Thanks for inviting me on Kitty, its always interesting talking about "punching-bag" characters. But Joe certainly seems the most tragic just because of *why* he's picked on, and by how many - even his wife hates him! Luckily Joe remains to be one of the funniest characters, which is something that even his biggest bully Peter can't deny, "I know I crap on you alot, but sometimes when I'm driving I think about stuff you said and I laugh."

Does this mean that a Meg episode might be in the near future? Cause while they do treat Joe poorly, it's nothing compared to how Meg is treated. Yes, she has her darker moments show more frequently in comparison, but given what she's been through, is it really that surprising? Her school bully not only put the ark of the covenant in her locker, but Lois and Peter got into a fight when Meg was considering college. We don't see the fight, we just see a tremendously battered Peter say" I'd be happy to drive you meg". Now while this does say something about Lois as well, the fact that being a parent was the consequence of losing the fight. Honestly, the only character who is consistently nice to her is quagmire; and he's only doing it to lure her in.

I think what they tried for was a slow move from Bonnie loving Jo to her resenting him for wasting her life. It might be what you say but it's also a potential scenario for a couple with that dynamic because they were together before Jo became paralysed. Jo can't help it but it is a strain on the relationship, Most people don't consider the possibility of their partner becoming paralysed or what it would entail looking after them they might think they're prepared or that they can manage however that isn't always the case. Working in an aged care facility has given me this insight, Not everyone in there is there because they are too old some are there because conditions become unmanageable and more assistance is needed.For example I remember an episode where Jo explains that they have sex once a year since that's when Jo can rent out the equipment, This could coincide with Bonnie looking for other sources to satisfy herself for the rest of the time she's waiting on the equipment. Not excusing it but you can see the line of thought.

As a wheelchair user, Joe's introduction was actually really refreshing. Every other time you'd see a disabled person on television back then, it was through the "inspiration p0rn" lens. We were on-screen to do average things, be hailed as heros for tying our shoes, and make the non-disabled audience feel good. Joe was an intelligent, capable, salt-of-the-Earth guy that you could see yourself spending time at the Clam with. Now, it's just: "His legs don't work! Isn't that so FUNNY?" I would be offended if it weren't so pathetic. (Just a heads-up, most of us, if not all of us, find terms like "handicapable" to be incredibly condescending, words like handicapped and disabled are not dirty words, you don't need to pretty them up.)
@debbieagyeman3595 Жыл бұрын
Wait so wut r the right terms so ppl can be inclusive or just not being discriminatory?
@Ira_Ross Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was just talking about this with my partner last night. So many of these new terms we're supposed to use come from various lobby groups and activist sects fed into from academia and privileged circles. It's not organic or bottom up, it's top down. Heck, even Latino Democrats in CT tried to ban the use of latinx in state briefings. Pushback to this highlights what our culture actually is, versus what a disconnected media circuit tries to disseminate into it. Social media is just the segment of the country that uses social media, and from there, the loudest voices reign.
@corabloom5959 Жыл бұрын
Yes finally someone sees it! Have a crush on original Joe because out of all the men in Family Guy Joe is a doting father and a loyal husband. He's able to balance being a cop and spending time with his family. He's not perfect but was tired of seeing TV dad's be horrible to their families or prioritize work over them, Joe is finding a healthy balance AS A COP THATS A DEMANDING JOB! Was so pissed how Bonnie treats him. Like he's loyal, he fights crime, he forgives her he doesn't ditch her and she treats him like shit. Meanwhile Peter can be an ass to Meg and Lois yet be seen as a favorite. 🤦♀️ Was hoping to see them split just so Joe could realize to value those who actually like him like his kids and friends and maybe a new nicer love interest.
@Dez861 Жыл бұрын
@@debbieagyeman3595 None of us have ever had an issue being called disabled. "Handicapable" is a term invented by the non-disabled community in an attempt to ... remind themselves that we're human beings, I guess? Or, make themselves feel like they're doing something helpful? I really don't know the how or why behind it; I just know that it was never ours, and we don't claim it.
@MoostachedSaiyanPrince Жыл бұрын
Wait, there are people out there that use the term "handicapable" in a way that isn't intended to be condescending or insulting? WTF? It literally sounds as condescending as possible. Like using that exaggerated calming tone you use to talk at a baby or when speaking with someone with some kind of mental disorder that makes them extremely excitable or easily agitated.

Joe's downward spiral is one of many reasons why Modern Family Guy is so terrible. I have failed back surgery syndrome with a severe spinal stenosis and 3 bulging discs in my lumbar. The pain is immeasurable. My mom, bless her heart, has crps (chronic regional pain syndrome) and her limbs are super sensitive along with a recent few falls in the past 3 years. She gets on me about showering, and ive told her how painful it is to do so and since i dont do much im not going to put forth the effort every day, and she recently felt what my good showers feel like, pain making your body freeze up and pain so intense you feel nauseated and either do or might vomit. Thats a good shower for me. Ive only known pain, at 2 i got ulcerative colitis which almost ended me at 15, 3 surgeries in 2 years for that one, phantom pain to this day from nerves having to be cut, at 23 broken femur from car crash and permanently damaged from that with pins under a major ligament, and with a year of recovery i started working out and spine gave out where i tore the flesh from the paramedic helping me because every move was a heavy blow to me, and yet after that i still paywd off my moms home before i lost my job due to rona, and my doctors said that for a 30 year old now youd guess i was in my 70s by my imaging. 28/30, thats 97% or so. My mom is 55 and in total has had to deal with her most insane amount of pain for a total of 8 years. I thought Patrick was going to hell for having pre married sex with Elaine (1000000 points if you got that reference).

Part of me wonders if the reason why everyone treats Meg like a...how you say...doo doo diaper, is that they know if they treat with any sort of basic respect, she will proceed to obsess, stalk them, and intrude into their lives.

They say that Joe got disabled from being shot in his legs but medically his injuries are more consistent with a lower spinal cord injury. The fact that he has to use a catheter and wear diapers and is hinted at being unable to get an erection to have sex tells me that there's spinal nerve damage at play vs just his legs. He's just paraplegic because the level where the spinal cord ends is above where the nerves that go to the legs so the legs lose function as a kind of downstream effect. But yh if he just got shot in his legs physical therapy might've been able to have him keep his ability to walk

@@LydiaLovesTimelines I've been curious about this:Do you actually resemble your avatar or is it drawn in the American Dad\Family guy art style?

Loved your videos for a while - but for some reason you randomly mentioning Unwind is what prompted me to subscribe. Keep up the good work!

he can walk but not unless if the femoral nerve is damaged, which could result in paralysis

In Joe's first episode, is it bad that I found the JFK Pez Dispenser joke so funny?! Early Family Guy's dark jokes worked so well because they were more infrequent, not drawn out and not excessively gory.

So that's why I love growing up in the country my nearest neighbor was a mile away and the only time they would come down is if either one of their cows got out or their dog got out or of course if there were coyotes killing their chickens we round up all the neighbors and go coyote hunting
