I go out of my way to talk to every npc, and when you go to islands you’ve connected and talk to the people there, they all talk about how thankful they are that the islands are reconnected and how they can see their friends and family again, or how they’re glad they can go to other islands again. It’s a relatively small thing, but it’s super fulfilling and gives me a real good feeling 😊

I feel like Mario and Luigi Brothership is a good "first" for a new company handling the series, I think they played it safe to make sure they "Got It" and I feel like they do, and then with the next game they can go all out. I don't feel like they really do get it, though. Like, if you have two Nintendo die-hards sitting here saying 'this game isn't funny AT ALL' when Superstar Saga came out of the gate 20 years ago, as a first entry, and had great writing for the humor like...there's something wrong there. Mario RPGs specifically live and die on their writing so it's a huge flub to get that so wrong.

I personally love Brothership so far. The art style, the music, and even the characters are so memorable for me! So expressive! I really like the gameplay loop too, though I can see why some might not. The first visit to an island is usually for linking them, then while you’re setting course you can go back and find hidden blocks and other collectibles for a really neat mechanic down the line. The islands arent too big to where going back feels like a slog either, so it works out imo!
@twindragons459017 күн бұрын
I’ve seen people complain about tutorials, but they’re optional boxes that can be clicked out of. God forbid a game explain its mechanics. They should obviously follow Xenoblade 2s example! Jk! I don’t know, at its core it’s a Mario and Luigi game. They’ve been (for the most part) love it or hate it titles. Bowsers inside story being the only one that doesn’t seem to have a lot of “hate” attached to it so to speak.

I think that the dialogue in between islands serves as a nice break and sort of mental buffer between the islands so that you feel ready to go to the next one. Some people might say it’s long and boring, but with the low attention spans that many of us have these days, the regular gameplay could start to feel tedious without it. The dialogue gives you a nice description of the purpose of going to the next island which further incentivizes you to play the game.

It honestly kind of feels like they went and made Luigi into a Paper Mario partner. Yeah the Palworld lawsuit is almost certainly meant to force Pocket Pair to settle (I assume legal fees would amount to way more than the settlement) simply to make an example. I’ve seen some theories that it may be a reactionary measure after they partnered with Sony, which would also make sense. My main qualm is that the dates the patents were filed are well after Palworld came out… and the idea of more sinister companies being able to patent something after the fact and sue for it is not the best precedent to set.
@Greekanese3116 күн бұрын
The patent date thing isn't true. If you look at the dates the patents were filed, it was several years before Palworld's release (in preparation for Legends Arceus's release). What people were reporting as "the patents being filed in 2024" were people reporting a "Date of Last Update" as the "Date of Filing"; at best a failure to vet in order to try to have a scoop, but at worst a malicious attempt to spread misinformation.
@ShallBePurified16 күн бұрын
@@Greekanese31The original patent was created after the reveal of Palworld, if I am not mistaken. Filing a patent as a reaction to a game reveal to eventually use it to sue them is still scummy. Now, it could be for Legends Arceus and it's just a coincidence, but suing over a game mechanics patent is also scummy in itself. So no matter how you slice it, not doing a copyright lawsuit and instead doing a patent lawsuit is not a good look.

Definitely. It's common Video Game Sense 101. If theres a cutscene where the important character is talking to an NPC, you go and talk to that NPC. Kit and Krysta's job is to essentially play A LOT of games during the year to talk about them on this channel so they can't be spending too much time on a single video game doing trivial task but at the same time.. The NPC was literally right there so it's like they weren't even trying. Krysta even called it bad game design. I call it, people just need to talk to NPCs more lol.

About King K. Rool and the Kremlings at Universal, the park was planned years before he returned in SSBU. Instead, the park was planned when Returns and Tropical Freeze were newer-hence the park pulling heavily from those two games. Kit (and Krysta), I'm rather surprised by you brought up getting Phil Spencer's permission to feature King K. Rool at the park because Nintendo clearly owns the Kremlings full-stop. It's a flat-out misconception that Microsoft has anything with them. The Kremlings appeared in many games post-Rare buyout (even Mario Super Sluggers), and when King K. Rool was added to SSBU, there was zero Microsoft/Rare copyright (just like the other games featuring the Kremlings post-buyout). I figured two Nintendo employees would know that information (which I don't mean in a curt/rude way). Still, I suppose Nintendo hasn't outright used the Kremlings too much aside from brief appearances, so I understand the confusion around Nintendo's reluctance to use them for the past decade or so.

