"Just kids, man. Just babies!" Yep. That's why we frequently refer to the band as they appeared on and just after _The Sing-Off_ as "Babytonix." Mitch actually had to miss his high school graduation ceremony to audition for _The Sing-Off._ Scott and Kirstie both dropped out of college after just one year so they could put everything they had into this insane venture. And then they made it work, even after Sony dropped them just one week into the recording contract they'd "won." Impressive.

Most people who followed them from the very first moment of that season of The Sing Off point to this as the moment they fully embraced their potential and actually became the stars that they had only shown flashes of in the previous weeks. You can almost, 100%, draw a line between performance 11 and this one and say, weeks 1 through 11 were PTX finding themselves. Week 12 and forward were PTX taking the entire world by storm and putting acapella music firmly back on the map in a huge way.

Well, we don't know yet, do we? As I respond to you it is November of 2022. The trio are 30 years old. Scott is engaged to be married (and appears to be over-the-moon in love). Kirstie had her first baby, Elliana Violet (Evie for short) on June 28th (mother and daughter are both well). Pentatonix has engaged in 11 years of surprising the world, from _The Wizard of Ahhhs_ to _Imagine_ to _Aha! Star Vista_ to _Bohemian Rhapsody_ to _The Prayer_ and _Prayers For This World._ I anticipate *at least* another 30 years of surprises from them, and I expect every one of those surprises to be beautiful.

There was an acapella competition judge who was writing post-episode critiques of all of the performances for a college acapella organization website (sadly no longer available) who would get all technical with his comments. I don’t remember the details of what chords were being used where, but his overall reaction to this one was basically, “Collective mic drop, walk off the stage in triumph.” He started calling them a dark horse to win after “Video Killed,” and then called them to win after the following week and their hip hop song.

I didn't get to watch this season of The SingOff but you have to guess that the other contestants just looked at each other and said "Well, we just lost!" because I can't imagine that there was anyone even close to this. It has indeed been fun to watch this group come together and grow (which probably happened more rapidly than usual and the judges critiques were probably very valuable in letting them have quality feedback as they put it all together) and gain confidence. Yeah, there are, they have "become" the amazing unit they are today.

Great reaction! Yes, that was Avi's overtone singing, and he's doing his bass note at the same time! Mitch's voice here was so beautiful, it gives me the feels every time. There are two more performances before they announce the winner - #13 Without You and #14 Una Noche. They had been doing this weekly for months, and were a bit exhausted, but both performances are worth listening to. I hope you react to them, too.

As I've earlier said, this was the ultimate mic drop...plus the performance where they finally unleashed the Mitch beast (it was actually VERY brilliant for them to hold him back until this moment)! Beginning with #11, TV audiences started voting on the performances. #12 was the last to be actually judged, but NOT the last performances of this season. #13-14 both appeared on the live finale night and were strictly voted on by the TV audiences. You actually have THREE more to go, because 13 & 14 are on separate videos, as is the winning announcement, which also includes Pentatonix singing the champion's song.
@luinrina3 жыл бұрын
Did #13 and #14 still count in the voting? I've so far always only read that the voting closed before the finale went live and that the last two performances didn't actually matter anymore as the winner was already found at that point, just not yet announced until at the end of finale night. I've never seen the full episodes, only the clips on mrduckbear11's channel, so I'm curious about the voting process and if what I've read so far was false.
@kathyastrom13153 жыл бұрын
Actually, both #11 and this one were performed on the final pre-taped episode before the live finale. As soon as this episode was over and they announced the phone numbers, I was on the phone calling in all of my votes for Pentatonix! The first time I ever did that, btw.

