If you say you arent an artist even one more time, I will fly to aussie land and smack you right upside your head. I watch very few channels on creators. I greatly enjoy yours.

don't be absurd dude, your an incredible artist, a pro even, don't let imposter syndrome pull you down. those things come naturally to you, so it doesn't feel special but it is. your vision is unique and incredible, EVERYTHING is created from other ideas, no idea is truly new and unique. the amount of people on the planet with a high level of creativity is actually remarkably low, you just surround yourself with incredible artists so its hard to see how small the community is compared to the global demand for such products. never doubt yourself.

I’m a musician and even though neither of us are traditional (visual) artists, I think it’s fair to use the title artist proudly! The art you make - don’t short change yourself, it is art - and the videos you create about your art are plenty enough art for you to count as an artist. Don’t even worry about having a message you want to send either, that will just come naturally from your work!

"Are you an artist" is an interesting question, I think often the big artists who people know and draw inspiration from getting their 'message' from their audience rather than it always being what they put out there. A big part of Art is to provoke feelings from the viewer and when something is as broad as that... I don't think it matters if you know "What it means to be an artist." It means you make art. AND YOU! Make amazing, beautiful pieces for us all to see and admire. If you want a message from me? 'Ugly is Magnificent.' Is what I get from Miscast content. Be it your funky mandrakes... the dragon in the box... arcane ugly content. You consistently make Gribbly Beautiful! You may not know if you're an artist, but you are to me. And I'm sure many more would agree.

You know what I see when I look at Trent's work? I see an inspired creator who does what he loves and loves what he does. I see ideas and combinations that could only come from him. I see the journeys and stories of very little item on his army. Most importantly however, I see creations, stories and ideas captured in a way that would stand the test of time. In 70 years when someone finds a weird looking floating dolphin model on a shelf, they're gonna wonder who came up with it and how not "hey that's not art it's just a dolphin toy mashed together"

Making stuff within the confines of "for D&D or warhammer can be good for people because constraint and limitation breeds creativity. It can be hard to create something if there are no boundaries. Sometimes the challenge of being told "create something but it must remain ________" or "create something with ______ aesthetic" can be like a puzzle to solve. That being said, always take time to do whatever you want when the inspiration strikes. Also, you are one of my favorite artists ever. I bought your Night Sky poster and have been following since the beginning man. Keep it up.

Art is an amazingly broad term and artist is similar. There is an entire genre of art called readymades, pieces of art that are just a piece, with minor modifications. A signed toilet, a bulk order of lollies. An entire genre of Poetry is dedicated towards the found word. Taking words and turning them into something else. Appropriation of other works to create something new and transformative is art. Its a very interesting and fantastic way to do art. Working with materials, changing them, painting them, working with what you have, it's all art and as it's creator, you are an artist.

I love how you approach your craft, and that you are constantly thinking and changing. I feel like I've been in stasis since I started posting on socials, like I can't post anything that doesn't fit in the tiny box of things that got noticed. I draw, but I also sculpt, mini paint, terrain build and create random things. I feel like I have trouble sharing anything but my drawings because those are the most digestible to the public, they got the most 'likes' Its a suffocating way to create as an artist of many mediums. I appreciate you sharing your stream of conscience, it makes me feel bolder, like I should just create and share because its what I like doing and for no other reason. Seriously has been a struggle for me this past year, thanks for your art!

Even if you have't found your voice yet seeing you working with the materials tells the viewers a few things. It tells us that one doesn't need "art supplies" in order to make something. It tells us that if we want to try kitbash or drawing that we should just go for it, there are no wrong styles or ideas just ideas waiting to be put into reality. And of course hearing you explain your thought process and ideas it tells us that, again, just go for it even if the results aren't going to be what we expected. Sometime that can be a good thing and spark the imagination even more. Please don't think that you need to find your voice just let it come to you, you're doing great! I've said this before but i'll say it again, thank you for giving me the push to make my own tabletop rpg, your first video on Arcane Ugly was the push i needed for that and i've learned quite a bit since then, even if i never get to play it i still have fun trying to figure out the balance and mechanics of it. It's a nice way to spend an afternoon if the mindset is there.

Others have touched on this already but I thought I would let you know what "message" I get from your videos. You do what you want to or feel inspired to, you don't seem to force yourself to do things for anybody other than yourself, you have fun with it. And in the process of all that, you learn new skills and you grow as an artist and a person. I actually find you to be one of the biggest inspirations to this side of my life. I always find myself thinking about the time value of things that I'm doing (a side effect of having jobs that required constant attention to how much time things take), but your videos remind me that I don't always need to be productive in a traditional sense, my time doesn't have to have value to anybody else as long as I get something from it. Anyway, this ended up being longer than I intended and maybe what I am alone in this take away but all of it is really just to say I appreciate the videos and keep up the good work, just keep doing the things you enjoy and I'll probably keep watching forever, even if you decide to take up ballet instead or something.