No Spoilers. I'm 35 hours into Brothership. What I can say is that I thought the game had an incredibly slow start. I consider the first 10 hours an extended tutorial prologue. Then the game picks up with its story plus fighting stronger enemies which made the combat way more fun. But then I got to an island in the third sea, not a spoiler by the way, the game tells you from the start that there are five seas. The pace just plummets. I won't say the name of the island but it was such a drag to play. Other than that, I'm having a good time with the game. I understand the general message that the story is trying to say with its deeper meaning that connecting with people is overall good for one's health and the world. Sounds to me this game's development started exactly when covid and quarantine became a first started happening.

@oddishu17 күн бұрын
@ Yeah. I might be exaggerating on the time just a tiny bit but in this game, the first island you go to is THE tutorial. That island takes about an hour-ish to finish. Then the first sea takes about 7-10 hours depending on how you play, exploring, going back and talking to NPC since their dialogue changes. So I would really define the first hour as the tutorial and then the first 10 hours as a whole as the prologue because the game opens up when you get to second sea.
@DarkMage_scrab17 күн бұрын
(if you have not played this game I would not advise you to read my response. I don't want my opinions to influence those who are thinking of buying this game) yeah, i very much agree that the length of the first sea was really long, and could've been trimmed down by a lot. and it sucks because that could very much turn off people from continuing to play the rest of the game. I feel like after Rumbla, they could've approached the next two islands a bit differently, maybe just having you go to one of them to then have to go back to Rumbla. also, the combat options remain pretty limited for that 7-10 hour run, which does not leave a great first impression of what it has to offer. having to wait a lot of hours of the game's run time to get to the main appeal of the battle system was not a good thing imo, especially if you're a newcomer to the series. second sea is where it gradually picks up, but then the third sea's story just wasn't paced well at all (the combat hard carried this section of the game imo), which sucks because the next sea picks up so much it's crazy. I am enjoying this game a lot, though, and I hope it does well enough to justify another entry in the series.

Collecting the Challenge badges helps augment gameplay and make it more difficult in a good way. To collect the last badge, not a spoiler you see this in the first portion of the game, to collect the last badge, you must defeat 300 enemies without gear or gloves. It makes the game more challenging and the consumption of mushrooms and syrup jars is important. The graphical style is awesome, the gameplay is fun. The story is boiler-plate child schlock (so far, about 9 hours in). Denizens of Mushroom Kingdom look great, the characters of Concordia are pretty bland. Background and especially the water is very pretty. Music is awesome. Twistee Island theme is fantastic. 7.5/10. 5 is way to harsh. The over tutorializing is for kids, the prime audience for this game.

Honestly completing the Challenges was really fun and kept me engaged even when the game felt slow in the beginning. The defeat 300 enemies with no gear challenge is actually what I started doing immediately when I first saw it. I think battle plugs are a great idea, I just think they should've given us a place/store to recharge them instead of just gear that speeds it up. Most of the characters seem bland (aside from the main ones), but at least it's a step towards more unique ones. The music I'm a little mixed on, but I think I overall like it. The overworld and boss themes are great, the normal battle theme feels lacking compared to previous versions, but it's still fine (apparently the new composer had never composed for an RPG before, so I'd say they did a very good job on their first attempt). Also, the tutorials I feel like never were "hand-holdy" since they always pop up in small text boxes that you can get through in a second or two. Overall, very good first attempt from the new company, I just think they need to improve in a few areas (Luigi's controls, writing, pacing, and some music). I'd probably give it a 7.5/10 as well (sorry for writing a lot btw)

I do think people have been a bit too harsh on the game. But I disagree with your last bit about the tutorials, because that’s a terrible excuse. Nintendo’s made plenty of other games in recent years where they’ve managed to consolidate their tutorials and NOT treat you like an imbecile child. Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, hell even the Thousand-Year Door remake didn’t go this far with the tutorials. They tell you how to play the game and explain everything they need to explain, but they also know when to shut up and give the player control again. This game has the habit of constantly breaking the flow of the gameplay to OVER-explain basic game mechanics. And it’s not just the tutorials. There are way too many needless cutscenes that serve no purpose. Can’t tell you how many times I said “what the hell was the point of this..? That bit could’ve definitely been cut.” Almost like they’re artificially padding out the game’s length. Furthermore, this was a problem that prior Mario & Luigi games had (especially on 3DS), which many complained about, and this game unfortunately learned nothing from the past.
@svee75975 күн бұрын
@@PianistTanooki I wasn’t making an excuse. The over tutorializing is a fair criticism. It just feels like this game aims for a young audience (even by Nintendo standards). The game seems to be going after a younger audience than Thousand year door (my personal favorite paper Mario.) Going into this game with that mindset made me not dislike it as much. Makes you think about Miyamoto's stance on story. Maybe he was a bit spoiled with good writers and needs to give the younger writers some TLC.

Villian in particular is probably the most evident aspect of the weak writing. His running gag of misremembering names is pretty lame and he doesn't feel threatening in large part because they keep trying to push this joke. Really a step down from the Rogue's Gallery specific for the M&L series.