I find it so hard to watch "Without You", as they were all exhausted and depleted, Scott had lost his voice that morning and barely made it through "Dog Days", and apparently the sound was messing up so that they couldn't hear each other. You can tell. It's a bit painful to listen to.
@kathyastrom13153 жыл бұрын
@@charlottevan_8 The problem with “Without You” was that it was their first on the live show after being gone for a few months. They had recovered from the taped shows, but the crew hadn’t figured out the correct mic balance and all of the early performances on that live show suffered. By the time they did the song with Nic, the crew got it right.
@margretrosenberg4202 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, it wasn't so much that they held Mitch back until this performance as that the producers were pressuring them to hold him back. Mitch and Scott were both out of the closet, and the producers knew it, but that wasn't something that they wanted to be made public on their show. They weren't terribly worried about it with Scott, but Mitch's high notes, in their minds, made him effeminate and raised questions about his sexuality. (And I have trans friends who would be delighted if this were really the way voices work, but it isn't.) So for this season (and only this one) the producers were saying that each group needed to have *one* lead singer, and only one. For Pentatonix they'd said that the lead had to be Scott. PTX had been gradually pushing back at this all season, with Kirstie taking more of the lead whenever they could make that work, but they still hadn't had a chance to reveal Mitch's voice, which was a major part of the reason they were there. In their 12th performance it was time. They were pretty much past the place where they could be penalized for it, and there weren't going to be any more chances, so they put everything into making it happen. And fortunately, the producers hadn't let the judges in on what they were doing or why, so the judges responded appropriately. Next time you watch this, look at the way they all gather around Mitch at the end of the performance, supporting his journey. And watch Kirstie. Mitch is in the center of a group hug with all of the men in the band, and Kirstie can't quite figure out how to get into it, so she reaches out to grip Mitch's elbow and does a little celebratory dance. For Kirstie, this was *the* reason they were there - to get *Mitch's* incredible talent recognized. It would be at least a couple more years before Kirstie began to accept the fact that she, also, is incredibly talented and began to see herself as a full and equal member of Pentatonix. At this moment, however, Kirstie was totally happy with what they'd just pulled off. Her major goal had been accomplished.

One thing I want to mention is that, up through this performance, the audience members who were not previously eliminated groups or family members were all hearing Pentatonix for the first time each week. The signs were made by production and handed to the audience when they were seated, but they didn’t know who they were cheering for. I would guess that by the time this episode was taped, the local LA colleges were back in session, so they probably had lots of collegiate singers eager to attend a taping. If other people in their circle had attended an earlier taping, they might have been warned to pay attention to one group in particular.

There are actually three songs from the finale night: Without You, Give Me Just One Night which they sang with host Nick Lachey (rather than one of the judges), and their victory song Eye of the Tiger. Of course, the announcement of who placed third and then crowning the winner is a video in itself and definitely worth watching, if only to see what they went through emotionally in those final moments before their name was announced as winner. Eye of the Tiger starts playing at the outro, but for the full song, check this link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2GYdaRoaN-Vp8U And following that is of course their return for the season 4 finale with I Need Your Love.

When you watch the winner announcement video, you'll see a group of people in the audience wearing matching yellow t-shirts. They're the families and friends, including Avi's dad Michael at the front (Avi's high school voice teacher who mentored and urged him to go into voice and opera in college was there, too). So when you see them go crazy upon the announcement, that's why.

There are some people that think they have it easy because they are only 5 people, but actually it means they have to work so much harder to create full sound for their part and they are never doing the same part. That requires so much confidence, musicianship, and gravitas that they really did more than the other groups. There is no where to hide and they are exposed, but the payoff if they do it perfectly means their sound will always be more crisp and engaging than a larger doubled group .

This was the last competition song. At the end of the night the #4 team was eliminated and the voting among the top 3 was thrown open to the viewing public, results to be announced a week later. (That was my only worry -- did the US viewers love PTX as much as the judges and I did?) The judges' remarks at the start of this video always make me laugh: Clearly, as well as being asked to talk about the group's commercial potential, they were prompted to try to create SOME kind of suspense going into the finale. So Shawn "worried" if they would get too esoteric, Ben "wondered" if they would run out of tricks... and obviously neither of them had any real doubts at all.

But how ironic that after winning the competition and the recording contract, the label cancelled the contract because they didn't think acapella music would "sell" or be popular mainstream! Bad on them. Kudos to Pentatonix for sticking with it and dreaming big.
@DelGuy033 жыл бұрын
@@wendischambach6181 It's a little more complicated than that, though the corporate feeling that a cappella didn't sell was true enough (and, alas, supported by previous sales figures). PTX were never without a label. Sony didn't "drop" them -- they demoted them from the Epic label to Madison Gate, a minor label that mostly did compilation soundtracks, and left them to their own devices for planning and promotion. But when they did come up with their material, they were able to record and release them through Madison Gate, and their first albums appeared on that label. Eventually Sony offered them a new contract that would move them from Madison Gate to RCA, and they held out for a more favorable contract than they'd originally had. Their earlier stuff then got REreleased on RCA.