Just a note on the whole "am I an artist" thing, you enjoy art and create pieces that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye whilst do it as a profession/hobby. By definition you're an artist. All this speech of having to have a meaning or goal often for other artists helps to direct their art/help them in the creation process and isn't how everyone operates. You've already found a way that works for you, all you gotta do is iterate and improve as an artist, not worry about your designation as one.

Not that one necessarily needs something to convey in order to be an artist but: While it can be argued that you indeed have a message you convey, I personally think that you certainly convey a feeling and/or attitude with your stuff. The reason I follow you as an artist is because of the feeling I get whenever I see something you made (be it videos, bashes or arcane ugly). You as an artist/person and the creations you do have something that lets people feel something.

As an artist taking things made by other people and creating new things out of them is how we make things that progress creativity. Musicians remixing songs and genres. Painters transcribing the works of older paintings, digital artists collaging photos to create fantasy environments. You could build a house out of lego bricks and build something ok or you could use actual bricks and with the time you save be able to invest the house with more of your creativity.

When you think about it, all creative work is taking inspiration from things out in the world, and using them as a language to convey our own thoughts and feelings. There's no truly "original" work. Only varying levels of kit-bash. We don't always know what we're conveying. But it does say something. I think one of the functions of creating art is to act as a mirror we can hang up to see ourselves.

just to affirm the idea of using and reinterpreting other people's ideas in the form of kitbashing, that sort of thing is very common in art, fine art is movement and change and building upon the work of the past, music too, changing and pushing out and finding things to explore in music, storytelling is the one I'm most familiar with, there are plenty of retellings of old stories that change and adapt them, and it doesn't make them less unique

3:48 I think kitbashing is legit art. You have an original idea and you’re using materials to make it, sometimes those materials have components that fit your vision, other times you have to make it kinda out of scratch (clay, metal wires, wooden dowels, etc.). But your idea is unique and that’s what matters. Even in cases where the idea isn’t totally original, like if your making a “hulked out bat-man” or your take on what spider-mans classic costume would should look like, it’s still got your unique style to it, like a remix. So in summary don’t be too hard on yourself Miscast and don’t doubt yourself. (Edit) also everyone is inspired by something, and rarely (if ever) is there a truly genuinely original idea. So taking bits and pieces of different ideas to make something “New”, that’s totally normal. Perfect example The Incredible Hulk was inspired by Frankenstein, and Doctor Jykle and Mister Hyde, two ideas that combined to make a new character.

Even in such a small artistic venture like following your steps in creating a ruined terrain (and using your great templates) I found a breath of creative freedom and real joy in my uncontrolled "happy accidents". For me your art is skillful and well thought out but most of all it's fun!

your mandrake botany kit idea would be cool with a UV lamp, getting avatar/skyrims blackreach vibes of photoluminescent plants if you used fluorescent paints on something, could make for something in an underground setting

You’re like currently one of my favourite artist right now. If that helps with justifying it.

i make video games and the concept of making a game out of other “parts” is a huuuuge part of game development. after all, lots of ideas have been tried. its all about finding those unique combinations, having them interact in interesting ways, bringing together the things you enjoy into one shape that is unique to you, and wearing those influences like a badge of honor. i think where a lot of games fail is that they dont have an identity, its more just recycled content that eventually becomes a formula. i think where your work shines is that theres a huge sense of identity, i could never mistake your work for someone elses and that not only makes you an artist, but a successful one

I see a lot of people here trying to find your justification for being an artist but I have always felt like artists are the only persons who can confidently answer the question "Why did you do/make it?" with "I donno, but it's cool, isn't it?" and the only honest answer to that one is "Yes".

My take: An artist is a person who makes art because they want to make art. I feel like when we get hung up on the message of art, we miss the mark. Art doesn't need a message. It simply needs to exist. So just keep making stuff and have yourself a lovely time doing it.

In my opinion, as an artist, your art has your own voice. You don't need a reason to make something or to put something together. That's for other people to figure out. You only need a voice when you feel it's needed. If you're trying to say something specific with your art, you will. Otherwise it's just a part of you that you can share with others. In terms of kit bashing and your work, it's absolutely yours. Whether you're using a head from a National Geographic model and gluing it to a 40K body with a Fisher Price tail or something of a zillion bits to make a giant shoggoth monster; it's yours. It's your idea, your work, your vision. It's much like you making the mandrakes. A mandrake is some story made up by someone else but you're making your own, and you know it's yours because it's your vision. The parts become the sum of the whole and you're the last piece.
