Actually "kurwa" is a very versatile word in polish (idk about russian, but I bet it's pretty similar). People can use it to insult others, express shock, happiness, disbelief. Hell, some people use it as a replacement to a comma, basicly using it at every opportunity. Again, I don't know how it works in Russia, but in Poland it's impossible to spend 5 minutes on a crowded sidewalk and not hear this word at least 2-4 times in this time period. If my grammar isn't perfect I'm sorry, but english isn't my first language so I may have made some mistakes. But I hope my explenation helped you a little bit ;)