They voted all the way through performance 12. Performances 13 & 14 were not voted on, they're just for the top 3 to show their final choices to fans before the winner announcement. One of those performances is where the group gets to choose 1 of the judges to sing with, but PTX actually asked for an exception & chose the announcer Nick because they wanted their #14 to be the bilingual song Una Noche (one of his band's big hits) to show off Kirstie singing in Spanish & let her do her "sexy" voice/ be more feminine because she didn't get to show that side of herself much. So at the end of the show with performance 11 & 12, the top 3 are announced for the finale, but aren't told what place they got because of course the drama of the reveal needs to be filmed. On the finale, after the winner announcement, the 2nd & 3rd place each get to sing a little bit as a "goodbye" as they leave the stage & then the winner gets to perform their full "victory" #15 performance. Then the winner gets invited back for a Christmas special between seasons, so that's sort-of #16 by them. Then they get to come back as guests on the next season once or twice, which is how PTX got to know Home Free just as they were all getting started on building their careers. Just a note about the finale night: for some reason, someone (I'm tempted to insult a stranger, but won't despite that they failed big considering what this show was & how important a thorough sound check is) had communication issues on which things on the checklist were done fully or less experienced people doing the pre-show sound checks, or something. It turned out there was an issue with the sound, in more ways than 1. So when PTX (& I think the other groups had issues too) started their 1st song of the night, they happened to be set up not side by side so that they could look at each other without turning, but angled outward in a circle. They started singing to discover that their earpieces weren't working. They couldn't hear themselves to be sure they were on key & synced, & had to quickly fall back on just listening to what they could hear around the earpieces, so that song had a rough start since they didn't sound as cohesive & confident as normal til they each quickly realized it wasn't just them. Also, I think their mics weren't balanced right for the audience either. But since it was being filmed live they couldn't delay the schedule. The issues quickly started being fixed behind the scenes & during the breaks between 1st & 2nd songs, then everything was great after that.

I've heard/read rumors about this performance and Mitch's solo. Supposedly (uncorroborated by me) the producers had asked the group to keep Mitch in the background because of concerns about controversy over his sexuality, and that the group decided collectively on this final competition performance to tell the producers to go screw themselves by giving Mitch such a prominent solo. Supposedly all the glomming on Mitch at the end of their performance was because his anxiety was so bad that he was about to keel over by the time they finished singing. Also heard regarding this performance: Scott was sick that day and, up until the time they started performing, they weren't sure he'd be able to sing. And rehearsals went badly so all that confidence that you're seeing in the performance was just that - a performance. They were all terrified going into it that they would fall on their faces.

Just catching up with your reactions, I've only known Pentatonix for about 6~7months, so I'm even younger to them than you! Love them, but more a Home Fry than a PTX person!

You should really go listen to the original version of this song. It will help you understand how amazing Pentatonix's arrangement was. Avi did the overtone on their first song. The Katy Perry song.

I have to confess that, as with several other groups like Home Free and VoicePlay and Voctave, the arrangements and sounds of acapella performers are often preferred for me over the original. In fact, I've heard the original after hearing the acapella cover and thought "what was that?!" LOL

Please do their performance on the next seasons finale. It is a wonderful performance of I Need Your Love. Thanks

If I remember right the next one: without you, is kinda bad. The sound system was acting up so they couldn't hear each other and they were already exhausted. The others are pretty good, so is their Christmas performance from the following year. You have 3 songs, plus the win, plus the next year so actually 4 videos if you do them all. Love your reactions, and this was by far my favorite song of the year.

Actually it’s five. There are two performances during the finale the one that had the sound issues that’s not that great. Then there is the one they did with Nick Lachey. Then there’s the Christmas special that happened about a week after season three. Then they did guest performances in season four and in the season five special.

In the world tour they were in the middle of before covid hit, they were doing a "Sing Off Medley" of ET, Video Killed the radio star, and of course, Dog Days. Nine years on (at the time of the concert I went to) , and that moment where its just Mitch singing is still amazing. I would post a video of it, but the sound isn't great.

The journey is almost over. But at least we know that when the Pentatonix journey ends then the Home Free or Voiceplay Sing Off journeys begin. I just thought of something. I think they made the five person minimum for A Capella groups to distinguish them from barbershop quartets.

I think you might be right. I know in interviews that the "trio" said that they tried out or wanted to as a trio and they were told they needed at least 2 more members so they looked for a strong bass and beatboxer to 'finish their sound'. I believe it may have been at the suggestion of a producer, perhaps Ben Bram who was working for The SingOff?

Scott was losing his voice but powered on. That last notes you can hear his voice break.

Which actually sounds like vocal fry and is very effective in contributing to the song! LOL. They were definitely "all in."

Avi can sing the lion sleeps tonight using overtones. Highly talented. You looked like you got hit upside the head with a 2x4. Did your goosebumps have goosebumps?
