KINGPIN was Right (and the Oscar Slap Proves It!)

When I watched Will Smith slap Chris Rock at the Oscars, I realized what we were all thinking--that Kingpin was right. Vincent D'Onofrio gave us one of the MCU's most nuanced villains with Wilson Fisk: AKA The Kingpin. The character is flawed, relatable--and ultimately, he had some noble goals. IN this video, we break down why he was right--and all of the similarities between him and his arch-enemy, Daredevil.

So first, I have to talk about why Wilson Fisk is so different from every other villain in the MCU. Marvel has given us a lot of terrible villains, and a few great ones. And all the great ones had the same thing in common: relatability. We may not agree with their means, but we empathize with their goals.
Of all the villains, Wilson Fisk is the most….human. Vincent D'Onofrio once described him in 3 words: ``Monster and child.” It’s often said that when a child experiences trauma, they never mature past that age-and you can see that with Wilson. He’s shy, nervous. He always avoids eye contact in social situations…heck, I bet he would be a ScreenCrush subscriber. Add on a goatee and a Deadpool tee shirt and we could see the guy at cons.
He’s also very polite. Always saying please, always giving respect to the people in polite society. He’s exceptionally gentle with Vanessa.
Most of the time, when villains are being bad, they seem to really enjoy it. Heck, Palpatine seemed to get off on it. But for Fisk, he’s always holding back the evil inside him. But D’Onofrio still manifests this anger with his physicality, his twitch, the way he rings his hands.
You get the feeling that this is a man who spends every moment trying to be good, but the world just wants him to be bad.
But mostly, we can relate to his end goal. He doesn’t want money, or a criminal empire. He wants to fix his city.
He wants to make New York beautiful and clean. And he’s willing to get dirty to make this dream come true. He is capable of great cruelty. In that way, he’s a lot like Matt Murdock.
Both boys were very smart, were bullied, and frew up in hell’s kitchen. Matt’s family life was also affected by organized crime, and they both lost their dads to violence and were raised by their mothers. And both made a promise to eradicate the evil that corrupted their childhoods.
But mostly, they both hurt people-but Matt Murdock enjoys beating people up. Wilson also loves using violence- but he hates that he loves it.
Mostly, we can identify with Wilson because he does not want to rule. He’s no Marlo, he doesn’t care about the crown. He gathers power because he needs the tools to accomplish his goals.
Just to recap, in Season 1 of Daredevil, Wilson is working with 4 other interests to rebuild Hell’s Kitchen after the battle of New York. Which is kind of silly because Hell’s kitchen is here, and the battle was here, but whatever. He teams up with these gangsters to rebuild.
He insists that they all split the revenue equally, 5 ways. Even in his later appearances, he doesn't consolidate power for his own good, but for the good of the city. Wilson sees himself as a different class of criminal. He has a low opinion of the russians.
And he believes that his vision is what’s best for the city. How is that any different than most leaders or politicians? Some of our greatest leaders held a firm conviction that they were right. Hell, so did Captain America.
In fact, that’s a great comparison. Steve Rogers’ fondest desire was to leave the shield behind, and live a normal life. And Wilson wishes he could leave the city behind. .
But he sees the city as part of him-it’s in his blood. Which is tragic, because he also sees the city as dirty and diseased. So if he can clean up the city, then he can make a part of himself clean.
Wilson was raised in New York in the 1970s-when the city was at its dirtiest. On the inside and outside. Garbage strikes, high crime, summer of sam, Bronx is burning-it was a time when the lower classes felt like they could never catch a break.
So his dad decided that to break through this economic disparity, he would run for office, and join their club. So his dad preached this lesson, that the only reason people are poor is because they’re not man enough to go out and get what they want. So Willie grew up thinking that he had to be a better man than everyone else.

Donofrio's Fisk, especially in season1, was a master class in meaningful villainy. If there is 1 lesson the MCU needs to take from the netflix shows, it is the need for memorable villains. Especially ones you dont kill off or turn into heroes.

Netflix had a better shade of gray. And I loved the fact that I simultaneously wanted to see more of Fisk and hoped to never see him again. Disney's MCU gray seems like it has to always resolve back to the bright colors. I hope that bringing Netflix stories/writers into the fold gives a better perspective for getting deeper villains that don't die off after their one-movie appearance or reduce them to short clips strung together from other movies of "villain doing bad things".

Fisk and Matt both struggled with their identities trying to figure out if they were the monsters that they both claimed to be fighting. Eventually Fisk embraced his darkness accepting the fact that he is the villain of the story, from there he sought to destroy anyone in his way mainly Daredevil.

This would make more sense if Jada wasn’t a covert-aggressive narcissist. That might explain Will’s intentions, but she plays him like a fiddle. Kingpin May love Vanessa, but he doesn’t let her ever degrade him…nor would she. Jada will emasculate Will in a heartbeat, and has many times.

