As far as the problematic villains-with-mental-illness trope goes, I feel like Varga's bulimia, ironically, is the most humanizing part of him. It's the one struggle he hides away from the rest of the world to maintain his cold, powerful, ruthless exterior. The look on his face in the bathroom is the most vulnerable and sincere we've seen him at this point in the season. I don't have bulimia myself, so I definitely could be wrong, but that's the way I read it.
@weshouser821 Жыл бұрын
I kind of read it to showcase his greed. Like if you notice he eats ALOT of different food I mean you could feed 6 people with that breakfast. He mentions later to the guy about his fat wife. I looked at this to show that Varga wants to eat as much as possible without getting actually becoming fat.
@amellowblue Жыл бұрын
@@weshouser821 Yeah, he's a predator that enjoys gorging itself as much as it enjoys killing, while Malvo is a more catlike predator that enjoys sneaking around in the green and not being noticed
@mzytryck Жыл бұрын
@@weshouser821 I agree, and I think it also shows his misanthropy and hypocrisy. He repeatedly shows throughout the season how much contempt he has for people in general, so I think it gives him pleasure to eat lots of food if only to stop other people from getting it and make the cooks go through the effort of making it. I notice that even though we see him eating food from all different plates, we don't actually see whether he finishes them; I can easily see him leaving the dishes unfinished, but now spoiled so the cooks (likely not well-paid, and thus worth less than rich people in his philosophy) have to bin the leftovers and make a fresh meal for the next customer. I can also see him being amused by the knowledge that by wasting food and labour (and thus increasing its scarcity) he would be very slightly contributing to rising prices, causing more suffering for those who don't have money to burn. Of course, since his last line in the season is to claim that he hates waste, it just goes to show what a complete hypocrite he is. I think this may be to contrast him with Malvo, who seemed to sincerely believe in the twisted philosophy he espoused and so showed genuine respect to people who lived up to his standards and died (relatively) gracefully when two unwilling students of his beat him at his own game. Varga is, first and foremost, a total prick who enjoys petty bullying, so it makes sense that his philosophical musings are pure pretension to show off his superiority, rather than honest convictions, and him wasting food in this way shows that quite clearly.

I never understood why V.M Varga threw up, why his teeth looked messed up and why he picked at it.. but looking at this scene, I get it. He said he wears cheap clothes and takes coach/economy in airplanes because he wants to appear poor. So, the idea is, fat men meant (back in roman times anyway) that they were wealthy and had status. Because of that, he becomes bulimic. He has an insatiable hunger and he throws it up to stay thin. When the stomach acids are constantly around your gums and teeth, it erodes the enamel and causes infection.. For those infections, bacteria or other things build up and cause pain, so when he picks his teeth, it releases them causing relief like from a bad itch.

I feel stupid for not realising this yet, but the name 'Varga' could mean a lot more than I once thought. Of course this is all probably mumbo jumbo. Varga is bulimic, binging and purging, which shows some greed where he wastes food, which just clicked in my brain. Varga is very similar to 'Vargulf', which I believe is a wasteful wolf, which kills cattle but does not eat (from the best of my memory) A similarity in names is nothing, though, just thought it was intriguing.

Also quite ironic because in the last scene he mentions he hates nothing more than waste. But he eats so much food, just to throw up afterwise every time. Only too eat more.
