This is what I like about these KitchenAid mixers. Parts are generally easy to acquire and repairs are often quite simple to make once you see the instructions (particularly videos like this). Being able to make these kind of repairs at home save money as well as having to ship the mixer back to KitchenAid to be repaired. Thanks for a great video That Dad Mike.

Thanks for posting this. I had never really thought about my bowl until it stopped fitting in to the turn plate. After looking at your video, I realized that the plastic ring had come off my bowl and was seated in the well above the plate. So obvious but until I viewed your video with the plastic attachment missing from the top of the plate, I didn’t see the obvious. Got pliers and unscrewed the plastic ring from the plate and screwed it back on to the bowls . I had actually thought of buying a newer mixer!

Isn't the screw in the hinge for adjusting the height of the beater. If the head is moving up and down while mixing the beater is rubbing the bottom of the bowl, this is why people break the glass bowl because it's thicker than the stainless steel bowl and has to be adjusted.
@ThatDadMike3 жыл бұрын
In these models, it is to prevent the head of the mixer from bouncing by raising its stop point slightly. When adjusted correctly, it works in tandem with the lock on the side of the machine to prevent bouncing.

Oh my. I have been searching on the kitchen aid sight to fix this. Since I make bread of course I knead in my mixer. The bowl always gets stuck. Nit an easy fix for me have to wait for my son to come down and unlock. The sight said to do the “ dime test” Well that meant I had to adjust the height. Etc. did not work for the sticking. They suggested buying a new bowl. But I am old and so been around a while 😆. I thought well that’s an expensive purchase if not the trick. I thought about the plate and was going to see if and here you are suggesting that. Thank you so much. This will be my first purchase to try and fix this. By the way my bowl has done this from day one. My machine is only 2 years old. Think kitchen aid should have replaced it long ago. But of course they didn’t. Thank you. I will definitely invest in the plate.
@ThatDadMike27 күн бұрын
Let me know how it goes! The way the bowl is designed, it uses friction to hold it in place. I definitely think they should change that design a bit because inevitably it's going to get stuck like yours and mine did do to wear.
@mariannatrapani585927 күн бұрын
@ I just ordered the plate. I hope it works. I just started making my own bread. Confession I am 83. And thought well I don’t have the strength to unlock. Happy to say my strong son had a tough time unlocking it also. 😆. It has been getting harder to unlock. So I think this might work. I will definitely let you know. Thank you. --I have used so much pressure to unlock it hit me in the chest twice. So not going to try and unlock again.

Good morning Mike. Today is Friday December 20th. Making bread for the Christmas holiday. I have written before and did take your advice and changed the plate. Did not work. My bowl still locks. Did the dime test adjusted the head etc. I am on call for a call back from kitchen aid. Not liking their customer service. Keep switching me to another person. Anyway. I am considering purchasing another bowl. But truthfully they are so expensive. This is the second year for my Mixer. So it’s not old. And it has done this from the beginning. Oh sorry if it sounds like I’m complaining to you. But you did want an update. Have to say I had a farberware mixer and in my opinion it was much better than this mixer. Unfortunately my daughter lost it in the move. Ok thank you Mike for all your help. I will update on what kitchen aid tells me. Thank you again.

Just came across this very helpful video that saved me from tossing my 20 year old Classic model. Thank you so much for helping me fix the few annoying things (quite a severe wobble and holding the hinge pin in place constantly, haha) that my mixer was doing the past couple of years. I do have a Bosch that I use for bread and pizza dough because I can do bigger batches in it. But I love this little mixer for a simple cake or some cookies or a batch of icing. I just told my husband last week that I thought I needed a new one and I was so sad about it because it was purchased when we had our first child and there a so many memories attached to it. So thanks! Off to order a new plate for the bottom and some new bushings so when those need to be replaced, I'll be ready:)

Thanks, I just went through the same process, and got it relatively tight. However on advice from an old retired repair guy ,he said some that were the same age as ours , had some tolerance issues at hinge .. his fix, and has never been an issue since, was to use a set of feeler gauges to measure that end play in hinge, and he gave me several shim washers that required drilling out to match the pin diameter after selecting correct thickness and insert them .. result though a bit fiddly to do, is a perfect fit .. and never had to adjust it in 2 yrs, despite heavy Covid baking sessions .. Another issue when we first got it , during an Xmas baking marathon, the mixer at the front threw out the grease, or most of it .. That was fixed by my now retired repair guy ..he suspected that it had been over stuffed with grease .. or that the heat built up to a point it became thinner and leaked out .. High heat /pressure grease for industrial machines never been a problem..

Thank you! I've been having problems with the pin slipping out from either side. I tightened that screw before over the past few years,but it didn't take long to loosen again. I've had bouncing and adjusted the screw. Sometimes the paddle was too low it seems. The biggest thing for me in which I'm excited about is the replacement motor brushes! I never knew about them. My mixer has been having a hard time going past number 6. It staggers and sounds strained. I am hoping it's the fix, because I have lots more baking to do. My mixer is 22 years old. I've never replaced any parts for it.
@ThatDadMikeАй бұрын
I am right there with you, mine is over 20 years old now and had the same issue. The brush change fixed it, hopefully it does the same with yours! When you take out the old brushes, make sure and pay attention to the orientation of the side that has the 45 degree angle or it won't make contact with the motor and won't turn on (if you look in where the brushes are you can see a tab inside). Also don't over tighten the screws that cover the brushes, just slightly tight is all that is needed. Good luck!