And yet, out of a sense of love, Will Smith sticks by her. It's a story about abuse we as a society are more used to hearing with women as the one who stays by the husband out of "love," which is really just the fear of loss. Often, a fear of loss stems from childhood trauma, neglect, or abandonment, which totally fits here. If Will Smith sees his mother in Jada, then in his mind, leaving the abusive relationship (which abused people believe will hurt their partner, not realizing they only act "hurt" because they thrive on dominance and don't want to lose an easy prey) is as bad as hurting his own mother. That's why breaking free from abuse is extremely hard if it's gone on for years: the victim is staying for what they believe is a noble reason. They defend the person all the more so.

08:55. The great thing about Superman saying "my mom made it for me", is the fact that the storytelling is subtly telling you that his mom was part of who he is and he is crediting her for that. Superman is also placing himself at the level of the kid with enthusiasm about sharing something awesome and not belittling the kid's intelligence in the process. That's GREAT storytelling there. :)

Sometimes, people are shaped by they're parents actions. Be it bad or good, and they can either embody those traits, or they learn from them. It matters not if they're super or ordinary, all of us are shaped or manipulated by our parents' choices and actions. They can be trauma or pleasant, but it all depends how we conduct ourselves today. People like Wilson Fisk, Superman, Will Smith, and many others in the world are shaped and molded by our parents. And whether or not we choose to embrace those parts is up to us. We all have to accept ourselves, the good and the bad.

I'm not sure that's true. Often true in drama but not always. Heroes can save people from natural disasters or accidents. They can also fight against complex negative social forces that are beyond the control of a few villians.

In my opinion the problem of the approach Fisk has taken is that it's not his personal mantra and/or ideals that his realizing but what his father had taught him in his childhood; he's being peer pressured by a dead person or the memory of one. This makes his decisions naïve in nature; always blind to how other think only using them as tools for his trade then forcing his beliefs upon others through intimidation, underhanded tactics, psychological/emotional manipulation and brute force. The saying " the road to hell is pave with good intentions" was showcased throughout his character arc. He holds himself and other to such a high standard that he himself can't live up to and guilts others of his own failures.

I just started watching the whole defenders saga now that it's on Disney + and appreciated how deep Kingpins character is. ( Chronoligocially I'm only halfway through season 1 of Jessica Jones so not aware how Kingpins changes in later Daredevil seasons) So glad he's pulled into the MCU and hope to see more character development

Season 1 of Jessica Jones is amazing! I absolutely loved David’s portrayal of Kilgrave. Have you already watched all Daredevil if you don’t mind me asking? I wasn’t sure if you were going DD s1 & 2, Jessica Jones s1. If you’re watching this way, omg wait until you get to s3 of Daredevil. By far the best season EVER! I watched No Way Home 6 times in theatres including opening night and I’m pretty sure I was the only one who cheered when Matt came on screen. I know this is about Fisk. I think he is by far the BEST VILLAIN IN MARVEL because of everything Ryan said. Kilgrave and Fisk are such interesting villains. Both so controlling in such different ways-one with mind control and the other with intellectual control over literally EVERYONE. I hope you’re enjoying the whole Saga! I had a super hard time watching Iron Fist and stopped watching Luke Cage after episode 6 I believe. But DD and Jessica Jones (specifically s1) are insanely amazing!

As for Will Smith's actions, in my opinion, was born out of fear that he isn't fulfilling his role as a good husband to his wife; that he isn't doing his obligation and commitment to his family and perceived as disloyalty. Hit the nail on the head. It's like that saying goes lately, the nicest, extremely gentle people are sometimes the most evil/sad/manipulative on the inside. Take it as you want it, but its true for so many. Sure, there are genuine good people, but you can't fully trust anyone until you know what makes them tick. How does anyone handle stressful, traumatic experiences? With blind rage? Or bottling up the anger for later? I had plenty of traumatic experiences as a kid. When sh*t his the fan, I used to react with this blind anger. Only because I was never given a chance to explain myself. Was never really a bad kid growing up. It's the fact that extended family I grew up in and friends made bad assumptions. Thinking I wasn't going to listen and no one would hear me out. Got punished severely for something that isn't worth raging over. Still remember a lot of those moments when people close to me would be furious over literally spilled milk. But I learned to go past that. I hold myself accountable and not overreact anymore. I avoid situations where people will try to blame me for something I didn't do. And if someone tries, I tend to not even get involved at all. I got too much sh*t to do 😆

Honestly I think it's the other way around. Wilson Fisk uses the "greater goal" as an excuse for power, he wants everything because he thinks he deserves it, no matter the ways he uses to obtain whatever he wants. He wants to be in control of the city and others, he wants to be respected and feared. Vincent D´Onofrio nailed the Kingpin... it feels like Wilson Fisk is a beast in rage, ready to slaughter anyone and everyone who displeases him, so he tries as best as he can to be polite and civilized, to be a man instead of a monster, because this is what he wishes too. In the end, it's all about himself, even the "good" in the city has to come from him, this is not noble, it's just selfish. About Will Smith, that was all wrong, no matter the excuse. What bother's me... why have the trouble of going all they way there just to slap? What furious man (or person) just slaps and go away? My niece fights harder than that (and she's 5). Was that a message to all the world? Couldn't it be a better message? It's hard to explain, hard to find reasons when the situation was so weird.

