As strange as it may seem, I hope Toyota makes an MR2 that uses the Prius or Camry's THS with eAWD. I am a massive fan of Toyota's hybrids so maybe I'm biased, but I think it has potential for a sports car, especially with the engine on the rear axle. Regardless of how they do it, it'll be great to have it back.

Some journalists in Japan have been able to drive the new 2.0L Turbo engine in the Hilux with 300hp which was mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. There is also 400hp version being tested in a Lexus IS. This is big great news for us. A 400hp Celica AWD and a RWD MR2. Both available with a 6-speed

Those days are over. Owning a new car is a luxury now, as no one can afford them anymore. So manufacturers have leaned into this and targeted the upperclass/luxury market. Affordable cars are a dead market. That’s why the 1990s work horse hooptys are back on the road lol. People making due with what they got.

The idea of a bulletproof Toyota Turbo 4cyl with AWD is tempting to wait for but ONLY if both the Celica and the MR2 are not stupid expensive right out of the gate! Has Toyota not learned from dealer gouging recently that offering a good car at a reasonable price will sell more cars than creating a smaller number of cars at an expensive price/plus dealer markups. I can do without a lot of the halo car treatment especially on the MR2 just so that it can be accessible to the masses…not just a handful of wealthy people.🙄💰💰💰

I’m excited about both these cars. I don’t think the MR2 will be AWD, unless it’s a hybrid with an electric motor at the front. Transverse engines have the transaxle to the side and/or behind the engine, so in a AWD transverse mid engine configuration, the front driveshaft would have to go through the engine block. They might get by with running it through the oil pan, but I doubt there’s clearance for it. To my knowledge, no company has ever built a non-hybrid AWD mid-engine car with a transverse engine. As far as the Celica goes, it sounds awesome. I hope Toyota gives it some retro styling cues with the four headlight setup and hood scoop.
@TMWSTW-hy5ph4 ай бұрын
I know they were messing around with AWD with the 222D, mind you though that was for group B. You could also have the transmission in front of the engine to allow for "MR AWD" especially transverse. I won't call it RR as that implies a longitudinal setup for a sport car. EDIT: They could also dry-sump the motor to get rid of the oil pan under the engine entirely. EDIT2: Going off of the previous edit, they could put in the GR Yaris/Corolla drivetrain to make it AWD so long as they put in a reversed transaxle.

I'm sure the MR2 will start in the low $50K's ... Adjusted for inflation - early "cheap" mid-engine cars started under $30K (x1/9 and Fiero). The Porsche 914 started at $34K. Sure - huge technical differences between then and now ... I really wish someone would break the mold and offer a fun, toss-able mid-engine car. I would love to see something like a production version of a Pontiac Fiero with a Chevy Bolt powertrain. Fun, reliable, cheap to run (add some fake Hyundai Ioniq N noises and regenerative braking tricks) somewhere in the mid-$30K's before Federal incentives and I might be persuaded :)

I prefer some vibration for more of a raw power feel. That sense of grabbing the nest gear is nice for the same reason, even if it comes at the expense of a few 1/10ths of acceleration time.

400hp out of a 2.0L 4 cylinder is just bananas. Its amazing to see how far we've come. Im curious to see how it performs when its out of the revs. My Caddy CTS has a tuned 2.0L turbo and its rather laggy in the low revs at only 270-280hp. Also i highly doubt the new base model MR2 is 80K plus. They will make more affordable trim levels.

Please note the exchange rates. 10 Million Yen is closer to US$62,500, and not "just under $100K". That's a big difference, but it would still be higher than the Supra, which doesn't make sense. If the Celica GT-FOUR successor is actually offered at 6.5 Million Yen, then it could be the bargain of the bunch at $40,625