The best part of the game is the story, and you can't appreciate the story until seeing the ending. So beat the game to get the most out of it!
@PianistTanooki6 күн бұрын
Yeah but that’s the problem. Beating the game means you’re investing a good 35-40 hours of your time. I agree, it DOES get a lot better, but it shouldn’t take 10-15 hours of gameplay to get fun; it should be fun from the start.

Palworld… I wish pocket pair were the plucky indie dev they claim they were, but they raked in literally 100’s of millions by skirting just inside the copyright lines to be Pokemon-adjacent yet not get sued on copyright. The ceo has famously said they paid lawyers beforehand to make sure the designs weren’t crossing the legal line. But of course they very much go against the spirit of artistic integrity, and now ironically the big bear is trying to get them on other technicalities. Live by the sword, Die by the sword.

I didn't trust the IGN review because I didn't believe they're credible... but after the first hour, I can see a possible scenario where this game is a 5/10 for me. I really hope the rest of the game picks up!

I agree, the game's only funny moments are Luigi being Luigi. It's nice that didn't change but the writig is very boring.
@Nate9-913 күн бұрын
It is nearly flawless, imo. I got used to hi Luigi is handled, although I understand why some don’t like his changes. Toggling between the Bro abilities in the over world with the right stick is a great difference from the other games in the series. The cutscenes work well for me. Most of the “handholding” is short or can be skipped. The pacing doesn’t bother me. I might be a bit more than half way through, idk for sure.. easy 9/10 I think. If not higher.

I wish Nintendo created a DK RPG game for Nintendo. I think it’s about time for them to

Take2 doesn't need a diversified portfolio because they have been printing money with GTA Online for more than a decade, and that is very unlikely to stop anytime soon.

If you both didn't get to work at Nintendo Kit would be working for Sega and there would be a mystery every week of Sonic Statues/merch being vandalized Krysta would have become that lawyer, and have a sitcom based on her exploits... Krysta McBeal

We need a donkey Kong 64 but for the next console. Donkey Kong (whatever it’s called) and they need to stop neglecting old characters for new characters. Sure they can have new characters but when Nintendo makes games they will remove familiar characters and add more without having BOTH included.

16:20 I haven’t played it yet but I don’t really care for IGN reviews. I look for reviews from people who have a similar taste of games as I do. Harveststella reviewed horribly… but I low key really liked it. 😅

Logan is such a big Nintendo fan so when he gave brothership a 5 I took it off my list after he explains why. It does sound like my niece might like this one tho so I might get it for her for Xmas.
@radiorah76817 күн бұрын
Mario RPG’s haven’t been quality since the Gamecube and NDS era. I have my feelings about IGN but Logan's review is pretty spot on. I suggest getting her Super Mario RPG or Paper Mario: TTYD remake instead.

I wasn’t big on dream team, and from everything I’ve seen, this game has every flaw of that game but doubled to the extreme of them
@FaesJournal17 күн бұрын
basically, dream team at least had a strong thematic hook to it imo to help pull you through some of the poorer beginning parts but brothership feels relatively safe and even watered down in certain areas to the point that I can't see it being easy to power through the slowness

Hands down Nintendo would not be as succeessful with the Switch without Kit, he was responsible for Nintendo Direct working out, I think those played a huge role in the Switch hype, without the direct hyppe, the Switch would probably be half as popular.

I don't think I'd go that far, but the first 10-15 hours of it ARE pretty mid. Though I'll just tell you that if you're already that far, it doesn't take much longer for the game to pick up. It's the third act of the game where things get considerably more interesting. That being said, it shouldn't take 10-15 hours for a game to become interesting. It should be interesting from the start.

I'm halfway through Brothership and the IGN review is accurate and honest. This game is among the worst in the series. It doesn't hold a candle to The Thousand Year Door and Mario RPG remakes.
@zachariah25117 күн бұрын
I finished the game and it just kept dragging on. The bros attacks are drip fed and just are not fun to do after the 10th time. The level design was just too simple. Previous games had interesting level design where mario and luigi would split up or do something interesting. The plot was simple, but it is just a mario game, however the side characters were too boring to be given the attention they did get. 5/10 probably not buying the next mario and luigi

Nintendo loves to infantilize their audience despite the main demographic of Switch being 18-34 (or 20-36?). Their games end up feeling somewhat bland and safe because of it.

My headcanon for the alternate universe where kit and krysta never worked for nintendo: Kit works at namco until he grows spiteful of his employer and successfully launders money from the company. When Namco finds out and sues him, he hires Krysta as a lawyer and countersues successfully. Krysta is too depressed from being a lawyer and nobody will hire Kit, so they use the winnings from the court case to start a podcast about videogames with a legal spin on the Krysta and Kit gaming and legal news podcast as their full time job.
