Another extremely informative video by Mike the Scrapper. I really enjoy all your videos and can see the improvement over time. There are so many times I want to go back and see a particular part of a video but can't remember where it is, the timeline seems like a great idea. A "Table of Contents" if you will. set it face down over a bucket, and slowly heat with a torch. most chips and connectors will fall into bucket. Some may need a little "persuasion". i use a hammer to gently hit back of board. Practice on one you dont care about first, as i burned my first one. but after i got the hang of it, takes about 15 min to clear the board

I 've checked out boardsort before, left me kind of confused, your video was more helpful, I understand they want heatsinks and large capacitors removed. I have a local scrapyard, sims metal mgmt nearby that buys escrap and I've separated all my lowgrade boards (I 've been scrapping lots of tvs, crt and flatscreens) from the others, I removed the heatsinks, ICs and copper/transformers the the lowgrade boards and the power boards but I have some boards from a pc and some routers and printers and the flatscreens, they look like midgrade or periphial, they have the gold corner chips and lots o f IC's and some gold pins or plating on the boards. I'm not even sure if it is enough weight to bother selling yet, maybe 20 lbs, low grade I have alot. I will go in today to sell my wire,motors,copper and aluminum and ask about the escrap. Do you have anymore videos you'd recommend for a new scrapper?

Judging motherboards by color or socket size is nonsense. Just about every motherboard is made in China or Taiwan, it is made by OEMs to whatever quality specified by the vendor. Some vendors may have a budget line and a premium line, so brand alone does not say much about the quality either...

Htims Nhoj Yeah, older PC's and motherboards are graded differently and the fact that you do have a modem in your PC DOES mean it most likely is worth more because it is older!!! Just another case of the blind leading the blind because they have a video camera and a KZbin account. HINT just because you can record yourself doesn't make you a qualified educator in the business or this guy Nhoj might have understood if all the details were produced correctly!!!

That's pretty weird Mike. I found a local scrap yard that'll take boards and now I'm going to start salvaging them and don't know too much about grading them aside from the obvious motherboards and crap boards from tv's. Logic boards from a harddrive I probably would of tossed in with the low grade lol! This yard is pretty honest though, so they prob would of took it out and said it's worth a shitload compared to low-grade. Thanks for the vid, gives me more info on grading boards!
@macfixer01
@macfixer01 9 жыл бұрын
No offense to SuperDave who said daughter board, but the specific item you were calling a backplane is more generally known as a Riser Board. Risers are used to add more slots to a motherboard, for example in Dell 2U-height rack mount computers which are too short to have normal sized PCI interface boards plugged in vertically. Backplane is a more generic term for any board consisting exclusively of just slot connectors and very few if any chips or capacitors. Sometimes backplanes can be quite large, and often have slot connectors that are just press-fit so the pins aren't even soldered to the board. One other thing... In the motherboard section you called one type of motherboard you showed gold-plated which is incorrect. You are referring only to the color of the solder-mask coating which is most often green, blue, or red. There is also a yellow color solder-mask material which makes the traces look like gold when viewed through it, but the traces are still just plain copper underneath. Rarely certain circuit boards (possibly some HP/Tektronix/Agilent boards, or certain PC sound boards) can be found which have gold plated traces that have been covered over with solder-mask material. You will never see that on ordinary PC motherboards though, since gold plating is costly and unnecessary for their intended purpose. In that highly competitive market it's all about low production costs and high profit.

Nice video explaining the differences between board types. I'll need to sort through my green boards again and take any that appear to be peripheral boards and put them in a separate pile. What do you do with any thin ribbon cables (like those that come out of laptop CD/DVD drives) that have gold plating on the connector end? I got a few laptops in that I'm going through the process of scrapping and pulled a few out and noticed the gold on them.

I wouldn't say it's illegal, but the garbage guys won't take it. It's the same here in Ontario, where they urge you to recycle your electronics. You can still put electronics to the curb but the garbage trucks will just leave it there IF a scrapper hasn't found it yet. Same goes for anything metal that isn't considered normal recyclables (blue box material..tin cans, etc) which the city recycle truck will pick up.