I can relate. For when I was a kid, many (adults, parents, teachers, counselors, and the like) had told me that violence is not a solution to a problem. Was also told that prayer helps, but didn't. All I wanted was to have others stop picking on me, and bullying me. Because I was small. Had a father in the military. Made me think. If violence does not solve anything, why are police trained to fight and kill, if needed? Why does every nation in power have a military trained to fight also? So, I eventually fought back. And for the first time, I got results. Hitting a bully got many of them to back off, and leave me alone. Something that no parent, teacher, or counselor was able or even willing to do for me. Was not until I used violence to solve my issue, did I manage to put a dent in the numbers of those that would treat me badly. I also learned another powerful lesson at that time. Adults want to rule over you. Is hard to control the unruly. And violent people tend to be unruly. So, are told not to take matters into their own hand to solve an issue, but to come to them to solve them for you. By this, they hope to control you, wile also at the same time, not really provide the help they promise. What they really want, is for you to be good, and not complain and give then any issues. Turns out, in the end, Kingpin is indeed right. You have to do what you are told not to do, and take matters into your own hands to solve an issue yourself, even if it means using violence, if you want to see an issue solved. For no one else is going to do it for you. Not when it really matters. And just like Kingpin, the system will punish you for stepping out of place. Just as I got in trouble a lot in school for getting into fights, even when I didn't start them. For to those in the system, you are not in their control. But, being in their control is not always a benefit to an individual either. Seems to fulfill a saying. "You're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't." And you got to ask yourself at times, what do you want to put up with, more. Getting bullied, for being a good person and not making waves? Or getting a time out for being a bad unruly person, according to the system? For at times, it's going to be, one or the other. When the shit hits the fan, and the shit lands on you, is that really a hard question to answer? O.o

Fisk is civil, not polite. He doesn't go out of his way to belittle someone, that he feels is something below himself. He also understands people and the roles they play (his greatest asset). Fisk loves honesty, integrity and honorable people, but he won't let any of that stand in his way.

Are you guys looking over my shoulder....? I just finished the first season of Daredevil (for the first time) so this video is perfect timing! I was utterly mesmerized by Fisks journey. All the Daredevil stuff and the lawyer office stuff just got in the way of what I really wanted to see. What a character and what a performance.

Gotta say I think you missed the mark on this one Ryan. Fisk doesn’t care about making the city better for every day people. He cares about making it better for him. He convinces himself that his motives are pure to satiate that hurt child within himself, however it couldn’t be further from the truth. He cares about power and control and the money he makes to maintain that power and control. If he were a good man working for the good of the people he wouldn’t be running drugs through Madam Gao and The Hand, a criminal empire working towards world control. Sure, Matt Murdock is a fighter and he beats up bad guys and puts them in jail and they may end up on the street again - but that’s because he puts his faith in the justice system as a lawyer. You nonchalantly mention that as if Matt is wrong for doing things with a higher moral compass. He has a strict code and he will not take a life. He puts people behind bars and let’s the system do the rest. It doesn’t always work, but he is a better man than Fisk with a greater concern for the citizens of his city. He puts his life on the line every night to protect, not take advantage of. There’s a huge difference.

I agree with you, for all his talk about improving the city, Kingpin doesn't seem to care who's there to witness that or the consequences in achieving it for the lower classes. We can see it very clearly when he killed Mrs. Cardenas and hinted at when it was not specified how much he paid the other residents or if they even had a better life after that. The battle for New York was a lot bigger than you give it credit for. They were flying aliens crashing into buildings. That wasn't contained in a one or two block radius, so its perfectly reasonable to believe hells kitchen was damaged too. Also, lastly, the netflix series aren't canon to the MCU. They are picking and choosing what is canon, so we have to actually wait and see what is canon before going ahead and assuming everything in the netflix shows are completely canonical. iirc, feige himself has said that some things are going to be canon and some aren't. If it wasn't feige it was someone else at marvel.

I've never subscribed to Netflix or watched their version of Daredevil and so I'm completely ignorant of their lore. But I have to say, that this video has really opened my eyes to how deep the show is and how very Nocenti the writing is (I'm showing my age now). This analysis has been very thought provoking and illuminating on a character that I have found to be far more complex than the standard villain the comic book genre.
