I was in a boat fishing three weeks after total knee replacement surgery. It hurt like crazy for an hour but the longer I had my knee bent at a 90 degree angle the better it felt. But I had more mobility in my knee than any of my three therapists had ever seen right away. The day after surgery my therapist couldn’t believe how much mobility I had already. I worked it hard from the time I got back to my room after surgery.

I am a young 63 year old guy and prior to having my full right knee replacement 10 days ago spent 5 days a week at the gym. Recovery is going ok, tough but ok. I’m walking around the house without sticks, able to walk upstairs without sticks, but not down yet. Im the most impatient person on the planet and I’m itching to get back into the gym, is it too early? Area I am struggling with is ROM and it’s frustrating the hell out of me. I’m at 85o flexion and about 5o extension.
@KneeReplacementTherapists11 ай бұрын
Generally speaking yes it is way to early to get back in the gym. However you could consult and be assessed by a PT and they may be able to instruct you in some basic exercises you can do to help aid your recovery and “scratch the itch” so to speak to get back in the gym. Surgery is definitely a marathon so work back into things slowly and progressively.

4:00 am. Thanks for the great information. I’m currently waiting for total knee replacement surgery, but it won’t be until June 30th. Im 72 years old and in good health other than my knee. I trying to do pre surgery exercises to hopefully shorten my recovery time. I’m managing the pain fairly well but sleeping at night is a problem. Any suggestions? I’ve tried pads and braces but still can’t get through the night without pain. Also, I’m Ann avid golfer and play at least twice a week. I use to walk but now take a cart for the last month or so. Even so. It seems that after a round my knee flares up for two or three days. Am I doing more damage to my knee by continuing to play golf up until my surgery.sorry for being a bit long winded. Thanks Dennis
@KneeReplacementTherapists Жыл бұрын
Here is a playlist all related to managing sleep you can check out: kzbin.info/aero/PLmjdDYgvJ_hXs1zOpwlVGMI_gD0II3n-f In terms of playing golf, I don't think you are going to excessively damage the knee. Although it may lead to symptoms this doesn't mean the arthritis in the knee is getting worse or that the surgery will be any different. Your main consideration should be your symptoms during and after playing golf... Low to moderate symptoms are probably manageable and okay, but if your symptoms are significant enough to cause a flare-up that lasts multiple days, you may want to back off some... shorter rounds? 1x per week? will have to determine what works for you.

I subscribed to your channel recently right after watching one of your videos. My knees are very bad and it looks like total knee replacement is a must. I won’t lie when I tell you I am scared. I’m afraid of the pain afterwards and my expectations afterward. I know many people have this done and everyone is different. On average, what % better can you expect your knee to be providing you are doing exercises regularly?
@KneeReplacementTherapists2 жыл бұрын
Great question! I think I would say for many individuals after about 6 months or more after surgery they would say their knees are 80-90% completely better... this mean a lot better mobility, range of motion, ability to tolerate activities, decreased pain and symptoms... however you can still have some lingering symptoms of pain, stiffness, swelling although for most people far less than before surgery. I will say though that some studies have shown about 20% or 1/5 individuals aren't fully satisfied with their knee replacement, and this is for a variety of reasons... but then that also means 80% do have great outcomes from surgery...hope this helps.

How did tkr go?
@slundgr2 жыл бұрын
Do you recommend a core group of exercises patients do 2 to 3 times a day every day? Do you vary the exercises from one day to the next? I think one can try to do too much or too many exercises, and we can reach the law of diminishing returns. It's key to find that balance so we work smarter, not just harder. I walk about 30 minutes one to two times a day, every day, and it seems to help when my knee/leg are stiff.
@KneeReplacementTherapists2 жыл бұрын
Great question! So usually I'll provide people with maybe 5-6 main exercises to focus on outside of PT and change / adjust these as the rehab progresses. In the PT session then I try to add a little more variability and progression.. I absolutely agree with your comment about doing too much. Really if you are doing a handful of exercises a few times a day you'll be okay. I'll also notice a diminishing adherence to an exercise program if you load someone up too much, especially if they weren't big exercisers before surgery. Also, walking is a great, simple exercise and I always stress consistency is the key!

What about starting on a carnivore diet (All protein diet) weeks before surgery, and several months after surgery?
@KneeReplacementTherapists Жыл бұрын
Protein intake is important before and after surgery for many reasons. However, I thin incorporating plant-based foods (fruits and vegetables) provides you with lots of nutrients including many important for tissue healing and that have anti-inflammatory benefits. So, I personally recommend incorporating these foods, but am by no means an expert when it comes to nutrition. Thanks for the good question!

@KneeReplacementTherapists Жыл бұрын
Continue to focus on your therapy exercises for stretching, range of motion. These exercises will improve the mobility in the knee and this will carryover to walking. Also focus on strengthening exercises that will help mobility. Lastly continue to do some walking every day even if you have pain, with practice and repetitions your tolerance and gait pattern will improve. Give it time and understand you are still relatively early in your recovery, it can take up to 6 months or longer

@KneeReplacementTherapists Жыл бұрын
A revision surgery is more complicated and more intensive compared to a regular knee replacement… your surgeon has to remove the original knee replacement and use the bone you have remaining, and there is typically some additional components to stabilize the new replacement.. also you are 8 years older and may not be as physically fit and healthy as you were for the first surgery so the recovery may take longer and be more difficult… but the vast majority of times folks who undergo revision surgery make a significant recovery and see improvements in symptoms and mobility.

I’m sorry to hear that your recovery has been challenging. It might be helpful to focus on gentle strengthening and mobility exercises that your doctor or physical therapist recommends. They can provide tailored guidance to ensure you're progressing safely. Also, consider incorporating rest periods when standing or doing activities to avoid overexertion. Keep communicating with your healthcare team-they’re there to support you through this.

HELP! My mom had a hip replacement January last year and her knee replacement about 5 months ago but has been on the walker heavy still. I personally don’t think her physical therapy is challenging enough but she swears they do a excellent job. When I say she DRAGS the walker I mean it’s like she’s putting all her weight depending on it. She cannot even go to the bathroom across the hall without it. She’s almost 6months post surgery am I being harsh to say her progress should be more progressed?
@KneeReplacementTherapists Жыл бұрын
Every person will progress differently, a lot of it depends on her physical and functional status prior to surgery. It is good to push and motivate in a positive manner but be sure she is also getting time to rest and recover and is also remaining safe. It is a balancing act. If you have concerns I recommend asking your mom if you can attend a therapy session and both of you have a conversation with the therapist to discuss her progress. Hope this helps!
