Here's the link to the FREE PATTERN:
www.garnstudio...
From start to finish, I knit a top down cabled sweater. There's a lot of unravelling to fix mistakes, and I try to decide between a tapered sleeve or a balloon sleeve.
I also show how I wet block the final piece which is also how I like to maintain and wash my knitted pieces.

I can relate to the unraveling so much... My mum always tells me I'm insane to redo something... But there's just something at the back of one's mind that won't let you continue until you sort out the mistake or if the look isn't what one wants... Thank you for the amazing content...

@@aestheticanzi Yes, the yarn gets kinks, but it's still workable for me. Plus, I find wet blocking helps to smooth everything out in the end.

I am VERY NEW to top down sweater knitting (and a left-handed knitter to boot). Watching your video has given me the courage to rip out what does not look right. I just finished a sweater for my adult daughter and realized the sleeves did not match. I only had to rip 5 inches but do not think I would have done this had I not watched your video first. By the way, I clamped the 2 sleeves together with a huge binder clip while I made the corrections. Worked like a charm!! Thanks for a great tutorial!
@ToTheKnitPoint

Sorry for the late reply. Using the clamps sounds like a great hack to keep the 'live' stitches in tact. As a new knitter, it's very creative of you to come up with this idea. Thanks so much for sharing this with me. I'm sure knitters of all levels will appreciate this tip. Happy knitting Barbara! :)

Thank you so much for this video. It made me realize that it is worth unraveling something that isn’t working in order to try again. I’d unraveled, frogged, and tinked the Simple Swancho from MDK many times. I’d get upset with myself for errors or misunderstandings, and wonder if I should just ditch the project and use the wool for something else. But I love the wool, and am intrigued by the pattern, so I definitely want to finish it. You showed me that it's okay to start again and to experiment if need be, just to have a garment that I will love wearing. I love the sweater you made and hope you enjoy it for a long time. You look great in it!

Love your videos! For the sleeve-not-looking-right situation, I usually do one sleeve, see what needs to be adjusted, do the adjustment to the other sleeve without unraveling the first one yet, try and compare, then decide which one needs to be unraveled. Personally I think it’s more convenient and you only need to unravel once if you end up using the original version. Hope it helps 😊

Thanks for the comment! Normally I would do what you suggested, but at the time I didn't think I would go for a balloon sleeve at all which was why I unravelled everything. Thanks for the suggestion though. It always good to be more mindful next time :)

I stumbled across your channel and immediately watched every single video you've uploaded. These are so soothing. Love the little captions and music choices. Also love the craftsmanship and that you use materials that are easily available to everyone such as your yarn choices and what I believe are the Loops and Thread Interchangeable needle sets found at craft shops such as Michaels. Really highlights the fact that you don't need a 200 dollar needle set or 25.00 per skein yarn to make beautiful finished garments.

Thanks so much! It's nice to have more high end tools/yarn once in a while, especially if it's a treat for oneself. But I've always felt it's the effort and care that's invested into a knitted project that truly shines in the end. So in this case, quality is what matters most to me. Plus, I always need to touch and feel yarn before I buy it LOL so being able to pop into my local Micheals to feel the yarn is super important when purchasing! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for watching the rest of them! :)

Thank you for this video. I have been curious about top-down knitting and how much easier, faster it is supposed to be. Long ago, I switched from piece knitting to circular needle knitting because I also sew, and to me, sewing skill is fine with already woven fabrics and much like putting together a puzzle (a fun time with family when growing up), but definitely not any fun at all to weave (knit) the fabric and then sew it together. Seems like double work as far as I am concerned. I also really love cables. Additionally, I hate having to carry a purse, so pockets are necessary. So I made several patterns knit from the bottom up, all in one piece without seams, with a through-pocket (like those found in hoodies), gussets to ease stress and avoid holes at the underarms, and with a glorious number and variety of cables. I wanted to know if this was possible from the top down, and your video was the only one I found with cables. So, thank you for your patience, and for your work. However, if this is the way cables turn out when knit top-down, I think I will pass. Reason: not enough cables, plus, it really doesn't seem 'easier' or 'faster' to me for the product at the end.

