I am so grateful that i stumbled upon this video. Not only is the multi-dp needle process and joining the round explained, but you are the first person I've ever seen who knits the same way I do--holding the yarn on the left index finger. Thank you so much/!

Thank you so much for your videos, I wish my grandmother was alive to enjoy your channel! She was an expert, and she enjoyed to try new stitches, and had a ton of books and magazines about knitting. She was the kind of person who didn't even need to look at what she was knitting, and she did fancy stuff. Oh she would have been thrilled.

Thank you for this excellent tutorial! You did it the correct way: I don't use a slip knot either. Why bother? And you did the right thing of using FOUR needles for the knitting, working with a fifth. Makes it SOOOOO much easier for beginners! Finally, a correct video on using double pointed needles in the round!

Patterns usually tell you if you should use a set of four or five and how to distribute them. You could use whichever you feel comfortable with, but would have a different number of sts on the needles than used in the pattern, and if there are decreases/increases or special techniques used in the pattern, you may need to make adjustments like slipping a stitch from the next needle onto your working needle if you need to decrease, and the stitches you need to decrease aren't on the same needle.

Easiest method I've seen so far to transfer the beginning stitches to the other needles by pushing them all to the tip of the cast-on needle and letting them expand onto each tip of the other needles.

@Jo Reding I don't remember if any of the cable stitches I have used a dpn. It is easy though, just use them the same way you would a regular cable needle. Slide the stitches on, then either knit off them or put them back on the left needle when ready to knit them.

Holding the "tail and working yarn together", brilliant!!! I'm a beginning knitter and first time with the DPN's. Have cast on multiple times as this is a practice project, cast on again as that one tip has made so much sense I had to try it. I love your video, the pace is great for a beginner and it's so clear and well made! Thank you SO much. I am going to look for more of your video's. I still can't quite duplicate your knit motion. I have a twist to mine and seem to split the yarn more often than I'd like. Trying to duplicate your knit motion. I'm on a k1p1 project and have some confidence with the purl motion. Now, to find your purl video.

+LAMasterGardener @iknitwithcatfur Also, I learned to knit using the English method. I've knit a hot pad, a scarf that my husband loves, and several swatches of just practice stitches. I've been so intimidated by the whole knitting concept for years. DPN's; NO way!!!! Well, low and behold, after seeing so many other knitters on IG and driving myself crazy with wanting to cast on, the only pattern that seemed approachable required DPN's. So, on the same day I chose the pattern, I re-learned to knit using the Continental method, started a project on DPN's, learned a new CO, and I love it! It takes time and patience and the willingness to keep going even when there's a mistake. I saw your Continental and was so relieved. I don't know why the English method is even taught; Continental is so much easier and understandable. All of it looks intimidating at first, but jump in and figure it out! SO rewarding to be doing something I've wanted to do my entire life.

Pleas help! I cast on dpn continental stile, then do rib stitch k1p1, i was very carefull not to twist stitches nor do any mistakes, but when i start to knit with another colour stockinette i start to notice that my one side os a stitch higher like my knitwork would get into a spiral. And i just don't know what i did wrong...
@iknitwithcatfur
@iknitwithcatfur 7 жыл бұрын
You aren't doing anything wrong. When you knit in the round, you are knitting in a spiral, it isn't really a circle. So because you are working in a spiral, there is a jog when you add a new color. Here is good info on avoiding the jog if you find it bothersome: techknitting.blogspot.com/2007/01/jogless-stripes.html

It secures the tail, you don't have to do that, it is just how I prefer to do it. And yes, it is a two stranded stitch, you would just work them together as one on the following round.

@iknitwithcatfur
@iknitwithcatfur 7 жыл бұрын
Wooden or bamboo needles have a little grab to them, which makes it easier for the yarn to stay on the needles so many people prefer to use those over metal. It's not you, most yarn tends to be happy to slide right off the needles :-)

If you're pattern calls for double pointed needles can you use circular needles instead ? The reason I'm asking is for socks. Can you do a tutorial on socks but with circular when pattern calls for 4 DP needles? Thank you
@iknitwithcatfur
@iknitwithcatfur 9 жыл бұрын
You can knit socks with circulars, there are a few different methods (2 at a time for example). Many people use the magic loop method for sock knitting with circulars. I'm afraid I don't like knitting socks, and have ever only used DPNs for the few pair I've made. Craftsy has some sock classes, I am not certain if any of them use circulars though. Here is a website with free sock tutorials on circulars, you might find some help there. www.cometosilver.com/socks/

I do not enjoy sewing the sweater together after completion. I want to knit the sleeves in the round (until I need to bind off for the raglan sleeve.) The instructions say to increase 1 stitch on each side for several inches. Is this possible in the round? I'm not sure where to increase.
@iknitwithcatfur
@iknitwithcatfur 10 жыл бұрын
Ellen Dumelle I don't knit sweaters, nor have I ever changed a pattern that was designed to be knit flat into circular knitting - but I think you could make one increase at the beginning of the round, after the first stitch, then the second increase at the end of the round, before the first stitch. You might want to check around on a forum such as Knitting Help, I am sure someone there will be able to offer advice. Good luck!

This is great! Thanks so much. I have one question- so when a pattern calls for one set of DPNs, you can either use a set of four needles or five and it won't matter as long as you divide the stitches among the needles equally and save one empty needle for knitting. Is that right? Or do some patterns work better with a set of 4 needles? Thank you!
