For the Howl’s coat collar, try making a vertical stitch, maybe a single crochet rib 10-15 stitches tall so that it sticks up

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but it's so amazingly coincidental in my opinion that you decided to make Howl's jacket by sewing individual diamonds together because in the book Sophie cuts up one of his suits into triangles and has to sew them all back together 😅 Amazing video, I am gobsmacked at how you managed to recreate Rory's sweater in particular!

I've done it with long double crochets, crochet cable and such. I don't have a tutorial or anything sorry, but I can say it's possible and there's a video with similar twisting pattern :] (crochet folklore sweater)
@heidih3048
@heidih3048 Жыл бұрын
As an experienced knitter and crocheter, to me it seems unlikely that a crochet version would work well-- it would be more stiff/less flexible and comfortable to wear, and for some textured knit stitches, such as seed stitch, there is no way to recreate a similar texture in crochet. Crochet cables also do not work as well as knit cables-- they are not flexible, and to make them, a much greater amount of yarn is used than with knitting. And the finished look is not the same. I guess I am trying to say that it is worthwhile to learn to knit as well as crochet-- though knitting is tricky at first, it becomes as easy as crochet with practice.

I love that you just jumped in and analyzed and recreated it ! When I started knitting, I used a pattern for my first sweater, then jumped into designing and knitting a super elaborate cable sweater for my dad. It was black long mohair held together / with charcoal wool. I had no idea that this would be considered an impossible nightmare that nobody would try. I didn’t go blind, and the sweater’s cables are magnificent in the right light. My dad wore it for around 25 years for holiday parties and Christmas shopping. He loved that everybody, including pretty young sakes girls insisted on petting and stroking “The Sweater”. So jump in, create, and be proud if the magic that can happen. In your case, I guess swatching would have led you to finer yarn or smaller needles, at any rate, you could have done a little math to estimate how big it was going to be. (no judgement here) But on the other hand, it still looks terrific on you, and will be fun to wear.

On the how's jacket: maybe you could thread a thin wire into the outer part of thecollar to make it stay up? Or thread cotton yarn within the outer part? So you won't need to do it again to give the effect you want.

Im currently working on a howl cardigan myself! Most patterns I've looked at have single crochets and I realized I don't hate myself enough to do that- I've just edited my own pattern to half-double crochets, for a more light-weight feel while keeping a bit of shape. I absolutely LOVE yours, though, you did an awesome job

the way you figured out the cable sweater was really impresive!! just 1 tip, the stitches next to the diamond cable are actually just stockinette, but reverse, not garter. So you knit on the wrong side and purl on the right side. This is always the stitch that's used beside knit stitch cables because it really makes the cable pop

Your Rory sweater is incredible, especially as you didn’t know what each stitch was before you started 😵 great job identifying the stitches and making the pattern correctly. I’m a pretty confident knitter so I have some tips: To keep the cuffs rolled up you could tack them (sew them down in a small section) in 2-4 places around the cuff. The fibre (wool vs acrylic) doesn’t stop it from unrolling; usually a sleeve has decreases towards the wrist cuff, and if the cuff is narrower than the rest of the sleeve, it’ll hold the roll in place. Also, since the sleeve is so long and you need to roll the cuff several times it’s really heavy, which contributes to it unrolling. Furthermore, garter stitch is not very common as a “background” for cables, it’s usually reverse stockinette stitch (the purl side facing out), but they do look very similar so I can see how you got there. Either way, you’ve done a great job, keep knitting!!!