I love the change you made to this pattern to reduce the width of the cable panels. Looks amazing. I appreciate that your show beautiful, yet accessible options for knitters. Knitting does not have to be done on super expensive needles with alpaca/silk/mohair blend. There are many good free patterns out there and imagination is key. Thank you. One question... the first time you unraveled the sleeves - what did you not like about them and what did you change for the final sleeves.
@ToTheKnitPoint

The first attempt was balloon sleeves. Then I changed my mind and tried to go for straighter sleeves, but it fit really awkwardly. Plus, it looked odd to me. From the forearm to the wrist, it was too fitted. So finally, I went with my initial sleeve which was the balloon sleeve. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for commenting :)

I would use lukewarm water for wet blocking. Cold water can shock the yarn and cause felting.

Actually, from my experience, warm water felts yarn. I always use cold because it doesn't disrupt the fabric in any way but still allows the stitches to relax.

Bu yaptığınız,birçok sabırsız insana,sabredildiğinde sonucun çok güzel olacağını anlatıyor.Üstelik müsrif olmamayı,olmadığında savurup atmamayı anlatıyor.Malesef bu devirde insanlar çok savurgan.

the worst part about unraveling knitting for me is getting it back on the needle! that's half the reason i crochet more nowadays

I suggest picking up the stitches using a much smaller needle. It makes it so much easier and faster. Then you can transfer the stitches back onto the regular needle and continue your project. Hope this helps and thanks for the comment :)

Thank you for the comment! It took me about 2 months because I kept changing my mind about the sleeve, and I put the project off for a while. Typically sweaters take me about 1-2 weeks if I dedicate my time to it.

Heyyy, I was wondering how do you get rid of the saddle shoulders?? I am still a newbie knitter 😭
@ToTheKnitPoint
@ToTheKnitPoint 2 жыл бұрын
This is a top down raglan sweater, so there is no saddle shoulder? I've never knit a saddle shoulder before. This pattern definitely does not include one for the shoulders. I recommend having a look at the pattern, link is in the description. Hope this answers your question!

I noticed in the description and in the video you say “US size 7 or 5 mm needles”, a US size 7 is 4.5 mm

I’m very confused with the needles. I have the needles you’ve written in the description which it looks like you used in the beginning for the collar and sleeves, but there’s no way they can wrap around my body like yours do when you’re working on the body, and I’m sure those are much longer needles but they’re not mentioned in the description. I’m a beginner so I don’t know if there are unspoken rules that you switch to a longer needle length, but if you could get back that would be great! Thank you so much for the video

Hi k v, My mistake, I've just updated the info in my description. I used US size 7 or 5mm circular needles in 36" cable length.

I so enjoyed watching this and it's beautiful! I noticed the pattern called for DK weight yarn and you used worsted. Did you knit it in a smaller size? I want to make one with worsted also, but I'm not sure how much larger changing the yarn weight would make it.
@ToTheKnitPoint
@ToTheKnitPoint 2 жыл бұрын
I knitted my usual size. Using worsted weight yarn will make the piece slightly larger, but because it is raglan you can adjust how oversized you want it. For example, the longer the raglan seam is, the bigger the sweater. The shorter the raglan seam is, the smaller the sweater. So I recommend trying on the piece here and there to ensure you are happy with the fit. For the collar, I did not cast on the number of stitches the pattern called for. I went with a smaller number to accomodate using worsted weight yarn. Use a number you know works for a nice fitting collar. After completing the collar, I properly increased to start the cabling pattern. From this point, I followed the cable chart and increased accordingly at the raglans. Raglans are easy to adjust in size, so don't worry too much about the fit of the body. Focus more on how the collar will fit and just make sure you've increased properly to start the cabling pattern. And honestly, don't be afraid to unravel and tink back if you have to :) Hope this helps. (Sorry for writing a novel)

@ToTheKnitPoint

I just used a yarn weight that I am familiar working with. I tend to use the same cast on number for the collar when working with worsted weight yarn, so thats mainly what I did to alter the pattern. After the collar, I made sure to increase correctly for the cabling. Plus, raglan sweaters are very easy to adjust in fit. I hope this answers your question!

This is beautiful work, but wouldn't you save time by working out the increases according to your measurements or use the measurements of a sweater that fits you well? I hate ripping out, and hate knitting with ripped out yarn!