Thank you for this! I've been having a few issues with my KitchenAid and was about ready to throw it out. Just curious though, the way you fixed the tilt head issue isn't that how to raise or lower your mixers so it mixes properly? I saw someone post about a dime test and thought that's how they adjusted it. Anyway, thanks again. Glad I found you!
@ThatDadMike10 ай бұрын
I am glad the video helped! The adjustment screw does raise and lower the head slightly. Ideally you are able to strike a balance between making the locking mechanism just tight enough to prevent the bouncing while raising the head to make sure it mixes properly.

Thank you! Finally a useful video. What I didn't get is, when do you replace the motor brushes? My mixer is overheating, haven't even used it that much. Now I started baking rolls and I am wondering if 6 c of flour is too much for this mixer to handle. The bowl size is a KSM 150.
@ThatDadMike16 күн бұрын
Thank you! It is entirely possible that it is too much. Mine definitely gets warm mixing 4 cups of flour and 2 cups of water when making pizza dough if I run it for several minutes. I would recommend trying with 4 cups and see if that helps. If it does not it could be something else such as lack of grease inside the casing.

Ok I’ve tried the pin tighten and I’ve don’t the tilt head screw adjustment and it still wobbles. I had to replace the tilt head screw and can’t find an actual match for it ANYWHERE. The flathead slot was stripped and I had to unscrew it with pliers and sheer will. 1) where do I find a replacement? Cause online has failed me and so have all the hardware stores. 2) is there another reason for the bouncy mixer head other than dime test or pin? Your video is clear, and very helpful for the issues you mentioned. Much better than a lot of others. Thank you for all of this.
@ThatDadMike2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment! The bounce is most often caused as a result of the lock and the motor head having a gap - the screw is what raises the motor slightly to close that gap. Is the screw number 31 on the diagram listed here? (double check your model). If so you could also call this company to confirm it is the right one: www.partswarehouse.com/KitchenAid-4-1-2-Quart-Classic-Stand-Mixer-Classic-With-Ti-s/575811.htm

@ThatDadMike2 жыл бұрын
No problem at all, happy to help! Decreased power or speed, or no power at all are a sign that the brushes are worn. My mixer was not going to the top few speed settings and changing the brushes fixed that problem.

My hubby just asked me why there was this pin stickin' out on the side of the mixer... I told him, I'm not sure what it was. Thanks for this video, now I know that we need to tighten up that screw and how to fix it. ( I thought at first, it was a handle for me to hold it when lifting the machine.) 🤪

Thanks for taking the time to comment - I am glad the video helped! I don't think you are wrong on the pin as a handle, it does help when lifting it 😁

Hey!!! You helped me a lot, it fixed one of my main issues and I am so thankful. My other issue is the screw in the bottom that keeps the pin in - mine is no longer there... Long shot here... but do you happen to know the size or part # or name of this screw? I am hoping to get a replacement. - Thanks again so much and have a great day!

Great to hear! Check this site to see if they have your mixer listed and the part number for the set screw: www.ereplacementparts.com/screw-set-p-622311.html You might be able to find one that works in this kit as well and return it if it does not have what you need: amzn.to/3YjUJIe

Thank you for the video! One question, have you ever dealt with a lock not locking? I think there is a screw loose inside, but not sure.
@ThatDadMike Жыл бұрын
Thank you! In some cases, the screw that adjusts the motor housing from wobbling may be slightly over tight causing the lock to not lock. Try to loosen that adjustment screw I show in the video and see if that corrects it.

This is fabulous information- but I wonder if you could help me with one more part... Somehow in moving I have lost the screw on the very top towards the back end of the mixer. Do you have any idea what type/size of screw that is? Thanks!

You might try to adjust the screw a bit more that I show in the video and see if that corrects it. The screw works in tandem with the lock and there should be very little play when locked to prevent the motor from bouncing.

Ok Mike just spoke to a customer service from KitchenAid lovely lady, but not crazy about her advice. She claims that you can’t put more than seven ingredients in my KitchenAid meaning that if I have 5 cups of flour, I have to cut it back down to three or four and a total of seven ingredients. I’m sorry not having ingredients 7 cups. OK also she said that I should not go higher than speed too, when needing dough is not really good advice and this is not gonna be helpful because most of them you have to do it at least by three because it goes faster, but I will try the two and I’ll let you know what Happens but I just thought I’d update you on what was going on here and I thank you for all your help, I’m not sorry that I changed the plate. At least I know it’s new now and I do like the stainless steel hook that I bought so dough hook that is OK so have a great day and keep up the good work thank youbye-bye

Thanks for the update! I bet she meant 7 cups total. Let me know how it goes with a cup or so less flour. I agree, it needs to be on a higher setting. I think I use setting 3 and 4 the most with 4 cups flour and 2 cups water.

Anyway, you could give more advice, I have titans the screw underneath that holds the bar in place. But my classic plus KitchenAid still wobbles yes and no.
@ThatDadMike9 ай бұрын
Is the motor bouncing up and down a bit? If so, slightly turn the screw under the motor where the motor sits on the stand. My classic wobbles a bit but only when it's on a higher setting and I use the dough hook.

The area where the beaters are put, wobbles…or jiggles when they are beating or mixing, like it’s loose…does the adjustment you did, replacing the brushes correct this problem?
@ThatDadMike2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video! The brushes only transfer the electrical power to the mixer. If it is loose or jiggles where it connects to the mixer head when not mixing, it could be the spring-like mechanism that holds the beater in.

Great tutorial! My machine was wobbly and bucking. Got those adjustments done. However before I found your video, I removed the side screw and the bushing popped out. I put it back per your instruction, but my machine does not turn on. Any idea what the problem is and how to solve?
@ThatDadMike2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think the brush may be turned 45 degrees. Try to pull each brush back out and then look inside the motor housing to find out which direction the notch is and then match it to the brush when you put it back in.
