to this day.

Gates of Valhalla* *3. Courage (just because I love cheesy power ballads - and because it's a great song :D)*

The first to explain the name MANOWAR is MAN -O-WAR, the name goes back to a historical name for the largest wooden sailing ships ever built, the Shipp of the Lines such as the famous HMS Viktoria, these floating fortresses were feared and respected by the sailors of the 17th century they were given the nickname MAN OF WAR and in Semanic usage the OF was always pronounced like the Gaelic /Irish `O`, so MAN-O`-WAR because you saw a hostile MAN O WAR on the horizon that meant certain death ....Eric adams is one of the greatest metal stim icons who had an opera training. His folk songs are just as impressive and extremely haunting with an incredible power and feeling ... as well as one of the best operas in metal history "Phantom of the Opera" Live not even Nighwisch and taria can that top that should you listen to yourself without hesitation !!!!!

The performance is 15 years old at this point (if not more), and Maria Breon is no Floor Jansen, but the performance shows off Adams' low range and demonstrates his acumen nicely. Haha! Amazing! Elizabeth couldn't hide her "eargasms", even if she wanted to. :D Those rolled up, half closed and twitching eyes are a straight giveaway. :D Gotta love to see how much she feels and loves all kinds of good music!

House of Death is probably one of my favorite Eric Adams moments. Manowar gets so much hate, but you cannot deny Adams' talent. Dude is insane good.

Eric Adams is easily one of the best technical singers in metal.

Manowar... To evaluate the voice, all its magic, my favorites: "Nessun Dorma" live Master of the wind and especially, Hail and Kill I am a long time fan of Manowar music. I was amazed once with their video at rehersal with Chech orchestra prior to the concert. The power of the voice and emotions. AT REHERSAL!

He is great, you have to hear Battle Hymn, one of the best vocals ever.

In addition of Eric’s version of “Nessun dorma” I suggest to check the video of “Battle Hymns” live at “the day the earth shook”: 3 drummers, 3 guitarists, 50 member Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra and a superb interpretation by Eric Adams.

Was just about to post about the same “Battle Hymns” live show as well. It’s my favorite Manowar song and it’s epic and makes you want to ride into battle! I believe it’s tuned down a full step compared to the studio version and I’m not sure if that’s because Eric Adams was struggling vocally to hit some of the higher notes or not although towards the end he certainly does even though they are down tuned. Also, you mentioned “Nessus Dorma” which is another good call. Elizabeth already covered Pavarotti’s version so it would be interesting to her thoughts on a metal singer’s rendition.

I'm so, so happy, you did a video on Manowar! 😍🤘 Growing up undiagnosed Autistic, Manowar really empowered me throughout my childhood and teenage years, and they were the first metal band I got introduced to (Wheels of Fire, one of their hardest and fastest songs), and I was just bound by their fantasy stories of battle, and I identified so strongly with them. Watching this video makes me so happy! I absolutely love your content; I just found you on my suggestion page & have now seen almost 10 videos from you, and I love every single one of them! ❤️ Thank you! 🥰

It's amazing how this band can bring together nations the way that they do, all under the metal flag. This show was 33 years after they got started, so, although his voice has aged wonderfully and he's able to pull off awesome performances, i'd be curious to see your take on some of the younger years. Their cover of Nessun Dorma, Heart of steel, Gods of War (More of the epic feel). Happy discovery!
