Knock- offs like these are why so many people think swiss army knives are junk.

It's amazing that Victorinox's smallest knife is 10x better quality and more durable than any of those big Chinese knives.

If you can, bring in some cans and bottles to open and some apples and paper to cut next time. It would be a lot of fun to see how they'd fare. I'm sure it would be a total disaster, except for the Italian and German models, which are better rip-offs.

@@dukigmail6655 I have a knock off too since the late 90s and not that bad! I used it many-many camping, hiking and works well! (Mine with a "Q" shape simbol) The building quaility is not as good as the original, but I used and use it with pleasure. The knife works well, the saw not bad. The scissors not to good, and screwdriver started to wear out because of quality of the metal, but I can say chinese knock offs not that bad, if you not a hard user, i say you will be happy with it.

I bought a knife at ACE hardware and I'm not sure if it's genuine but it does say on the main blade "victorinox Swiss made stainless"

Hello Dan, as you mentioned, older models from Solingen are often very well made. I own four knives of the KAUFMANN brand (K55K), which were bought by OTTER. OTTER is famous for the Mercator knife ... and Mercator is the Latin name for KAUFMANN...Kaufmann is the German name for Merchant...🙄complicated 😉. They have an excellent quality that can easily keep up with Victorinox or Wenger. Unfortunately, these knives have not been manufactured for a long time, but with luck, you can still find them at flea markets. Best regards Joe

I just picked up an SD classic with orange scales the other day brand new. These orange scales I’ve never seen before, not translucent and not the orange with the white stripe just orange.

The first time I set foot into a flea market looking for cheap Swiss Army knives I was onto these ‘jokers’. I saw ‘ Stainless China ‘ and I knew, what to avoid. Of note at 6:39 : the Italian knock-off, the corkscrew does have a groove. Good video , information worth knowing. Thank you sir!

I get the impression that during the 60s/70s/early 80s loads of non Swiss knife makers had their version of the SAK including US companies. The better ones are interesting even though many are just camp/scout knives with red plastic scales put on them.

I picked up a knock off huntsman at the dollar tree just to see how horrible it was and it was honestly hilarious how bad it was ..the only thing remotely useable was the bottle opener..I literally tore the whole thing apart with my bare hands

Send the Wenger into Victorinox to fix it. They offered to put new scales on my Wenger if I send it to them. If nothing else, go to their site and email them and ask them. I'm pretty sure they will fix it.

Thank you for this Video. For such crap they waste ressources. If i had a tool factory i would produce quality or leave it entirely. Even if you might not make that much miney with it. I dont want anything like that in my aparrment.

Thanks for watching! Agreed. It’s amazing how high the quality is for Victorinox at such an affordable price, even though they have had a lot of cost cutting measures over the years

The ISC is a bit more than a knockoff... They were made by GML ("Adler" brand) in the former East Germany. The companies for sure cooperated for the GAK with GML refinishing and assembling Vic stamped parts (confirmed by Robert Elsener). I suspect that their cooperation dates back to even before when in the DDR you could buy "Foron" branded GML knives virtually indistinguishable from the contemporary 80s Vics (and if you think about it the ISC with its no half-stop cap lifter looks a lot like an 80s Victorinox SAK). I'm thinking Victorinox either provided them with drawings or just sent them parts like later for the GAK and got some sort of unofficial license fee. Genuine SAKs were too expensive for Easterners anyway due to the low value of the Ostmark with respect to the swiss franc so it also made financial sense, after all the knives weren't originally for export outside the eastern Bloc.

The Chinese knockoffs are terrible, my grandpa had one from Nat Geo and I got one from the NRA. Companies use them as cheap freebies, but are they worth it? 😆

You know, you're exactly right I think it ends up working against companies when they put their name on crap like that. I had a MAC National Geographic Leatherman type plier based tool, it was not worth its weight in dirt
