Just took delivery of my Rough Rider 1806 Barlow today. I am amazed at the quality and value. It gleams, blades have half stops, perfect snap, beautiful bone, good and sharp. It's hard to stop looking at it. I will order more for gifts. A knife one can be proud of. I have about 7 Case knives and another coming in the mail from Ebay. RR is getting near Case in quality.

Saturday, is going to be a longer one. I'm trying to get into a rhythm of a knife review on Wednesday and then a a more comprehensive video on Saturday morning. and then if something come up during the week, just something spontaneous. Glad you enjoyed the review. The stag bone is a good line from Rough Ryder.

@@KnifeChatswithTobias The Barlow is the only one I have in the brown stag bone, but I will be buying more because I like it, and I believe the entire line has half stops. I like half stops, not for the supposed safety reason which to me is ridiculous, but I just enjoy the nice walk and talk factor of them. I've only started to appreciate traditional knives in the last year or so, so i have a lot of learning to do. I appreciate your videos, because they have helped me a lot in that learning process.

@@timbo4374 , the little Cub is not a half stop but that's because its a back lock. Back locks and half stops don't mix well! So far all of the Rough Ryder I've bought in stag bone other than cub do halve the half stop.

I really like the horseshoe on the white smooth bone barlow. I find the big "R" to be a bit garish but the horseshoe understated and classy.

I just received 5 RR's yesterday. First time purchase. Cub 1790, Barlow 1860, Trapper 1070, Moose high carbon 1569, and a canoe 1571. All are perfect but the high carbon's have tiny space in back but absolutely no problem for me, looks natural, like hand made. Thanks for the advice. An old timer carving knife just arrived, haven't opened it yet. I'm in Canada so it's cheaper to buy a few at once and pay one shipping because if I buy them here the shipping charges are already included individually in each knife which makes it real expensive. I already have a few more picked out. Not sure what the situation is going to be in the world in which we are now living but I know it's going to be different so time to get what I can when I can

James, they are a quality knife. The prices has crept up a few dollars in the last few years but so has the quality. But, yeah. There might be a bigger bump soon. Hopefully their won’t be a mad hoarding rush like there was on toilet paper!

@@KnifeChatswithTobias I think you are right the Bow Trapper is a good useable knife and looks way more interesting than the standard. My RR White Bone Barlow has the mirror R tang stamp with Ryder spelled with an i. RR198. It doesn't have the horseshoe stamp on mine. Do you know if there is a list of model numbers for all Rough Ryder's with description & approximate manufacture date? Andy at SMKW probably knows. I keep hoping they restock some of their older, out of stock models still listed on their site.
@KnifeChatswithTobias4 жыл бұрын
They have had several production runs on the white smooth bone knives. They all have the same pattern number. I will try and do a video on the major Rough Ryder tang stamps with approximate dates. I do know the earliest is the Rough Rider Signature, followed by the Horseshoe The Mirror RR tang stamps was the more recent just before the move to Rough Ryder. I believe the "Mirror RRs" showed up around the time Colt ended its knife making contract with SMKW (2015). I'll also try and sort out the shields.
@WilliamsKnifeLife4 жыл бұрын
@@KnifeChatswithTobias Thank you. I knew the two people who would know about Rough Ryder history would be you, & Andy. I could have been collecting these throughout my life, but only recently rediscovered traditional knives. Now I can't get enough of them. So much more interesting than G10, Titanium, and some "super steel". I don't mind if traditionals upgrade their steel. It just never was an issue about a knife holding an edge forever. If you know how to sharpen a knife, you will never carry a dull knife, no matter what the steel is made of. Sorry, I got off track there.

Barlows are certainly very handy patterns and one of my favorites, too. RR does a very nice job on their bone, especially considering the price! I agree that there is no need for a shield on the cover of a Barlow as it looks disproportionate with the long bolster. Thanks for another excellent video!
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
JJ Cahill, that is a very good point. The shield just look out of place. Thanks for your comments and dropping by!

My Rough Ryder Barlow has no pins on the handles (scales) I cannot find it anywhere do you know anything about why it doesn't? It has what looks to be smooth bone for the handles it has all markings consistent with all the other Barlow models except no pins.
@KnifeChatswithTobias3 жыл бұрын
Which model is it. Some with acrylic handles do not have exposed pins or are just glued on. This is especially true with pearl.
@ramblers695 жыл бұрын
Great looking Barlow, would have to agree, the shield would look better on the bolster, :)
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I think they do it this way to speed up production but I’d pay more for a proper Barlow Bolster and I’m sure it would sell better. It’s a very popular pattern. If the companies put a little effort into them they could easily rival Trappers in popularity and sales.

I really like the barlow design. But haven't got one I prefer to buy stockman or congress with 4 blades. It's for my whittling hobby. Would a Barlow be a good idea for using with carving
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
I will have to ask one of my whittling friends and get back to you. I have not done enough wood carving to give you an informed answer. I do know that barlows have a strong pivot point and both pen and clip blades are used for whittling. I also know I find the handle quite comfortable. But I don't feel that is enough to answer your question.

What's the best way to sharpen a Rough Rider pocketknife? I'm a noob. What kind of grind do most of them have?

Forgive my ignorance,but is stag bone made from a deer antler or bone of a cow?
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
Nothing to be forgiven for! Totally legitimate question. Stag bone is typically cow bone that has been jigged and dyed to look like deer antler. You may also here folks talk about a "stagalon or Stag delrin" These are actually made of delrin or other types of thermoplastics that have been molded and dyed to look like deer antler. It's a ll a cheaper alternative to actual deer and elk antler, especially when antler is in short supply! Some of it looks great, some of it is absolutely ugly!

Looks like it’s dead on 3 1/4” closed?
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
Probably just the camera angle. SMKW/Rough Ryder gives the closed length at 3.375 which is 3 1/8 inch That would be 85.725mm which is actually 86mm, not the 84 mm quoted. I think the knife is actually 3 5/16 right between 3 1/4 and 3/3/8 (3.3 inches)

I dunno. What is it with Rough Ryder? I have a few and I daresay I'll be getting a few more. They're fun, they work well, and they're unbeatable value. Yet... if only they could reduce (the girth, the weight, the thickness of everything, the logos, the action) by about a quarter, they could lose that 'clunkiness' which I'm not keen on. There again, it might be a brand feature because you certainly know it's a RR when you pick one up.

Scout knife 👍
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Rough Ryder totally ignores the scout/camp knife only two in their entire line up. I’m not sure why they don’t consider it other popular handle materials. SMKW put the five blade in the Marbles line up. I think that was mistake. It should’ve gone with the Rough Ryders and in a popular series.
@blueeyeswhitedragon98395 жыл бұрын
@@KnifeChatswithTobias :- Agreed. I just picked up the SMKW Marbles Scout ( my wife has it at the moment) but a Bone/Stag RR ( or 2) would be really nice.
@jtucci57115 жыл бұрын
I wish they would use the horseshoe logo on all the models they feel compelled to ruin the bolster. The "Big R" IMHO is very unattractive and I sometimes pass on a knife that has one, the horseshoe I could live with but once again and always with a RR how can one complain for the price.
